To judge a holiday offer, compare the exact product across sellers, calculate its full delivered cost, check the seller and return terms, and treat the crossed-out price as a claim—not a baseline.
Start with the exact product you want
Before browsing promotions, note the manufacturer, model number, size, color, configuration, and any features you require. Similar-looking products can differ in specifications or condition, so a lower price is meaningful only when you are comparing the same item. The FTC’s online-shopping guidance recommends recording identifying details such as the model number when comparing offers.

Keep the comparison tied to what you would actually buy. A discount on a different model, an unwanted bundle, or a product that lacks a must-have feature is not a saving on your intended purchase.

Compare the current price, not just the advertised markdown
Check the same product at several reputable sellers. If available, use a price-history record or set a price alert to see how the current offer compares with earlier prices. A comparison-shopping site can help, but it is not automatically impartial: the FTC notes that some sites promote their own products or rank sellers when payment is involved. Consider how the site earns money and whether its rankings explain that clearly.

A crossed-out “regular” price or a large percentage-off figure does not establish that the item is unusually cheap. The FTC says the same truthfulness standards apply to sale-price and price-comparison claims. It also cautions that suggested retail prices may be higher than what stores typically charge, so a markdown from that reference alone can exaggerate the apparent saving. Evidence from selected retailers illustrates why it is worth checking. Consumers’ Checkbook tracked selected products at 25 national chains weekly for 24 weeks beginning in February 2025. Its November 2025 report found that 21 chains advertised sale prices more than half the time; the other 19 retailers in the study labeled tracked items “on sale” about 76% of the tracking period on average. These findings apply to that study’s retailers, products, and observation window—not every store or holiday offer. Kevin Brasler, the organization’s executive editor, said, “Seeing 50 percent or 60 percent off a regular price doesn’t mean anything. The only way to make sure you’re getting the best deal is to shop around.” Consumers’ Checkbook’s methods and findings.

Calculate the full cost before deciding
Compare what you will actually pay, not only the product’s listed price. Add unavoidable shipping, handling, delivery charges, taxes, and other fees. Read the conditions attached to coupons, bundles, rebates, and limited-time offers; a headline discount may depend on spending more or meeting requirements you would not otherwise choose. The FTC’s online-shopping guidance recommends checking total costs and deal terms.

The table is a checklist, not a substitute for the listing: fees, taxes, delivery options, and policies depend on the seller and destination. Check the final checkout total and current terms before paying.
Check the seller, returns, and offer conditions
A low number is not the only risk to weigh. Confirm who is selling the item, whether the product’s condition is clearly described, and whether the listing comes from a seller you trust. Review the return deadline, return-shipping responsibility, restocking fees, and any special rules for clearance or sale items. Also check whether a price-match or post-purchase adjustment applies, and what exclusions or deadlines govern it.

The FTC warns that unusually low prices on products that normally cost much more can be a warning sign of scam sites, counterfeit-looking goods, or orders that never arrive. For an unfamiliar seller, search the seller’s name alongside terms such as “review,” “complaint,” or “scam,” and look for clear contact, refund, and return information. Its holiday-shopping scam guidance also advises against paying an online seller that insists on gift cards, wire transfer, payment apps, or cryptocurrency.

A practical holiday-sale check
- Write down the item: capture the model number and required size, configuration, features, and condition.
- Check several reputable sellers: compare the exact item, and treat comparison-site rankings as one input rather than a neutral verdict.
- Check its price context: use price history or alerts if available; do not rely on the displayed original price or discount percentage alone.
- Work out the delivered total: include unavoidable fees, shipping, handling, delivery, and taxes, then read coupon, bundle, rebate, and limited-offer conditions.
- Review the seller and policies: inspect authenticity signals, return and refund terms, return costs, and any price-match deadlines.
- Keep a record: save the listing, price, date, seller terms, and receipt in case the order or advertised terms are disputed. A notebook can serve as a manual log, but it does not track prices automatically.
What sale statistics can—and cannot—tell you
Sale-price patterns vary by retailer and region, so study results should be read within their stated scope. In a European Commission summary of an EU consumer-protection sweep of Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, published March 26, 2026, 34% of traders displayed price comparisons; among those, 60% did not clearly explain the reference price.
