MCX gold is a benchmark, not the final price of a jewellery item. To compare it with a jeweller’s quote, record both prices at the same time, convert them to the same weight unit, adjust for purity, multiply by the jewellery’s net gold weight, then add disclosed making and other charges and apply 3% GST to the total transaction value.
What the MCX gold price actually represents
The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) price is an exchange-traded reference for gold in India. MCX describes its one-kilogram gold contract as an Indian benchmark, with deliverable quality of 995 fineness. A quote may refer to a futures contract for a particular expiry month, while another website may show a spot or physical-market reference. Those are not automatically interchangeable.

Always identify the contract or instrument before comparing numbers. Contract details can differ by delivery period, so check the current exchange specification instead of assuming that every number labelled “MCX gold” describes the same product. A futures price is also not a promise that a jeweller will use that exact number on an invoice.
A jewellery invoice sits later in the supply chain. It reflects the metal value, the item’s purity and net weight, the jeweller’s making charge, stones or other non-gold components, discounts, taxes, and the seller’s commercial terms. The difference between an MCX quote and a retail bill is therefore not, by itself, evidence that either price is wrong.

Collect comparable numbers before doing any calculation
Record the date, time and type of quote
Write down the exact time of the MCX number and the time printed or stated by the jeweller. Gold prices can move during the day. Also record whether the figure is:
- an MCX futures price, including the contract month or expiry;
- a physical-market or bullion reference rate; or
- a jeweller’s own selling rate.
Do not compare yesterday’s jeweller rate with today’s exchange quote and then attribute the entire difference to making charges. A timestamped, itemised quotation is more useful than a generic “today’s rate” message with no time or instrument identified.
Save a screenshot, printed estimate or invoice draft showing the time and rate. If a seller revises the price before billing, retain both versions and ask which timestamp governs the transaction. This is especially important when you are comparing two shops on different days.
Put both prices on the same weight basis
Use one unit throughout the calculation, normally rupees per gram or rupees per 10 grams. A one-kilogram MCX quote must be divided by 1,000 to obtain a per-gram figure. A per-10-gram jewellery rate must be divided by 10. Never place a per-kilogram number beside a per-gram number and treat the apparent difference as a premium.
Keep the unit visible in your notes, for example ₹X per gram or ₹Y per 10 grams. This simple label prevents a thousand-fold arithmetic error. If a seller quotes a lump sum, divide the gold component by the stated net gold weight so that it can be compared with a per-gram benchmark.
Match purity, not just the unit
A 22K ornament should be compared with a 22K rate. A 22K rate cannot be compared directly with an MCX benchmark for 995 fineness without a fineness adjustment.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) lists these recognised gold grades:

| 14K | 585 |
| 18K | 750 |
| 20K | 833 |
| 22K | 916 |
| 23K | 958 |
| 24KS | 995 |
Purity is expressed as parts of gold per 1,000 parts of alloy. Thus, 916 gold contains approximately 91.6% gold by fineness, while 995 contains approximately 99.5%. The hallmark grade on the piece and the purity printed on the invoice should agree.
Calculate the comparable metal value
Once the units and purity are aligned, calculate only the gold component first. Use this structure:
Gold value = net gold weight × comparable gold rate per gram
“Net gold weight” means the weight of gold used for the item, not automatically the gross weight printed on a display tag. Stones, beads, enamel, springs, clasps made from another material, and other non-gold components may need to be excluded. Ask the seller to state gross weight, stone or non-gold weight where relevant, and net gold weight separately.

For example, a 10-gram necklace with 2 grams of stones is not valued as 10 grams of gold. If the comparable 22K rate is ₹6,000 per gram, the metal line based on 8 grams is ₹48,000 before making, other charges and GST. The calculation should use the seller’s documented net weight, not an estimate based on the display tag.

Adjust a 995 benchmark to another fineness
If your starting rate is for 995 fineness and the item is 916, a consistent comparison can use:
Target-purity rate = 995 rate × 916 ÷ 995
For an illustrative 995 rate of ₹6,000 per gram, the 916-equivalent rate is approximately ₹5,524 per gram after rounding. The same logic applies to another grade: multiply the benchmark by the target fineness and divide by the benchmark fineness. This is a comparison method, not a promise that every jeweller calculates its selling rate in precisely this way. A seller may use a published 22K rate, a daily association rate, or a commercial rate that already incorporates other factors.
Do not apply the ratio twice. If the jeweller has already supplied a 22K rate, use that rate directly and record that it is already purity-matched. Use the adjustment only when the benchmark and the item’s fineness genuinely differ.

- Identify the quote and its timestamp.
- Convert the quote to a common weight unit.
- Align the purity or make a documented fineness adjustment.
- Multiply the comparable rate by net gold weight.
- Add making, stone and other disclosed charges.
- Subtract any stated discount under its stated conditions.
- Apply the consumer GST treatment.
- Compare the complete invoice and product terms with another itemised quote.
Ask for an itemised quotation
The quote should show, at minimum:
- purity and hallmark information;
- net gold weight;
- rate per gram and the rate’s timestamp;
- making charges and how they are calculated;
- stone, gemstone or other non-gold charges;
- any discount or promotional adjustment; and
- the tax-inclusive total.
Also ask whether making is a fixed rupee amount or a percentage of the gold value, and whether the quoted rate is locked only after an advance payment. These are commercial terms that can change the final bill even when two shops display the same metal rate. Have the seller write the assumptions on the estimate rather than relying on a verbal explanation.
India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA) states that its indicative jewellery selling rates are “without 3% GST and Making Charges.” An IBJA figure is therefore a useful reference, but it is not an all-in amount payable for a finished ornament. Treat it as a metal-rate reference and add the item-specific charges shown on the seller’s estimate.
Apply GST to the consumer transaction
The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) states in its sectoral FAQ: “GST is payable at the rate of 3% of the total transaction value of jewellery, whether the making charge is shown separately or not.” Calculate the tax on the transaction value covered by the invoice, rather than assuming that only the bare gold line attracts GST.
CBIC’s separate 5% discussion concerns job-work charges in the job-work context. It should not be converted into a separate 5% consumer tax on jewellery making charges. Check that the invoice’s tax line and total are consistent with the consumer transaction rule.

The following figures are hypothetical and demonstrate the method; they are not current market rates.
| Line item | Illustrative amount |
|---|---|
| Comparable 22K rate | ₹6,000 per gram |
| Net gold weight | 8 grams |
| Gold value | 8 × ₹6,000 = ₹48,000 |
| Making charge | ₹4,800 |
| Stone and other disclosed charges | ₹1,200 |
| Transaction value before GST | ₹54,000 |
| GST at 3% | ₹1,620 |
| Illustrative payable total | ₹55,620 |
If the tag instead showed 10 grams gross weight but included 2 grams of stones, using 10 grams as the gold weight would overstate the metal value. The seller must explain how the net figure was obtained. If a discount applies, show it as its own line and confirm whether GST is calculated on the discounted transaction value shown on the invoice.
Why MCX, bullion references and jewellery bills differ
These prices describe different points in the market. The World Gold Council identifies exchange rates, local taxes, import restrictions and seasonal factors as contributors to Indian gold premiums or discounts. Its methodology relates an MCX spot price, an RBI-published USD/INR rate, an LBMA price and import tax when assessing the domestic relationship.
Retail prices can also reflect a jeweller’s inventory cost, local supply and demand, financing, design complexity, wastage assumptions, and the seller’s quoting practice. A displayed per-gram rate may be lower while the finished bill is higher because of making, stone or service charges. Conversely, a discount may reduce a high displayed rate.

There is no dependable single percentage that explains every gap. A domestic premium or discount can change when currency rates, taxes, import rules or seasonal demand change. Local supply conditions may make two shops in the same city quote differently, even on the same day. Compare the complete, timestamped offer rather than applying a fixed premium formula.

Compare jewellers on the whole transaction
Use the same product specification when comparing sellers. A lower rate for a lighter item, a different purity, or a design with more stone weight is not a like-for-like saving.
| Comparison point | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Quote time | Date and exact time | Gold prices change during the day. |
| Reference type | MCX futures, physical reference or shop rate | Different instruments can represent different points in the price chain. |
| Unit | Per gram, 10 grams or kilogram | Prevents scale errors. |
| Purity | Hallmark grade such as 916 or 750 | Fineness determines the comparable metal content. |
| Net gold weight | Gold weight after excluding non-gold parts | Gross weight alone can exaggerate gold value. |
| Making charge | Amount and calculation method | Design and workmanship costs vary by item. |
| Stone or non-gold charge | Separate weight and price | These materials are not valued like gold. |
| Discount | Amount and conditions | A headline rate may not reflect the final concession. |
| Tax | GST and invoice total | Compare the amount actually payable. |
| After-sale terms | Return, exchange and buyback rules | A lower purchase price may have less favourable exit terms. |
Ask both sellers to price the same specification: identical purity, approximate net weight, stone type, design and delivery date. If the item is made to order, ask whether the final weight can change and how any increase or decrease will be repriced. Compare the written final total, not just the initial estimate.
No single nationwide “fair” making-charge percentage is established by the cited sources. Treat any universal percentage claim cautiously and compare the actual charge for the same design and specification.
Verify the hallmark before relying on the purity claim
BIS defines hallmarking as “the accurate determination and official recording of the proportionate content of precious metal in precious metal articles.” A hallmark provides third-party assurance about the fineness represented on the item, which is important when comparing the rate paid with the gold content received.
BIS consumer guidance says a jeweller should have a magnifying glass with at least 10× magnification available to show the hallmark. A loupe can help you see a small mark, but visual inspection alone does not authenticate an item or replace official BIS verification guidance.
Before paying, ask the jeweller to show the hallmark and explain the fineness code. Check that the invoice records the same purity and that the quoted rate corresponds to that grade. If the invoice, tag and hallmark use different descriptions, stop the comparison until the discrepancy is explained in writing. Keep the invoice and hallmark details with your purchase records for any later exchange or buyback discussion.

- net gold weight;
- gold value;

Only after both rows are complete should you calculate the difference. Express it as a rupee amount and, if useful, as a percentage of the comparable gold value. Do not describe the result as a national premium or a universal fair rate: it applies only to the timestamped quotes and items you documented.
A simple spreadsheet can include separate columns for the original unit, converted per-gram rate, fineness, net weight, gold value, charges, discount, GST and final total. Keep the original figures alongside the converted figures so another person can reproduce the calculation and spot a mistaken unit or purity entry.

What can and cannot be concluded from the comparison
You can determine whether a particular jewellery quote is internally consistent with a benchmark after normalising unit and purity. You can also identify how much of the final bill comes from gold, making, non-gold components and GST.
You cannot infer a current nationwide import duty, a universal making-charge percentage, or a guaranteed resale value from the MCX number alone. No same-day MCX quote, IBJA rate or local store quote is fixed in this guide; those figures are volatile or seller-specific and must be captured when you request the price.
The sound comparison is therefore not “MCX versus jeweller” as two competing prices. It is a documented chain: timestamped benchmark, matching fineness, net metal weight, itemised retail charges, consumer GST and comparable after-sale terms.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is MCX gold the price I should pay for jewellery?
No. MCX is an exchange-traded benchmark, including a 995-fineness one-kilogram contract. A jewellery bill adds the item’s net gold value, making and other charges, discounts, and consumer GST. Use MCX to assess the metal component, not as the finished retail price.
How do I convert an MCX kilogram quote to a jewellery rate?
Divide the kilogram quote by 1,000 to obtain rupees per gram. Then match the item’s purity. For a 995 benchmark and 916 jewellery, multiply the per-gram benchmark by 916 and divide by 995 before multiplying by the item’s net gold weight.
Should I use gross weight or net gold weight?
Use net gold weight. Gross weight can include stones, beads, enamel and other non-gold components. Ask the seller to show gross weight, non-gold weight and net gold weight separately on the estimate or invoice.
What GST rate applies when I buy consumer jewellery?
CBIC states that GST is 3% of the total transaction value of jewellery, whether making charges are shown separately or not. The separate 5% job-work discussion is not an automatic 5% consumer tax on jewellery making charges.
Why is my jeweller’s rate different from MCX?
They represent different points in the price chain. Exchange rates, local taxes, import restrictions and seasonal factors can affect domestic premiums or discounts. The jeweller’s inventory, local demand, design, making charges, stone costs, discount and tax also affect the final invoice.
Does an IBJA jewellery rate include GST and making charges?
IBJA states that its indicative jewellery selling rates are without 3% GST and making charges. Treat the figure as a reference, then add the item-specific charges and consumer GST shown on the seller’s invoice.
How can I check that the purity used in the comparison is genuine?
Ask the jeweller to show the BIS hallmark with a magnifying glass of at least 10× magnification, compare the fineness code with the invoice, and use BIS’s official verification guidance where available. A loupe helps you see a mark but does not authenticate purity by itself.
Is there a standard fair making-charge percentage?
The cited official material does not establish one nationwide percentage. Making charges vary by design and seller. Compare the rupee charge and calculation method for the same item specification, along with the final tax-inclusive total and after-sale terms.
The Bottom Line
Compare MCX and jewellery prices only after matching the timestamp, instrument, unit and fineness. Multiply the comparable rate by net gold weight, add documented making and non-gold charges, apply 3% GST to the consumer transaction value, and judge the final invoice and after-sale terms—not the displayed per-gram rate alone.
