In the completed-edition series through Hangzhou 2023, India’s largest haul was 107 medals in 2023, while its best rank was second, achieved at New Delhi in 1951.
How to make a fair edition-by-edition comparison
For every completed Games, record the edition year and host, medals by color, their total, and India’s final position in that edition’s medal table. The total is the sum of gold, silver and bronze; rank is a separate result. A larger haul does not automatically mean a higher rank, and a country’s best rank need not come in the edition where it won the most medals.

Use the final edition table from the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) as the authority for that Games. Secondary summaries can contain transcription differences: for Incheon 2014, the OCA table records 37 bronze medals and 57 total, whereas one retrospective gives 36 bronze. Medal allocations may also be revised after an edition; the OCA India profile notes that India’s 2018 mixed 4×400m relay silver was upgraded to gold in 2020 following a competitor’s doping disqualification.
Keep an edition that is still in progress out of a completed-results series. If showing live results, label them as provisional and include the precise date and time they were checked. The Aichi-Nagoya Games are scheduled to conclude on October 4, 2026; include 2026 as a completed edition only if an official final table is available by publication time.

Why total and rank can tell different stories
India’s lowest rank in this series was 11th at Beijing 1990, despite a 23-medal haul. For context, India won 70 medals and ranked eighth at Jakarta–Palembang 2018, and won 65 and ranked sixth at Guangzhou 2010. These results illustrate why a medal count and a table position should not be treated as interchangeable measures.

The table supports a comparison of reported medal counts and final ranks. It does not establish a rate-adjusted performance trend: the cited sources do not provide a consistent denominator across editions for the number of medal events, participating national Olympic committees (NOCs), or India’s event entries. Raw totals therefore cannot, on their own, show how India’s success rate changed over time.
A Press Information Bureau account published in 2023 says India had won 672 Asian Games medals since 1951, but that figure predates the Hangzhou results. Do not present it as a current all-edition sum or simply add Hangzhou’s 107 medals: that would not account for any underlying historical revisions.
