How to Compare IDBI Bank and HDB Financial Services Before Investing

IDBI Bank and HDB Financial Services (HDBFS) should not be compared as if they were two banks. IDBI Bank is an RBI-classified private-sector bank that collects deposits and makes loans. HDBFS is an RBI-registered lending non-banking financial company (NBFC) that funds a loan book mainly through borrowings and other market sources. That difference changes funding costs, liquidity risk, capital rules, margins and the meaning of asset-quality ratios.

A sound comparison uses the same reporting period and same valuation date, then weighs business model, growth, profitability, asset quality, capital, ownership, liquidity and governance. The latest figures available here are IDBI Bank’s quarter ended 31 December 2024 and HDBFS’s financial year ended 31 March 2025. Share prices, market capitalisation and valuation multiples must be refreshed from current exchange filings before you invest.

Start with the structural difference: bank versus NBFC

The first question is not “which has the lower price-to-book ratio?” It is “what kind of financial institution am I buying?” A bank and an NBFC can both lend to consumers and businesses, but their liabilities, liquidity backstops and regulatory obligations differ.

Feature IDBI Bank HDB Financial Services
Regulatory type Bank; classified as private-sector by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) RBI-registered lending NBFC
Primary funding lens Deposits, including current and savings accounts (CASA), plus market borrowings Borrowings and other funding used to finance the loan book; reports assets under management (AUM) and liquidity
Core scale measure Deposits and net advances AUM and disbursements
Key margin question How cheaply can it gather deposits and convert them into earning assets? How cheaply can it borrow, and what spread remains after operating and credit costs?
Liquidity question Deposit stability, CASA mix, liquid assets and regulatory buffers Borrowing maturities, liquidity coverage, unencumbered assets and access to funding markets

Because the denominators and funding systems differ, a bank’s net interest margin, CASA ratio or deposit growth cannot be treated as an NBFC’s spread, borrowing growth or AUM growth. Compare each company against the economics of its own business first, then use carefully selected cross-company measures such as return on equity, capital strength and valuation.

IDBI Bank’s regulatory status and model

IDBI Bank’s official profile says that LIC acquired 51% of its total paid-up equity capital and that the RBI categorised the institution as a “Private Sector Bank” with effect from 21 January 2019. The classification is regulatory; it does not make the bank economically identical to a newer private lender. Its analysis should focus on deposit franchise quality, loan mix, net interest income, non-interest income, operating efficiency and credit costs.

HDBFS’s NBFC model

HDBFS lends without operating as a deposit-taking bank. Its balance sheet therefore needs a different reading: AUM, disbursement growth, borrowing mix, cost of funds, liquidity coverage and asset-liability maturity gaps are central. A rapid AUM increase can be positive only if underwriting, collections and funding remain disciplined.

What the latest reported numbers show

The figures below are not a same-date comparison. IDBI Bank’s data are for its official Q3 FY2025 release, the quarter ended 31 December 2024. HDBFS’s data are for FY2024-25, the year ended 31 March 2025. Keep that timing difference visible in any spreadsheet or investment note.

IDBI Bank: Q3 FY2025 snapshot

Measure Reported value Period and interpretation
Capital adequacy ratio 21.98% Quarter ended 31 December 2024; total regulatory capital relative to risk-weighted assets
CET1 ratio 19.91% Quarter ended 31 December 2024; highest-quality common equity capital buffer
Gross NPA 3.57% Quarter ended 31 December 2024; non-performing assets before provisions
Net NPA 0.18% Quarter ended 31 December 2024; NPAs after provisions and permitted adjustments
Provision coverage ratio 99.47% Quarter ended 31 December 2024; provisions relative to gross NPAs as reported
Deposits ₹2,77,602 crore As at 31 December 2024
Net advances ₹2,00,944 crore As at 31 December 2024

The combination of a 3.57% gross NPA and 0.18% net NPA indicates that provisions absorb most recognised problem assets in that quarter, but it does not eliminate the need to inspect fresh slippages, recoveries, write-offs, restructured loans and credit costs over several quarters.

HDBFS: FY2024-25 snapshot

Measure Reported value Period
Total disbursements ₹66,108 crore FY2024-25
Total revenue ₹16,300 crore FY2024-25
Profit before tax ₹2,928 crore FY2024-25
Profit after tax ₹2,176 crore FY2024-25
AUM ₹1,07,262 crore As reported for FY2024-25
Shareholder funds ₹15,820 crore As reported for FY2024-25

These numbers establish scale and profitability, not investment value by themselves. To judge whether the earnings are durable, trace AUM growth against net interest spread, operating expenses, credit costs, write-offs, stage-3 assets and the cost and tenor of borrowings.

Compare growth and profitability on the right terms

For IDBI Bank

  • Advances and deposits: Review year-on-year and sequential growth, loan mix, deposit renewal behaviour and the CASA proportion. Deposit growth that relies on expensive term deposits can pressure future margins.
  • Net interest income and net interest margin: Separate loan repricing, deposit repricing and investment-book effects. A one-quarter margin improvement may reverse when funding rates or asset yields change.
  • Return on assets and return on equity: Check whether better returns come from sustainable operating profit or from lower provisions that may not persist.
  • Fee income: Examine fees by source and whether they are recurring. One-time gains should not be capitalised into a normal earnings estimate.
  • Cost-to-income ratio: A falling ratio can signal operating leverage, but underinvestment in branches, technology or collections can create later costs.

For HDBFS

  • AUM growth: Track growth by product and customer segment, not only the consolidated percentage. Fast growth in a riskier segment can raise future credit costs.
  • Disbursements: Compare new originations with repayments, prepayments and run-off. Disbursement growth alone does not prove that AUM or earnings will grow.
  • Spreads and cost of funds: Follow the yield on loans, borrowing rates, fixed-versus-floating liabilities and the lag with which lending rates reset.
  • Operating expenses: Branch expansion, employee costs, technology spending and collection infrastructure should be assessed against incremental AUM and revenue.
  • Credit costs and profitability: Analyse provisions, write-offs and recoveries alongside profit before tax and profit after tax. A high reported spread can be overwhelmed by losses.

Use matching fiscal periods. If one company reports a quarter and the other a full year, label the mismatch rather than placing the figures in a misleading side-by-side growth calculation.

Funding, liquidity and interest-rate sensitivity

Funding is often the most important reason a bank and an NBFC deserve different valuation frameworks.

IDBI Bank’s funding questions

  • What proportion of deposits is low-cost CASA, and how has that proportion changed?
  • Are deposits diversified by retail, small business and institutional customers?
  • What is the maturity profile of term deposits and wholesale borrowings?
  • How much of the investment book can be converted to cash without material losses?
  • How would a deposit-rate increase affect the bank’s margin and earnings?

The reported deposit base of ₹2,77,602 crore and net advances of ₹2,00,944 crore at 31 December 2024 provide scale, but they do not reveal funding quality without the deposit mix, liquidity buffer and repricing details.

HDBFS’s funding questions

  • List every major borrowing source, including bank loans, bonds, commercial paper, securitisation or assignment and other facilities disclosed in the latest filing.
  • Map maturities for the next 12, 24 and 36 months against expected collections and undrawn committed lines.
  • Check liquidity coverage, unencumbered assets and the concentration of lenders or investors.
  • Measure the effect of higher market rates on new borrowing and on the spread earned by the loan book.
  • Look for currency, securitisation, collateral and refinancing risks in the notes to the accounts.

An NBFC can be profitable yet vulnerable if it must refinance a large amount of short-term debt while holding longer-duration loans. The relevant comparison with a bank is not “which has more deposits,” but whether each institution can meet obligations under a stressed funding market.

Asset quality: use the definitions, not just the headline ratio

For IDBI Bank, start with gross NPA, net NPA and provision coverage, then examine the trend in fresh slippages, recoveries, upgrades, write-offs, restructured loans and sector concentrations. The Q3 FY2025 figures were gross NPA of 3.57%, net NPA of 0.18% and provision coverage of 99.47%. A high provision coverage ratio is supportive, but it can coexist with new problem loans if slippages are rising.

For HDBFS, track stage-3 assets, overdue buckets, provisions, write-offs, recoveries and restructured accounts by product. HDBFS states, under the RBI directions it cites, that special-mention-account (SMA) ageing is classified as up to 30 days, more than 30 to 60 days, and more than 60 to 90 days. An NPA may be upgraded only after all arrears of interest and principal are paid. This rule makes cure quality important: an account that moves out of NPA status should be checked for complete repayment of overdue amounts, not merely a technical reclassification.

Do not compare a bank’s net NPA directly with an NBFC’s stage-3 ratio without checking accounting definitions, gross-versus-net presentation, write-off policy, securitised assets and the reporting date. Also test a downside case in which delinquencies rise, recoveries slow and provisions increase.

Capital and loss-absorption capacity

IDBI Bank reported a capital adequacy ratio of 21.98% and CET1 of 19.91% at 31 December 2024. Evaluate those buffers against risk-weighted asset growth, dividend policy, planned expansion and the effect of a stressed credit cycle. CET1 is especially useful because it represents common equity available to absorb losses before weaker forms of capital.

For HDBFS, use the applicable NBFC capital ratios, liquidity coverage and borrowing profile disclosed in its latest annual and regulatory filings. Ask whether capital can support the planned AUM increase after provisions, write-offs and dividends. A high ratio today can decline quickly if AUM expands faster than retained earnings or if credit losses rise.

Capital ratios are point-in-time measures. Put at least three to five reporting dates into a trend table and note any capital raising, securitisation, portfolio sale or change in risk weights that affects comparability.

Ownership, IPO structure and governance

IDBI Bank

LIC’s acquisition of 51% of IDBI Bank’s paid-up equity capital led to the RBI’s private-sector-bank categorisation effective 21 January 2019. Review the current shareholding pattern, government or institutional ownership changes, board independence, related-party transactions and the strategic direction communicated in filings. Ownership can influence capital allocation, management continuity and the probability of corporate actions, but it does not replace analysis of returns and risk.

HDBFS and the 2025 IPO

The June 2025 prospectus and red herring prospectus should be read for risk factors, use of proceeds, related-party disclosures, post-issue shareholding and the treatment of existing shareholders. An HDFC Bank filed exhibit described the IPO as a ₹2,500 crore fresh issue plus a ₹10,000 crore offer for sale. The fresh issue raises capital for the company; the offer for sale transfers shares from selling shareholders and does not add that amount to HDBFS’s balance sheet.

After an IPO, also check lock-ins, promoter holding, dilution, employee or anchor allocations where disclosed, and whether the stated use of proceeds has changed. Compare post-listing results with the forecasts and risk disclosures in the prospectus, rather than assuming that a successful listing proves the investment case.

Valuation: build a date-matched comparison

Valuation is meaningful only when price, market capitalisation, book value and earnings all refer to the same date and reporting basis. Useful bank measures

  • Price-to-book (P/B): market price divided by the latest reported book value per share. Interpret it with sustainable ROE, asset quality and capital needs.
  • Price-to-earnings (P/E): use normalised earnings, not a year distorted by unusually low provisions or one-time gains.
  • ROE and ROA: compare with the cost of equity and the bank’s capital requirement.
  • NIM, CASA and credit cost: use them to explain why returns may rise or fall.

Useful NBFC measures

  • P/B and P/E: pair both with AUM growth, sustainable ROE and the capital required to fund expansion.
  • Spread and cost of funds: test sensitivity to refinancing and market-rate changes.
  • Credit cost and stage-3 assets: assess whether reported profit survives a normalised loss cycle.
  • Liquidity and borrowing mix: apply a discount when refinancing concentration or maturity mismatch is high.

A lower P/B is not automatically cheaper. It may reflect weaker expected returns, poorer asset quality, higher funding risk, governance concerns or a need to raise capital. Record the date, price source, share count, book-value period and earnings period for every multiple in your worksheet.

A practical step-by-step comparison process

  1. Set the cut-off date. Choose one date for market prices and use the latest available filing from each company at that date. Mark quarter-versus-year mismatches.
  2. Identify the business model. Label IDBI Bank as a deposit-funded bank and HDBFS as a lending NBFC. Do not place CASA, deposits or bank NIM into an NBFC column.
  3. Build a three-to-five-year operating history. Collect advances or AUM, deposits or borrowings, revenue, NII or spread, operating expenses, provisions, PAT, ROA and ROE.
  4. Reconcile asset quality. Add gross and net NPAs for the bank; stage-3 assets and overdue buckets for the NBFC. Include slippages, write-offs, restructurings and recoveries.
  5. Stress funding and credit. Model higher deposit or borrowing costs, slower collections, a rise in delinquencies and a fall in recovery rates.
  6. Check capital and liquidity. Compare current regulatory ratios with projected risk-weighted assets or AUM, maturities and planned dividends.
  7. Read ownership and corporate-action documents. For HDBFS, review the 2025 IPO documents; for IDBI Bank, review the latest shareholding and governance filings.
  8. Calculate valuation last. Use same-date market capitalisation, latest book value and normalised earnings. Keep bank and NBFC assumptions separate.
  9. Write a one-page decision note. State the expected return driver, the largest downside, the metric that would invalidate the thesis and the next filing date you will review.

Decision rules for different investor priorities

If you prioritise deposit-franchise economics

Give greater weight to IDBI Bank’s CASA trend, deposit stability, loan growth, NIM, credit costs, capital ratios and operating efficiency. The investment case depends on converting a stable funding base into consistently profitable, well-underwritten advances.

If you prioritise loan-book growth

Examine HDBFS’s AUM and disbursement growth by product, spread after funding costs, collection performance and incremental capital needs. Reject growth that depends on weakening underwriting or increasingly short-term refinancing.

If you prioritise downside protection

Compare provision coverage, loss-absorption capital, liquidity buffers, maturity gaps, concentration and governance. A company with lower headline valuation can still have greater downside if a stress scenario erodes book value faster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are considering HDBFS after its IPO

Separate the IPO mechanics from the business case. The ₹2,500 crore fresh issue can strengthen the company’s capital base, while the ₹10,000 crore offer for sale primarily provides an exit for selling shareholders. Read the prospectus risk factors and then judge post-listing results against AUM quality, funding costs, liquidity and returns.

Common comparison errors

  • Calling both companies “banks.” This hides the funding and liquidity differences that drive risk.
  • Mixing dates. A 2024 bank ratio and a 2025 NBFC profit cannot support a same-period valuation conclusion.
  • Treating one asset-quality number as the whole story. Trends in slippages, write-offs, restructurings and recoveries matter.
  • Using P/B without ROE. Book value is not cheap if the business cannot earn an adequate return on it.
  • Ignoring refinancing risk. NBFC liquidity can deteriorate even while reported profit remains positive.
  • Counting an offer for sale as company funding. In HDBFS’s IPO structure, only the fresh issue adds new capital to HDBFS.
  • Assuming regulatory labels guarantee safety. Capital and liquidity rules reduce risk but do not prevent losses or poor governance.
  • Using stale prices. Recalculate market capitalisation and multiples immediately before publication or purchase.

Ongoing monitoring checklist

After investing, review each quarterly or annual filing against the original thesis:

  • Deposit and CASA growth for IDBI Bank; AUM, disbursement and borrowing growth for HDBFS.
  • NIM and credit costs for the bank; spreads, cost of funds and credit costs for the NBFC.
  • Gross and net NPA, stage-3 assets, SMA buckets, restructurings, write-offs and recoveries.
  • Capital adequacy, CET1 or applicable NBFC capital ratios, liquidity coverage and maturity gaps.
  • Funding concentration, refinancing events, securitisation or portfolio-sale activity.
  • ROA, ROE, cost-to-income and any one-time gains or losses.
  • Shareholding, related-party transactions, management changes and new corporate actions.
  • Valuation after every major price move or results release, using the new book value and earnings base.

Set explicit thresholds before buying—for example, a maximum acceptable credit-cost increase, minimum liquidity buffer or minimum sustainable ROE. Predefined rules reduce the temptation to explain away a deteriorating thesis after the share price falls.

Bottom line

IDBI Bank suits a comparison centred on deposits, CASA, bank NIM, capital and provisioning. HDB Financial Services requires an NBFC analysis centred on AUM, disbursements, spreads, borrowing costs, liquidity and stage-3 asset trends. The better investment is the one whose valuation is justified by sustainable returns after realistic credit and funding stress—not the one with the lower headline multiple. Use aligned dates, read the filings and refresh prices before acting.
