Compare IT services companies by matching the reporting period and growth basis first, then assess revenue, bookings, operating margins, and guidance as separate measures. Revenue shows work recognized during a period; bookings indicate new business under each company’s own definition. Neither a strong bookings figure nor a high adjusted margin is meaningful without checking what it includes and how it is reported.
Start with comparable reporting periods and growth bases
Before comparing headline results, align the fiscal period, currency, and growth measure. A company’s fiscal year may not match another’s calendar year, and reported-currency growth can differ from constant-currency growth because of foreign-exchange movements.

Also separate organic growth from growth that includes acquisitions. Cognizant said its Belcan acquisition contributed approximately 260 basis points to its 2025 revenue growth. That contribution is useful context, but it is not an organic-growth rate: use the company’s explicitly stated organic measure when available, and identify acquisition effects separately when they are disclosed.

- Compare reported-currency growth with reported-currency growth, and constant-currency with constant-currency.
- Check whether the stated rate includes acquisitions or divestitures; do not label it organic unless the company defines it that way.
Revenue growth: what the company recognized
Revenue is the amount recognized over a reporting period. It is the best starting point for comparing the scale and realized growth of businesses, but the rate still needs its basis attached: fiscal period, currency, and organic or acquisition-supported status.
#1 Best Overall
For example, Accenture’s FY2026 SEC-filed results reported revenue of $74.18 billion, up 6% in U.S. dollars and 5% in local currency. Those are two different, valid growth measures for the same fiscal year; they should not be directly compared with a peer’s constant-currency rate as though the basis matched. Accenture’s fiscal year also differs from Cognizant’s calendar-year reporting in the examples here.
Bookings vs. revenue: read demand without treating it as sales
Bookings generally describe new business, but each company defines and presents them in its own way. Accenture’s FY2025 annual report cautions: “Information regarding our new bookings is not comparable to, nor should it be substituted for, an analysis of our revenues over time.” Treat bookings as a demand indicator, not recognized revenue or a direct forecast of near-term sales.
Contract composition affects when booked work may become revenue. Accenture says managed-services bookings, typically multi-year contracts, generally convert over a longer period than consulting bookings. Delivery schedules, renewals, delays, and cancellations can also affect conversion. Do not infer a uniform timetable from a bookings total.

What to check in a bookings disclosure
- The company’s definition and the time window covered.
- Whether the figure is quarterly, annual, or trailing twelve months.
- Any large-deal threshold or concentration information, if disclosed.
- Whether cancellations or other changes to booked work are reported.
- The mix of consulting and managed-services work, where the company provides it.
Cognizant reported $28.4 billion in trailing-twelve-month bookings for 2025, up 5% year over year; fourth-quarter bookings rose 9% year over year. These are company-reported demand measures for their stated periods, not substitutes for the company’s revenue growth.
Rank #3
What does book-to-bill mean?
Book-to-bill compares bookings with revenue over a specified period, but confirm the company’s calculation and time window before comparing values. A ratio above 1x can indicate bookings exceeded revenue under that calculation; it does not establish how quickly the work will be delivered or recognized.
Cognizant reported approximately 1.3x book-to-bill on a trailing-twelve-month basis for 2025. Read that alongside its bookings definition and contract mix, rather than as a stand-alone promise of future revenue.
How to compare operating margins
Compare GAAP operating margin with GAAP operating margin, and adjusted margin with adjusted margin only after reviewing the company’s definition and adjustments. Accenture’s SEC exhibit defines GAAP operating margin as operating income divided by revenue. Adjusted operating margin is a non-GAAP measure; adjustments and calculation practices can differ between companies.

How to compare company guidance
Guidance is a dated range for a specified future period and measure, not a promise. Record the original range when issued, including its date, fiscal period, currency basis, and whether it concerns revenue, earnings, or another measure. If the company later revises guidance, keep the revised range separate from the original one; compare reported actuals with the applicable range on the same basis.
Cognizant’s initial FY2026 revenue-growth guidance was 4.0% to 6.5% on a constant-currency basis. Accenture’s FY2026 results reported 5% local-currency revenue growth, above its guided range of 3% to 4% local-currency growth. The matched currency basis makes that actual-versus-guidance comparison interpretable; it does not make Accenture and Cognizant direct peers for a single-period ranking, given their different fiscal calendars and measures.
For its own actual-versus-guidance comparisons, Infosys provides a tool comparing actual revenue and EPS against issued guidance: Infosys quarterly results.

A practical comparison checklist
- Align periods: Write down each fiscal year or quarter and its end date.
- Normalize growth: Compare the same currency basis and separate disclosed acquisition contributions from organic growth.
- Use revenue for realized performance: Keep bookings separate, and note the company’s definition and time period.
- Interpret book-to-bill cautiously: Confirm the formula and window, then consider deal duration and service mix.
- Keep margin measures distinct: Compare GAAP to GAAP and adjusted to adjusted only after checking definitions.
- Evaluate guidance against actuals: Preserve the initial and revised ranges separately and match the period and currency basis.
Company overviews can provide context, but detailed performance comparisons are better grounded in filings and period-specific investor materials. Accenture’s investor-relations overview describes approximately 9,000 clients and approximately $74 billion of FY2026 revenue; use such overview figures as context rather than as a replacement for its detailed results.
These operating metrics help describe business performance; by themselves, they do not determine valuation, investment suitability, or future returns.
