First align the customer promises in each contract, the point at which each promise is satisfied, and how the transaction price is allocated among those promises. Subscription access is commonly recognized over the service period—often ratably once access begins—but implementation, licenses, usage fees, support, and professional services can follow different patterns.
For an apples-to-apples comparison, read each company’s revenue-recognition policy, revenue mix, contract-liability roll-forward, remaining performance obligations (RPO), billing terms, and judgments. Keep recognized revenue, billings, cash collections, deferred revenue, and RPO separate: they answer different questions about current performance, invoicing, liquidity, and contracted demand.

Why two SaaS companies can report revenue differently
“SaaS” describes a delivery model, not one standardized contract. One provider may sell only continuous platform access. Another may bundle access with implementation, data migration, premium support, usage-based transactions, a software license, or third-party services. The accounting follows the promises made to the customer and when those promises are fulfilled.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That is why two companies with similar-looking products can show different revenue timing even when their customers sign annual contracts. A company that starts recognizing access when its platform is available may report revenue ratably across the term. A company with a distinct implementation service may recognize that portion as the implementation progresses or when it is completed. A usage fee may be recognized as usage occurs, while a license may be recognized at a point in time or over a period depending on the rights conveyed.

The practical implication is simple: compare contract economics and accounting policies before comparing growth rates. A faster increase in reported revenue may reflect earlier recognition, a different mix of services, acquisitions, foreign-exchange movements, pricing, or usage—not necessarily stronger underlying demand.
Begin with the governing accounting framework
US GAAP and ASC 606
FASB’s Topic 606 establishes principles for reporting the nature, timing, and uncertainty of revenue from customer contracts. Its stated objective is to improve comparability across entities, industries, jurisdictions, and capital markets while requiring disclosures that help users understand revenue and cash flows. The objective does not make every contract identical: companies still apply the standard to their own promises, estimates, and judgments.
The standard’s sequence is:
- Identify the contract with the customer.
- Identify each performance obligation—the distinct good or service promised.
- Determine the transaction price, including relevant variable consideration.
- Allocate that price to the performance obligations, generally using relative standalone selling prices.
- Recognize revenue when, or as, each obligation is satisfied.
Use the company’s policy note to see how it applies these steps rather than inferring treatment from a product name or management’s use of “SaaS revenue.”
IFRS 15
IFRS 15 uses the same broad contract-based principle: recognize revenue when a promised good or service is transferred to the customer. The IFRS Foundation states that the standard addresses the nature, amount, timing, and uncertainty of revenue and cash flows and applies to annual reporting periods beginning on or after January 1, 2018.
When comparing a US issuer with an international issuer, record whether the company reports under US GAAP/ASC 606 or IFRS 15, then read its specific policy wording and judgments. The frameworks are closely aligned, but detailed applications, elections, disclosures, and contract populations may differ.
Map what each company actually promises
Stand-ready subscription access
Continuous access to a hosted platform is usually a service delivered over time. Two FY2025 SEC-filed annual reports describe subscription access as recognized ratably over the contract period beginning when the service or platform is made available, because customers simultaneously receive and consume the benefits.
“Ratable” does not mean every subscription begins on the invoice date. Confirm the stated commencement trigger: platform availability, activation, delivery of a specified environment, or another event. A contract signed in March may not begin generating subscription revenue until implementation is complete or access is enabled.

Implementation, onboarding, and upfront fees
Implementation is not automatically a separate performance obligation. If the work does not transfer a distinct promised good or service to the customer, a nonrefundable upfront fee generally represents an advance payment for future services and is recognized as those services are provided. If implementation is distinct in the specific contract, the company allocates part of the transaction price to it and recognizes that portion according to the transfer pattern.
Read for the company’s conclusions about data migration, configuration, training, and setup. A policy that combines these activities with hosted access can defer recognition of the related fee across the access period; a distinct-service conclusion can produce earlier recognition.
Usage and transaction charges
Usage-based fees may be recognized as the customer consumes units, processes transactions, or generates activity. Their timing can therefore vary with customer behavior rather than the passage of the contractual term. Check whether the company records a minimum commitment, estimates variable consideration, or waits until usage is known.
Licenses and other promises
Perpetual or term licenses, premium support, professional services, hardware, and third-party offerings can each have different recognition patterns. A license may be recognized at a point in time or over time depending on the nature of the customer’s rights and the company’s continuing obligations. Professional services may use a measure of progress. Support may be recognized over the support period.
For third-party services, determine whether the company acts as principal or agent. Gross presentation records the amount charged to the customer as revenue; net presentation records only the company’s retained amount. This choice can materially affect reported revenue without changing the underlying customer spend.
Use a repeatable comparison workflow
1. Fix the comparison period and reporting basis
Choose the same fiscal year or quarter for every company. Record each fiscal year-end, reporting currency, accounting framework, and whether the period includes a major acquisition. A calendar-year company and a September year-end company may be reporting different economic periods even when both filings are labeled “fiscal 2025.”
2. Separate reported revenue from management metrics
List the GAAP or IFRS revenue line items first. Then identify any management-defined measures such as “subscription revenue,” “recurring revenue,” annual recurring revenue, or SaaS revenue. Determine whether each is a reported accounting line, a subtotal, or a non-GAAP operating metric. Do not substitute a management metric for consolidated revenue without reconciling its definition.

3. Build a revenue-mix profile
For each company, record the amounts and trends for:
- Hosted subscription access.
- Usage or transaction fees.
- Perpetual or term licenses.
- Support and maintenance.
- Implementation, onboarding, and professional services.
- Hardware and other products.
- Third-party services.
Mix matters because a company with a larger professional-services component can recognize a different share of contract value in the current period than a company selling only stand-ready access.
4. Identify the recognition trigger and pattern
Write down when recognition begins and how it proceeds for each material promise: on availability, on delivery, as usage occurs, at a point in time, ratably, or using another measure of progress. Note how renewals, contract modifications, cancellations, and customer acceptance affect the conclusion when the filing discusses them.
5. Document billing and payment terms separately
Record typical contract terms, annual versus monthly billing, payment in advance or arrears, renewal and cancellation provisions, and material financing considerations where disclosed. Billing cadence changes working capital and contract balances; it does not by itself determine the revenue-recognition pattern.
6. Read contract-liability disclosures
Capture the period-end balance, current and noncurrent portions, additions from billings or cash receipts, and revenue recognized from opening balances. Confirm the issuer’s terminology: deferred revenue and contract liability are often related labels, but classification and definitions must be read in context.

7. Read RPO and expected timing
Record the transaction price allocated to unsatisfied performance obligations and the expected timing of recognition. Check which contracts are excluded and whether the company uses practical expedients for short-duration contracts or other disclosures. A smaller disclosed RPO can reflect exclusions rather than weaker contracted demand.
8. Record judgments and limitations
Note standalone selling-price estimates, allocation methods, variable-consideration constraints, conclusions about distinct implementation, principal-versus-agent treatment, and any disclosed policy changes. Label analyst calculations separately from figures reported by the issuer.

Comparison worksheet
| Comparison item | What to record from each filing | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Reporting basis and period | US GAAP/ASC 606 or IFRS 15; fiscal year-end; currency; acquisition periods | Prevents mismatched periods and framework assumptions |
| Revenue mix | Subscription, usage, licenses, support, implementation, services, hardware, third-party offerings | Different promises can create different timing and gross/net outcomes |
| Recognition commencement | Availability, activation, delivery, acceptance, usage, or another trigger | Shows when contracted value enters reported revenue |
| Recognition pattern | Ratable, usage-based, point-in-time, or progress-based | Explains quarter-to-quarter timing |
| Billing cadence | Annual or monthly; advance or arrears; renewal and cancellation terms | Explains cash and working-capital effects without confusing them with revenue |
| Contract liability | Period-end amount, current/noncurrent classification, and roll-forward | Shows invoiced or collected amounts not yet recognized, subject to issuer definitions |
| RPO | Unsatisfied transaction price, expected recognition timing, exclusions and expedients | Provides a view of disclosed contracted obligations beyond recognized revenue |
| Judgments | Standalone selling prices, variable consideration, distinct promises, principal/agent | Identifies where management estimates affect comparability |
| Known limitations | Acquisitions, foreign exchange, policy changes, usage mix, disclosure gaps | Keeps growth conclusions from overstating precision |
Do not confuse the five key measures
| Measure | What it represents | What it cannot tell you by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Recognized revenue | Revenue recorded as performance obligations are satisfied under the company’s policy | How much was invoiced, collected, or still contracted |
| Billings | Amounts invoiced to customers | How much service has already been delivered |
| Cash collections | Receipts affected by payment timing, credit terms, and collections | The period in which accounting revenue should be recognized |
| Deferred revenue or contract liability | Amounts generally billed or received before the related performance is recognized | Total future demand; definitions and classifications vary by issuer |
| Remaining performance obligations | Transaction price allocated to unsatisfied performance obligations | Deferred revenue or invoiced amounts; RPO can include amounts not yet billed |
For example, an annual customer invoice paid upfront can increase cash, billings, and the contract liability immediately while recognized revenue is released over the service term. Conversely, usage billed in arrears may generate recognized revenue before cash is collected. RPO can include future contractual consideration that has not yet been invoiced, so it is not a substitute for deferred revenue.
Interpret growth only after adjusting the context
Acquisitions
An acquisition can add reported revenue for only part of a comparative period and can change the mix of licenses, services, and subscriptions. Separate organic and acquired contributions when management discloses them, and state the limitation when it does not.

Foreign exchange
Currency translation can make reported growth differ from constant-currency growth. Compare the same currency basis and identify whether management’s constant-currency measure uses a disclosed methodology.
Contract timing and commencement
A large customer starting service near a quarter-end can shift recognized revenue into a later period if access was not yet available. Conversely, completing implementation earlier can bring the access commencement date forward. Look for commentary on go-live timing, acceptance, and contract modifications.
Price, usage, and mix
Revenue can rise because of price increases, higher consumption, more customers, a shift toward professional services, or a change in the mix of gross and net arrangements. Analyze these drivers separately where disclosed rather than treating all growth as recurring subscription expansion.
Policy changes
A change in accounting policy, contract design, or disclosure can create a break in the historical series. Identify the effective date and whether prior periods were recast before calculating growth rates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to read contract liabilities and RPO together
Contract liabilities show the portion of consideration for which the company has not yet recognized the related revenue, subject to the issuer’s classification and terminology. A rising balance can indicate stronger advance billing, longer terms, more renewals, or faster bookings; it can also reflect billing mechanics rather than increased demand.
Best Value
RPO is broader in a different direction: it is the transaction price allocated to unsatisfied obligations and may include amounts not yet invoiced. Review expected recognition windows and exclusions, including practical expedients for short-duration contracts. Compare RPO only when definitions and periods are aligned.
Neither measure is a universal leading indicator. A company with monthly billing may have lower deferred revenue than an otherwise similar company that bills annually, while both may have comparable customer commitments. Use the contract-liability roll-forward, RPO note, billing terms, and recognized revenue together.
Focus on the judgments that drive comparability
Distinct versus combined promises
The central question for implementation, training, and configuration is whether the customer can benefit from the service on its own and whether it is separately identifiable in the contract. A conclusion that the work is not distinct generally links its consideration to the broader service obligation; a distinct conclusion can create a separate recognition pattern.
Allocation and standalone selling prices
When a contract bundles access, support, and services, the company allocates consideration using relative standalone selling prices. Those prices may be directly observable or estimated. Record the estimation approach and any material changes because allocation can shift revenue among periods and categories.
Variable consideration
Usage fees, service-level credits, rebates, refunds, and bonuses may require estimates and constraints. Compare whether companies recognize variable amounts as activity occurs or defer recognition until the uncertainty is resolved.
Principal versus agent
For a third-party offering, determine whether the company controls the specified good or service before transfer. Gross-versus-net presentation changes reported revenue and margin percentages, so compare the conclusion rather than assuming similar customer spend produces similar revenue.
Cross-check filings and disclosures
Use the latest annual and quarterly filings for a defined peer set. Read the revenue policy note, disaggregated-revenue table, contract-balance note, RPO disclosure, significant-judgment section, and management discussion together. The FASB’s GAAP Taxonomy Implementation Guide on revenue can help locate relevant tags and timing structures, but it is nonauthoritative; the accounting standard and codification remain the authority.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. That figure describes the review process, not the number of SaaS companies using one policy and not the prevalence of any recognition method.
Cloud arrangements also illustrate why contract details matter. In a 2018 FASB announcement about implementation-cost accounting, Chairman Russell G. Golden said, “To address this diversity in practice, this standard aligns the accounting for implementation costs of hosting arrangements—regardless of whether they convey a license to the hosted software.” The statement concerns implementation costs rather than revenue recognition, but it underscores that cloud arrangements can differ materially in structure.
Common comparison mistakes and corrections
- Assuming every subscription is recognized identically: check commencement, distinct services, usage terms, and licenses.
- Treating billings as revenue: reconcile invoices and cash to the contract-liability movement and recognized revenue.
- Calling RPO deferred revenue: inspect whether the RPO amount has been invoiced and review exclusions.
- Comparing annual growth across mismatched fiscal periods: align year-ends or disclose the mismatch.
- Ignoring acquisitions and foreign exchange: separate reported, organic, and constant-currency views where possible.
- Comparing “SaaS revenue” labels without definitions: determine whether the metric is GAAP/IFRS revenue or management’s own subtotal.
- Overlooking gross-versus-net presentation: inspect principal-agent conclusions for third-party services.
- Using taxonomy tags as accounting authority: use the taxonomy guide to find disclosures, then rely on the standard and company policy.
- Assuming a contract balance proves demand strength: interpret billing cadence, renewals, collections, and RPO together.
A practical analyst checklist
- Define the peer group, fiscal period, currency, and accounting framework.
- Extract reported revenue lines and reconcile management-defined subscription metrics.
- Map each company’s promises: access, usage, licenses, support, implementation, professional services, hardware, and third-party offerings.
- For every material promise, record the recognition trigger and pattern.
- Document contract terms, billing cadence, advance or arrears payment, and renewal provisions.
- Capture contract liabilities, current and noncurrent portions, and the roll-forward from opening to closing balance.
- Capture RPO, expected recognition timing, exclusions, and practical expedients.
- Record allocation, variable-consideration, distinct-service, and principal-agent judgments.
- Adjust interpretation for acquisitions, foreign exchange, pricing, usage, mix, and policy changes.
- Label sourced figures, company-defined metrics, and your own calculations separately.
- State the remaining disclosure limitations before drawing a growth or demand conclusion.
Bottom line for an apples-to-apples comparison
Start with the contracts, not the headline growth rate. Subscription access is commonly recognized over time, often ratably after service availability, but bundled or usage-based promises can change both timing and presentation. Align the accounting framework, fiscal period, revenue mix, recognition trigger, billing cadence, contract liabilities, RPO, and management judgments before comparing companies. Then treat revenue, billings, cash, deferred revenue, and RPO as complementary measures rather than interchangeable ones. The result will not eliminate every difference, but it will show which differences reflect customer economics and which reflect accounting timing, contract design, or disclosure choices.
