How to Compare Prime Day Deals With Prices at Other Retailers

To tell whether a Prime Day deal is genuinely worth buying, compare the exact same product and configuration at other retailers, then compare the amount you would actually pay at checkout—not just Amazon’s discount badge. Check the item’s price history for context, and weigh seller, condition, returns, and warranty alongside price.

Start with an identical product and offer

Before comparing prices, confirm that each listing is for the same item. Match the model number or other exact identifier, along with options that affect price or usefulness:

  • Size, color, storage capacity, or other configuration
  • Pack count or bundle contents
  • New, refurbished, or open-box condition
  • The seller, including whether it is the retailer or a marketplace seller
  • Warranty coverage

A cheaper listing for a different configuration or condition is not a like-for-like deal. If you cannot verify that the products match, treat the comparison as uncertain.

Check the product’s Amazon price history

Amazon’s Price History feature offers 30-, 90-, and 365-day views where available. Amazon says availability varies by feature and market: the feature is currently available in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and India, while its 365-day insight is rolling out in the U.S., U.K., and India. See Amazon’s Price History information for current details.

Use the graph to ask the questions shoppers care about: “Is this the lowest price recently?”, “What was the price last Prime Day?”, “Was it cheaper last Black Friday?”, and “Is the Prime Day price lower than what it typically costs?” Look at a longer view as well as the recent price so a brief spike or short-lived discount does not dominate your judgment. History puts today’s offer in context; it does not show whether another store currently has a lower checkout price.

Compare the live offer at other retailers

Search the exact model number or identifier at several reputable retailers. Confirm that the listing is in stock and check its seller and condition; marketplace, refurbished, and open-box offers may not be equivalent to a new item sold directly by a retailer.

Price-history services such as CamelCamelCamel and Keepa can add context for Amazon listings. They are not complete records: WIRED notes that some Lightning Deals may be absent from CamelCamelCamel history and that these services may not work consistently. If a tool shows little data or conflicts with another source, do not call the offer a “lowest ever” price based on that evidence alone. Use the visible listings and available history, and regard the comparison as uncertain. See WIRED’s Prime Day shopping guide.

Compare what you will actually pay—and the terms

For each matching offer, work out the amount due at checkout after eligible discounts and delivery charges. Note whether a coupon must be clipped or a membership is required, and whether pickup or delivery conditions affect the offer. Then compare the terms that can change the value of a close-priced deal:

The FTC recommends reading deal terms, using comparison-shopping sites, and checking whether a seller has a price-match policy. A match is not automatic: verify the retailer’s current policy and whether your specific offer qualifies. FTC online shopping guidance.

Read Amazon’s savings labels as context, not a verdict

Amazon describes its List Price as a validated reference price. It says its Typical or “Was” Price is based on a 90-day median paid price, excluding limited-time deal prices from that calculation. Amazon also says it aims to offer deals at its lowest price in at least the preceding 30 days. These are descriptions of Amazon’s methodology and stated goal—not a guarantee that its checkout price is lower than another retailer’s current price. Details are in Amazon’s pricing and discount information.

A “was” or “regular” price comparison also needs context. FTC guidance says a former price can provide a legitimate basis for a comparison when it was a bona fide price offered to the public regularly for a reasonably substantial period. An unusual-looking discount label alone does not establish that a retailer has violated the law. See the FTC’s Guides Against Deceptive Pricing, 16 CFR § 233.1.

A repeatable comparison workflow

  1. Before the event: Save the item and note its exact model or identifier, configuration, and seller.
  2. When a deal appears: Check the Amazon price-history view available to you. Compare the recent price with a longer range, if offered.
  3. Search elsewhere: Look up the exact identifier at several reputable retailers. Check stock, seller, and condition.
  4. Calculate the checkout total: Include shipping and eligible coupons, and note membership requirements and delivery or pickup terms.
  5. Compare protections: Check return and warranty terms, then consider seller reputation and convenience if prices are close.
  6. Resolve uncertainty honestly: If history tools disagree or show too little data, rely on visible retailer listings and describe the price comparison as uncertain rather than claiming a record low.

The U.S. fall event immediately ahead of this article’s date is Prime Big Deal Days, scheduled for October 6–7, 2026. Amazon distinguishes that fall event from its summer Prime Day event, and dates vary by country; check Amazon’s event announcement for the U.S. schedule and current details.
