How to Compare NGX Stocks by Returns, Liquidity, and Valuation

To compare NGX stocks fairly, use the same dates and return method for each share, examine trading activity over the same period, and interpret valuation against the financial results behind it. Then check company disclosures and corporate actions. These measures help you compare shares; they do not, by themselves, identify a “best” stock or predict future performance.

Start with a fair, like-for-like comparison

Choose the companies you want to compare and define a single measurement window before looking at their performance. Use the same start date and end date for every share. A comparison of one company’s one-month move with another’s annual return says little about their relative performance.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Write down the period, the price source, and whether you are comparing price change alone or return that also accounts for dividends. Those choices affect the result. A price increase is not automatically the full return an investor received, and a dividend is not a guarantee that the share price rose.

Keep the comparison reproducible

  • Use matching calendar dates and state them clearly.
  • Use the same kind of price observation for each share, such as closing prices at the beginning and end of the period.
  • Record whether the figures are adjusted for corporate actions and how dividends are treated.
  • Use the same observation window for trading activity and valuation wherever the underlying data allows.

If a stock did not trade on one of the dates you selected, do not quietly substitute a different date for that company. Find a consistent observation or explain the limitation. Otherwise, differences in the result may reflect the date selection rather than the companies.

Build a small comparison record

A compact record makes the comparison easier to check later. For each share, note the symbol and security name, the source and date of each price, the start and end prices, the dividend method, the trading period, and the financial reporting period used for any valuation measure. Keep these details together rather than recording only a final percentage or ratio. If you cannot establish that two inputs cover equivalent periods, flag the mismatch instead of implying precision.

NGX’s X-DataPortal describes historical equity information with fields such as ISIN, symbol, security name, market type, traded volume, number of trades, open, high, low, close, and current price. Those identifiers and observations help make clear which security and price field you used. The portal’s stated product scope and access terms can change, so check current NGX service details when selecting a source.

Compare returns without confusing price change with total return

A simple price return compares the share price at the end of a period with its price at the beginning:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Price return (%) = ((ending price − starting price) ÷ starting price) × 100

This calculation describes the change in the quoted price. It does not include dividends received. NGX explains that shareholders may benefit from share-price growth and/or dividends, and notes that some companies pay dividends regularly while others seldom pay or do not pay. For that reason, label a result “price return” unless you have also incorporated dividends.

Decide how to handle dividends

If you want to compare price-only performance, leave dividends out and say so. If you want a return measure that includes dividend income, gather the payments applicable to the period and state the method. A simple cash-dividend measure adds the eligible cash dividends per share to the ending price before comparing it with the starting price. A reinvested-dividend measure instead assumes those payments buy additional shares; it will not necessarily produce the same result.

Do not mix these methods across companies. Dividend frequency differs by company, and a comparison period may include a payment for one share but not another. Confirm the relevant payment dates and eligibility from company disclosures rather than assuming a payment was received merely because a company has paid dividends in the past.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check corporate actions before using historical prices

A price series can be difficult to interpret when a company has had a corporate action during the measurement window. NGX says corporate-action information is available through its feed and corporate-disclosures page. Check the relevant event and the treatment used by your price source before calculating the change. If the series is not adjusted for the event, disclose that limitation instead of presenting the result as a clean comparison.

NGX cautions that share prices can fall below a shareholder’s purchase price because of macroeconomic or company-specific factors. A positive result over one chosen window does not establish that a stock will continue to rise, and a past decline does not establish what happens next.

Measure liquidity using several signals

Liquidity is about how readily shares can be traded, not just how many changed hands on a busy day. For each company, examine trading activity across the same period and look at more than share count. The NGX X-DataPortal describes historical equity fields including traded volume and number of trades, along with price fields. NGX’s Data Library also identifies resources such as the Daily Official List (Equities) and Daily Summary.

Read volume and trade count together

Traded volume is the number of shares traded during an observation period. Number of trades is the count of transactions. Consider both over a defined window, such as daily observations aggregated across your chosen comparison period. A large volume concentrated in one session can tell a different story from activity spread across many sessions; the count of trades adds context to the share total.

Volume alone does not show the price at which you could execute a particular order. Nor does one high-volume day guarantee that a future order can be completed at a desired price. The exchange describes its market as combining quote-driven and order-driven transactions; that market structure does not remove execution or price risk.

Add value traded and turnover where available

Value traded puts a monetary measure alongside share volume: it captures the value of the shares traded over the stated period. Turnover can provide another view of activity, but be precise about the definition and denominator used. If you calculate a turnover ratio, state the period and the market-value or share-count basis you used. Do not compare a turnover figure calculated one way for one company with a different measure for another.

Use company-level data for a company-level liquidity comparison. NGX Group reported ₦5.96 trillion in year-to-date equities turnover for 2025, but that is a market-wide statistic, not evidence that any particular share is liquid. Similarly, an exchange-wide total cannot show the trading activity in an individual security.

Make the observation window visible

Report the dates covered and whether your volume, trade-count, value-traded, or turnover figures are daily, period totals, or averages. A period total can favor a stock simply because the observation window contains more sessions. Where possible, use a consistent daily basis and describe how you aggregated it. If the data available for one company does not cover the same period as the others, flag that difference rather than treating the figures as directly comparable.

Also look at the pattern behind an average. A period average can conceal a burst of activity on one date and quieter trading on others. Daily Official Lists and Daily Summaries are among the NGX Data Library resources that can help readers inspect market activity at the observation level. The X-DataPortal fields can provide volume and trade count alongside price observations. These are source options, not a guarantee that every desired company-level measure is available in a single report or on the same access terms.

Use valuation ratios as context, not verdicts

A valuation ratio relates a share price to some measure of company performance. NGX’s Data Library lists a PE Ratio resource, and the NGX X-Factbook describes five-year financial performance for listed companies. These resources can help you locate information, but the existence of a ratio or historical record does not by itself prove that a share is cheap, expensive, or suitable for a particular investor.

Understand what a price-to-earnings ratio compares

The price-to-earnings ratio, commonly written as P/E or PE, relates a share price to earnings per share (EPS). In a basic calculation:

PE ratio = share price ÷ earnings per share

The ratio is only interpretable when you know the earnings period and financial information used for EPS. A multiple based on one earnings period should not be compared without qualification to a multiple based on another. Record whether earnings are from an annual or interim period and which company financial statement or data source supplies the figure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A PE figure should not be treated as a standalone ranking. A comparison needs consistent inputs and context about the companies’ reported results. This guide does not establish a single official NGX valuation methodology or current stock-level PE values, so it cannot support a conclusion that a named NGX share is under- or overvalued.

Use company history carefully

The X-Factbook is an annual digital reference that includes company profiles, five-year financial performance, corporate-action history, and market and index information. Historical results can help put a current figure in context, but they are not a substitute for checking the latest applicable financial statements. Confirm the reporting period and whether newer company disclosures have superseded an older figure.

NGX’s Data Library also identifies market resources such as market capitalization and shares outstanding. These can help you understand a company’s scale and the context around a price or trading statistic. They do not independently settle whether a share is fairly valued.

When two companies have different financial reporting dates or the available earnings information is not equally current, a neat-looking ratio comparison may still be misleading. Put the EPS period beside the ratio, note the share-price date, and explain any timing gap. A listed PE Ratio resource may make a figure easier to locate, but you should still verify what earnings period and inputs it represents before relying on it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check disclosures and listing information before relying on the comparison

A calculation is only as useful as the information behind it. Before relying on an old price, return, liquidity, or valuation comparison, review the company’s latest applicable filings and relevant corporate actions. NGX’s X-Compliance material covers released financials, delayed or delinquent filings, free-float deficiencies, listing-rule breaches, enforcement actions, and delisting-related information.

Use those disclosures to identify whether the companies have comparable, timely information available. A delayed filing, a relevant corporate action, or a compliance matter may change how you interpret a historical figure. Record the disclosure date and the reporting period, so a reader can see whether two companies’ figures refer to comparable timeframes.

Historical data access has limits and terms. NGX’s X-DataPortal describes seven days of historical price data as free, with other reports and data available for access or purchase. NGX also says end-of-day historical quotes may be requested as far back as 1996 for a fee, and tick data may be requested for a period of three months. Product scope, access, and terms may change; check NGX’s current service details before relying on a specific access route.

For longer-term context, the NGX X-Factbook is a digital annual reference with company profiles, five-year financial performance, corporate-action history, and market and index information. Its page displays modular subscription prices; confirm current offers and coverage directly with NGX because the page terms may change. It is a possible information resource, not a requirement for a basic comparison, and the available information does not establish an affiliate or referral arrangement. NGX’s Data Library also lists an Indices Report, Daily Official List (Equities), Daily Summary, gainers list, market capitalization, and shares outstanding. Together, these resources indicate possible routes to market and company information, but check the definitions, dates, and access terms for the particular item you use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NGX says end-of-day historical quotes may be requested back to 1996 for a fee, while tick data may be requested for a three-month period. These are different data products and should not be conflated: an end-of-day series supports date-based historical comparisons, while tick data concerns more granular observations. A reader comparing longer-period returns may not need tick data, whereas someone examining intraday trading would need to establish whether that product is suitable and what its current terms are.

Keep market-wide performance separate from stock-level results

Market context can help explain the period you are examining, but an index or market statistic is not a proxy for any individual company. Nigerian Exchange Group reported that the NGX All-Share Index rose 51.19% during 2025, ending at 155,613 points compared with 102,926 at the start of the year. It also reported ₦99.38 trillion in equity market capitalization at year-end 2025.

Those are exchange-wide 2025 figures. They are not a return, valuation, or liquidity measure for a particular share, nor do they imply that every NGX-listed company rose by the same amount. Keep such context in a separate part of your analysis from company-specific calculations. Nigerian Exchange Group’s 2026 report also recorded ₦5.96 trillion in year-to-date equities turnover for 2025; that figure describes the market-wide turnover, not the liquidity of one stock.

A practical workflow for comparing two or more NGX shares

  1. Define the question and period. Choose the companies and identical start and end dates. Decide whether you want price-only return or a measure that includes dividends.
  2. Collect comparable price observations. Use the same price basis and source where possible. Record whether historical prices account for corporate actions.
  3. Calculate and label returns. Apply the price-return formula consistently. If including dividends, document the payment treatment and whether the method assumes reinvestment.
  4. Compare trading activity. For the same period, review traded volume and trade count, then add value traded or turnover if reliable company-level figures are available. State the basis and aggregation.
  5. Check valuation inputs. If using PE, note the share price date, EPS figure, earnings period, and source. Do not compare ratios whose underlying earnings periods or methods differ without explaining the mismatch.
  6. Review disclosures and corporate actions. Check the latest relevant filings, compliance information, and corporate-action history before treating an older figure as current.
  7. Separate evidence from judgment. Present the measures and their limits. Do not turn a favorable return, busier trading, or a lower ratio into an automatic buy or sell conclusion.

For a quick audit, read your comparison across rather than down: confirm that each company uses the same start and end dates; that price return and dividend-inclusive return are not mixed; that trading measures cover the same observation window; and that the earnings periods behind PE inputs are identified. Then read down each company’s column to check for gaps in filings or corporate-action information. This simple presentation helps distinguish a missing or incomparable data point from a genuinely different result.

Common comparison mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing periods: applying different start or end dates can make the apparent winner a product of the selected window.
  • Calling price change “total return”: unless dividends are included and the treatment is stated, the figure is price-only.
  • Equating volume with easy execution: past trading activity does not guarantee an order can be filled at a chosen price.
  • Using a market-wide statistic for a company: index performance and total exchange turnover do not describe an individual share.
  • Comparing PE ratios without checking earnings: the reporting period and EPS basis are part of the comparison, not a footnote.
  • Relying on stale filings or unadjusted prices: newer disclosures or corporate actions can affect how historical figures should be read.
  • Ranking by one measure: returns, liquidity, valuation, and disclosure status answer different questions. None is a complete decision rule on its own.
  • Assuming every data source has identical coverage: a report may identify a metric without providing every company value, date, or definition you need. Verify the exact data and terms before combining figures.
  • Treating a market rally as a stock-level forecast: the All-Share Index’s 2025 gain describes the broad market measure, not each listed company or what any share will do next.

What this method can—and cannot—tell you

A consistent comparison can show how selected NGX shares performed over a chosen period, how much trading activity was recorded, and what valuation indicators look like relative to identified financial information. It can also reveal when the data are not comparable or when further disclosure checks are necessary.

It cannot establish a universal stock score, supply live company figures without current data, or determine whether a share fits a particular person’s circumstances. NGX stock comparisons require a defined stock universe, dated company-level data, relevant financial reporting periods, and an explicit return method. Treat the result as an organized view of evidence rather than a forecast.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I compare NGX stocks by returns, liquidity, and valuation?

Use the same start and end dates for each share, label price-only return separately from any dividend-inclusive measure, and compare trading volume, trade count, and value traded or turnover over the same period. For valuation, identify the share-price date and the earnings period and source behind EPS or any PE ratio. Check relevant company disclosures and corporate actions before drawing conclusions.

Does a share-price increase show an investor’s total return?

Not by itself. A price return records only the change between the starting and ending prices. To include dividends, identify eligible payments during the period and state whether you add cash dividends or assume they were reinvested.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does high trading volume mean I can sell at my preferred price?

No. Past volume and trade count describe recorded activity, not a guarantee that a future order will execute at a chosen price. Consider activity across a period and remember that NGX’s quote-driven and order-driven market structure does not remove execution or price risk.

What NGX sources can help me find historical share information?

NGX identifies historical equity fields through X-DataPortal, including volume, number of trades, and price observations. Its Data Library lists resources such as Daily Official Lists (Equities), Daily Summary, PE Ratio, market capitalization, and shares outstanding. NGX says seven days of historical price data on X-DataPortal are free; other data may require access or purchase. End-of-day historical quotes may be requested as far back as 1996 for a fee, and tick data may be requested for a three-month period. Confirm current availability and terms with NGX.

Can I use the 2025 NGX All-Share Index return as the return for a particular company?

No. Nigerian Exchange Group reported the All-Share Index rose 51.19% in 2025, from 102,926 points at the start of the year to 155,613 at year-end. That is an index-level result. Individual listed companies can have different returns, trading activity, and financial results.

Does a lower PE ratio mean an NGX stock is undervalued?

Not on its own. A PE ratio depends on the price and earnings per share used, including the financial reporting period. Compare like-for-like inputs, check the source and latest applicable company filings, and treat the ratio as context rather than a verdict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

To compare NGX shares, keep the dates, return method, and trading window consistent; distinguish price change from dividends; and check the financial period behind each valuation input. Use company-level activity and current disclosures rather than treating market-wide statistics as evidence about one stock. The result is a clearer comparison, not a forecast or a buy-or-sell recommendation.
