To find out whether ALDI or Walmart is cheaper for your grocery list, compare the same items at the specific locations you can shop, then total the basket using the same shopping method. Check package sizes and unit prices, and include pickup or delivery fees and final weighed-item amounts. There is no reliable universal winner: prices, products and availability can vary by location and fulfillment method.
Build a like-for-like shopping list
Write down what you actually plan to buy, including the quantity, preferred brand and package size. Match exact products when possible. If one store does not carry the same product, record the alternative and label the difference—for example, ALDI store brand versus a national brand at Walmart—rather than presenting them as identical.

Package sizes matter. A lower shelf price may buy less food, so compare price per ounce, pound or count. Divide the package price by its net quantity and keep the units consistent. For example, compare two prices per ounce rather than one package price against another when the package sizes differ.
Use the locations and shopping channels you will actually use
Check the nearby ALDI and Walmart locations serving you, and note the date and whether each price is for in-store shopping, pickup or delivery. ALDI says prices may fluctuate by location or fulfillment method in its pickup FAQ. Its terms of use also allow physical-store and online-service prices to vary. Walmart says store-price differences can reflect local operating costs, supply, shipping logistics, competition and clearance; see its pricing policy.

Online listings are useful for planning, but they are not guaranteed shelf prices. Instacart says retailers set marketplace item prices, which can differ from in-store prices, and some in-store promotions may not apply on the marketplace; see Instacart’s pricing information. For a fair comparison, use in-store prices for both stores or compare the same online fulfillment type at each. If you must compare different channels, label that difference rather than treating the totals as directly equivalent.
Calculate the basket total—not just the lowest item price
- For each item, record the product, package size, price, quantity needed and unit price at both stores.
- Multiply each item’s price by the quantity you plan to buy. Add those amounts to get each store’s product subtotal.
- For online orders, add applicable delivery or pickup charges, service fees, bag charges and other checkout costs. Check the selected store and time, since fees and order requirements can vary.
- Compare the final totals on the same basis, noting any discounts, substitutions or items unavailable at one location.
ALDI’s online fee information says delivery fees vary, service fees apply, pickup fees start at $1.99, and online minimums and bag charges may apply. An Instacart+ fee waiver may apply to eligible orders of at least $10, subject to the applicable terms. Confirm the actual charges at checkout rather than assuming a fee or waiver applies.

Allow for weighed items and substitutions
Produce, meat and other items priced by weight can make an online cart total provisional. ALDI’s terms say cart amounts for pound-priced items may be estimates; Instacart notes that actual weights and final prices can vary. Compare the final fulfilled amount when available, or mark the estimated weight and cost as uncertain. Also record whether a substitution changed the brand, size or product: a substituted item can alter both the comparison and the total.
Decide whether a small difference is worth another stop
If the totals are close, consider travel time and cost, product availability, convenience and whether a second stop is worthwhile for your household. Those are personal trade-offs, not measured savings. Retail prices and availability change, so check local listings shortly before shopping and keep the date with your comparison.

What retailer-wide claims can—and cannot—tell you
ALDI’s 2025 press release summarizing its Price Leadership Report claims $8.3 billion in shopper savings (ALDI’s report announcement). That is ALDI’s reported aggregate claim, not an independent comparison of your local ALDI and Walmart basket. Walmart CEO John Furner described the company’s Every Day Low Prices principle on September 25, 2026, in a Walmart statement; that description is not independent evidence that Walmart is always cheaper than ALDI.
Walmart’s published U.S. price-match policy does not match competitor prices. It describes a conditional match for an identical item advertised on Walmart.com at a U.S. store, with exclusions; it cannot be used to make Walmart match an ALDI shelf price.
