Use the same game build and scene, record the exact console mode or PC hardware and settings, separate internal rendering from output resolution, and report image quality, frame rate, frame pacing, and display conditions as different results. If a value is not measured or officially declared, label it unknown rather than guessing.
What a fair comparison actually measures
“Which version looks best?” combines several questions that can produce different answers. One version may render more sharply, another may offer higher-quality reflections, and a third may deliver a steadier frame rate. Treat these as separate axes instead of reducing them to one winner.

| Axis | Record |
|---|---|
| Image quality | Verified internal and output resolution, reconstruction method, anti-aliasing, texture and detail quality, shadows, reflections, other effects, and behavior during movement. |
| Performance | Frame-rate target, measured range, drops, frame pacing, stutter, tearing, responsiveness, and whether frame generation contributes to the displayed rate. |
| Modes and features | Available graphics modes, their trade-offs, ray tracing or other visual features, HDR and VRR support, and the display setup used. |
| PC configuration | CPU, GPU, memory where relevant, output resolution, preset and individual settings, upscaler mode, driver and game versions when material, and frame-generation status. |
| Evidence confidence | Whether each claim is an official declaration, an independent technical measurement, an editorial observation, or unverified. |
This separation prevents a common error: treating a “quality” or “performance” label, a 4K output setting, or a high FPS counter as a complete description of what the game is doing.
Why resolution labels and mode names are incomplete
A console menu can report a 4K output while the game renders internally at a lower, changing resolution and reconstructs the image. Conversely, a PC can be set to a 1440p display output while rendering at a different internal scale. Output resolution describes the signal sent to the display; it does not, by itself, prove the internal render resolution.

Record internal resolution only when a developer or a credible technical analysis has verified it. The same rule applies to dynamic-resolution ranges and reconstruction methods. If the source does not establish the value, write “not verified” or “unknown.” PSFoundry’s methodology states: “We never estimate a frame rate or a resolution.” It also says that “When a value isn’t verified it is shown as Unknown or Not verified — an empty field is information too.”
Resolution changes workload as well as sharpness. NVIDIA’s Control graphics guide notes that a 2560×1440 image contains 77% more pixels than 1920×1080. That is a pixel-count comparison, not a universal prediction of the FPS loss: the actual cost depends on the game, settings, scene, GPU, reconstruction method, and other effects.
Build a comparison brief before capturing anything
1. Lock the game version and test state
Use the same release, patch or build, downloadable-content state, and graphics-related updates on every platform. Write down the version number and date. A patch can change lighting, texture streaming, anti-aliasing, dynamic-resolution behavior, or frame-rate limits, making footage from two builds a false comparison.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose a repeatable scene and state: the same level, camera position, weather, time of day, mission phase, enemies, and gameplay activity whenever possible. If an open-world route is used, define the route and direction. A quiet corridor can hide streaming and frame-pacing problems that appear during traversal.
2. Identify the exact console mode
Record the platform model, game mode name, patch, output setting, HDR state, VRR state, and any performance toggle. A mode called “quality” usually signals a visual priority and “performance” usually signals a frame-rate priority, but the names do not establish exact internal resolution, stability, or feature parity. Describe what the mode is documented or observed to prioritize instead of calling two similarly named modes equivalent without evidence.
If a game exposes no detailed console settings, do not invent a hidden preset. Say that the console exposes a mode label but does not publicly verify every internal value. A community question such as “Is there any way to see the EXACT graphics settings PS5 / Xbox Series X uses?” captures the reader’s concern, but it is not evidence of a particular game’s implementation.
3. Document the PC configuration completely
“PC” is not a comparable configuration. Report at least:

- Frame-generation status and its base-render frame rate if measured.
Microsoft’s Xbox certification documentation, current in a release-history entry dated August 11, 2026, describes five PC test configurations with different CPU and GPU classes, display resolutions, and settings approaches. That illustrates why a single “PC version” result cannot stand in for all computers.
Separate output resolution from internal rendering
Make two fields in your notes: output and internal. Output is the resolution selected in the console or PC display path. Internal resolution is the image size actually rendered before reconstruction, scaling or presentation processing.
Also record how the image reaches the output:
- Native rendering: the game renders at the stated internal resolution, if verified.
- Dynamic resolution: internal resolution changes with workload to protect a frame-rate target.
- Upscaling or reconstruction: a lower-resolution render is converted to the output size using a defined method and quality mode.
- Render scaling: a PC setting changes the internal scale independently of the display output.
Do not call an upscaled 4K output “native 4K.” Use wording such as “4K output with an unverified internal resolution” unless a reliable source establishes more. Reconstruction can change edge stability, fine detail, foliage, reflections and motion artifacts, so it belongs beside the resolution value in the report.
Use still images and moving footage together
Stills are useful for inspecting texture detail, foliage, shadow edges, reflections, anti-aliasing and filtering. They cannot show temporal shimmer, ghosting, disocclusion errors, frame pacing or input response. Capture identical still frames only after matching camera position and display pipeline, then review synchronized moving footage at normal speed and in slow motion.
Recommended Free Tools
Look for changes that appear only while the camera or objects move:
- Shimmering on thin geometry, foliage, wires and distant detail.
- Ghost trails behind characters, particles or vehicles.
- Flickering reflections and unstable shadows.
- Sudden changes caused by dynamic resolution or level-of-detail streaming.
- Uneven motion despite a counter that reports a nominal target.
NVIDIA’s Control guide provides interactive comparisons for render scaling, anti-aliasing and DLSS variants. Its benchmarks use highly intensive locations to expose maximum effects cost; performance can be higher in less demanding areas. Apply that lesson to your own route: state whether your sequence represents a stress case, ordinary play, or both.
Measure frame rate, pacing and stability separately
A target is a design objective, not proof of delivery. Report what the game actually does over a declared sequence and duration. At minimum, note the average only if it is meaningful, the observed range, notable drops, frame-time spikes, and whether the result is stable after repeated runs.

Define the test sequence
- Choose a route or scene that can be replayed with the same camera movement and gameplay actions.
- Warm up the scene so shader compilation and asset streaming are not being compared in one run against cached data in another.
- Record a fixed duration or a complete route, and state which one you used.
- Repeat the run enough to identify a consistent behavior rather than a single lucky pass.
- Log frame rate and frame times, then annotate visible events such as explosions, traversal, crowds or weather changes.
Describe the result precisely
- Target: the intended cap or mode objective, such as a stated 30 or 60 frames per second.
- Measured range: the lowest and highest values observed in the declared sequence.
- Stability: whether the game holds near its target during ordinary play and stress moments.
- Frame pacing: whether frame delivery is evenly spaced. A steady 30 can look smoother than an erratic 40.
- Artifacts: visible stutter, tearing, judder or hitching.
- Responsiveness: control latency as a separate observation, not a synonym for FPS.
Frame generation requires an additional distinction: the displayed FPS can include generated frames while the underlying rendered-frame rate is lower. State both values when available and do not present generated output as equivalent to the same number of independently rendered frames.
Keep display conditions under control
Use the same display for console and PC comparisons when feasible, or disclose the differences. Match output resolution, refresh rate, picture mode, sharpness processing, motion interpolation and any game mode. Disable extra processing that one platform receives but the other does not.
HDR
HDR is not just a software checkbox. Microsoft’s DirectX documentation says HDR requires an HDR-capable monitor and a capable device. Record whether HDR is enabled in the operating system, console settings and game, and whether the display is actually operating in HDR mode. Compare brightness, black level and highlight detail only after the display has been calibrated consistently; otherwise a brighter image may simply be a different tone-mapping configuration.
VRR
Variable refresh rate changes the display’s refresh timing to match the frame rate. Microsoft describes VRR as a feature that lets compatible displays, including those using AMD FreeSync, Nvidia G-SYNC or VESA DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync, adjust refresh to the displayed frame rate. Record display compatibility, VRR enablement, refresh-rate range when known, and whether the platform falls outside that range during drops. A VRR display can reduce visible tearing and unevenness, but it does not turn an unstable render into a locked frame rate.
Compare console and PC settings without forcing equivalence
There are two legitimate PC goals, and they should not be mixed:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Matching a console mode
Use PC settings that reproduce the console’s verified output, reconstruction method, visual features and frame-rate objective as closely as evidence allows. If the console’s internal resolution or exact shadow setting is unknown, identify the PC setup as an approximation rather than a match.
Showing a PC maximum
Use a high-end GPU, higher output resolution or additional effects to demonstrate what the PC version can do. Label it as a different test, not as proof that the console version is inferior under equivalent conditions.

Do not reduce every PC setting to a single preset name. Presets can alter many options at once, and one game’s “high” may not correspond to another game’s “high.” When a setting materially changes the image or workload, list it individually. Xbox Wire’s September 16, 2019 discussion of Gears 5 is a useful game-specific example: the developers exposed more than 35 adjustable PC settings, with CPU, GPU and VRAM impact descriptions and visual previews for settings that directly affected appearance. That count applies to that game, not to the PC market as a whole.
Answering the “exact PS5 or Xbox Series X settings” question
Usually, a reader can see the selected mode and some output options, but not every internal engine variable. Consoles are fixed hardware targets, yet developers may use dynamic resolution, temporal reconstruction, variable effects quality, hidden level-of-detail rules and frame-rate caps that are not exposed in the menu.

For an exact claim, require one of these:
- An official developer or platform statement that names the value and conditions.
- A reproducible technical measurement from a reputable analysis that identifies the build and method.
- Directly observable menu settings, clearly limited to what the menu actually exposes.
If none exists, report the mode label, output setting and observed behavior, then mark internal values as unverified. “Quality mode runs at 4K” is too broad if the evidence only shows a 4K output signal. “The game offers a quality mode with 4K output; internal resolution was not verified” is accurate and useful.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Grade every statement by evidence
Use an evidence label in your notes and, where useful, in the published comparison:
| Label | Appropriate use |
|---|---|
| Officially declared | Developer, platform or operating-system documentation explicitly states support, a mode, a setting or a requirement. |
| Measured | A technical analysis identifies the game build, test scene and measurement method. |
| Editorial observation | A reviewer describes perceived sharpness, motion stability or artifact visibility without claiming a measured number. |
| Unverified | The value is not established. Leave it unknown rather than filling the gap with a likely figure. |
Keep measurements and impressions in different sentences. For example, “The measured sequence ranged from X to Y frames per second” is a technical result, while “The image appeared more stable during foliage movement” is an observation. Never turn the second statement into a claimed resolution or performance measurement.
A practical report format
A reader should be able to reproduce the comparison from your method notes. Include:
- Game identity: title, edition, patch or build and test date.
- Platform identity: exact console model and selected mode, or complete PC hardware and software details.
- Display path: output resolution, refresh rate, HDR, VRR and display model or relevant capabilities.
- Rendering details: verified internal resolution, dynamic-resolution behavior, reconstruction method and anti-aliasing.
- Scene: location, camera, weather, time, gameplay state and route.
- Performance: target, measurement window, range, frame pacing and visible hitches.
- Image findings: texture, geometry, shadows, reflections, effects and motion artifacts.
- Evidence labels: mark each important value as official, measured, observed or unverified.
When two modes prioritize different outcomes, present the trade-off directly: one may offer higher image quality or more effects while the other maintains a steadier frame rate. Technical delivery does not determine artistic direction, gameplay quality or which version a reader will prefer.

Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them
Comparing different scenes
Problem: One version is shown in a dark interior and the other in a busy outdoor area. Correction: synchronize the location, camera and state, or disclose that the scenes are not directly comparable.
Using one screenshot as the verdict
Problem: A still hides shimmer, ghosting, pacing and responsiveness. Correction: pair matched stills with synchronized moving footage.
Calling output resolution native
Problem: A 4K signal is treated as proof of a 4K internal render. Correction: report output and internal values in separate fields and identify reconstruction.
Calling a target a stable frame rate
Problem: “60 FPS mode” is repeated as if every frame arrives on time. Correction: provide a measured sequence, range, pacing notes and stress events.
Calling a preset equivalent to a console
Problem: “High” or “Ultra” is assumed to reproduce console settings. Correction: list individual settings and explain whether the PC configuration is a match attempt or a high-end showcase.
Ignoring the display pipeline
Problem: HDR, VRR or picture processing differs between platforms. Correction: use the same display and matched settings, or disclose every material difference.
Filling unknowns with conventional numbers
Problem: An estimated resolution or FPS is presented as fact. Correction: use “unknown” or “not verified,” name the available evidence and stop there.

Software capture can complicate comparisons when the GPU performs image scaling. NVIDIA notes that software capture may record the lower pre-upscaled resolution rather than the target output. If preserving an exact signal is important, a dedicated capture device can avoid that particular limitation. The cited examples include the Elgato 4K60 PRO MK.2 and AVerMedia Live Gamer 4K; the source identifies 4K60 capture, so do not infer support for higher frame rates or current product availability from that mention.
Capture hardware is not required for a fair method. A controlled display, repeatable scene, transparent settings log and honest evidence labels matter more than a particular recorder.
What the final verdict should say
End with the trade-off supported by your evidence, not a universal ranking. A defensible conclusion might state that one version delivered higher verified image quality or more effects in the tested mode, while another maintained steadier frame pacing or responsiveness. State the scene, mode and display conditions that limit the conclusion, and keep artistic preference separate from technical delivery.
