What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not choose between critic and player scores as if one is automatically correct. They are different evidence. Before buying, identify what each number measures, how it was calculated, how many people contributed, whether they played the same platform and edition, and whether the comments describe the current version. A gap is a prompt to investigate—not proof that critics or players are wrong.
The most reliable decision comes from matching specific, recent reasons to the way you will play. A performance problem on your console, an online population issue, or a missing accessibility feature matters more than a general ranking. Conversely, criticism of a genre convention you enjoy may be irrelevant to you.

Start by identifying what each score measures
Numbers that look comparable often are not. A critic score may be an editorial publication’s numerical judgment converted to a common scale. A player score may show the share of owners recommending a game. Treating both as averages out of 100 creates false precision.

|---|---|---|
| Metacritic | Critic review scores converted to 0–100 and combined into a weighted Metascore. | It summarizes publication scores, not one critic’s opinion, and the weighting means every review does not necessarily have equal influence. |
| Steam user reviews | A recommendation category based largely on the percentage of positive reviews, with additional display and calculation components. | It is not a critic-style 0–100 average. The category can change as owners post more reviews. |
| PlayStation Store UK | Ratings and reviews submitted under Sony’s store policy. | Availability and eligibility can vary by product and region; the UK policy is not a universal rule for every territory. |
Metacritic describes scores below 50 as generally negative and scores in the upper 70s or higher as usually unequivocally good for game reviews on its service. Those are conventions for interpreting that system, not universal pass/fail thresholds. A 78 on one scale and 78 percent positive recommendations on another do not mean the same thing.

Check how much evidence sits behind the number
Record the number of critic reviews and player reviews shown on the page. A score based on a small pool can move sharply when a few new opinions arrive; a large pool is usually more stable but may include older experiences that no longer describe the game.
Look beyond the average or category:
- Read several reviews from the positive, middle, and negative ends.
- Note whether opinions cluster around one issue or spread across unrelated strengths and weaknesses.
- Check the distribution when a site displays it. Two games can share a headline score while one has broad agreement and the other has sharply divided reactions.
- Separate launch impressions from comments written after substantial patches or downloadable content.
Do not manufacture a combined score by averaging a Metascore with a player percentage. First translate each result into a plain-language question: “How did professional publications judge this release?” and “What proportion of eligible users recommend it?”
Verify who is allowed to submit a review
Eligibility rules affect what a user score means. Steamworks documentation states that reviews counted in a game’s Steam review score come from accounts that purchased the game on Steam and played it. That rule is specific to Steam; it should not be generalized to every storefront or aggregator.

PlayStation’s UK reviews policy says users who acquired a digital game through their PlayStation account can review it, while also warning that reviews are not available for all products and may be limited in some regions. A physical owner, a player on another account, or someone in another territory may therefore have a different ability to contribute.

Match the exact game, platform, and edition
Confirm the title and version before comparing opinions. A review of a remaster may not apply to the original release. A PC report about shader stutter does not automatically describe the console version, and a deluxe edition with extra content may have different value from the standard edition.
- Platform: Identify the exact console, operating-system version, or PC storefront.
- Edition: Distinguish standard, deluxe, complete, early-access, and remastered editions.
- Release state: Note whether the comment concerns launch, a beta, or a patched build.
- Play mode: Separate solo, local co-op, competitive multiplayer, and live-service experiences.
- Hardware: Match reports to your graphics card, console generation, display, storage, and network conditions.
When a review does not identify its platform or build, treat technical conclusions as less transferable.
A practical nine-step comparison workflow
- Write down your buying target. Record the game name, platform, edition, intended purchase date, and whether you care most about story, combat, exploration, competitive play, accessibility, or technical performance.
- Open both kinds of evidence. Use a critic aggregate such as Metacritic and the relevant storefront’s player reviews. Do not rely on a search-result snippet or a score copied to a third-party list.
- Name each scale. Label Metacritic as a weighted 0–100 critic aggregation. Label Steam as a positive-review percentage/category, or label another storefront according to its published method. Keep the labels beside the numbers in your notes.
- Capture sample size and date. Write down the number of critic reviews, the number of player reviews, and the date you checked. Scores are moving summaries, not permanent specifications.
- Check eligibility. Read the platform’s policy to learn whether purchases, playtime, account ownership, region, or product availability restrict submissions.
- Separate lifetime from recent experience. On Steam, eligible games released more than 45 days earlier may show a recent review summary when enough recent reviews exist. Compare that recent view with the lifetime summary and read comments from the current period.
- Sample written reviews. Read at least a few detailed positive and negative comments from each group. Extract concrete claims: frame-rate drops, crashes, matchmaking waits, tutorial quality, save problems, progression, price, or accessibility behavior.
- Investigate the gap. Group repeated reasons by launch timing, updates, platform, expectations, or controversy. Treat each explanation as a hypothesis until the actual text supports it.
- Make a reason-based decision. Buy when the issues that matter to you are minor, old, or well addressed. Wait, seek a refund policy, or choose another game when a specific, recent, corroborated problem affects your planned use.
Why critic and player scores can disagree
Critics may judge a review-period build
Professional reviews are often written around release and may use a pre-launch or launch build. Players can evaluate the same game after patches, balance changes, server improvements, or new content. A low launch score and a stronger later player score can reflect genuine improvement; the reverse can occur when long-term monetization or support disappoints owners.

Players experience the game for longer
Owners discover issues that are difficult to assess in a short review window: repetitive endgame content, unstable matchmaking, grind, technical degradation, or a campaign that loses momentum. They may also appreciate depth, community-created strategies, and quality-of-life updates that were not visible to critics.
Expectations differ
A publication may assess originality, pacing, writing, art direction, and design polish across a broad editorial standard. Players may judge whether the game delivers the feature set, genre fantasy, or value they expected from marketing and earlier entries. Neither perspective is automatically more objective; they answer different questions.
Platform performance differs
Loading times, frame-rate modes, controller behavior, accessibility options, crashes, and online populations can vary by platform. If most negative comments concern a platform you will not use, their relevance is limited. If they concern your exact hardware, give them priority even when the overall score is high.

Community disputes can dominate a score
Players may react to a pricing change, account policy, developer statement, delayed feature, or other controversy. Such feedback can be important to a purchase decision, but it may not measure moment-to-moment gameplay. Identify whether the complaint is about the product, the surrounding business decision, or both.

Different audiences self-select
Critics receive review copies or seek broad coverage; players choose to buy, return, recommend, or post after personal investment. Their populations are not random samples of one another, so a numerical disagreement is expected rather than suspicious by default.
How to check whether a low score is a review bomb
Valve describes a review bomb as a large volume of reviews posted in a compressed period with the intention of lowering a score. It notes that such activity can make an aggregate less useful for predicting future purchaser satisfaction and discusses treatment of off-topic bombs in its policy explanation: Valve’s review-bombing explanation.
Look for several signals together:
- A steep, time-bound drop rather than a gradual change.
- Many reviews repeating nearly identical, off-topic wording.
- References focused on an external dispute with little discussion of the game.
- A recent score that differs dramatically from detailed reviews written before and after the event.
- A storefront notice or separate recent-score view that distinguishes unusual activity.
Do not dismiss every negative review once you spot a controversy. Read substantive comments for evidence about crashes, missing features, performance, pricing, or other buyer-relevant effects. A coordinated response and legitimate product criticism can coexist.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRead written reviews for transferable evidence
Extract facts from critic reviews
Look for the publication’s test platform, version, review date, and stated criteria. Note whether the score reflects a complete campaign, a limited multiplayer population, or an early access period. Give more weight to observations that match your priorities than to a publication’s final adjective.
Best Value
Filter player reviews by detail and recency
Prefer comments that identify hardware, hours played, update date, and a reproducible symptom. “It is bad” supplies little decision value; “the console version still loses saved settings after the March patch” is testable and relevant. Sort or browse recent comments when the storefront permits it, then verify whether the complaint persists.
Build a reason ledger
Use three columns: claim, evidence, and relevance to me. For example, “long matchmaking” may be supported by many recent multiplayer owners, while its relevance is zero if you plan to play offline. This prevents a vivid anecdote from outweighing a repeated, well-matched pattern.
Match evidence to your priorities
| Your priority | Evidence to seek | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Stable performance | Recent comments from your exact platform and hardware class. | Are crashes, stutter, saves, or loading problems still reported after current patches? |
| Solo story | Critic discussion of pacing and writing plus player reports about bugs and completion. | Does the campaign deliver the structure and tone you want? |
| Competitive multiplayer | Current matchmaking, population, balance, netcode, and anti-cheat reports. | Are players active in your region and at your preferred times? |
| Accessibility | Detailed tests of subtitles, remapping, color options, difficulty aids, and input support. | Are the specific features you require present on your platform? |
| Long-term value | Post-launch progression, monetization, update cadence, and endgame comments. | Does the ongoing cost and content model fit your budget and time? |
Use score patterns as prompts, not verdicts
| Pattern | What it may mean | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| High critic score, high player recommendation | Broad agreement, though platform-specific problems can still be hidden. | Verify your platform and read recent technical comments. |
| High critic score, low player recommendation | Possible launch-to-long-term decline, expectation mismatch, controversy, or review-bomb event. | Plot the timing, separate off-topic posts, and inspect current owner reports. |
| Low critic score, high player recommendation | A niche audience may value features critics disliked, or updates may have improved the game. | Check whether positive owners share your play style and whether their comments are recent. |
| Low scores from both groups | Problems may be broad, persistent, or central to the design. | Identify whether any specific issue is acceptable to you; otherwise wait or skip. |
| Highly divided scores | The game may target a narrow audience, vary by platform, or provoke strong expectations. | Read both extremes and decide whether the dividing feature appeals to you. |
Platform-specific details worth checking
Steam recent and lifetime summaries
Steam says eligible games released more than 45 days earlier may display a recent review score when enough recent reviews exist. The 45-day threshold and the availability of a recent summary are Steam-specific. Compare both summaries when shown; a lifetime result can conceal a major change in current reception.
Metacritic’s critic methodology
Metacritic converts publication scores to 0–100 and combines them into a weighted Metascore. The resulting number is useful for seeing the direction of professional coverage, but it is not an arithmetic average of every player’s experience and should not be combined directly with a storefront percentage.
PlayStation Store review availability
The UK policy allows reviews from users who acquired the digital game through their PlayStation account, while noting that ratings and reviews are not offered for every product and can be region-limited. If you are outside the UK, consult the policy for your territory before treating the displayed score as a verified-owner census.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Subtracting scores: A 90 Metascore minus 70 percent positive is not a meaningful 20-point gap. Identify the scales first.
- Ignoring sample size: A dramatic number with few reviews is unstable. Record counts and revisit after more evidence appears.
- Mixing platforms: Do not let PC driver problems decide a console purchase without checking console reports.
- Using launch comments as current facts: Check patch dates and recent summaries.
- Assuming every negative wave is fake: Investigate timing and wording, then separate off-topic activity from concrete defects.
- Trusting one vivid anecdote: Look for corroboration across detailed reviews and your exact use case.
- Ignoring your own priorities: A criticism matters only if it affects features, performance, value, or policies you care about.
Final pre-purchase checklist
- I confirmed the exact platform, edition, and current release state.
- I know whether each score is a critic aggregation, recommendation percentage, or another measure.
- I recorded review counts, dates, and any recent-versus-lifetime view.
- I checked who is eligible to post reviews on the relevant platform.
- I read detailed positive and negative comments, not only the headline numbers.
- I separated platform-specific defects, long-term issues, and external controversies.
- I found evidence that directly matches my hardware, play style, accessibility needs, and online plans.
- I can name the specific reason I will buy, wait, or skip.
Critic and player scores are most useful when they narrow your questions. Compare their methods, verify the version you will actually play, and let recent, specific evidence—not the higher number—drive the purchase.
