Start with address-level availability, not a company’s licence. As of the Ministry of Communications’ 29 January 2026 update, India had issued GMPCS authorizations to OneWeb India Communications Private Limited, Jio Satellite Communications Limited and Starlink Satellite Communication Private Limited. Amazon Kuiper Services India Private Limited’s application was still under examination. That regulatory milestone does not prove that any of these companies is accepting household orders, quoting a price, installing equipment or serving every Indian location.
To compare satellite internet responsibly, verify a live offer at your exact address first. Then compare the complete installed cost, recurring charges and taxes; measured performance and congestion; data-management rules; sky-view, power and weather requirements; and the contract, support and repair terms. The official material available for India does not establish a current, directly comparable consumer price, speed, latency, plan, equipment package or address-level coverage for these providers, so old overseas offers and launch announcements are not reliable buying information.

What is the current satellite-internet situation in India?
India’s regulatory framework permits satellite communications, including internet data services, but authorization and retail service are separate stages. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) describes GMPCS (Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite) as covering satellite voice and non-voice messaging, internet data services, and satellite data connectivity for Internet-of-Things and aggregator devices. Its listed service area is national.
“National” describes the authorization’s geographic scope. It does not mean that a household in every district can place an order. A provider still has to make a consumer offer, accept an address, supply a terminal, arrange installation and operate the required network facilities.

Named authorizations and application status
| Company | Status in the Ministry of Communications update dated 29 January 2026 | What that status does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| OneWeb India Communications Private Limited | GMPCS authorization issued | It does not establish a current household plan, price, installation date or address-level eligibility. |
| Jio Satellite Communications Limited | GMPCS authorization issued | It does not establish a current household plan, price, installation date or address-level eligibility. |
| Starlink Satellite Communication Private Limited | GMPCS authorization issued | It does not establish that consumer orders are open at your address. |
| Amazon Kuiper Services India Private Limited | Application under examination | An application under examination is not an authorization or a retail launch. |
| Nelco and Yotta | Applications rejected | There is no basis in that update for treating either application as an authorized consumer option. |
| Connect4sure | Application withdrawn | A withdrawn application is not a live consumer service. |
These are regulatory statuses, not a ranking. No comparable Indian consumer statistic for price, download speed, upload speed, latency, availability or customer count was established in the official sources considered.
Is Starlink available in India?
Starlink has a GMPCS authorization according to the 29 January 2026 government statement. That confirms a regulatory approval, not that a resident can order a terminal today. The same distinction applies to OneWeb India and Jio Satellite Communications.
To answer “Is Starlink available in my area in India?” use the provider’s current address checker or sales channel and ask for written confirmation of all of the following:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Whether your complete service address is eligible for a household connection.
- Whether the provider is accepting an order now, rather than collecting an expression of interest.
- Which customer category the offer serves: household, enterprise, community, backhaul or another use case.
- The installation lead time and whether a local installer is included.
- The exact terminal, mounting hardware, power supply and cabling supplied.
If a representative cannot provide an order reference, a current tariff or customer terms for your address, treat the service as unconfirmed. Do not infer availability from satellite coverage maps, a licence announcement or service offered in another country.
How to check satellite internet availability at your address
- Record the exact location. Use the complete address and, where requested, the correct PIN code or map location. Satellite terminals need a usable installation point, so a town-level answer is not enough.
- Ask what kind of service is being offered. Confirm whether it is a fixed household connection, an enterprise link, a community installation or backhaul. These products can have different equipment, prices and support obligations.
- Request the current written offer. Obtain the plan name, one-time charges, recurring charge, taxes, data policy, contract term and cancellation rules. Keep the date of the quote.
- Confirm order acceptance. Ask whether payment creates a confirmed order or only a reservation. Get the expected dispatch and installation dates.
- Verify physical feasibility. Ask where the outdoor terminal may be mounted, how much unobstructed sky it needs, how the cable enters the building and what power protection is required.
- Check alternatives at the same address. Obtain current offers for fiber, fixed wireless and mobile broadband before committing. Satellite is most relevant where terrestrial fiber or microwave links are difficult to extend, but that advantage disappears if a reliable local connection already exists.
How much does satellite internet cost in India?
There is no confirmed, directly comparable Indian household price in the official material used for this guide. Do not convert an overseas price, a media estimate or a launch promotion into an Indian total.
Build the cost comparison from the provider’s dated quote and tariff filing. A meaningful first-year total should include:
- Outdoor terminal or dish.
- Indoor router, power supply and any required accessories.
- Shipping or logistics.
- Professional installation, mounting and cable work.
- Deposit, activation or other one-time charges.
- Monthly recurring fee.
- Goods and services tax and any other applicable taxes.
- Data overage or additional-capacity charges.
- Early-cancellation, equipment-return or damage fees.
Separate one-time and recurring amounts. For example, a low monthly fee can still be expensive if the terminal and installation are charged upfront; conversely, a subsidized terminal may be tied to a minimum commitment or a return penalty. Ask whether the quoted amount is promotional, how long it lasts and what the recurring price becomes afterward.
Use the TRAI tariff portal as a cross-check
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s “Know your Tariffs” portal, marked updated 13 October 2026, allows filtering by state or licence service area, provider and connection type. Search the relevant filing, save the tariff’s effective date and compare it with the provider’s customer agreement. A tariff listing is a useful check, but final address eligibility, installation and equipment terms still need confirmation from the provider.
What performance should you compare?
Satellite broadband performance is not one number. Compare the same measurements, for the same location and date, under the same service conditions.

- Gen 3 Satellite Dish: Third-generation antenna delivers a stronger, more stable signal and faster performance.
- Wi-Fi 6 Router: Modern router technology supports faster speeds, increased device capacity, and better efficiency.
- Extra 150FT Cable Included: Extended reach for more flexible installation in large spaces or hard-to-access locations.
- High-Speed, Low-Latency Internet: Stream HD content, video conference, or work remotely with confidence.
- Ideal for Rural and Remote Areas: Perfect for homes, cabins, RVs, boats, and off-grid setups where wired internet isn’t available.
Download and upload speed
Record the published or measured download and upload figures separately. Ask whether they are a maximum, a typical range, a committed rate or a speed-test result. A headline download figure without a measurement period or geography cannot be compared fairly with a local fiber plan.
Latency
Latency affects video calls, remote desktops, online games, VPN responsiveness and interactive cloud applications. Ask for round-trip latency, the test destination and the test method. A provider quoting latency to a nearby gateway is not necessarily describing latency to the websites or applications you use.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Request measurements during the evening peak in your service area, not only an off-peak test. Ask whether traffic is deprioritized after a threshold or during congestion. A nominal plan speed can feel very different when many users share the same satellite capacity or gateway.
Service priority and commitments
Enterprise, community and household products may receive different priorities or service-level commitments. Verify whether the plan includes a minimum availability commitment, restoration target or service credits. If the terms do not promise a number, do not treat a marketing maximum as a guarantee.
No directly comparable Indian speed, latency or congestion figures were established in the official sources available for this comparison. Wait for dated, local measurements before declaring one provider faster.
What data limits and network-management rules matter?
Two plans with the same advertised speed can behave differently because of data policy. Ask for the complete fair-use and traffic-management wording, including:
- Monthly data allowance and the definition of a billing month.
- What happens after the allowance: throttling, blocking, overage billing or deprioritization.
- Whether video, large downloads, backups, peer-to-peer traffic or business applications are treated differently.
- Whether a busy cell or gateway can reduce priority even before an allowance is reached.
- Public IPv4 or IPv6 availability, inbound connections and VPN compatibility if you host services or work through a corporate VPN.
- Any restrictions on resale, shared access, public Wi-Fi or multi-dwelling use.
- Whether the provider publishes a service-level commitment and an outage-credit process.
Ask the provider to identify the exact clause in the customer agreement. A salesperson’s description is not a substitute for the traffic policy that governs the connection.
What installation, weather and power conditions apply?
A satellite connection needs an outdoor terminal with a clear path to the relevant part of the sky. Trees, nearby buildings, parapets and seasonal foliage can interrupt service. Before paying, request the provider’s installation diagram and obstruction requirements for your terminal model.
Site and cabling checks
- Identify a structurally sound roof, wall or pole location.
- Check that the proposed view is not blocked by buildings, trees or future construction.
- Measure the cable route and ask about maximum cable length, connectors and weather sealing.
- Confirm who supplies brackets, grounding, lightning protection and any roof repairs.
- Ask whether landlord, housing-society or local permissions are needed.
Weather resilience
Heavy rain, wet snow, dust and high winds can weaken or interrupt a satellite link, and a dish can lose alignment if its mount moves. Request the equipment’s operating limits, the provider’s outage guidance and the repair process for storm damage. Do not assume that a terminal advertised for another climate has identical Indian installation requirements.

Power and backup
Satellite equipment normally needs continuous power for both the outdoor unit and indoor networking equipment. Ask for the terminal’s power draw, startup requirements and recommended surge protection. If your area has outages, price a UPS, inverter or other backup and confirm whether the terminal recovers automatically after power returns. The provider’s equipment documentation should supply these figures; they were not established in the official regulatory sources used here.

Read the customer agreement before comparing monthly prices. Verify:
- Minimum commitment or lock-in period.
- Notice required to cancel.
- Refund rules for an unserviceable address or delayed installation.
- Ownership of the terminal and responsibility for return shipping.
- Replacement charges for failed, lost or storm-damaged equipment.
- Support channels, operating hours and escalation path.
- Target response and restoration times.
- What happens if the provider changes the plan or withdraws service.
Ask who performs a site visit and whether a second visit is chargeable. In a remote location, travel and replacement logistics can dominate the real cost even when the monthly fee looks competitive.
What does India’s GMPCS authorization require?
DoT’s GMPCS service description covers both geostationary (GSO) and non-geostationary (NGSO) satellite systems and includes internet data services. It also sets network and security conditions that explain why authorization alone is not a retail launch.
Indian gateway for each authorized satellite system
A GMPCS licensee must provide a separate Indian earth-station gateway for each authorized satellite system it uses. That requirement concerns network architecture and domestic operations; it does not tell a consumer where a terminal can be installed or what a plan costs.
The Tool Desk

The authorization framework includes lawful-interception and security obligations and requires Indian traffic to be routed through gateways in India. These are regulatory duties, not a promise of a particular latency, privacy feature or consumer support level.
Separate spectrum assignment
The GMPCS license does not itself confer spectrum rights. A separate Wireless Planning and Coordination (WPC) spectrum assignment is required. Therefore, when reading an announcement, distinguish the GMPCS authorization from spectrum assignment, gateway readiness and commercial order acceptance.

TRAI released a consultation on satellite-communications network authorization and spectrum assignment on 8 April 2026 and closed it on 13 May 2026. The stakeholder list included OneWeb India, Starlink, Jio, Hughes, Bharti Airtel and other telecom participants.
A consultation records a regulatory process and stakeholder views. It is not evidence that a particular provider has launched a household service, published a tariff or opened orders in a specific city. Use it as context for potential rule changes, then rely on a current tariff and customer agreement when making a purchase decision.

Satellite versus fiber, fixed wireless and 5G home broadband
Compare technologies at the same address rather than assuming satellite is automatically faster or cheaper.
Choose terrestrial fiber first when it is reliable and available
Fiber usually deserves the first comparison in dense areas because you can obtain a local price, installation date and performance expectation from the operator. Check actual upload speed, repair history, outage frequency, data limits and contract terms. Satellite becomes more compelling when a fiber build is unavailable, delayed or too expensive to extend.
Consider fixed wireless or 5G where coverage is strong
Fixed wireless and 5G home broadband can avoid trenching and may be simpler to install. Their performance depends on local tower capacity, indoor signal and line of sight, so test the exact address and busy-hour behavior. Compare the total equipment and recurring cost with the satellite quote.
Use satellite for difficult-to-reach locations only after checking resilience
Remote farms, islands, mountain communities and other underserved areas may benefit from satellite when terrestrial fiber or microwave links are impractical. However, include clear-sky requirements, power backup, rain interruptions, installer availability and equipment-replacement logistics in the decision.

A practical comparison worksheet
Fill one row for each provider that confirms a live offer. Date every entry so a later plan change does not look like a historical price or performance claim.
| Field | Questions to record |
|---|---|
| Availability | Is this exact address eligible? Are orders open? What customer category and installation lead time apply? |
| Upfront cost | What are the terminal, router, shipping, installation, mounting, activation and deposit charges, including taxes? |
| Recurring cost | What is the monthly charge, when does a promotion end and what price follows? |
| Performance | What download, upload and latency figures are published or measured, where and on what date? |
| Congestion | What happens at busy times? Is traffic deprioritized or throttled? |
| Data policy | What allowance, fair-use rule, overage price and post-threshold behavior apply? |
| Installation | What sky view, mount, cable route, grounding and permissions are required? |
| Power and weather | What power draw and backup are needed, and what weather limitations are documented? |
| Support | Which channels and hours are available, and what response and restoration targets are promised? |
| Contract | What minimum term, cancellation notice, refund, equipment-return and damage rules apply? |
Common comparison mistakes
Treating authorization as availability
A licence confirms regulatory permission within a defined framework. It does not confirm that a consumer order is open. Require an address check and written commercial terms.
Using foreign prices or speeds
Equipment, taxes, spectrum arrangements, gateways, plans and exchange rates differ by country. Use India-specific tariff filings and provider terms dated for your purchase.
Comparing maximum speed with a local measurement
Label each figure as maximum, typical, committed or measured. Include the test location, date and time of day.
Ignoring the terminal and power bill
Calculate the first-year total, including installation and backup power, not just the advertised monthly charge.
Overlooking the return and repair path
In a remote location, a failed terminal can leave you offline while replacement equipment travels. Confirm ownership, shipping responsibility and restoration targets before ordering.
Decision rule: when is satellite internet the right choice?
- Reject unverified offers. If the provider cannot confirm your address, order acceptance and customer terms, stop the comparison.
- Calculate the complete cost. Add equipment, installation, taxes, recurring fees, backup power and possible cancellation or overage charges.
- Match the service to your workload. Video calls, cloud backups, VPNs, gaming and business hosting need different latency, upload, data and public-address characteristics.
- Stress-test the physical site. Confirm sky view, weather exposure, mounting, cabling and power resilience.
- Compare a real terrestrial alternative. Obtain a current fiber, fixed-wireless or 5G offer for the same address.
- Choose only on verified, dated evidence. If no provider supplies comparable Indian figures, the honest conclusion is that the market is not yet ready for a meaningful provider ranking.
As of the 13 October 2026 tariff-portal update and the regulatory dates above, the defensible way to compare satellite internet in India is therefore offer-by-offer and address-by-address. OneWeb India, Jio Satellite Communications and Starlink have the named GMPCS authorizations reported on 29 January 2026, while Amazon Kuiper’s application was still under examination in that statement. None of those facts, by themselves, tells you which service you can buy, what it will cost or how it will perform at your home.
