What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The only defensible way to compare real-time AI video models is to test them as interactive systems, not to compare marketing labels. Verify that each endpoint accepts the inputs you need, streams or updates video during an interaction, and can meet your latency target. Then run identical prompts and media through every candidate, measure startup and update latency, score quality with a task-specific rubric, and convert each bill to the cost of an accepted second at the same resolution and quality.
No controlled, independently measured cross-vendor benchmark establishes a universal fastest, best-looking, or cheapest model. Vendor specifications and prices are useful for planning; a matched test on your workload is what supports a production decision.

Define “real-time video” before comparing models
“Real-time” describes a workload property. A model qualifies only if it produces or updates video while the user is interacting with it, rather than returning a completed clip after an offline job. A product name containing “realtime” is not proof of video support: OpenAI’s GPT-Realtime-2 documentation lists video as unsupported even though the model is explicitly described as realtime.

Write a workload contract
Before sending a request, specify what “good enough” means for your product. A live coaching tool may need the first recognizable frame in less than a second and rapid response when the user changes direction. A virtual production preview may tolerate a longer startup if it can sustain a higher-quality stream afterward. State the target resolution, frame rate, clip or session length, acceptable artifact rate, audio requirement, and maximum cost per accepted second.
- Interaction: text-only prompts, image conditioning, video conditioning, audio, or a live multimodal stream.
- Output: resolution, aspect ratio, frame rate, duration, audio, and whether frames arrive incrementally.
- Responsiveness: startup deadline, steady-state rate, and maximum delay after an instruction change.
- Reliability: tolerated failure rate, retry policy, and behavior when a request is cancelled.
- Economics: monthly accepted seconds, peak concurrency, storage or egress costs, and budget ceiling.
Measure latency at four separate points
One “latency” number hides the user experience. Capture timestamps from a monotonic clock on the client and server where possible, and keep network and queue time visible rather than silently subtracting it.
Request to first frame
Start the timer when the request is submitted and stop when the first decodable video frame arrives. This measures perceived startup, but the first frame may be a blank, corrupted, or unusable image. Record transport errors and decoding failures separately.
Request to usable frame
Define “usable” in advance—for example, a decodable frame that contains the requested subject and passes your minimum resolution and artifact checks. Stop the timer at the first frame meeting that rule. This is usually more meaningful for an interactive preview than first-byte latency.
Steady-state generation
After startup, measure delivered frames over a fixed interval. Report effective frames per second, gaps, jitter, and whether generation keeps pace with playback. A model can have a fast first frame but stall later, forcing buffering or repeated substitutions.
Response to an instruction change
At a predetermined timestamp, send an identical instruction update to every system. Measure the time until the output visibly reflects the change and the time until it becomes stable enough for use. If a service restarts the clip instead of editing the current scene, count that behavior as part of the update latency and describe the visual discontinuity.
Use distributions, not a single fastest run
Repeat each condition enough times to expose queueing and transient failures. Publish the median and useful tail percentiles such as p90 or p95, along with the number of successful, failed, timed-out, and retried runs. Include warm and cold starts if the service distinguishes them. A single best-case number is not a capacity plan.

Build a fair, reproducible test set
Choose prompts and inputs that represent the scenes your product will actually generate. Include simple and difficult cases, because an average prompt can hide failures on hands, text, reflections, fast motion, multiple subjects, or scene changes.
Use the same inputs and settings
Keep wording, reference images, source video, aspect ratio, duration, seed policy, guidance settings, and safety settings identical wherever the APIs expose equivalent controls. If a parameter has no cross-vendor equivalent, leave it at the documented default and disclose that difference. Do not compare a high-resolution output from one service with a low-resolution output from another and call the result a quality win.
Separate test categories
- Text-to-video: tests prompt adherence, composition, motion, and temporal stability without a reference asset.
- Image-to-video: tests preservation of identity, geometry, and camera movement from the same still image.
- Video-to-video or continuation: tests consistency across an existing sequence and the model’s response to a changed direction.
- Interactive updates: tests how quickly a live scene reacts to successive instructions, not merely how quickly an isolated clip renders.
- Audio-bearing output: tests synchronization, intelligibility, and whether audio changes the price or available resolution.
Control the environment
Run candidates from the same client region when practical, or disclose the region for every run. Record account tier, service tier, API version, hardware for self-hosted systems, concurrency, network path, and time of day. Hosted services may queue requests differently by account or region. Self-hosted tests must name the GPU, memory, driver, serving stack, batch size, and any quantization.
Score quality independently from speed
Do not infer comparative quality from words such as “cinematic,” “next-generation,” or “high fidelity.” Use the same outputs and a written rubric. A five-point scale is adequate if every score has an operational definition.
| Dimension | What to inspect | Example scoring anchor |
|---|---|---|
| Prompt adherence | Subjects, actions, setting, camera direction, style, and requested count | 1 means the requested action or subject is absent; 5 means all material constraints are satisfied |
| Temporal stability | Identity, geometry, textures, lighting, and background continuity across frames | 1 means frequent flicker or identity drift; 5 means stable throughout the usable segment |
| Motion continuity | Whether movement follows a plausible path without jumps, frozen sections, or sudden speed changes | 1 means broken or contradictory motion; 5 means smooth, coherent motion |
| Artifact frequency | Warping, extra limbs, tearing, unreadable text, noise, and decoding defects | 1 means artifacts regularly block use; 5 means none are visible at the target viewing size |
| Interactive coherence | Whether an instruction change is reflected without destroying the scene or subject | 1 means the update causes a disruptive restart; 5 means a timely, stable transition |
Have at least two reviewers score a blinded, randomized set when the decision matters. Show representative failures as well as attractive examples. Keep dimensions separate; a single unexplained composite score can conceal a model that is excellent at prompt adherence but poor at temporal stability. If you calculate an overall score, publish the weights and the unweighted dimension results.
Normalize cost to an accepted second
Providers bill different units, and output configuration can change the rate. Convert every result to the same unit: dollars paid for accepted output seconds at the target resolution, aspect ratio, audio setting, and quality threshold. Define an accepted second as a second that passes your usability rule; do not divide by requested duration when a failed or discarded segment was billed.
For a simple hosted comparison, use:
normalized cost per accepted second = total provider charges for the test ÷ accepted output seconds

Include input charges, subscription or credit purchases, minimum charges, retries, storage, and egress when they apply to your deployment. Report whether tax is included. | Google Veo 3.1 Lite | $0.05 per second at 720p; $0.08 per second at 1080p | 4K is listed as unsupported for Lite. |
| Google Gemini API input | $1.00 per 1 million input tokens | The page states this temporary price applies to text, image, video, or audio input through December 31, 2026. Verify whether it applies to your endpoint and billing account. |
| Alibaba Cloud Model Studio, Wan 3.0 480P | $0.041256 per second | The page labels this a limited-time 30% discount; do not use it as a durable list price. |
Alibaba Cloud Model Studio describes video cost as the output-video unit price multiplied by successful output duration in seconds. It notes that price can vary by resolution, edition, and aspect ratio, and that failed requests incur no cost and do not consume free quota under the stated policy. Confirm those conditions for the exact model and region before relying on them in a forecast.
Make credit and token billing comparable
For credit-based services, show both credits per second and the implied dollar rate using the published credit price. For token-priced inputs, count tokens for the same prompt and reference material and add that amount to output generation cost. If one service charges for requested seconds while another charges only for successful seconds, publish both the nominal rate and your observed accepted-second rate.
Run the comparison step by step
- Freeze the scope. Write the workload contract, target resolution, duration, audio requirement, latency limits, quality threshold, and monthly volume.
- Select representative cases. Prepare identical prompts, reference media, update instructions, and expected outputs. Include difficult motion and continuity cases.
- Verify modality and endpoint behavior. Confirm that each candidate supports the required inputs, output format, streaming mode, region, and concurrency. Remove any model that cannot perform the required interaction rather than scoring it as slow.
- Pin configuration. Record model version, API version, account tier, region, resolution, aspect ratio, duration, seed or randomness policy, safety settings, and hardware if self-hosted.
- Instrument timestamps. Capture submission, acknowledgement, first byte, first decodable frame, first usable frame, every frame arrival, instruction-update submission, visible update, stable update, completion, cancellation, and failure.
- Repeat under fixed load. Run enough repetitions for median and tail percentiles. Test the concurrency level expected in production and a lower-load baseline to reveal queueing.
- Preserve outputs and logs. Store the exact prompt, input hashes, settings, timestamps, response headers where permitted, billing record, retry reason, and output files. Never replace a failed run silently.
- Score quality blind. Randomize and anonymize outputs for reviewers. Apply the same rubric, record each dimension separately, and retain examples of common artifacts.
- Calculate normalized economics. Add generation, input, retry, minimum, subscription, storage, and egress charges that your deployment incurs. Divide by accepted seconds at the target settings.
- Publish uncertainty. State sample size, success rate, percentiles, reviewer count, confidence intervals or score spread where available, and every condition that limits generalization.
Report results so another team can reproduce them
A useful report starts with a configuration table rather than a ranking. Include model and version, endpoint, access date, geography, resolution, aspect ratio, input type, output duration, audio mode, concurrency, service tier or hardware, and failure and retry policy.

Account for operational constraints beyond the headline metrics
| Constraint | Questions to answer | Why it can change the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Modality | Does the endpoint accept text, image, video, audio, or live input, and can it combine them? | A low-latency text model is unusable if your product depends on a camera stream. |
| Streaming and playback | Are frames delivered incrementally, in chunks, or only after completion? Is the output directly decodable? | Chunked or delayed delivery can make a fast generation time feel non-interactive. |
| Resolution and audio | Which combinations are supported, and do they change price or latency? | Higher resolution and audio can alter both economics and queueing. |
| Concurrency | What are quotas, rate limits, queue behavior, and scaling rules? | A model that wins at one request may miss your service-level target at peak load. |
| Failure billing | Are failed, cancelled, or retried jobs charged or counted against quota? | Failure policy directly affects accepted-second cost. |
| Regional availability | Is the model offered in the users’ region, and where is data processed? | Region changes network latency, legal exposure, and sometimes the available model edition. |
| Version stability | Can you pin a version and receive deprecation notice? | Unpinned updates can change quality, latency, or price without a code change. |
Turn measurements into a deployment choice
Start by eliminating candidates that fail a hard requirement: unsupported modality, unavailable region, insufficient resolution, unacceptable privacy terms, or a latency tail above the product limit. Among the remaining systems, compare a three-axis profile rather than a single score.
Latency profile
Use startup and instruction-update percentiles for interactive feel, then check steady-state delivery for sustained playback. If p95 update latency is too high, a lower median will not rescue the experience.
Quality profile
Weight the dimensions that affect your task. A graphics preview may prioritize prompt adherence and temporal stability; an educational avatar may prioritize identity preservation, readable text, and audio synchronization. Keep the threshold explicit so a cheaper model is not credited for outputs you would discard.
Cost profile
Calculate cost at expected concurrency and accepted seconds, not at the provider’s smallest advertised unit. Model retries and discarded seconds. Run sensitivity checks for higher resolution, longer sessions, more users, and price changes after a promotion ends.
A practical decision matrix can label each candidate as pass, conditional, or fail for every hard requirement, then compare the remaining options on p95 latency, median quality dimensions, accepted-second cost, and operational risk. If two candidates are close, prefer the one whose results remain stable across regions, loads, and repeated runs rather than the one with the best isolated number.
Common comparison mistakes and fixes
Mistaking a brand label for a capability
Failure: selecting a model because its name says realtime. Fix: verify documented video input and output, streaming semantics, and the exact endpoint.

Failure: comparing outputs from different model revisions or regions. Fix: pin versions where possible and record access date and geography.
What a credible final comparison can and cannot claim
A credible report can say that one configuration produced a lower p95 usable-frame latency than another under the named conditions, achieved higher rubric scores on the supplied prompts, or cost less per accepted second at the tested resolution. It cannot claim that model is universally fastest, best, or cheapest without broader controlled evidence. Prices and endpoint behavior are volatile, so recheck the live vendor pages before committing budget or publishing a figure.
