How to make an apples-to-apples fee comparison
Start by fixing the scenario. A retail spot order-book trade is not comparable to an instant purchase, a derivatives trade, or institutional custody. Record your country, the exact product and pair, order size, estimated rolling 30-day volume, and whether your order is likely to add or remove liquidity.

Maker and taker describe how an order executes, not simply whether it is a limit or market order. An order that rests on the book and is later matched may be maker; a limit order that fills immediately can be taker. Partial fills can also produce different execution outcomes. Keep simple-buy and order-book pricing separate
An app’s instant or simple-buy quote is a different route from an advanced order-book trade. Compare the route you would actually use, including its displayed price and charges. Kraken specifically excludes Instant Buy volume from its 30-day spot volume incentives, so that activity should not be assumed to raise a spot tier.

Compare the effective cost, not only the commission
The trading fee is only one part of what you pay. OKX explains that spread is the difference between available buy and sell prices, and that currency conversion may be charged in addition to a trading fee. Check the quoted buy or sell price, conversion, and any pair-specific fee alongside the commission. Add funding, deposit, withdrawal, and network charges only when they apply to your chosen route.
For a useful three-way check, enter the same pair and order size on each platform as close together in time as possible, and record the displayed execution price, fee, and any separate conversion or transfer charge. This is a comparison method, not a test of execution quality: prices and fees can change between previews.

What the custody information does—and does not—show
“Custody” can refer to an ordinary exchange balance, an institutional custody contract, or a reserve disclosure. These are not interchangeable. The available official materials do not establish an apples-to-apples comparison of retail custody terms across all three exchanges.

How to check whether a service is available where you live
Availability is a country-by-product question, not a single yes-or-no judgment about a brand. An exchange may allow account opening while a particular asset, fiat payment rail, derivatives product, rewards feature, or custody service is unavailable or restricted. Local terms and the entity providing the service can also differ.

- Choose the matching route: compare spot order book with spot order book, or instant purchase with the same type of purchase.
- Match the inputs: use the same country, pair, order size, 30-day volume assumptions, and expected execution behavior.
- Capture the actual quote: record commission, displayed price or spread, conversion charge, and any applicable funding or transfer costs.
- Verify custody terms: distinguish your retail account from an institutional product or a reserve report.
- Verify the feature, not just the exchange: check country eligibility for each asset, payment rail, and service you plan to use.
