How to compare personal loan offers from banks and NBFCs in India

Compare the personalized written offers—not the advertised “starting from” rate. Put every offer on the same footing: the same net amount you will actually receive and the same repayment tenure. Then use each lender’s Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Key Facts Statement (KFS), Annual Percentage Rate (APR), amortization schedule, total rupee repayment, fees, rate-reset rules and early-closure terms to choose.

A bank and a non-banking financial company (NBFC) are different types of regulated institutions, but neither category is automatically cheaper, safer or faster. The suitable offer is the one whose documented cost, repayment risk and service terms fit your circumstances.

What to collect before comparing offers

Ask every lender for a personalized sanction or offer document and the KFS before signing. A marketing page may show only a starting rate, while your approved rate depends on the lender’s assessment. Save the KFS, sanction letter, agreement, amortization schedule and all receipts in one folder.

Use one comparison baseline

Set a target net amount and tenure. For example, decide how much must reach your bank account and whether the loan should run for 24, 36 or another number of months. Do not compare a three-year offer with a five-year offer merely because the monthly EMI is lower.

If a lender deducts processing or other charges from disbursal, the sanctioned amount is not the amount available to you. Record both figures:

  • Sanctioned principal: the amount written in the approval.
  • Net disbursal: the amount that actually reaches your account after permitted deductions.
  • Repayment base: the principal on which interest and instalments are calculated.

For a fair cost comparison, use the same net amount received and the same tenure. If the lenders structure the principal differently, ask them to restate the offer or use the KFS figures to calculate the effective cost of the money you receive.

Confirm the documents are for the same borrower and purpose

Check your name, loan purpose, sanctioned date, principal, tenure and repayment frequency. A quote prepared for a different amount, employer profile or co-borrower is not a valid comparison. Keep the version and date of every document because terms can change before disbursal.

Read the RBI Key Facts Statement first

RBI’s KFS circular (RBI/2024-25/18, issued April 15, 2024) standardizes disclosures for retail and MSME term loans extended by regulated entities. New covered retail and MSME term loans sanctioned on or after October 1, 2024 must comply. The KFS must be supplied before you execute the contract, in a language you understand, and explained to you.

What the KFS should give you

  • The APR and an APR computation sheet.
  • An amortization or repayment schedule showing instalments over the tenure.
  • Interest and other charges associated with the credit facility.
  • Information needed to understand the repayment obligation and material conditions.

RBI defines APR as “the annual cost of credit to the borrower which includes interest rate and all other charges associated with the credit facility.” That makes APR more useful than a headline nominal rate when two offers have different fees.

Check the KFS validity and explanations

Read the KFS while the offer is still actionable. Ask the lender to explain an unfamiliar abbreviation, a charge shown only in a schedule, or any difference between the KFS and the agreement. Do not rely on an agent’s verbal assurance when a written term says something else.

Compare APR and total repayment together

APR captures the annualized cost, while the amortization schedule shows the rupee amount you will repay. Use both: APR helps normalize different fee structures, and total repayment tells you the cash leaving your account over the selected tenure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Measure What to record How to use it
APR The percentage and the accompanying computation sheet in the KFS Compare only with another APR calculated on a comparable principal and tenure; do not compare one lender’s APR with another lender’s nominal rate.
Total repayment Sum of scheduled principal and interest, plus charges included in the schedule Shows the total rupee outflow for the selected term.
EMI Instalment amount and due date or frequency Tests whether the payment fits your monthly cash flow.
Net amount received Disbursal after permitted deductions Prevents a low-looking cost from being based on a larger sanctioned amount than you actually receive.

Do not let a lower EMI decide the loan

A longer tenure can reduce the monthly instalment while increasing total interest and extending your exposure to rate changes. Compare the schedules over the same term before considering whether a longer period is worth the flexibility.

Use a simple worksheet

Create one row per offer and enter the KFS figures exactly. Add a calculated field for total repayment divided by net disbursal, but treat it as a descriptive ratio rather than a replacement for APR. Flag any offer where the lender will not provide a complete KFS or schedule.

Audit every fee and third-party charge

Make a complete list instead of looking only at “processing fee.” Typical categories in an offer may include lender charges, service or administrative charges, and third-party amounts such as insurance or legal charges. The exact categories and amounts depend on the contract.

Separate lender and third-party amounts

RBI requires third-party charges recovered by the lender to be included in APR and separately disclosed. Ask who receives each amount, when it is payable and for a receipt or related document. A fee described as optional should not be treated as compulsory without written terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check for omitted charges

A charge absent from the KFS generally cannot be collected during the loan unless you explicitly consent to it. If an agreement, app screen or demand later introduces a new amount, pause and ask the lender to identify the contractual basis and obtain your consent where required.

Normalize deductions from disbursal

Subtract every permitted deduction from the sanctioned amount to determine net disbursal. Compare two offers using that net figure, not a prominently displayed principal that never reaches you. Retain receipts so you can reconcile the amount credited with the KFS.

Understand fixed and floating-rate exposure

Regulated entities may offer fixed or floating advances. The rate type affects both predictability and the way your balance changes over time.

Feature Fixed-rate structure Floating-rate structure
Payment predictability The contract may keep the rate unchanged for the stated period, subject to its terms. A benchmark reset can change the EMI, the remaining tenor, or both.
What to inspect Any clause allowing a later reset, conversion or repricing. Benchmark, spread, reset frequency, notification method and choices available at reset.
Conversion Usually not relevant unless the contract permits a switch. A fixed-rate switch may be offered only at the lender’s option under its board-approved policy; check eligibility and charges.

What RBI requires for EMI-based floating personal loans

RBI’s direction issued August 18, 2023 (shown updated October 1, 2025) requires the lender to explain at sanction how benchmark changes could affect EMI and/or tenor, and to communicate later increases. At a reset, the borrower is to be given choices involving a higher EMI, a longer tenor, or a combination, along with partial or full prepayment options as applicable under the direction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A lender may offer a switch to a fixed rate, but the direction makes that a lender option governed by its board-approved policy; it is not a universal borrower entitlement. Any switch or administrative charge should be stated transparently.

The direction also says, “REs shall ensure that the elongation of tenor in case of floating rate loan does not result in negative amortisation.” In practical terms, extending the term must not cause the outstanding balance to grow because the scheduled payment fails to cover the interest due.

Use the quarterly statement as a monitoring tool

For a floating-rate EMI loan, the lender must make a quarterly statement available showing the principal and interest recovered, EMI amount, number of instalments left and the annualized rate or APR. Compare each statement with your own records and report a discrepancy promptly.

Examine the amortization schedule, not just the first EMI

The schedule shows how each instalment is allocated between principal and interest and how the balance declines. Check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Whether the first and subsequent EMIs are identical or change at reset.
  • The due date, instalment frequency and number of payments.
  • The opening balance, principal component and interest component for each period.
  • The projected closing balance and any final or balloon payment.
  • How a rate change would alter the EMI or remaining number of instalments.

If a schedule does not reconcile to the sanctioned principal, APR computation or stated EMI, ask for a corrected version before signing. An unexplained discrepancy is a decision blocker, not a minor formatting issue.

Read part-prepayment and foreclosure terms carefully

Look for separate rules for partial prepayment, full foreclosure and cancellation during any cooling-off or similar period stated in the contract. Record the minimum part-prepayment amount, notice period, number of permitted payments, recalculation method and every disclosed charge.

Do not apply one prepayment rule to every loan

Prepayment protections depend on the loan type, rate type, lender category, purpose and the sanction or renewal date. RBI’s floating-rate directions provide borrower choices around partial or full prepayment in the covered context. The Department of Financial Services summarizes protection for floating-rate term loans taken by individual, non-business borrowers. A separate RBI master-circular page states a specific rule for urban co-operative banks. These provisions should not be generalized to every personal loan or every lender.

Ask what happens after a part-prepayment

Some contracts reduce the EMI, others shorten the tenor, and some let you choose. Obtain the lender’s written recalculation and confirm whether interest is recomputed from the payment date. Keep the receipt and the revised schedule.

Compare eligibility, documentation and service terms

Cost is only one part of suitability. From the actual lender’s current material and your written offer, record:

  • Eligibility conditions that apply to your profile.
  • Documents required and whether originals, copies or digital verification are needed.
  • Expected disbursal sequence and the conditions that must be met first.
  • Repayment servicing channels, due-date changes and statement access.
  • Customer-care, nodal-officer and grievance-redress contacts.
  • How the lender handles failed payments, mandate changes and disputed charges.

Do not treat an agent’s promise of approval, a particular credit-score threshold or a guaranteed disbursal time as a contractual term unless the lender confirms it in writing. Current criteria and service quality vary and are not established by the regulatory disclosures alone.

Banks and NBFCs: what the institutional difference means

The Department of Financial Services describes NBFCs as companies regulated by RBI whose activities include lending and investment. It distinguishes them from banks on several structural points:

Institutional feature Banks NBFCs
Demand deposits Can accept demand deposits under the banking framework. Do not have the same ability to accept demand deposits.
Payment and settlement system Participate in payment and settlement systems as permitted under banking rules. Do not have equivalent participation rights solely by being an NBFC.
Cheques drawn on the institution Can issue cheques drawn on themselves. Cannot issue cheques drawn on themselves in the same manner.
Deposit insurance Bank depositors may have applicable deposit-insurance protection. NBFC depositors do not receive the same bank-deposit insurance treatment.

These are institutional distinctions, not a price ranking. They do not prove that a bank’s personal loan will cost less than an NBFC’s, or that an NBFC is inherently risky or more flexible. Compare the regulated lender’s actual KFS, APR, schedule, charges and service commitments on identical assumptions.

A practical comparison procedure

  1. Set the baseline. Choose the net amount you need and one tenure. Write down the date by which the money is required.
  2. Gather written offers. Obtain the personalized KFS, sanction letter, agreement draft, APR computation and amortization schedule from each lender.
  3. Verify the entity and scope. Confirm that the product is from the regulated bank or NBFC named in the documents and that the KFS rules apply to the loan.
  4. Calculate net disbursal. Subtract disclosed deductions and record the amount that will reach your account.
  5. Compare APRs correctly. Match APR with APR for the same principal and tenure; never match a nominal headline rate with an APR.
  6. Compare total rupees. Add the scheduled repayments and disclosed charges, noting which amounts are included in the schedule and which are paid separately.
  7. Audit fees. Identify lender charges, third-party charges, service fees and any amount that could be deducted from disbursal. Request receipts.
  8. Classify the rate. For floating loans, record the benchmark, spread, reset timing, communication method and available choices. For fixed loans, look for repricing or conversion clauses.
  9. Stress-test the schedule. Review how an EMI increase or tenor extension would affect your budget and whether the contract prevents negative amortisation.
  10. Read early-closure rules. Note part-prepayment and foreclosure conditions, charges, notice requirements and the revised-schedule process.
  11. Check service terms. Confirm documentation, disbursal steps, statement access and grievance contacts using current official lender material.
  12. Resolve discrepancies before signing. Ask for a corrected KFS or written clarification. Keep the final signed set and all payment receipts.

Red flags that should stop acceptance

  • The lender will not provide a KFS before contract execution.
  • The APR computation or amortization schedule is missing or cannot be reconciled with the EMI.
  • A fee appears in an app, email or agreement but not in the KFS, with no explanation or consent process.
  • The amount promised verbally differs from the sanctioned principal or net disbursal.
  • A floating-rate offer does not identify its benchmark, reset mechanism or communication process.
  • Prepayment charges are described as “standard” without identifying the applicable loan type and rule.
  • You are pressured to sign blank forms or transfer money to an individual rather than the lender’s documented channel.

Record-keeping and dispute handling

Maintain a dated folder containing the KFS, APR sheet, sanction letter, agreement, amortization schedules, disbursal proof, mandate details, statements, correspondence and receipts. If the lender changes an EMI or tenor, save the notice and the revised schedule.

When figures conflict, send a written query listing the exact document, page and amount. Ask the lender to confirm which term governs and to correct the record before you accept the loan. Escalate through the lender’s stated grievance channel if frontline support does not resolve the issue, retaining proof of your complaint.

Decision framework

After normalizing the offers, rank them in this order:

  1. Affordability: Can your budget sustain the scheduled EMI and a plausible floating-rate increase?
  2. Total cost: Which offer has the lower comparable APR and total rupee repayment for the same net amount and tenure?
  3. Flexibility: Are part-prepayment and foreclosure terms workable for your likely cash flows?
  4. Clarity: Are every charge, reset rule and repayment outcome documented in the KFS and agreement?
  5. Service and recourse: Can you obtain statements, receipts and effective grievance support?

Reject an offer that is marginally cheaper but unclear about a material charge or rate-reset consequence. Certainty about the obligation is part of the value of a loan.
