The dependable way to match foundation in a new brand is to use a shade you already know works as a reference, compare depth and undertone separately, then test a short list on your jaw or face in daylight after the formula settles. Shade names, numbers and letters are brand-specific, so an online conversion is a starting point—not proof of an exact match.
This method accounts for the variables that make cross-brand matching difficult: different shade systems, formula-specific color, camera and lighting limits, coverage, finish and changes that appear as a product dries or wears.

What to compare first: depth, undertone and the finished formula
Start with the foundation that currently looks right on your face, not with a shade label you remember from another brand. Write down its brand, exact product or formula, shade name or number, undertone description if provided, and the market where you bought it. A shade system can differ between formulas within the same company, and the same name or number does not create a universal color code. Ulta explains that labels vary across brands and recommends using undertone information as a comparison aid; MAC’s shade-finder guidance also notes that color can vary between foundation formulas. Ulta’s undertone guide and the MAC Foundation Shade Finder are useful references for those limitations.
For each candidate in the new brand, ask four separate questions:

- Is the depth (how light or deep it appears) close?
- Is the undertone—such as warm, cool, neutral or a more specific description—compatible?
- Will the new formula’s coverage and finish make the color appear different on the face?
- Does it still match after it settles and under the light in which you normally wear it?
Only a candidate that survives all four checks should be treated as a likely match.
1. Create a trustworthy reference shade
Record the exact product, not just the brand
“Medium neutral” is not enough information to transfer a shade. Record the full product name, formula or finish, shade spelling or number, and the country or market of purchase. If you own more than one bottle, identify the one that matches your face now. A product can look different from another formula carrying a similar label, so the formula belongs in your reference record.
Check the season and your normal preparation
Use a reference shade that works in the season and skin condition you are trying to match. Note whether you normally apply moisturizer, sunscreen or primer before foundation, because the new product should be tested over the same preparation. This does not turn the reference into a permanent skin measurement; it simply makes the comparison fair. If your current foundation is an unusually good match only after mixing or adjusting it, record that fact instead of treating either component as a standalone answer.
Confirm that the reference actually matches your face
Before transferring a shade, check the reference along the jaw and onto the face in daylight. A color that looks acceptable on a hand or wrist may not match facial depth or undertone. Revlon specifically advises using the jaw or face rather than those areas and checking in daylight. Revlon’s foundation-matching guide describes this test.
2. Separate depth from undertone
Depth is the lightness or darkness dimension
Depth answers whether a color is broadly too light, too deep or close in lightness. Compare candidates within the new brand’s own range rather than assuming that a number such as 3, 30 or 300 has the same meaning elsewhere. A shade can have the correct depth but still look visibly wrong because its undertone differs.

Undertone controls the color cast
Undertone describes the persistent hue beneath the surface appearance. Brands may use warm, cool and neutral, or narrower terms such as golden, rosy or olive. Use the undertone description attached to your known formula as evidence, then compare how the new brand defines its own categories. Ulta recommends comparing a known formula’s undertone description before assessing depth. See Ulta’s explanation of undertones.
In practical terms, a shade can be the right lightness and still read too pink, yellow, red or gray on your face. Do not “correct” that difference by choosing a much lighter or deeper shade; first look for a closer undertone at a similar depth.

Shade names are internal naming conventions. Two brands can use “Ivory,” “Beige,” “Sand,” “Neutral” or the same number for colors that are not interchangeable. Even within one brand, formulas can have different pigments, finishes or shade layouts. A cross-brand tool may propose a correspondence, but the label is a candidate identifier, not a measurement.
3. Build a shortlist with cross-brand tools
Once you have your reference details, use a finder to reduce the number of shades you must test. Ulta describes a Shade-to-Shade Finder that maps a shade from one brand to another. MAC provides cross-brand guidance, and Catrice advertises a tool that compares a current brand and shade with its own range. Tool coverage and available shade catalogs can change, so enter the exact product and shade rather than a generic brand name. Keep two or three adjacent results when possible: the suggested shade, one slightly lighter or deeper option, and the nearest undertone alternative. A shortlist is more useful than a single result because it lets a face test reveal whether the error is depth or undertone.

4. Test candidates on the jaw and face
Use samples or an in-store test when available. If you are testing at home, use clean, normally prepared skin and enough product to represent the coverage you intend to wear. Revlon’s guidance recommends the face or jaw, daylight and avoiding hand or wrist swatches. Read the full face-testing guidance.
- Prepare consistently. Cleanse or follow your normal routine, then apply the same moisturizer, sunscreen or primer used with the reference shade. Allow skincare to settle so excess sheen does not distort your judgment.
- Place narrow swatches. Draw separate strips from the lower cheek across the jaw toward the neck. Keep each strip wide enough to see but separated from the next. Include the face area where you want the foundation to disappear, not only the center of the hand.
- Test adjacent options together. Put the closest depth, the next lighter or deeper shade and the closest undertone alternative side by side. Testing together makes relative differences easier to see.
- Inspect the transition. Look at the cheek-to-jaw and jaw-to-neck transition. The best candidate should blend into surrounding skin without a conspicuous edge; a stripe that looks correct only on the cheek but mismatches the neck needs another check.
- Move into daylight. Check near a window or outdoors without direct glare. Artificial indoor lighting can hide a pink, yellow, red or gray cast. Keep the light consistent when comparing candidates.
- Let the swatches settle. Do not choose while the product is still wet. Ulta recommends allowing swatches to settle, and Revlon notes that some formulas can appear deeper or warmer over time. MAC also advises allowing time before deciding whether oxidation is a concern. Ulta, Revlon and MAC each address this waiting step.
- Recheck in your real setting. After settling, view the result in the light where you normally wear makeup. If the candidate changes notably, judge the settled color rather than the first wet appearance.
5. Diagnose a mismatch instead of guessing
Use the appearance after settling to decide what to change. The table below keeps depth and undertone separate.

If every candidate is wrong in a different way, the honest outcome may be that the new brand or formula does not offer a suitable match. Do not force the nearest label into an “exact” conversion.
6. Account for formula, coverage and finish
Color is only one part of how a foundation appears. A full-coverage formula can leave a more uniform block of pigment than a sheer one; a luminous finish can reflect light differently from a matte finish. These are visual differences, not evidence that your undertone changed. Compare candidates at the coverage and application amount you actually intend to use.

- Use a similar application tool and number of layers.
- Compare the new product after it has set for the same amount of time as the reference.
- Check whether the color looks different where the formula is thin at the edges versus built up in the center.
- Record the finish and coverage beside the shade so a later test does not mistake a formula difference for a color difference.

7. Understand what online and photo finders actually measure
Inputs and lighting limit the result
Digital finders depend on the shade catalog, the product version and the information you enter. Photo-based systems add camera, white-balance and lighting variables. One third-party service says it samples cheek, forehead and jaw areas, converts an average to CIE L*a*b* color values and compares shades with the CIEDE2000 color-distance calculation. It also instructs users to face the camera, use daylight and avoid filters. Those details describe that service’s own method and claims, not independent proof that its result is accurate for every phone or skin tone. Read the service’s method description.
Why a technically precise color distance is not a wear guarantee
A numerical color-distance comparison can rank swatches that are close under the captured conditions. It cannot fully represent how a formula changes as it dries, how coverage alters the appearance, or how a shade looks in your everyday lighting. Treat a digital result as a way to reduce shopping time, then verify it with physical swatches.
What current academic work establishes
A 2024 preprint describes an image-analysis approach for predicting skin-with-foundation color from an unmade-up selfie and an image of a foundation shade. Its publication shows that computational matching is an active technical problem; it does not establish that consumer shade finders guarantee a correct match. Read the 2024 arXiv preprint.

Revlon states that ColorStay Longwear Makeup SPF 15 is offered in 43 shades across cool, warm and neutral families. That makes it a useful example of a range organized by both depth and undertone, but it does not convert any shade automatically to another brand. Suppose your current foundation is a dependable neutral medium. A finder may return a neutral medium in this range, plus nearby warm and cool choices. Test all relevant candidates on the jaw, wait for settling, and choose the one whose depth, undertone and finished formula disappear most naturally. The example demonstrates the process; it is not a recommendation that one product suits every wearer.
9. A repeatable comparison worksheet
Write one line for every candidate so your decision is based on observations rather than memory.

This record is especially useful when comparing samples on different days or when your reference foundation is no longer available in the same market.
10. Common mistakes and their fixes
- Choosing by the number alone: compare depth and undertone because numbering conventions differ.
- Using a hand or wrist swatch as the final test: move the test to the jaw and face, then inspect in daylight.
- Deciding while the product is wet: wait for the formula to settle and judge the later appearance.
- Testing only one finder result: keep adjacent depth and undertone candidates for a side-by-side test.
- Ignoring formula changes: compare coverage, finish and application amount as well as pigment color.
- Photographing under filters or mixed lighting: use unfiltered daylight if a photo tool requires an image.
- Calling the nearest available shade exact: if all options fail a face test, accept that the formula may not have a suitable match.
11. When to repeat the comparison
Repeat the process when you change foundation formula, move to a different market’s shade catalog, or need a shade for a different season. Keep the same reference details and testing conditions so a new result can be compared with the old one. If a product repeatedly looks deeper or warmer after settling, record that behavior and use the settled appearance as your baseline for future candidates.
The goal is not to find a universal shade number. It is to document a reference, narrow the field intelligently, and verify the actual formula on the part of your face where it must disappear.
