Compare the same gold item, in the same quantity, using dealer quotes taken close together in time. Estimate its contained-gold value from a timestamped spot reference, then compare each dealer’s premium, checkout charges, delivery cost, and buyback offer. Spot is a benchmark for comparison—not the retail price a buyer should expect to pay.
Compare identical products and quote times
Start with the exact coin or bar, not simply a product described as “gold.” Match its stated weight, purity or fine-gold content, and quantity. Retail products can carry different premiums even when they contain similar amounts of gold, so comparing unlike items can make one dealer appear cheaper when the product itself is different. The CFTC and FINRA buyer bulletin advises comparing actual weight and price; the Royal Canadian Mint’s bullion guide explains how product type and size affect premiums.

Gold prices move during the day. Record the dealer’s quote time and a spot reference from the same period, then compare offers close together. Spot is the current price reference for one troy ounce of metal for immediate delivery, commonly quoted in dollars per troy ounce; it is not a promise that a retail coin or bar is available at that price. A benchmark such as the LBMA benchmark is also distinct from a dealer’s retail offer.
Calculate the premium over the gold value
Use the product’s fine-gold content—not just its gross weight—to estimate the value of its gold at the chosen spot reference. Subtract that metal value from the dealer’s item price to find the premium in currency. Divide the premium by the metal value and multiply by 100 to express it as a percentage.

Premium amount = dealer item price − estimated contained-gold value
Premium percentage = premium amount ÷ estimated contained-gold value × 100
For example, if a hypothetical item contains one troy ounce of fine gold, use the one-ounce spot reference as its estimated metal value. The difference between that value and the dealer’s quoted item price is the premium. This calculation isolates the product markup; it does not include shipping, payment charges, taxes, or other costs.
The Mint guide describes premiums as amounts above the value of the metal in a product and attributes them to factors including production and transportation. Smaller products typically carry higher premiums relative to their gold content. That is a general pattern, not a guarantee for every product or dealer.

Compare the full checkout total
A low item price may not be the lowest-cost offer after charges are added. Ask each dealer for the agreed retail price and every applicable fee in writing, then add delivery and any other costs that apply to that specific purchase. Depending on the transaction, costs may include payment or transaction charges, storage, insurance, or taxes. Account-related fees and possible tax penalties discussed in the CFTC/FINRA bulletin concern IRA arrangements; they should not be assumed to apply to an ordinary retail purchase.
The CFTC and FINRA put it plainly: “Ask for all fees, costs, commissions, and agreed retail price in writing BEFORE signing a sales agreement or turning over any money.” Compare the resulting totals for the same product and quantity, and reconfirm quotes before ordering because prices and inventory can change.
Check the buyback price and spread
Ask what the dealer would pay to buy back the same item and under what conditions. Include any selling costs or restrictions in your notes. The difference between a dealer’s selling price and its buyback price is the spread. A low premium at purchase does not by itself show what it may cost to resell; compare the exit price alongside the checkout total.

Weigh product format separately from dealer pricing
Hold the product constant when judging which dealer offers the better price. If you are also deciding between formats, compare the trade-offs independently:

- Coins: can make it easier to sell only part of a holding, though premiums vary by coin and dealer.
- Smaller pieces: may require less cash for an individual purchase but typically cost more per unit of gold.
For a format comparison, consider premium per unit of fine gold, minimum purchase and total cash outlay, ease of partial resale, buyback terms, and delivery or storage costs. These are general trade-offs, not guaranteed outcomes for every product.

Price is only one part of the comparison. Check how long the seller has operated, whether its address and complaint history are verifiable, and whether its service and buyback process meet your needs. The Mint guide identifies price, trust, and accessibility as factors in choosing a dealer. A low quote alone is not evidence of a sound transaction.

For buyers in the United States, the CFTC/FINRA bulletin says retail precious-metals dealers are not federally regulated and recommends checking with local consumer organizations and state regulators. The bulletin also reports that, over the preceding decade, the CFTC charged numerous companies with selling overpriced precious metals in sales alleged to exceed $500 million in total. That is an allegation about those cases, not a measure of all dealer overpricing or a current market statistic.
