There is no reliable one-line conversion from a mini PC’s integrated GPU to a desktop graphics card. The defensible comparison is a complete system running the same workload at the same resolution, quality settings, driver and feature settings. Record the mini PC’s processor, memory channels and speed, power mode and cooling as well as its GPU. A GPU model name or synthetic score alone cannot establish equivalence.
Why a mini PC GPU does not have a fixed desktop equivalent
An integrated GPU (iGPU) shares the mini PC’s processor package, system memory and cooling budget. Its observed speed can change when the manufacturer changes firmware, sustained power limits, fan behavior or memory configuration. Two computers using the same processor can therefore produce different frame rates.

A desktop graphics card has its own memory, board power and cooler. Those specifications describe the card’s design, but they still do not predict performance in every game or application. The meaningful unit of comparison is the complete tested configuration, not a compute-unit count, advertised peak throughput or a GPU name.

Define the workload before comparing anything
Start with the task you actually care about. Gaming, 3D rendering, video export and machine-learning inference stress different parts of a system, so a score from one category cannot be converted into another.
- Gaming: name the exact game, API if relevant, resolution, preset, texture setting and ray-tracing mode.
- Rendering: identify the application, renderer, scene and output resolution. A GPU renderer and a CPU renderer are different tests.
- Video work: specify the editor, codec, timeline resolution, effects and export format.
- Compute or AI: name the framework, model or workload, precision and batch size. An AI TOPS figure is not a gaming-performance result.
Use several representative workloads rather than one favorite benchmark. Report average frame rate and, when available, 1% lows or frame-time behavior. A high average with severe stutter is not equivalent to a smoother result.
Record identical test conditions
Every number should carry the conditions that produced it. Make a test sheet for both systems with the following fields.
| Field | What to record | Why it changes the conclusion |
|---|---|---|
| Workload | Game or application name, version and built-in or repeatable test scene | Different scenes and software versions can have different GPU and CPU loads. |
| Resolution | For example, 1920×1080, 2560×1440 or 3840×2160 | Pixel count changes the balance between GPU throughput and memory bandwidth. |
| Quality | Preset plus individual texture, shadow and effects settings | “High” and “Ultra” are not standardized between games. |
| Ray tracing | Off, a named ray-tracing preset, or per-effect settings | Ray tracing can alter the ranking dramatically. |
| Upscaling | Native rendering, or the technology and mode used | Upscaled output is not the same workload as native rendering. |
| Frame generation | Off or the specific frame-generation feature | Generated frames affect displayed smoothness and latency differently from rendered frames. |
| Driver and operating system | Graphics-driver version, OS build and game patch | Driver optimizations and regressions can change results. |
| Power and thermals | Plugged-in state, performance mode, fan mode, temperature and whether the run is sustained | A short burst can hide throttling that appears after several minutes. |
Do not compare a mini PC in an aggressive performance mode with a desktop card in a quiet or power-limited mode without labeling the difference. Keep the power adapter connected when that is the system’s expected test condition.
Capture the mini PC configuration, not just its processor name
Use the processor and graphics specification pages from AMD’s processor specifications and graphics specifications to identify the advertised graphics architecture and supported memory types. Treat those tables as an identification step, not as a substitute for measured workload results.

Memory channels and speed
An iGPU uses system RAM as graphics memory. Channel count and memory speed affect the bandwidth available to textures, frame buffers and compute kernels. Record total capacity, whether the modules are matched, channel mode and effective speed.
A concrete example comes from TechRadar’s review of the Minisforum AI X1 Pro-470, published 27 March 2026. The reviewed 32GB configuration shipped with one memory module. The reviewer reported that this single-channel arrangement constrained graphics performance and expected a matched pair to improve GPU-dependent rendering. That observation applies to the tested machine; it does not establish a universal percentage gain for every mini PC. Before buying a matched SODIMM pair or planning a dual-channel memory upgrade, verify the precise system’s supported memory type, speed, capacity and slot layout in its documentation. See the review at TechRadar’s AI X1 Pro-470 review.

Power, cooling and firmware
Record the selected BIOS or vendor performance profile, fan behavior and sustained temperature. An iGPU can lose speed when a small cooler reaches its thermal limit, while a desktop card has a separate cooler and board-power budget. Repeat a benchmark long enough to expose throttling and note whether performance falls between the first and later runs.
Operating-system and driver state
Install the same game or application version on both systems and document driver versions. If a result is from a review, preserve the reviewer’s complete configuration rather than attaching the number to the processor’s GPU label alone.
How to compare benchmark results without creating a false equivalence
Synthetic tests are useful when the benchmark version and settings match, but they are only one signal. They should support, not replace, results from the workloads you intend to run.

| Bosgame BeyondMax M6, Radeon 890M | 3,825 | 8,853 | Results reported by TechRadar for that reviewed mini PC configuration. |
| Bosgame M5 AI, Radeon 8060S | 11,317 | 26,917 | Results reported in the same review coverage, but with substantially different processor and memory hardware. |
TechRadar explicitly calls the M6-versus-M5 AI comparison unfair as a GPU-only test because the processors and memory differ substantially. Keep each score attached to its complete system; do not turn the spread into a desktop-card conversion or claim that one iGPU is universally faster than a class of discrete cards. The source results are documented in TechRadar’s Bosgame BeyondMax M6 review.
The same review includes Mark Pickavance’s sentence: “In some tests, this converts to being 250% faster, and there are discrete video cards that couldn’t compete with the Radeon 8060S.” In context, he is comparing the M5 AI’s Radeon 8060S with the BeyondMax M6’s Radeon 890M, including their different compute units and memory bandwidth. It is not a claim about all discrete video cards.
Likewise, an “86 TOPS” figure mentioned in the AI X1 Pro-470 coverage describes AI performance, not rasterized or ray-traced graphics. Do not use it to infer a gaming equivalent.
Use a desktop graphics card as a reference, not a promise
The GeForce RTX 4060 product page is a concrete reference for how a vendor reports desktop performance. NVIDIA describes one comparison at 1920×1080 and the highest game settings with DLSS Super Resolution Quality Mode and Frame Generation enabled on RTX 40 Series cards. That is feature-assisted output, not native-only rendering. Label it exactly that way when placing it beside a mini PC result.
The page also lists graphics power and required system power for cards in the lineup. Those are desktop board and system requirements; they are not the wattage allocated to an iGPU inside a mini PC. Use them to discuss the practical differences in cooling, power supply and case requirements, not to calculate an equivalence ratio.

| Comparison question | Valid evidence | Invalid shortcut |
|---|---|---|
| How fast is it in a game? | Same game, patch, resolution, quality, ray tracing, upscaling and frame-generation settings. | Matching a GPU model number or comparing unrelated average FPS figures. |
| Can it run a feature? | Support for the required API, codec or rendering feature plus a test in the target application. | Assuming more compute units guarantees support or usable speed. |
| Will it sustain the result? | Long enough runs with power mode, temperature and fan behavior recorded. | Using a short burst score from a cool start. |
| Is it suitable for a small desk? | System power, adapter, dimensions, noise and upgrade options. | Comparing only frame rate while ignoring the desktop card’s separate board and cooling requirements. |
A repeatable comparison procedure
- Choose the decision workload. Select the games or applications the buyer will actually use, and choose at least three that represent different engines or tasks.
- Freeze software versions. Install the same game patch, benchmark version, operating-system build where practical and documented graphics-driver versions.
- Set equal output conditions. Match resolution and quality settings. Set ray tracing, upscaling and frame generation explicitly rather than leaving a vendor default undisclosed.
- Prepare each mini PC. Connect its expected power supply, select a named performance profile, close background downloads and allow the system to reach its normal operating temperature.
- Verify memory. Record module count, channel mode, capacity and speed. If testing an upgrade, run the same workload before and after without changing other variables.
- Run repeated passes. Use a repeatable in-game sequence or built-in benchmark. Discard obvious setup errors, then report the average and any supplied 1% lows or frame-time observations.
- Check sustained behavior. Repeat or loop the workload long enough to reveal thermal or power throttling. Record temperature and whether later runs are slower.
- Test the desktop reference separately. Match the conditions, but keep its board power, driver and feature support visible. Never merge a vendor’s DLSS or frame-generation result into a native-rendering chart.
- Publish the configuration with every result. Include the exact mini PC model, processor, RAM arrangement, power mode, driver, operating system, benchmark version and settings.
Three practical ways to improve or extend mini PC graphics
| Path | When it makes sense | What to verify | Evidence and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Use the integrated GPU as configured | You value the smallest, simplest system and accept its thermal and memory limits. | Real workload results at the target resolution; sustained temperatures and noise. | Performance is system-specific and cannot be assigned a universal desktop equivalent. |
| Install a matched memory pair | The mini PC has upgradeable slots and is running single-channel memory. | Supported SODIMM type, speed, capacity, slot layout and firmware behavior. | The AI X1 Pro-470 review identifies a single-module constraint in its 32GB test unit; it does not promise a fixed gain for every model. |
| Add an external GPU | You need more graphics performance but want to retain the mini PC. | A supported OCuLink, USB4 or Thunderbolt connection, enclosure or dock, power supply, driver support and total cost. | The AI X1 Pro-470 review identifies OCuLink expansion on that model. Compatibility and performance are not universal. |
Memory upgrades
Use a matched pair only after checking the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact mini PC. Mixing capacities or unsupported speeds can leave the system in a partial-channel mode or cause instability. After installation, confirm the operating system reports the expected capacity and channel mode, then repeat the original workload under the same power and temperature conditions.
OCuLink and other eGPU connections
An OCuLink eGPU dock or an external GPU enclosure for a compatible mini PC can provide a path to a discrete card. The connection, enclosure and card add cost, power draw, desk space and possible noise. The reviewed AI X1 Pro-470 is one documented OCuLink example at TechRadar; do not assume that another mini PC’s similarly shaped connector supports external graphics. Confirm the port’s specification, firmware support and the enclosure’s power requirements before purchasing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them
Calling a GPU “equivalent” from one score
Problem: A synthetic score is mapped directly to a desktop model. Correction: Use the score only alongside matched game or application tests and retain the complete system configuration.
Mixing native and generated frames
Problem: A desktop result with upscaling or frame generation is compared with native iGPU rendering. Correction: Put feature-assisted and native results in separate rows, naming the mode and resolution in each row.
Ignoring single-channel memory
Problem: A review sample’s slow result is blamed entirely on its processor GPU. Correction: Check module count and channel mode first; a single module can constrain an iGPU, as reported for the AI X1 Pro-470 test configuration.

Comparing unlike processors and power limits
Problem: Two mini PCs are treated as a GPU-only contest even though their CPUs, cooling and memory differ. Correction: Describe the result as a system comparison and avoid percentage claims about the GPU architecture.
Using AI specifications as graphics specifications
Problem: TOPS or an NPU claim is presented as gaming speed. Correction: Keep AI inference measurements separate from raster, ray-tracing and video workloads.
Assuming an eGPU port guarantees desktop performance
Problem: A port label is treated as proof that any dock and card will work at full speed. Correction: Verify external-graphics support, link bandwidth, firmware, enclosure power and the particular card, then benchmark the assembled system.

How to present the result to a buyer
Lead with the workload and conditions, not a model-to-model slogan. A useful result sentence names the system, memory configuration, resolution, quality, rendering features and measured outcome. For example: “This mini PC’s reviewed configuration produced the cited Time Spy and Fire Strike scores; the comparison system used a different processor and memory arrangement, so the figures are not a controlled GPU-only test.”
Separate three decisions that readers often merge:
- Capability: whether the software, API, codec or game feature is supported.
- Performance: how fast the complete system renders the chosen workload under stated conditions.
- Practicality: whether power, cooling, noise, size, upgradeability and total system cost fit the buyer’s needs.
Prices and availability vary by region and date and are not established by the cited measurements, so do not use an old review price as a current cost comparison. Drivers, firmware, memory and power settings can also change later results; date-stamp your test and preserve the settings so another reader can reproduce it.
The decision rule
If a reader asks, “What desktop GPU is a mini PC GPU equivalent to?”, the accurate answer is conditional: name the workload, match the test conditions, and compare complete configurations. If the mini PC is single-channel, correcting the memory configuration may be the most efficient first step. If it has verified OCuLink, an external GPU is an expansion option, but it must be tested as its own system. When a desktop reference is shown, keep native rendering distinct from upscaling and frame generation and never turn one vendor result into a universal equivalence claim.
