To compare new games well, first filter for the genres, platform, and play style you actually want. Then compare estimated playtime on the same basis, check the current price for the same edition and region, and read player reviews in context. Treat age and content ratings as a separate fit check—not as a substitute for deciding whether you will enjoy the game.
Start with the games that fit you
Build a shortlist before comparing prices or review scores. A game’s genre tags can help you discover candidates, but a label does not fully describe its pace, mechanics, or mode of play. Read the listing’s description and features, and confirm that the game supports your platform and preferred way to play.

- Genre and gameplay: Note the genres and the specific mechanics or modes that matter to you.

Compare playtime on the same basis
Playtime estimates are useful for setting expectations, but they are not a promise of how long you will spend in a game. A main-story estimate and a completionist estimate answer different questions, so do not compare one game’s main story with another game’s all-content figure.

Check prices for the same version
Compare the same platform, region, and edition, and note when you checked. Store prices and deals change; a temporary sale is not the same as a regular price. If you compare listings from different regions or editions, the numbers may not describe equivalent purchases.
Cost per hour can offer one narrow perspective: divide the price you would pay by the playtime estimate you chose. Use the result as a signal, not a verdict. Read player reviews separately from critic scores
Player-review sentiment and critic aggregates are different kinds of evidence. Steam review positivity reflects player sentiment, while Metacritic says its Metascore is a weighted summary of critics’ opinions. Check ratings and purchase mechanics when relevant
For a U.S. release, ESRB information can show a rating category, content descriptors, and interactive elements. Look for notices about randomized in-game purchases when displayed, particularly if those mechanics matter to your household or budget. ESRB ratings guide ESRB ratings and interactive elements
ESRB describes its system as voluntary overall, although console manufacturers and some retailers and storefronts require ratings. Use rating information as decision context, then check the specific game listing and platform for the details relevant to your purchase.

Use a comparison table without hiding trade-offs
For a few finalists, a compact table makes differences easier to spot. Fill it with information checked for the same region and platform wherever possible; note the date for time-sensitive prices and review details.

Once the shortlist is filled in, decide which trade-offs matter most. If you have limited time, emphasize the kind of play experience you want and the relevant playtime estimate. If price is your main constraint, compare current equivalent editions and treat cost per hour only as supporting context. If player response matters, consider sentiment alongside review count and date, while keeping critic scores distinct.
