The reliable way to compare an iPhone sold in different countries is to compare the identical model, storage capacity, condition and seller type, then separate the listed price from tax, currency conversion, payment fees, refunds and import costs. A converted sticker price can identify a promising market, but it is not your final cost until checkout tax, your card’s exchange rate, possible refund eligibility and the rules for bringing the phone home are known.
What a valid international iPhone comparison includes
Start by defining one product precisely. “iPhone 17” or “256GB iPhone” is not enough if one page shows a different model, storage tier or sales channel. Record all of the following before collecting prices:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Generation and model: for example, the exact numbered model and whether it is a Pro, Pro Max, Plus or standard version.
- Storage capacity: compare the same capacity in every market.
- Condition: new, refurbished and used devices are separate comparisons.
- Seller type: Apple-operated store, authorized retailer or independent reseller. A reseller’s price should not be presented as Apple’s official local price.
- Purchase channel: online delivery, store pickup and an in-person purchase can have different tax and export procedures.
Save the product page, local-currency amount and date checked. Prices, tax rules, exchange rates and stock can change, so a comparison without a date is not reproducible.

Does the displayed iPhone price include tax?
There is no universal answer. Tax presentation depends on the country, the store, the buyer’s address and sometimes the delivery or pickup method. Never compare a pre-tax amount from one market directly with a tax-inclusive amount from another.

United States: tax is calculated from the location
Apple’s US online-store guidance says the tax shown during checkout is an estimate based on the shipping address or pickup-store address. The final invoice reflects the final tax and applicable fees. The amount on a product page therefore may not be the amount ultimately charged.
Canada: the shipping address determines local taxes
Apple Canada states that local taxes depend on the shipping address. A Canadian comparison should use the tax shown for the actual destination rather than adding one nationwide percentage to the product-page price.
Saudi Arabia: online prices include VAT
Apple Saudi Arabia explicitly says its online prices include VAT. Treat the displayed amount as tax-inclusive for that channel, while still checking whether delivery, payment or other charges are added at checkout.
United Kingdom: 20% VAT and a restricted online export assumption
Apple’s UK help guidance states that UK orders are subject to 20% VAT. It also says Apple.com UK is not part of the Retail Export Scheme for internet sales. A visitor should not assume that an online UK purchase qualifies for a tourist VAT refund simply because the phone leaves the country.
The 20% figure is time-sensitive; verify the current rate before buying. Local rules and store policies can change.
Build a tax-status record for every country
For each price, write down the tax basis in plain language: tax-inclusive, tax calculated at checkout, or tax basis still uncertain. If the store provides an estimated checkout total for the buyer’s address, use that figure and label it as an estimate. Do not silently add a single national rate when local or regional rates may apply.

| Market or store policy | What the published guidance establishes | How to use it in a comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Apple US online store | Checkout tax is estimated from the shipping or pickup address; the final invoice reflects final taxes and applicable fees. | Use the address-specific checkout estimate or final total, not just the product-page amount. |
| Apple Canada online store | Local taxes depend on the shipping address. | Enter the actual delivery address before comparing with a tax-inclusive market. |
| Apple Saudi Arabia online store | Online prices include VAT. | Treat the listed amount as VAT-inclusive, then check for any separate checkout charges. |
| Apple UK online store | UK orders are subject to 20% VAT; Apple.com UK is not part of the Retail Export Scheme for internet sales. | Include the stated VAT and do not deduct a tourist refund for an online order without separate confirmation that the purchase channel qualifies. |
How to convert iPhone prices between currencies
Choose one reporting currency—such as euros, US dollars or pounds—and convert every local price using one dated reference rate. Keep the original local amount beside the converted result so another reader can reproduce the calculation.

The European Central Bank publishes euro reference rates on working days, generally around 16:00 Central European Time. Its rates are published for information purposes only, and the ECB strongly discourages using them for transactions. They are useful for a consistent editorial comparison, not a promise of what a bank or card network will charge.
For 12 October 2026, the ECB page showed these reference rates:
| Pair expressed against the euro | ECB reference rate on 12 October 2026 |
|---|---|
| EUR/USD | 1.1181 |
| EUR/GBP | 0.84478 |
State the date with the rate. A rate from 12 October 2026 should not be described as today’s rate on a later publication date.
Apply the direction correctly
If a local price is in a currency quoted as units per euro, divide or multiply according to the quote’s direction. Write the formula explicitly rather than relying on a hidden spreadsheet setting:
- Local amount to euros: local amount divided by the quoted units of local currency per euro.
- Euros to local currency: euro amount multiplied by the quoted units of local currency per euro.
Check the result by converting it back. A direction error can make an expensive phone appear artificially cheap.

Show the conversion in a comparison table
A useful working sheet has these columns:
| Country and store | Exact configuration | Local price | Tax basis | Rate and date | Converted amount | Unincluded buyer costs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Country/store name | Generation, model, storage and condition | Amount in local currency | Inclusive, checkout estimate or uncertain | Reference currency, rate and date | Calculated result in the reporting currency | Card fees, refund uncertainty and import costs |
The row labels are a working format, not a substitute for recording the actual store page and date. Keep the local price even after conversion; exchange rates move and the calculation may need to be updated.
Why the ECB conversion is not your card’s final charge
Your card issuer or payment network may use a different rate, apply a spread, add a foreign-currency fee or charge an international-transaction fee. Apple warns that an international-card purchase can fluctuate with exchange rates and may incur issuer conversion charges or fees. Those costs can apply even when the converted sticker price looks favorable.
Before purchasing, check the card’s terms for:
- the network or issuer exchange-rate method;
- a percentage foreign-currency fee;
- a fixed international-transaction charge;
- dynamic currency conversion offered by the merchant or terminal; and
- the date on which the transaction is authorized and later settled.
Use the card’s published terms or a confirmed quote for a final-cost estimate. Label an ECB-based figure as a reference conversion, not as the amount that will appear on the statement.
How to handle a possible VAT refund
A refund is conditional, so subtracting it from every European price creates a misleading result. EU guidance says non-EU residents may be eligible for a VAT refund when the goods and refund documents are presented to customs on departure within three months. The procedure, documentation and deadlines vary by country.
Check the buyer and the route
- Confirm that the buyer’s normal residence meets the non-EU-resident requirement.
- Ask whether the specific seller and purchase channel issue the required refund documents.
- Allow time to present the phone and paperwork to customs at the departure point.
- Check whether the departure occurs within the stated three-month window.
- Read the refund operator’s fees and method; an approved refund may be less than the headline VAT amount.
Apple UK’s statement that Apple.com UK internet sales are outside the Retail Export Scheme is a concrete warning against generalizing from an in-store tourist purchase to an online order. Treat a refund as zero until the buyer’s store, channel, residence and departure process are confirmed.
What import costs can change the result?
The phone may incur charges when it is shipped to, or carried into, the destination country. The exact amount depends on the destination, route, declared value, product classification and the rules in force when the device enters. A universal import figure cannot be stated without the buyer’s origin and destination.

Check the destination authority or carrier for:
- import VAT or sales tax;
- customs duty, if applicable to the device;
- declaration thresholds and passenger allowances;
- required invoices or proof of purchase;
- courier brokerage, handling or storage charges; and
- special rules for a phone that is shipped versus carried by a traveler.
Record these as separate line items. Do not hide them inside the exchange-rate calculation, and do not call the lowest converted price the winner until the destination check is complete.

- Define the target phone. Write the generation, exact model, storage, condition and seller type. Exclude pages that do not match.
- Collect dated local prices. Save each store page, currency, amount and date checked. Distinguish Apple-operated stores from resellers.
- Determine tax treatment. Read the store’s checkout help and enter the relevant shipping or pickup location. Mark the amount inclusive, checkout-calculated or uncertain.
- Choose the reporting currency. Use the same currency for every market and retain the local amounts.
- Choose one dated reference rate. Record the source, rate and date. The ECB’s 12 October 2026 figures are an example of a dated reference snapshot, not a transaction quote.
- Calculate the reference conversion. Apply the correct quote direction and show the formula in your notes.
- Estimate payment costs. Check the card issuer or payment network for its rate, spread and foreign-transaction fees.
- Test refund eligibility. Verify residence, seller, channel, documents and departure deadline. Leave the refund out if any condition is unresolved.
- Check import requirements. Use the destination’s current rules for the actual shipping or travel route, including tax, duty and handling charges.
- State the result with limits. Identify the configuration, stores, date, tax basis, rate and excluded costs. Call it a pre-fee comparison when card or import costs remain unknown.
Worked comparison framework without misleading precision
Suppose three stores list the same configuration in three currencies. Your worksheet should keep the local prices untouched, add a tax-status note, and then calculate a reference conversion on the same date. The converted column answers only: “What would these listed amounts represent at the chosen reference rate?”
A second calculation should add buyer-specific costs:
Estimated landed cost = checkout total + card conversion costs + eligible non-refunded taxes or fees + import charges − confirmed refund.
Use “confirmed refund” only when the buyer has met the applicable conditions. If a value is unknown, leave that component out of the numerical estimate and explain that the result is incomplete rather than inserting a guess.
This two-stage approach prevents a common error: comparing a US product-page amount before local tax with a VAT-inclusive European checkout amount, converting both at a neutral reference rate and then declaring the US price cheaper.

Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them
Comparing different storage tiers
Storage can change the price substantially. Re-run the search for the identical capacity; do not use the nearest available tier as a substitute.
Mixing Apple prices with reseller offers
Seller warranty, condition, included accessories and return rights may differ. Label a reseller clearly and avoid treating its offer as the country’s official Apple price.
Adding one national tax rate by hand
US checkout tax depends on the shipping or pickup location, and Canadian local taxes depend on the shipping address. Use the actual checkout location instead of a nationwide shortcut.

Using an undated exchange rate
Rates move. Record the rate date and source beside every converted figure, and update the table when the purchase date changes.
Calling a reference rate a guaranteed charge
The ECB rate is informational. Your issuer or network can apply a different rate and fees. Check the payment terms before deciding.
Assuming tourists always recover VAT
Eligibility depends on residence, seller, documents, departure and timing. Apple UK’s online-store exclusion shows why purchase channel matters.
Ignoring the trip home
Import VAT, duty, declaration rules and carrier charges can erase a sticker-price advantage. Verify the destination route before buying.
How to present a defensible conclusion
A careful conclusion names the exact phone and seller type, lists the stores checked, gives the date, says whether each displayed amount includes tax, identifies the reference-rate source and date, and separates known costs from unknown ones. If card fees, refund eligibility or import charges have not been established, describe the result as a converted-price comparison rather than the buyer’s final cost.
There is no reliable universal “cheapest country” ranking from a single undated list. Prices, tax treatment, exchange rates and import rules change, and the answer can reverse for a different storage tier, card or destination. The useful output is a dated worksheet that another buyer can audit and update.
Quick Recap
Quick checklist before paying
- Is the generation, model, storage and condition identical?
- Is the seller Apple or a clearly identified reseller?
- Is the listed price tax-inclusive, tax-exclusive or calculated at checkout?
- Did you record the local price and date?
- Did you convert every market with one dated reference rate?
- Did you check your card’s exchange-rate method and fees?
- Do you genuinely qualify for a refund, and does the purchase channel support it?
- Did you verify import tax, duty, declaration and handling costs for your route?
- Are warranty and service implications acceptable for the country of purchase?
- Have you separated confirmed amounts from estimates?
