To compare refrigerators, start with each model’s EnergyGuide annual electricity use in kilowatt-hours (kWh/year), then compare models with similar capacity and configuration. Estimate the electricity cost with one calculation: annual kWh × your electricity rate in dollars per kWh. Divide that annual result by 12 for an average monthly figure.

That result is a standardized estimate, not a promise about your bill. Door openings, room temperature, how full the cabinet is, maintenance and other operating conditions can move real consumption up or down. Keep the refrigerator’s purchase price, capacity and features separate from its energy cost so an efficient model is not mistaken for the lowest-total-cost choice automatically.

What the EnergyGuide number tells you

The yellow EnergyGuide label is designed to answer three practical questions: how much electricity a model is expected to use in a year, how that use compares with similar products, and what its operation may cost under the label’s stated assumptions. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Consumer Guide to Kitchen Appliances describes the purpose this way: “Use this label to determine the model’s energy use, compare the energy use of similar ENERGY STAR-qualified models, and estimate annual operating costs.”

The key figure for a running-cost comparison is the annual electricity-use estimate, shown as kWh per year. A kilowatt-hour is a unit of energy: using 1,000 watts for one hour consumes 1 kWh. A refrigerator cycles on and off, so its wattage printed on a nameplate is not the same thing as its yearly consumption. Use the annual kWh figure for model comparisons and cost calculations.

Record more than the kWh figure

Write down these fields for every model you are considering:

  • Annual energy use in kWh/year.
  • Usable capacity, usually listed in cubic feet.
  • Configuration, such as top-freezer, bottom-freezer, side-by-side or another layout.
  • Whether the figure is from the model’s current EnergyGuide label or an official ENERGY STAR product listing.
  • The date you checked the information, because certified-model listings and product specifications can change.

Capacity and configuration matter because a larger cabinet or a different door-and-freezer arrangement can require more energy even when its design is efficient. A raw kWh ranking across unlike products can therefore reward a small refrigerator simply because it has less interior volume.

How to make an apples-to-apples comparison

Compare refrigerators in the same practical class before looking for the smallest number. DOE purchasing guidance is intended for similar products, and ENERGY STAR product listings show capacity alongside annual kWh so you can make that match.

Match capacity first

Group models whose capacities are close enough for your household needs. If one model is 18 cubic feet and another is 28 cubic feet, the larger model may use more electricity while still delivering better energy performance per cubic foot. The label does not provide a universal “best” size; decide how much storage you actually need, then compare energy use within that size range.

Match configuration and defrost design

Compare top-freezer models with other top-freezer models, side-by-side units with side-by-side units, and so on. Check whether the units use automatic defrost or another defrost arrangement, because the tested design affects the annual figure. Keep the configuration in your notes instead of treating two refrigerators as interchangeable because both are described simply as “refrigerators.”

Use current model information

Read the label attached to the exact model number or use the manufacturer’s current specification together with the official ENERGY STAR listing when available. ENERGY STAR figures are calculated under DOE test procedures. A retailer page, a previous model year or a similarly named variant can have a different capacity and kWh value.

Calculate annual and monthly running cost

Estimated annual cost = annual kWh × electricity price ($/kWh)

For an average monthly estimate:

Estimated average monthly cost = estimated annual cost ÷ 12

Use the rate on your current electricity bill, utility tariff or time-of-use plan. If your bill has multiple tiers, a single rate is only an approximation; use the marginal rate that best represents the extra electricity your household would consume, or calculate each tier separately if your utility makes that practical.

Worked example with an illustrative household rate

Suppose a refrigerator’s label says 420 kWh/year and your electricity price is $0.18/kWh:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Multiply 420 kWh by $0.18/kWh: $75.60 per year.
  2. Divide $75.60 by 12: $6.30 per month on average.

The $0.18 rate in this example is only an illustration. Replace it with your own current price; do not assume that a rate from a federal purchasing example or an old national average applies to your home.

Compare two models using the same rate

Imagine two similarly sized, similarly configured models:

Model Annual use Illustrative rate Estimated annual cost Average monthly cost
A 420 kWh/year $0.18/kWh $75.60 $6.30
B 500 kWh/year $0.18/kWh $90.00 $7.50

At that illustrative rate, Model A saves $14.40 per year in electricity. Whether that difference justifies a higher purchase price depends on the price premium, expected ownership period, capacity, warranty and features. Do not compare one model at $0.18/kWh with another at a different rate; the common rate is what isolates the energy-use difference.

Understanding the DOE example figures

The U.S. Department of Energy’s federal purchasing comparison, accessed in 2026, uses an example ENERGY STAR-compliant 18.1-cubic-foot automatic-defrost top-freezer refrigerator rated at 363.5 kWh/year. The same example assumes an electricity price of $0.099/kWh, described as the average at federal facilities. Multiplying those two figures gives about $35.99 per year, or roughly $3.00 per month when divided by 12.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those numbers illustrate the method; they are not a current national household average, a guarantee for every 18.1-cubic-foot refrigerator or a price you should substitute for your utility’s rate. The assumed federal-facility price is especially important: household tariffs vary by location, provider, plan and time of use.

Historical averages need a date attached

A DOE rulemaking FAQ from 2019 reported historical averages of 384 kWh/year for consumer refrigerators, 588 kWh/year for refrigerator-freezers and 555 kWh/year for freezers. These figures describe that dated FAQ context. They are not current model recommendations, current population averages or a reason to expect every refrigerator in one category to use exactly those amounts.

Why your refrigerator may use more or less than the label

ENERGY STAR cautions that actual consumption varies with operating conditions and behavior. The standardized test number gives you a consistent comparison point, while your kitchen supplies the conditions that determine the meter reading.

Door-opening frequency

Each opening lets cooled air escape and brings warmer air into the cabinet. A household that opens the refrigerator repeatedly throughout the day can use more electricity than a household with fewer openings, even with the same model.

Surrounding temperature

A refrigerator in a hot garage, beside a range or in direct sun has to reject heat under harder conditions than one in a temperate, ventilated kitchen. Seasonal room-temperature changes can also make monthly use fluctuate.

How full the cabinet is

Load affects air movement and the amount of warm food entering the appliance. ENERGY STAR specifically identifies how full the refrigerator is kept as one factor in actual consumption. A label cannot know your shopping pattern, food temperature or arrangement of shelves.

Condition and upkeep

Dirty condenser areas, blocked vents, damaged door seals or an appliance that cannot hold its set temperature can increase runtime. Replacement calculators also caution that savings vary with use and upkeep. Energy use that suddenly rises is a reason to check the appliance’s condition before assuming the label was wrong.

A repeatable comparison process

  1. Define the class you need. Choose a target capacity range and configuration before collecting numbers. Include freezer placement and defrost design in the description.
  2. Find the exact model information. Read each model’s EnergyGuide label and, where applicable, verify the official ENERGY STAR product detail. Record the model number, capacity and annual kWh.
  3. Check that the numbers are comparable. Remove models that are materially different in size or configuration unless you are intentionally deciding between different classes.
  4. Enter your electricity rate. Use the current dollars-per-kWh figure from your utility bill or tariff. If your plan changes by tier or time, note that a single-rate result is an average approximation.
  5. Calculate annual cost. Multiply each annual kWh figure by the same electricity rate.
  6. Calculate an average month. Divide each annual estimate by 12. Label it as an average, not a prediction for every calendar month.
  7. Compare the energy difference. Subtract the lower annual cost from the higher one to see the recurring electricity difference.
  8. Evaluate the whole purchase separately. Consider purchase price, capacity, features, fit, warranty and the years you expect to keep the appliance. Energy cost alone does not establish total value.

Use a worksheet instead of relying on memory

A simple table prevents a low kWh number from being separated from the size and layout that produced it.

How to estimate savings when replacing an older refrigerator

For a replacement decision, first find the old appliance’s measured or documented annual use if possible. Then compare it with the prospective model using the same electricity rate:

Estimated annual savings = (old annual kWh − new annual kWh) × electricity rate

If you do not know the old unit’s kWh, the ENERGY STAR Flip Your Fridge calculator can frame a replacement estimate using your inputs and its stated assumptions. Treat the output as an estimate: the organization notes that actual savings may vary with use and upkeep.

What the calculator cannot decide for you

A calculator does not establish whether replacement is financially sensible in every household. Add the new appliance’s purchase and installation cost, disposal charges, expected service life, capacity difference and any repair costs you would otherwise incur. A bigger replacement may use more electricity than a small old unit while still being the right choice if it meets a different storage requirement; that is a household decision, not an energy-only conclusion.

Common comparison mistakes

Using the federal example rate as your bill rate

The $0.099/kWh value in DOE’s federal purchasing example is an assumption for federal facilities. It is not a current household rate. Enter your own tariff in every calculation.

Comparing unlike sizes

A compact refrigerator will often show fewer annual kWh than a full-size refrigerator because it has less volume. Compare within a capacity range that can serve the same purpose.

Ranking by kWh without noting the configuration

Freezer placement, automatic defrost and other design differences affect the tested number. Keep those descriptors beside the kWh figure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turning annual kWh into a guaranteed monthly bill

The annual label value is an estimate under standardized conditions. Dividing by 12 creates a planning average, not a promise that every month will match it.

Mixing label years or model variants

Two nearly identical product names can refer to different capacities or revisions. Verify the exact model number and current listing before using a number.

Ignoring the electricity rate structure

A household on time-of-use or tiered billing may not pay one constant rate. A single-rate calculation is useful for comparison, but it can differ from the final bill impact.

Assuming the most efficient model is automatically the best buy

Energy use is one recurring cost. Upfront price, storage, fit, features and ownership period remain separate parts of the decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to interpret the result for your household

Use the calculation to answer a narrow question: how much electricity-cost difference does this model create at my rate? Then ask broader questions in order:

  • Does the capacity match the food volume your household actually stores?
  • Is the configuration practical for the available space and daily use?
  • What is the annual cost difference between the finalists at one common rate?
  • How many years will you keep the appliance?
  • Does the energy saving justify any purchase-price premium during that ownership period?
  • Could installation conditions, a hot room or maintenance needs change real use?

This framework avoids two opposite errors: dismissing a meaningful recurring cost because the monthly number looks small, or paying a large upfront premium for an energy saving that will not recover the difference during the period you expect to own the refrigerator.

Quick reference: the essential formulas and checks

Question Use this
What does the label report? Estimated annual electricity use in kWh/year under standardized test conditions.
What will it cost annually? Annual kWh × your electricity price in $/kWh.
What is the average monthly cost? Estimated annual cost ÷ 12.
What is the annual saving versus another model? (Higher annual kWh − lower annual kWh) × the same electricity rate.
What must be matched first? Capacity, configuration and comparable model information.
Why can actual use differ? Door openings, surrounding temperature, fullness, upkeep and other operating conditions.

For a defensible comparison, save the exact model numbers, the annual kWh figures, the capacity and configuration, your electricity-rate source and the date you checked them. That record lets you recalculate when your utility price changes without starting over.
