How to Compare Grocery Prices and Find the Best Deals Near You

To find the best grocery deal nearby, compare the same basket at the specific stores you might visit, use unit prices when package sizes differ, and check the final cost after promotion rules and delivery or pickup fees. Prices and offers change by location and date, so verify them before buying.

How to compare grocery prices near you

Start with a short list of the groceries you actually plan to buy. For each item, compare the same product—or a substitute you would genuinely accept—across nearby stores. Match the brand, product type, quantity, and important attributes such as fresh versus frozen. A larger package is not a better deal if you will waste what you do not use.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Choose your basket. List the products and quantities you need for the shopping trip.
  2. Check local prices. Use each retailer’s website or weekly ad, selecting the store or ZIP code that matches where you shop.
  3. Compare equivalent items by unit price. Check that both prices use the same unit, such as price per pound or ounce.
  4. Apply the offer’s conditions. Confirm any loyalty-account requirement, minimum quantity, or other restriction, then calculate the total for the quantity you need.
  5. Compare the checkout total. For online orders, include delivery or service fees and account for any difference between online and in-store item prices.
  6. Recheck before purchasing. Confirm availability, the current price, and the terms for your selected store and fulfillment method.

This method keeps a low advertised price from being mistaken for the lowest cost of the shopping trip.

Why unit price is the fairest starting point

Package totals can be misleading when sizes differ. Unit price expresses the cost in a shared measure—such as dollars per ounce, pound, or quart—so you can compare different brands and package sizes more fairly. NIST’s Unit Pricing Guide recommends consistency when comparing across stores and online channels: make sure the unit shown is the same before deciding which option costs less per amount.

Unit price answers which package costs less for a given quantity; it does not answer whether buying that quantity makes sense for you. Consider how much you will use, whether the product is comparable, and the total amount you will pay. USDA MyPlate’s Shop Smart guidance puts the principle simply: “Compare prices to find the best buys.” It describes unit price as an item’s cost by its size or unit.

How to tell whether a weekly deal is actually a deal

A weekly ad can help you spot a lower advertised price, but the offer applies to a particular retailer, location, time period, and sometimes a particular way of paying or shopping. Open the ad or retailer listing for the store you intend to use, then read the conditions beside the price.

USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) Grocery Store Feature Reports can provide context on advertised retail prices collected from public sources, primarily retailer websites; some reports are issued weekly. They are not a complete, real-time shelf-price feed for every local store. Check the scope and date of a report, and use the selected retailer’s current local listing to verify an offer. How to compare delivery, pickup, and in-store totals

Compare what you will pay for the whole order, not just the item prices displayed in an app. Add applicable delivery or service fees and check whether online item prices differ from in-store prices. Also account for any promotion conditions that apply only to a specific ordering method.

The Federal Trade Commission advises consumers to calculate total costs and read deal terms in its online shopping guidance. In May 2026, the FTC also invited public input on fee disclosures, variable or personalized prices, and whether online prices are higher than in-store prices. That alert sought public input; it is not a finding that every service uses those practices. For your comparison, check the prices and fees shown for your own order before checkout: FTC May 2026 alert.

What grocery price data can—and cannot—tell you

USDA’s Food-at-Home Monthly Area Prices product reports monthly mean unit values and price indexes for 90 food-at-home categories across 15 U.S. geographic areas. Updated April 10, 2026, it can help describe area-level prices over time, but it cannot establish today’s exact price at an individual nearby store. Use it for broad context rather than as a live local price list: USDA ERS Food-at-Home Monthly Area Prices.

Should you shop at more than one store?

A split shop can make sense when the savings on your actual basket exceed the extra cost of getting to another store, including travel, time, and any additional fulfillment costs. There is no universal savings threshold: it depends on your route, basket, and how you shop. Compare the total basket cost at each store, then weigh any difference against the added trip rather than treating the lowest price on one item as the best overall deal.

How common are these comparison habits?

Reported shopper behavior shows that people use several ways to look for deals, but it does not show how much any particular shopper saves. NIST’s 2025 Unit Pricing Guide cites Grocery Shopper Trends 2023 for the finding that 74% of shoppers use unit pricing in a store when it is available. USDA’s Food Prices & the Consumer 2024, reproducing FMI’s 2024 survey figures, reports that 64% of smartphone-owning shoppers check weekly sales specials at their primary store at least occasionally, 63% use digital coupons at least occasionally, and 36% scan grocery-item barcodes or QR codes to compare prices across stores at least occasionally. These are reported behaviors, not evidence of a specific savings amount. See the NIST guide and USDA’s 2024 report.
