What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Capture the same portal page before and after an update with the same browser, viewport, zoom, language, and interaction state. Align the images, then use a side-by-side view, a semi-transparent overlay, or a pixel-difference image to find changes. Treat those differences as prompts for review—not as proof that the updated portal is correct or compliant.
Set up a fair before-and-after comparison
A comparison is useful only when the captures are made under matched conditions. A different viewport, browser version, or page state can create visual differences that have nothing to do with the update.

- Choose the same page and state. Use the same URL, scroll position, selected tab, form state, and other relevant interactions in both captures. If the update changes an interaction, record the state being compared.
- Match the environment. Use the same browser and version, viewport dimensions, zoom level, and language. Keep other conditions consistent where practical.
- Capture before and after. Save the original image files rather than relying only on a comparison output. Record each capture’s date, page, browser and version, viewport, zoom, language, and relevant build or release identifier if known.
- Align the captures. Make sure the page edges and viewport match before reviewing differences. Misalignment can make unchanged content look like a regression.
- Compare, investigate, and document. Use side-by-side images, an overlay, or a pixel-difference image to locate changed regions. Check each region against the intended update, record findings with image evidence, and rerun the comparison after fixes.
For automated browser testing, Playwright’s visual-comparison documentation describes comparing screenshots with reference snapshots and updating a snapshot when the page has changed. Update a reference only after reviewing and accepting the change; replacing it automatically can conceal an unintended regression.
Review the changes that matter on a government portal
GIGW applies to government websites and applications at central, state, district, and local levels. Its stated objectives are usability, user-centricity, and universal accessibility. The India Portal Team describes this as the “UUU trilogy of usability, user-centricity and universal accessibility” on its guidelines objectives page.

Use the visual comparison to check whether important portal information and routes remain visible and usable:
- Government identity and ownership cues, including the site header and branding.
- Primary navigation, service entry points, important page content, dates, and downloadable materials.
- Forms, buttons, notices, alerts, and any service instructions affected by the update.
- Footer content and links, especially where the page structure or navigation has changed.
- Whether content fits and remains usable at each screen size you intend to support.
The GIGW conformity matrix includes a check that the homepage shows its last updated or reviewed date. Confirm such details in the page itself rather than assuming a screenshot difference tool can judge whether the information is accurate.

Check more than one browser and screen size
A match at one desktop viewport does not establish that the update works elsewhere. GIGW guidance recommends testing across browsers, browser versions, operating systems, connection speeds, screen resolutions, and devices. Choose a test set relevant to the portal’s users and repeat the same before-and-after comparison at each selected size and environment.
Keep each comparison pair clearly labeled. For example, distinguish a mobile-width capture from a desktop capture instead of comparing them in one pair. When a difference appears only in one browser or viewport, record that condition so the issue can be reproduced.

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
GIGW 3.0 is the applicable official guidance for this context. Its scope page says it is based on international standards including ISO 23026 and WCAG 2.1, as well as the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 and the Information Technology Act, 2000.
Do not treat pixel differences as an accessibility or compliance verdict
Image comparison can locate visible changes, but a screenshot cannot establish whether text alternatives are exposed to assistive technology, keyboard interactions work, semantic markup is correct, or a form behaves properly. GIGW’s accessibility guidance includes checks such as text alternatives and minimum contrast ratios. Those require suitable manual or automated checks beyond image differencing.

Use screenshots as one part of review: investigate visual changes, then test behavior and accessibility with methods appropriate to those questions. An unchanged image is not evidence that underlying accessibility or functionality is unchanged.

Troubleshoot misleading or unusable comparisons
- Most of the page appears shifted: Check viewport dimensions, zoom, scroll position, and image alignment. Re-capture with matched settings before treating the shift as an update regression.
- Text or layout differs between runs without an apparent release change: Verify browser and version, language, and interaction state. Record the environment for each capture so the comparison can be reproduced.
- A pixel-difference image is noisy: Inspect the original captures side by side or as an overlay and verify that they are aligned. A difference image locates changed pixels; it does not explain why they changed.
- The screenshot looks correct but a service does not work: Test the actual controls, forms, and navigation in the browser. A static capture does not establish behavior.
- The visual result seems accessible but accessibility is uncertain: Check relevant accessibility requirements separately, including text alternatives and contrast. Pixel comparison alone cannot verify them.
