Compare several customer-review sources and inspect how expert tests were conducted; don’t decide from a star average or a single overall score. First confirm that each source covers the exact model and variant you’re considering. Then judge whether its evidence—owner experience, measured performance, or both—answers the question that matters for your use.
How to evaluate customer reviews
Retailer pages are useful, but they are only one source. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends comparing reviews across retailer and review sites, search engines, app stores, and social platforms, and considering who posted them and where. Its guidance is to read reviews critically rather than treating ratings as a verdict.

FTC guidance on evaluating online reviews warns that it can be difficult to tell a genuine review from a fake one just by looking. Fake reviews can be positive or negative, so neither enthusiasm nor harsh criticism alone establishes that a review is deceptive.
- Check timing. A sudden cluster of reviews can be a reason to look more closely, not proof of manipulation. See whether the reviews offer specific details or repeat similar claims.
- Look at reviewer history where available. A new account with only one review may merit caution, but it is not conclusive by itself.
- Notice incentive disclosures. Some platforms label reviews when a reviewer received a product or other benefit; not all do. An incentive is relevant context, not automatic evidence that a review is false.
- Read the substance, not only the stars. Look for details about durability, setup, performance, or service that match your intended use. The FTC’s online-shopping guidance says not to rely on star ratings alone because some ratings and reviews may be fake or misleading.
How to judge an expert test
A test result is more useful when the publisher explains what it tested and how. Check whether it identifies the sample, protocol or benchmark, measurements, and test date. Also ask whether the publisher explains limits that could affect how well the result applies to your decision.

Consumer Reports’ description of its testing approach says it develops test protocols and buys products for testing, including through secret shoppers. It also combines lab performance with owner survey data on reliability and satisfaction. That describes Consumer Reports’ own methodology, not a universal standard for all testing publishers.
- Identify the kind of evidence. A lab measurement reports performance under stated test conditions. Owner reports can reveal experiences over time, including reliability or satisfaction, but they are not the same as a controlled performance measurement.
- Check the exact model and variant. A test of a different size, configuration, generation, or model number may not apply to the item for sale. The FTC recommends recording the manufacturer and model number and other relevant details when comparison shopping.
- Match the criterion to your needs. An overall score may not tell you whether a product performs well on the feature you care about most. Inspect the relevant sub-scores or measurements if the publisher provides them.
- Check the test date and product version. Don’t assume a result for an older version remains valid for a current one. The cited sources do not establish a universal schedule for retesting products.
Compare evidence by the question it answers
There is no universal formula for weighting owner reviews against lab results. A controlled measurement may help answer how a device performs on a specific task; owner reports may help reveal recurring experiences or problems over time. Which matters more depends on the product, your use, and how long you expect to keep it. Consumer Reports’ stated approach combines these types of evidence rather than treating them as interchangeable.

| Evidence | Useful for | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Customer reviews | Reported day-to-day use, recurring complaints, and experiences with setup or support | Source, timing, reviewer history where available, incentive disclosure, model, and relevance to your use |
| Expert test results | Measured performance against a stated protocol or benchmark | Publisher’s method, exact model and version, test date, measured criteria, and limitations |
| Owner surveys included in ratings | Reported reliability or satisfaction across owners, when the publisher provides that evidence | Whether the result is survey-based rather than a lab measurement, and what product population it covers |
Verify the item and the total price
Before using a review or test to choose between offers, make sure the listings refer to the same manufacturer and model, including relevant size or variant. Then compare the full cost—not just the displayed item price—including shipping, handling, delivery charges, taxes, and other fees. The FTC’s shopping guidance recommends comparing customer reviews across sources and checking product details and costs when comparison shopping.
- Write down the manufacturer, model number, and variant you intend to buy.
- Match each review or test to that exact item; treat results for another version as a separate piece of evidence.
- Record what each source actually measures or reports, along with its date and method where stated.
- Compare the features and owner experiences relevant to your planned use.
- Compare the offers’ total prices and conditions, including applicable fees and delivery costs.
What review manipulation means for a buyer
In its 2024 final-rule document, the FTC recounts a study estimating consumer losses of $0.12 per dollar spent in an experimental setting. That estimate concerns a limited set of review-manipulation types in the cited study; it is not a universal estimate of losses from fake reviews across products, platforms, or circumstances. The FTC’s Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule materials address fake and false reviews and link to related endorsement and disclosure resources. This legal context is U.S.-specific; the cited material does not establish requirements in other jurisdictions.

- IDENTIFY WHICH FOODS MAY BE CAUSING YOUR SYMPTOMS. Food intolerances happen when your gut microbiome and digestive enzymes can’t break down a food ingredient. Although gluten and lactose are the most common issues, intolerances can happen with any food item. When these intolerances go unchecked, symptoms like headaches, gas, diarrhea, acne, and bloating may develop.
- TESTS 800 COMMON FOOD ITEMS. Our food intolerance test for adults and children covers 14 major food categories: dairy, vegetables, fruits, grains, meats, seafood, nuts, sweeteners, spices, fats, oils, mushrooms, superfoods, and preservatives.
- HOW IT WORKS. (1) Register your test kit on the 5Strands website or mobile app (2) Collect 10-15 strands of hair. (3) Send your sample to our certified lab using the included prepaid shipping materials. (4) Once your sample is received, we’ll email you the results within 4 days. After 60 days, your hair sample will be permanently disposed of.
- EASY TO READ RESULTS. Each food item is labeled as Insignificant, Mild, Moderate, or Severe to help guide your elimination plan. This gives you clear directions to begin removing severe intolerance foods, moderate your intake of mid-level triggers, and keep safe foods in rotation to support gut health, digestion, and symptom relief.
- 3RD PARTY STUDIED & DOCTOR RECOMMENDED. 5Strands is the only intolerance and sensitivity test independently validated through third-party research. Every sample is processed in our certified U.S. lab using a double-pass method for accurate results, and our testing has helped over 345,000 people and pets uncover their food intolerances and environmental sensitivities.
A practical decision rule
Give more weight to evidence that is transparent, tied to the exact product, and relevant to your intended use. Treat unexplained ratings and scores as leads to investigate rather than proof. If a source does not say what was tested, how, or which model it tested, you have less basis for applying its result to your purchase.
