How to Compare Gadget Features That Matter—and Skip the Ones You Won’t Use

Compare gadgets by starting with the job you need done, not the length of a feature list. Set a few must-haves, check whether your existing devices can use each feature, and compare the full cost and ownership terms. Once the candidates meet your real requirements, choose the one that offers the most useful performance for your budget—not the most impressive spec sheet.

Start with the job, not the gadget

Write down what the device needs to do and the conditions in which you will use it. A phone used for frequent photography has different priorities from one used mainly for messages. Consider how often you will use it, how long you expect to keep it, where it needs to fit, and what it must work with. New Zealand Consumer Protection advises shoppers to consider function, frequency of use, expected lifespan, budget, fit and compatibility before choosing (Before you buy).

Turn that job into a short list of requirements that could change your decision. Depending on the gadget, these might include compatibility with equipment you already own, an accessibility function, enough battery life for your routine, or dimensions that fit a particular space. These are examples, not universal requirements. Decide in advance what you could give up to pay less.

Separate must-haves from useful extras

Mark each possible feature as a must-have, a useful extra, or something you do not expect to use. Keep the must-have list short: if everything is essential, it will not help you compare. A must-have is a requirement that rules out a candidate when it is missing; an extra improves the experience but does not prevent the device from doing its main job.

  • Must-have: The device cannot meet your main need without it.
  • Useful extra: It would make a task easier or better, but you could still use the device without it.
  • Low priority: You have no clear situation in which you would use it, or it adds complexity without a benefit you value.

Do this before settling on model names. It helps prevent a larger number of features from making a product seem automatically better when several of those features do not serve your routine.

Translate specifications into everyday outcomes

For each specification, ask what it lets you do, whether you will notice the difference in your setting, and whether your other equipment supports it. A newer standard or higher number can be a real improvement in one setup and irrelevant in another.

For example, Consumer Reports says Wi-Fi 7 may help a household with many devices competing for the network, while a less expensive Wi-Fi 6 router may be adequate if most connected devices are older and cannot take advantage of Wi-Fi 7 (How to Get More for Your Money When Shopping for TVs and Other Tech Items, 22 April 2025). The useful comparison is not simply which router has the newer label; it is whether your network and devices can use the capability and whether it addresses a problem you actually have.

Compare the differences you will notice

After removing candidates that fail a must-have, compare the remaining differences by their practical effect. Which factors matter depends on the device and your routine; there is no universal ranking for gadgets across categories.

  • Task performance: Does it handle the work you care about well enough?
  • Compatibility and fit: Will it work with your devices, services and available space?
  • Ease of use: Will the controls, setup and everyday operation suit the people using it?
  • Ownership: Is there useful evidence about expected lifespan, support or repair options? For devices that consume power or have safety considerations, include those concerns too.
  • Use frequency: Is a feature likely to improve something you do often, or only an occasional task?

A feature that rarely gets used, or that adds setup friction, may deserve less weight than a simpler capability you rely on every day.

Compare the full cost and terms

Look beyond the displayed product price. The Federal Trade Commission recommends finding the total cost and reading the full product description and deal terms. Depending on the purchase, check delivery, handling, taxes or fees, the item’s condition, return and refund terms, warranty coverage, and likely running costs.

Two gadgets with similar headline features can be different purchases once those costs and terms are included. Put the costs that apply to your situation in the comparison, rather than assuming the lowest listed price is the lowest total cost.

Use reviews as evidence, not a verdict

Do not rely on star ratings alone. The FTC advises looking across several sources and considering who wrote a review and whether incentives may be involved. A rating can help identify questions to investigate, but it does not show whether a product suits your particular must-haves.

Where independent testing or needs-based filters are available, check what they assess. Which? says its Best Buy titles draw on independent lab tests and expert assessments, and describes filters designed to help shoppers find products for their needs (Shopping tips: How Which? reviews help you spot brilliant products, 2 November 2023). A test or rating is most useful when its criteria match the tasks and trade-offs you care about.

Build a comparison that makes the trade-off visible

Use a small table rather than trying to remember every spec. List must-haves as rows and candidate models as columns; add the full price, a note on evidence or uncertainty, and whether you expect to use each headline extra. The example below is a decision aid, not a universal scoring system.

What to compare Candidate A Candidate B
Must-have 1 Meets / does not meet Meets / does not meet
Must-have 2 Meets / does not meet Meets / does not meet
Full cost and terms Price plus applicable costs; return and warranty terms Price plus applicable costs; return and warranty terms
Evidence or uncertainty What supports the claim, and what remains unclear? What supports the claim, and what remains unclear?
Headline extra Would I use it? When? Would I use it? When?
  1. Remove any candidate that fails a genuine must-have.
  2. For the rest, compare useful performance, full cost and terms.
  3. For each prominent extra, name a real situation in which you would use it. If you cannot, give it little weight in the decision.
  4. Choose the remaining option with the best combination of useful performance and total cost for your needs.

Before buying, confirm specifications, availability, compatibility and support details for the exact model and market you are considering; these can vary by product and region.
