To find out whether pickup or delivery costs less, compare the final checkout totals for the same grocery basket at the same retailer, using the same address, time window and membership status. Include item prices and mandatory charges, keep optional tips separate, and recheck the total just before submitting the order.
Why the fee depends on your order
There is no single fee structure for grocery pickup or delivery. Charges can depend on the retailer, location, basket contents, order total, delivery window and membership eligibility. A delivery-fee waiver does not necessarily remove service, speed or other charges.

Compare the same basket in checkout
- Start with one retailer and one basket. Match products, quantities and available substitutions for pickup and delivery. Item prices, promotions and changes to the cart can affect the total.
- Hold the conditions steady. Use the same delivery address and, where possible, compare the same time window. Keep the membership status you actually have; count a benefit only if the current checkout applies it to your order.
- Read every charge in the checkout breakdown. Look for delivery or pickup charges, service or convenience fees, small-order or minimum-order charges, priority or speed fees, taxes, bottle deposits and bag charges. Names and applicability vary by service and location.
- Separate optional tip from mandatory charges. Instacart says its service fee is not a tip; the tip goes to the shopper. Compare mandatory totals first, then decide whether and how much to tip.
- Compare final totals, not a headline offer. Record the pickup total and delivery total, including the same items and applicable charges. Verify the amount again before submitting; edits, substitutions, refunds or promotions can change the final cost.

How to choose when the totals are close
Use the mandatory checkout total as the price comparison, then weigh convenience separately. Pickup may avoid some delivery charges, but it is not safe to assume every retailer has no pickup fee. Delivery can have a higher total yet save the time and travel involved in collecting the order. Decide whether that tradeoff is worthwhile for you rather than treating convenience as a fee.
Retailer membership terms are not interchangeable. Instacart+, Walmart+, Target Circle 360 and Kroger Boost have service-specific eligibility and conditions. Compare the order with the membership status you have, and use a membership benefit only when the current checkout shows that your order qualifies.

Confirm the charge after ordering
Checkout is the best point to compare an order-specific total, but the amount can change when the order changes. Instacart says changes to an order can affect its service-fee total and final cost. Kroger says the service charge or delivery fee appears on the final receipt. Review the receipt against the checkout breakdown and contact the retailer or platform if a charge is unclear.
