To compare Uber, Lyft, or other ride-hailing work fairly, track the same kinds of shifts over several weeks and calculate earnings after platform deductions and work-related vehicle costs. Then compare three separate measures: net earnings per engaged hour, net earnings per total hour committed to driving, and net earnings per work mile. Include tips and incentives transparently, and keep the time, mileage, and expense methods consistent across platforms.
What to count as earnings—and what not to combine
A driver’s payout is not the same as a rider’s fare, and neither figure by itself tells you what you earned after expenses. Uber says its service fee is deducted from gross driver earnings, while the difference between what a rider pays and what a driver receives can also reflect booking fees, commercial insurance, and operational expenses. Uber’s Earnings Hub lets drivers review the amount Uber kept from Rider Fares; its explanation distinguishes that amount from third-party expenses and rider promotions (Uber’s weekly amount-kept explanation).

Use your weekly statements and earnings screens to separate the components rather than treating the rider-to-driver gap as one commission. Lyft’s pay information also varies by market: its rate cards apply in regions where Upfront Pay is unavailable, and its driver guidance describes ride types, tips, and bonuses such as Ride Streaks (Lyft’s driver pay explanation).
Recommended Free Tools
- Ride pay or payout: record the amount attributed to rides.
- Tips: record separately so you can see how much of the result came from tips.
- Incentives and guarantees: list each one separately, including its conditions and period. Lyft describes ride bonuses such as Ride Streaks; eligibility and availability can vary.
- Platform deductions: use the fees or deductions actually itemized in your statement.
- Other charges: keep separately identified insurance, taxes, or external fees distinct from platform deductions.
Do not assume that an incentive will recur. A one-time bonus can make a week look unusually strong, so compare the base result as well as the total including incentives.

Use a consistent worksheet for each shift or week
Record comparable work periods for each platform, ideally across several weeks. Match city or market, day of week, time block, and general driving conditions as closely as practical. Keep the calculation method fixed; comparing one platform’s engaged-hour rate with another’s all-online-hour rate produces a misleading result.
| Record | What to include |
|---|---|
| Period and market | Platform, city or market, date range, and day and time blocks. |
| Pay components | Ride earnings or payout, tips, each incentive or guarantee, and adjustments. |
| Deductions | Platform service fees and separately identified external fees, insurance, or taxes shown in statements. |
| Time | Engaged hours and total app-on or otherwise available hours. If practical, note waiting and repositioning time separately. |
| Miles and costs | Total miles attributable to the work, the mileage boundary used, fuel cost or a consistently applied estimate, and the method for allocating maintenance, repairs, tires, insurance, and vehicle use. |
For mileage, state whether your total includes pickup miles, repositioning, and other app-on driving. Use a mileage log or another consistent record; the platform earnings figure alone does not establish all the miles you drove for work.

For this comparison, count the vehicle and business costs that apply to you. Fuel is only one of them; relevant expenses can include maintenance, repairs, tires, allocated insurance, and vehicle use or depreciation. Apply the same cost method to each platform and period. The resulting figure is an operating comparison, not necessarily taxable income.
Net per engaged hour
Divide net operating earnings by the hours spent on engaged trips. This shows the return during trip work, but it excludes some unpaid waiting or repositioning. Lyft’s 2024 analysis reported median net earnings of $23.46 per engaged hour. That is Lyft’s analysis, not a guaranteed rate or personal quote; its method focuses on marginal costs and engaged time, so it should not be treated as directly comparable with a figure that includes all available hours or uses another cost model (Lyft’s 2024 earnings analysis).
Net per total work hour
Divide net operating earnings by all hours you committed to the work, including time available for requests, waiting, and repositioning. This is the more useful measure for answering, “How much did I make per hour I spent driving?” Define the boundary consistently—for example, when you began being available for work and when you stopped.
Net per work mile
Divide net operating earnings by the work miles in your log. This helps expose differences in fuel efficiency and trip mix, but it is only comparable if you count the same kinds of miles for every platform. Include the mileage boundary alongside the result.

Keep the denominators visible when you share or compare results: an hourly figure without its hours definition, or a per-mile figure without its mileage boundary, can conceal important differences.

Published cost figures use different populations and methods, so they are context rather than a substitute for your records. A 2024 UC Berkeley Labor Center report gives an average driver expense estimate of 63.1 cents per mile over all hours worked, attributing it to a companion expense report based on driver survey data. It is a study estimate, not a current quote for an individual driver or a universal cost per mile (UC Berkeley Labor Center’s 2024 report).
Do not add the IRS standard mileage deduction to the same actual vehicle expenses in an economic comparison as if they were separate costs. They are different approaches used for tax calculations, not two independent costs to subtract from earnings. Uber’s U.S. tax guidance describes annual tax summaries, business miles, gross earnings reporting, and two vehicle deduction methods; it lists the 2025 IRS standard mileage rate as 72.5 cents per mile. That is a tax deduction reference for the 2025 tax year, not a personalized estimate of your operating cost (Uber’s U.S. tax information).

Check incentives and fee commitments against your actual terms
Bonuses and guarantees can materially change a platform’s result for a particular shift or week. Record the amount, eligibility conditions, and period, then compare both earnings including the incentive and the result without treating it as recurring income.
Platform announcements about fee shares or caps are not equivalent to take-home earnings after vehicle costs. Lyft’s February 2024 announcement described a commitment for drivers to receive at least 70% of rider payments after external fees each week, subject to Lyft’s stated terms. Its nationwide expansion announcement also reported an estimated net figure based on Lyft’s own cost assumptions. A separate Lyft announcement published in 2026 describes a monthly fee cap starting May 1 and says Lyft’s fee averages approximately 14% of what passengers pay for rides. These are Lyft’s own statements; check the current terms, applicable market, and effective date before using them as a description of your situation (Lyft’s driver earnings announcements).
Even where a commitment applies, its scope and calculation differ from a personal comparison after fuel, vehicle use, and unpaid time. For the latter, use your statements, cost records, and the three rates above.

There is no universal winner established by the available figures. A platform’s result can change with market, schedule, vehicle, fuel economy, waiting time, trip mix, and incentive eligibility. Compare your own results across similar periods and keep each measure separate:
- Net earnings per engaged hour, with the engaged-time definition.
- Net earnings per total work hour, including waiting and repositioning time you count.
- Net earnings per work mile, with the mileage boundary.
- Tips and incentives, shown separately from ordinary ride pay.
- Platform deductions separated from external charges.
- Vehicle-cost method and consistency across platforms.
Repeat the comparison over several similar weeks. Unusual surge demand, weather, events, and one-off bonuses can skew a single period; a consistent record makes it easier to see whether a result persists under the schedule you actually work.
