There is no defensible single winner among HCLTech, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys, and Wipro without a common valuation date and your own risk and income objectives. Start with the same fiscal period and definitions: compare constant-currency and reported growth, operating margins on the same basis, order-book or deal measures, cash conversion, business mix, guidance, balance-sheet strength, and then the price you would pay for normalized earnings. FY26 disclosures show HCLTech and Infosys growing in constant currency, while TCS and Wipro declined on the cited constant-currency measures. Those operating results are useful screens, not automatic buy signals.
What a fair four-way comparison must answer
Indian IT companies report similar headline measures but are not identical businesses. TCS is much larger than the other three; HCLTech combines IT services with a software division; Infosys has a large transformation and consulting business; and Wipro’s figures in the cited release refer specifically to IT services. A useful comparison therefore asks six separate questions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Is revenue growing after removing currency movements?
- Are margins reported on a comparable statutory or adjusted basis?
- Do bookings provide credible future revenue, and how are they defined?
- Does accounting profit turn into operating or free cash flow?
- Which services, software products, geographies, and industries drive the result?
- Is the current share price reasonable relative to sustainable earnings, cash returns, and growth?
Use company filings and investor releases for the same period, record the reporting currency and fiscal year, and keep reported results alongside constant-currency results. Constant currency helps judge underlying demand; reported rupee or dollar results describe what shareholders actually received after exchange-rate movements.

| Company | Growth measure | Profitability | Bookings, cash, or scale indicator | FY27 guidance or context |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HCLTech | Revenue up 3.9% in constant currency; services revenue up 4.8% in constant currency; HCLSoftware annual recurring revenue (ARR) $1.05 billion, down 0.5% in constant currency | EBIT margin 17.2%; 17.9% excluding restructuring costs | New-deal total contract value (TCV) $9.3 billion | Initial guidance: 1.0%–4.0% company growth and 17.5%–18.5% EBIT margin |
| TCS | Revenue up 4.6% in reported rupees but down 2.4% in constant currency | Operating margin 25.0% | $40.7 billion order book | Not stated in the cited FY26 comparison |
| Infosys | Revenue up 3.1% in constant currency; reported revenue $20.158 billion | IFRS operating margin 20.3%; adjusted operating margin 21.0% | $14.9 billion large-deal TCV; free cash flow $3.733 billion | 1.5%–3.5% constant-currency growth and 20%–22% operating margin |
| Wipro | IT-services revenue $10.478 billion, down 0.3% reported and 1.6% in constant currency | IT-services operating margin 17.2% | Bookings TCV $16.4 billion; operating cash flow 112.6% of net income | Not stated in the cited FY26 comparison |
TCV and order-book figures are not interchangeable: a backlog can include different contract durations, renewals, pass-through costs, and cancellation or ramp assumptions. Neither a TCV award nor an order book is recognized revenue, and neither guarantees timing or margin.
TCS’s annual report states FY26 profit after tax of ₹52,820 crore (₹528.2 billion). An investor-page shorthand rendered the figure as “$5.9 billion”; do not quote that shorthand without identifying its unit and source.
Step 1: Separate reported growth from underlying growth
Why the distinction changes the ranking
Exchange rates can make a declining business appear to grow in its reporting currency, or suppress the reported result of an otherwise stable business. TCS is the clearest FY26 example: reported revenue rose 4.6% in rupees while constant-currency revenue fell 2.4%. The positive currency translation, rather than underlying demand, explains the difference.
HCLTech’s FY26 revenue grew 3.9% in constant currency and its services revenue grew 4.8%, while the software division’s $1.05 billion ARR declined 0.5% in constant currency. That split matters: recurring software economics and project-based services have different renewal, margin, and investment profiles.
Infosys reported 3.1% constant-currency growth and $20.158 billion of reported revenue. Wipro’s IT-services revenue declined 1.6% in constant currency and 0.3% on a reported basis. Label every rate with “reported” or “constant currency,” the fiscal year, and the segment covered.

A practical growth worksheet
- Enter reported revenue growth for FY26 in each company’s reporting currency.
- Enter constant-currency growth beside it, using the same fiscal period.
- Calculate the gap between the two rates; a large gap flags currency sensitivity.
- Split services, software, consulting, and other businesses when the company discloses them.
- Check whether growth came from volume, pricing, acquisitions, or one large client or contract.
Do not rank companies on a single percentage. A smaller firm can grow faster from a lower base, while a larger firm may produce more absolute cash with slower growth.
Step 2: Compare margins without mixing definitions
Reported versus adjusted profit
HCLTech reported a 17.2% FY26 EBIT margin and 17.9% excluding restructuring costs. Infosys reported a 20.3% IFRS operating margin and a 21.0% adjusted operating margin. Those pairs show why an adjusted margin cannot replace the statutory or IFRS figure: each company decides which costs to exclude, and the exclusions may not match.
TCS reported a 25.0% operating margin, the highest headline margin in this set, but its business mix and reporting presentation differ from HCLTech, Infosys, and Wipro. Wipro reported a 17.2% operating margin for IT services, not necessarily for every consolidated activity.
How to make the margin comparison useful
- Put reported EBIT or operating margin in the first column.
- Put adjusted margin in a separate column and name the adjustment.
- Keep consolidated and segment margins separate.
- Track the direction over several quarters rather than treating one quarter as a trend.
- Ask whether margin expansion came from utilization, subcontractor costs, wage timing, pricing, or a temporary charge.
Infosys said labor-code changes reduced consolidated operating margin by 0.7 percentage points. HCLTech disclosed restructuring effects. Treat these disclosures as explanations for the period, not as permission to ignore recurring costs.
Step 3: Test bookings and revenue visibility
Bookings can reveal demand before it appears in revenue, but the measures here are different. HCLTech reported $9.3 billion of new-deal TCV; TCS reported a $40.7 billion order book; Infosys reported $14.9 billion of large-deal TCV; and Wipro reported $16.4 billion of bookings TCV. These numbers cannot be placed in a simple league table because “order book,” “large deal,” contract duration, and inclusion rules differ.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
Questions to ask about every booking number
- Is it total contract value, annualized contract value, or remaining backlog?
- What share is new work, renewal, or rebid business?
- Over how many years will the contract be delivered?
- What portion is pass-through spending rather than high-margin services?
- Has the company disclosed conversion expectations, cancellations, or ramp timing?
- Does the deal require hiring or investment before revenue and cash arrive?
A large contract can increase future visibility while depressing near-term margins during transition. Conversely, a lower TCV can be more valuable if it has shorter duration, stronger pricing, and faster cash collection.

Step 4: Check cash conversion and shareholder returns
Profit is an accrual measure; cash flow tests whether customers actually paid and whether the company needed unusual working-capital support. Infosys reported FY26 free cash flow of $3.733 billion. Wipro reported operating cash flow equal to 112.6% of net income. These are useful indicators, but they use different cash-flow definitions and should not be treated as identical scores.
Cash-flow checklist
- Record operating cash flow and net income for the same fiscal year.
- Calculate operating cash flow divided by net income, while noting working-capital movements.
- Use free cash flow only after checking the company’s definition of capital expenditure and other adjustments.
- Review dividends, buybacks, acquisitions, and cash retained for investment.
- Check net cash, debt maturities, lease obligations, and any large customer advances.
High cash conversion is not automatically superior if growth is being sacrificed, and a temporarily low ratio may reflect deliberate investment or a timing swing. Look for consistency across years and reconcile unusual movements to the notes.
Step 5: Understand business mix and execution risk
HCLTech’s combination of services and HCLSoftware means its consolidated growth includes both project and recurring software economics. Its FY26 software ARR was $1.05 billion and declined 0.5% in constant currency even as services grew 4.8%. An investor seeking stable subscription growth should examine ARR, renewal rates, and software margins separately from services utilization.
TCS, Infosys, and Wipro also differ in industry exposure, geography, service-line mix, client concentration, onsite delivery, and subcontracting. A headline company margin may rise because of mix rather than broad productivity. Read segment revenue, vertical growth, large-client concentration, and attrition together.

Execution indicators worth tracking each quarter
- Revenue growth in constant currency by service line and industry.
- Large-deal wins and the proportion converted to revenue.
- Utilization, voluntary attrition, subcontractor use, and employee additions.
- Pricing, wage increases, and currency hedging effects.
- Receivables, contract assets, and cash collection.
- Client concentration and exposure to discretionary technology budgets.
Step 6: Update the HCLTech view with the latest disclosed quarter
HCLTech’s investor-relations page dated October 12, 2026 listed Q2 FY27 results, which are more recent than its FY26 release. It reported revenue of ₹35,620 crore, up 11.5% year over year, and an EBIT margin of 18.2%, including an 84-basis-point restructuring effect. The same update gave FY27 guidance of 2.5%–4.0% company growth, 3.0%–4.0% services growth, and 17.5%–18.5% EBIT margin, replacing the earlier 1.0%–4.0% company-growth range as the current reference point.
HCLTech also reported $219 million of advanced-AI revenue for that quarter. This is a company-reported category, not independent proof of durable AI economics. Check the definition, recurring versus project revenue, contract duration, margin, and cash collection before assigning a premium valuation to it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 7: Treat guidance as a forecast, not a result
FY27 guidance expresses management’s assumptions about demand, currency, hiring, pricing, and deal timing. Infosys guided to 1.5%–3.5% constant-currency growth and a 20%–22% operating margin. HCLTech’s latest Q2 update guided to 2.5%–4.0% company growth, 3.0%–4.0% services growth, and a 17.5%–18.5% EBIT margin.
Compare each forecast with the prior year’s actual result, then record whether management raises, narrows, or cuts it. Do not treat the midpoint as a guaranteed outcome. A guidance miss can result from delayed client decisions even when long-term demand remains intact.
Step 8: Value the earnings on one common date
Operating quality and investment returns are different questions. A strong company can be a poor purchase when its price already assumes years of exceptional growth; a slower company can offer a better return if expectations are low and cash distributions are reliable.
Best Value
Build a matched valuation sheet
- Choose one date—for example, the closing price on the day you make the decision.
- Use the same trailing-12-month or forward-12-month earnings definition for all four companies.
- Record price-to-earnings, enterprise-value-to-EBIT or EBITDA where meaningful, free-cash-flow yield, dividend yield, and net cash.
- Normalize earnings for restructuring, labor-code effects, unusual tax items, currency gains, and temporary working-capital movements.
- Stress-test a lower-growth and lower-margin case before accepting the market’s implied growth rate.
Infosys’s FY26 annual report gives a year-end P/E of 17.5x. That is a historical year-end figure, not a matched October 13, 2026 multiple for all four companies, so it should not be compared directly with today’s peer prices. A complete valuation table requires current prices and consistently calculated earnings that are not established by the FY26 operating disclosures alone.
A decision framework for the four stocks
| If your priority is… | Evidence to investigate first | What could invalidate the thesis |
|---|---|---|
| Higher underlying growth | HCLTech’s 3.9% FY26 constant-currency growth and 4.8% services growth; Infosys’s 3.1% constant-currency growth | Growth concentrated in low-margin work, weak cash conversion, or an expensive valuation |
| Margin scale | TCS’s 25.0% FY26 operating margin | Constant-currency decline, adverse demand mix, or a price that assumes margins cannot fall |
| Recurring software exposure | HCLSoftware ARR, $1.05 billion in FY26, alongside services performance | ARR decline, weak renewals, or software investment lowering consolidated returns |
| Large-deal visibility | TCS’s $40.7 billion order book, Infosys’s $14.9 billion large-deal TCV, HCLTech’s $9.3 billion new-deal TCV, and Wipro’s $16.4 billion bookings TCV | Different definitions, long implementation periods, cancellations, or poor conversion to profitable revenue |
| Cash realization | Infosys’s $3.733 billion free cash flow and Wipro’s operating cash flow at 112.6% of net income | One-off working-capital benefit, high capital requirements, or weak multi-year consistency |
This matrix identifies where to do deeper work; it does not designate a stock to buy. Your final choice should combine the operating evidence with valuation, tax situation, portfolio concentration, time horizon, and tolerance for drawdowns.
Risks that can make a good comparison fail
Client spending and deal timing
IT budgets can be delayed, reduced, or redirected, and a signed contract may ramp later than expected. Guidance can change with macroeconomic conditions and client decisions.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Currency translation
Many contracts are priced in foreign currencies while costs are partly in rupees. Currency movements affect reported revenue, margins, hedges, and shareholder returns. Always retain both reported and constant-currency views.
Adjustments and one-off charges
Restructuring and labor-code effects can be economically real even when management presents an adjusted metric. Start with reported results, then explain each adjustment and decide whether it is genuinely nonrecurring.
AI expectations
AI-related revenue labels are management disclosures, not independent evidence of durable incremental profit. Look for contract renewal, measurable customer spend, delivery productivity, realized pricing, and cash collection.
Valuation compression
Even execution that matches guidance can produce a poor return if the market multiple falls. Model what happens when growth slows, margins revert, or investors demand a lower P/E.
Pre-investment checklist
- Have all four companies been compared for the same fiscal period and on the same currency basis?
- Did you separate consolidated, services, and software figures?
- Are statutory and adjusted margins shown separately?
- Did you document each booking metric’s definition and expected conversion?
- Did you reconcile operating cash flow and free cash flow to the financial statements?
- Did you replace superseded guidance with the latest release available on your decision date?
- Are the valuation multiples calculated from the same date and earnings basis?
- Have you tested a slower-growth, lower-margin case and considered concentration risk?
If a company fails the data-quality test—for example, because its booking definition or adjusted earnings cannot be reconciled—mark the figure as unknown rather than filling the gap with a peer’s metric. A transparent “not comparable” is more useful than false precision.
