A large percentage discount is only useful when its reference price is genuine and the final terms do not erase the saving.
The four checks that answer “Is this sale price actually a good deal?”
- Match the exact item: manufacturer, model number, size, colour, configuration, capacity and condition must be the same.
- Calculate the final payable total: include shipping, handling, taxes, delivery charges, service fees and any required add-ons.
- Compare independent context: check several reputable sellers, the manufacturer’s official shop where available, and a price-history record.
- Audit the discount claim: identify the reference price, read the conditions and confirm that optional products or subscriptions have not been added.
These checks are more reliable than the crossed-out number beside a product. A listing can show a dramatic percentage reduction while still costing more than the same item elsewhere or more than it did recently.

1. Match the exact product before comparing prices
“The same product” means more than the same brand family or a similar photograph. Open each listing and record the details that affect price and performance.
- Manufacturer and complete model or part number
- Storage, memory, dimensions, screen size, wattage or other capacity
- Colour and regional variant
- Included accessories, software, warranty and bundled services
- New, refurbished, open-box or used condition
- Unlocked, carrier-specific or otherwise restricted configuration
A 256 GB device and a 128 GB version may look identical in a search result but are different offers. So are a camera body sold without a lens and a kit that includes one. If a seller hides the model number, treat the listing as unverified rather than assuming the cheapest result is equivalent.

For appliances, replacement parts and electronics, copy the model number into each seller’s page and check the manufacturer’s specification sheet. For clothing, match the material, cut and size system; a “medium” is not consistent across manufacturers. For software or memberships, compare the licence period, number of users and renewal terms.
2. Compare the total checkout cost, not the headline price
The meaningful number is what you must pay to receive the item. Start with the advertised item price, then add every mandatory charge and subtract only discounts you can actually use.

| Required purchase | Does the low price require buying a bundle, joining a programme or using a particular payment method? |
| Optional add-ons | Remove insurance, accessories, extended warranties and subscriptions unless you want them. |
Use the same delivery address and, where possible, the same delivery speed when comparing sellers. A seller that appears $10 cheaper can become more expensive after a $15 delivery charge or a required accessory.

3. Compare several sellers and treat rankings as leads
Check at least two or three reputable retailers and, when available, the product maker’s official site. Record the seller, price, stock status, delivery estimate and return policy at the same time because sale inventory and shipping promises can change quickly.

Price-comparison services are useful for finding candidates, but their coverage and ranking methods differ. Some sites list or rank products when sellers pay for placement. A top result is therefore not proof that it is the cheapest or best-supported offer. Open the merchant listing, verify the model and calculate its checkout total yourself.
Also check who fulfils the order. A marketplace page may show one company as the seller and another as the fulfiller, with different returns or warranty responsibilities. Save the legal seller name and contact details before paying.

4. Use price history to put the “was” price in context
A price-history website or browser extension can show whether today’s price is unusual compared with earlier prices. Look for the lowest, typical and highest recorded prices over a meaningful period, and note whether the record covers the exact variant you are considering.
History is evidence for your decision, not a legal ruling. Tracking may be incomplete, may combine variants, or may miss prices from a particular region. A sudden one-day spike can make a later discount look larger even when the item was cheaper for much of the year. Use the history alongside current offers from other sellers.
When a tool displays a chart, check its coverage date, currency and seller list. If it does not explain how it collects prices, treat the chart as a rough signal rather than a precise record.

5. Find out what the reference price means
Discount percentages are calculated from a reference price, often labelled “was,” “regular,” “list” or “recommended.” Ask four questions:
- Was the item actually offered at that reference price?
- For how long and in which country or sales channel?
- Does the reference apply to this exact variant and condition?
- Are there conditions that change the comparison, such as a minimum spend, membership or required second purchase?
A manufacturer’s suggested retail price is not automatically the price a retailer recently charged. Nor is a high price on an obscure listing proof that a discount is real. Compare the reference with independent seller prices and the product’s history.
EU reference-price rule
Your Europe states that traders in EU countries generally must show the lowest price applied to an item during at least the 30 days before announcing a price reduction. Exceptions and detailed application can depend on the product, the sequence of reductions and national implementation, so the rule should not be treated as a universal formula for every promotion.
United States context
The Federal Trade Commission shopping guidance used for this topic supports comparing sellers, reading terms, checking the total cost and assessing comparison-site incentives. It does not establish a general United States requirement equivalent to the EU 30-day prior-price rule. State laws and particular enforcement actions can impose additional obligations, but those are not summarized here.
6. What the European Commission’s 2026 sweep found
A coordinated European Commission check of online traders during Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales reported substantial problems in its sample. The figures describe the traders checked, not all online sellers:

The sweep supports a practical habit: inspect the reference-price explanation and every line in the basket. It does not prove that a particular seller acted unlawfully, and it cannot be generalized to every sale.
7. Inspect the cart for optional products and conditional discounts
After selecting the product, open the cart before entering payment details. Remove anything you did not intentionally choose, including protection plans, accessories, recurring memberships, charity contributions and expedited delivery.
Read the wording beside the discount. “With code,” “when buying two,” “new customers only,” “after joining,” and “with selected payment method” are materially different offers. Check the required quantity, expiry time, geographical restriction and whether a subscription renews automatically.
Take a screenshot or save a PDF of the product page, promotion terms, cart and confirmation. Include the date, displayed currency and delivery destination. Keep the receipt and order email; these records help if the charged amount differs from the advertised offer.
8. Check the seller, fulfilment and after-sale terms
A low price is not necessarily the best offer if the seller cannot deliver or makes returns impractical. Before ordering, verify:
- The seller’s legal name, physical address and customer-service route
- Estimated dispatch and delivery dates, including cross-border delays
- Return window, return shipping responsibility and restocking charges
- Warranty provider and procedure
- Refund method and timing if the item is unavailable
- Whether the item is shipped by the retailer, the marketplace or a third party
Consumer guidance from the Federal Trade Commission recommends checking a seller or product name with words such as “complaint” or “scam.” Search results are not conclusive, but repeated unresolved complaints are a reason to choose a better-documented seller.
9. A repeatable step-by-step comparison method
- Define the target: write down the exact model number, variant, condition and required accessories.
- Collect offers: open several reputable sellers and the official manufacturer shop if one exists.
- Normalize the offers: select the same quantity, delivery speed, destination and payment method.
- Calculate totals: add shipping, taxes and fees; remove unwanted add-ons; apply only discounts you qualify for.
- Record reference prices: note the crossed-out price, its explanation and all conditions.
- Check history: compare the current price with a price-history record for the same variant and region.
- Evaluate risk: compare fulfilment, delivery estimate, returns, warranty and seller identity.
- Preserve evidence: save the offer and receipt before completing payment.
Choose the offer with the lowest credible total that meets your delivery, return and warranty requirements—not automatically the listing with the largest percentage discount.
10. Compare two offers on the same axes

11. Worked example: why the percentage can mislead
Suppose two listings show the same headphones. Seller A advertises $120, reduced from $200, but adds $18 shipping and $12 tax. Seller B lists $135, reduced from $160, with free shipping and $14 tax. The payable totals are $150 for A and $149 for B. Seller A claims the larger discount, yet B costs less.

Now add history: if Seller A sold the headphones for $125 for most of the previous month, its $200 reference price gives little context for a buyer deciding whether to purchase today. If Seller B’s $160 reference is supported by recent listings and the model is identical, B has the stronger evidence even though its percentage reduction is smaller. The numbers in this example are illustrative; use your own checkout totals and history.
12. What to do when a discount looks false or the price changes
Before paying
Do not rely on a countdown timer or a claim that stock is almost gone. Recheck the model, open the reference-price explanation, remove add-ons and compare the final total elsewhere. If the seller will not identify the item, terms or delivery cost clearly, leave the page.
After ordering
Save the confirmation and contact the seller in writing if the charged amount, item or terms differ from the offer. State the advertised price, the date, the order number and the correction you seek. Keep screenshots and payment records.
If the concern remains
Use the relevant consumer-protection authority or consumer association for your country. Provide the listing, reference-price statement, checkout record and correspondence. A price-history chart can support your explanation, but it does not by itself establish a legal violation.

A trustworthy sale survives scrutiny at the product, checkout, history and seller levels. Match the exact variant, compare the complete payable total, verify what the reference price represents, and treat rankings or dramatic percentages as starting points rather than proof. The EU’s 30-day lowest-price rule is jurisdiction-specific, and the 2026 European Commission sweep shows why careful cart and discount checks matter without proving that every retailer is misleading.
