To find out whether a phone is really cheaper abroad, compare the same unlocked model and configuration, convert each listed price using one dated exchange-rate benchmark, then add shipping, checkout taxes, payment fees and any import costs for your destination. A converted sticker price is only a starting point: the exchange rate used by your card may differ from the benchmark, and import charges depend on where and how the phone enters your country.
1. Make sure you are comparing the same phone
Start with the exact model, storage capacity and, where relevant, colour. Check whether it is unlocked and whether the offer includes a carrier plan, trade-in requirement or bundle. A lower price for a different memory size or a carrier-locked version is not an equivalent deal.

Retailer rules illustrate how specific a like-for-like comparison needs to be. Google Store’s price-match policy, for example, limits eligible comparisons to the same country and currency, requires the same model and applicable colour and memory, and specifies unlocked phone models. Those are Google’s rules, not a universal price-match standard: Google Store price-match policy.

2. Record each price, its date and whether tax is included
Write down the original amount and currency, the seller, the date you checked it and whether the displayed price includes tax. Do not compare a tax-inclusive price in one market with a pre-tax sticker price in another as if both were final totals.

Tax display varies by market and retailer. In a snapshot of official Apple Store prices in 41 countries collected on 11 September 2026, Pippin’s methodology says prices included tax in most covered countries, while the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico used pre-tax prices with tax estimates because sales tax varies by jurisdiction. That is a dated comparison of Apple prices, not a rule for every seller or phone: Pippin’s country-by-country iPhone price comparison and methodology.
3. Convert every offer with one dated benchmark
Choose one reference rate, record its source and date, and use it for every offer. This keeps the comparison consistent. For example, the European Central Bank reported EUR 1 = USD 1.1225 on 2 October 2026. That is a dated reference-rate observation, not a guaranteed rate for a card payment.

The ECB says its euro reference rates are generally updated on working days around 16:00 CET, are published for information purposes and are not recommended for transactions. Its guidance states, “Using the rates for transaction purposes is strongly discouraged.” Use a reference rate to compare offers; estimate an actual card payment using the rate and charges disclosed by your card issuer: European Central Bank euro foreign exchange reference rates.
4. Add the costs that affect what you will pay
For each seller, check the order total and add any costs that are not already included. Depending on the offer, these may include:

Google Store says its order confirmation shows a total including shipping and taxes, but warns that a card provider may add a cross-border or exchange fee on purchases from another country or region. This describes Google Store’s checkout and does not establish what another seller or card issuer will charge: Google Store charges and extra fees.
EU consumer guidance says online buyers should be clearly informed of the total price, including taxes and additional charges. Its rules and advice concern EU consumer purchases; check the rules that apply to the seller and your location: Your Europe: pricing, payments and price discrimination.

5. Choose carefully between local-currency and home-currency billing
A seller or payment terminal may offer to convert the price into your home currency instead of charging you in the seller’s local currency. EU guidance says paying in local currency is often cheapest and says a home-currency conversion should disclose its markup against the latest ECB reference rate. Compare that disclosed markup with your own card’s exchange-rate and foreign-transaction terms. Neither choice is guaranteed to be cheaper for every card and transaction.

Import VAT, customs duty, carrier fees and any available tourist refund depend on the destination’s rules and on whether the phone is shipped or carried home. There is no universal import-cost figure that can be added to every international phone comparison. Before buying, check the destination customs or tax authority’s guidance and confirm with the seller or carrier which charges are collected at checkout and which may be due on delivery. The actual warranty and service terms can also vary by seller, market and model, so read the terms for the specific offer.

Use a worksheet to compare the offers
Fill in one row per seller. Keep the original currency and conversion date visible so you can update the comparison if a rate or quote changes.
| Offer | Exact model and configuration | Local price and tax status | Conversion benchmark | Other costs to include | Estimated payable total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Store A | Model, storage, colour if relevant; unlocked? | Record currency and whether tax is included | Record rate source and date | Shipping, checkout taxes, card fee, destination import costs | Convert and add applicable costs |
| Store B | Model, storage, colour if relevant; unlocked? | Record currency and whether tax is included | Use the same rate source and date as Store A | Shipping, checkout taxes, card fee, destination import costs | Convert and add applicable costs |
Once the totals are estimated, compare the configuration, tax treatment, payment conversion, shipping and availability, seller and service terms, and destination import requirements. A lower converted price is a meaningful saving only if the offer remains lower after those differences are accounted for.
