How to Compare Red Light Therapy Masks: Wavelengths, Fit, and Safety

Compare at-home red light therapy masks by intended use, evidence for that use, stated light output, fit, and safety directions—not by LED count or the number of wavelengths alone. A 2025 sham-controlled trial offers evidence for one mask protocol for crow’s feet; it does not establish that every mask works or identify a universally best wavelength.

Start with the skin concern and the evidence

Before comparing specifications, decide what you want to address: for example, wrinkles or acne. Then look for evidence tied to that concern and, ideally, the exact device. A study on one mask and one outcome cannot establish effectiveness for other devices or conditions.

A 2025 multicenter, randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled study enrolled 60 candidates at two institutions. Participants used a mask emitting 630 nm LED and 850 nm infrared LED (IRED), or a sham device, over 12 weeks. They were Asian adults aged 30–65 with Fitzpatrick skin types II–V and crow’s-feet scores within the study’s specified range. The authors reported temporary improvement and tolerability under that protocol, and concluded that the tested phototherapies were effective, safe, well tolerated, and painless for skin rejuvenation. That is the authors’ conclusion about their trial—not proof for every mask, every user, or every cosmetic concern. Read the study.

The study authors recommended combining its two wavelengths, but that recommendation should not be treated as a universal rule for choosing commercial devices. The evidence here does not establish a single best wavelength or an independent head-to-head ranking of masks.

Compare wavelengths and output in context

For each candidate, record the wavelength or wavelengths and any stated tolerance, irradiance, or dose. Then ask whether evidence supports that band and output for your specific concern and for a comparable device and treatment protocol. A longer list of wavelengths or a higher LED count is not, by itself, evidence of better results.

The trial described above tested 630 nm LED and 850 nm IRED for crow’s feet. Separately, TIME reports a dermatologist’s general guidance of about 640 nm red and 830 nm infrared for skin improvements. That interview is expert guidance reported in journalism, not a clinical guideline or a head-to-head test of mask specifications. TIME’s overview of at-home red light masks.

Manufacturer specifications are another kind of evidence: they tell you what a product claims to emit, not whether those wavelengths have been shown to produce a particular outcome. For example, CurrentBody lists 633 nm red, 830 nm near-infrared, and 1072 nm deep near-infrared for its Series 3 mask. Treat those as specifications for that named product and generation, not as an efficacy ranking. CurrentBody Series 3 product page.

Check fit and facial coverage

A mask only treats the areas it covers in a usable position. Check how it sits across your forehead, cheeks, nose, mouth, jaw, and around the eyes; whether it stays in place; and whether its eye inserts or other protection work for you. A wearable full-face design may make consistent positioning easier than a handheld device if your goal is even facial coverage, but fit varies by face and the cited sources do not establish one shape as best for everyone.

TIME quotes a dermatologist advising that a device should touch or nearly touch the skin so energy can be absorbed. This is that expert’s practical guidance in an interview, not a formal device standard. Consider it alongside the model’s instructions and how securely the mask actually fits.

Read safety directions for the exact model

Follow the manufacturer’s directions for treatment duration, schedule, eye precautions, cleaning, and contraindications. Do not assume that instructions for one mask apply to another. TIME reports dermatologist advice to use a device only for its recommended period; its article also notes that at-home masks use lower energy levels than office treatments. Lower energy does not make it appropriate to ignore the manual or individual medical concerns.

TIME’s interviewed dermatologists advise people with sensitive skin or light sensitivity to avoid use unless a doctor approves it. If you have a pigment condition, take medication that may affect light sensitivity, or have a particular eye concern, ask a clinician whether the exact device and instructions are appropriate for you. The article is not a complete contraindication list, and its general advice is not a substitute for personalized medical guidance.

Understand what FDA records do—and do not—say

Look up the precise model and intended use in the FDA record rather than relying on a generic “FDA-cleared” badge or a brand-level claim. A 510(k) decision concerns a named submission and compares a device with a legally marketed predicate; it is not blanket FDA approval of all masks or confirmation of every marketing claim.

The FDA record for CurrentBody LED 4 in 1 Zone Facial Mapping Mask (K242593) records a substantially equivalent decision dated February 14, 2025, in the “Light Based Over The Counter Wrinkle Reduction” category. A separate summary concerns the CurrentBody Skin LED Multi Light Therapy Mask (K260715); it lists wavelengths including 633 nm visible red, 830 nm non-visible red, and 1072 nm non-visible red among other modes or wavelengths. These are separate records for named devices, not interchangeable evidence for every product in a brand’s range. FDA record K242593; FDA summary K260715.

Use the same checklist for every mask

Put the candidates side by side and verify each point against the manual, product listing, study, or regulatory record for that exact model. Product versions, availability, and listings can change.

  • Intended use: Which concern does the manufacturer say it addresses, and what evidence supports that outcome?
  • Evidence match: Is the study on this device, a sufficiently similar protocol, and the same outcome—or is the claim based on a different device or general guidance?
  • Light specifications: What wavelengths, tolerances, irradiance, or dose are stated? Which are supported by evidence relevant to your concern?
  • Fit and protection: Does the mask cover your target areas and stay positioned? Are eye inserts or other protections supplied, and do they suit you?
  • Safety directions: What are the treatment duration and schedule, eye precautions, cleaning instructions, and listed contraindications? When should you seek clinician advice?
  • Regulatory record: Does an FDA record match the exact model and intended use? What wording does it actually use?
  • Practical use: Can you use it consistently and comfortably? Check controller and charging arrangements, warranty and return terms, and current availability directly with the seller.
