A headline delivery fee, a “free delivery” badge, or a lower-looking menu price can all be misleading when service fees, small-order charges, taxes, tips, menu markups, or membership conditions are added later.
Use the method below to compare the restaurant’s own ordering channel, delivery apps, and pickup on equal terms. Record the item subtotal separately, then compare every order-level charge and the final pre-payment total for your location, account, and date.

What a fair comparison includes
Start with one question: How much will this exact order cost me through each available channel? That amount is not the menu subtotal and it is not the displayed delivery fee. It is the total shown at the last screen before you submit payment, after eligible discounts and the tip you actually intend to leave.

For each option, record these components separately:
#1 Best Overall
- Get thousands of restaurants, convenience stores, pet stores, grocery stores, gifts, and more at your fingertips.
- Easy ordering, order customizations, and real-time tracking
- Pickup, group order, and scheduled delivery options available
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
- Item subtotal: the prices of the food and drinks before order-level fees, tax, discounts, and tip.
- Delivery or pickup charge: a delivery fee, or any pickup-related charge shown by the channel.
- Service fee: a platform or order-processing charge, often calculated differently from the delivery fee.
- Conditional charges: small-order, long-distance, regulatory-response, weather-impact, express, bag, bottle, or other fees that appear only for some orders.
- Taxes: the amount calculated for the selected location and items.
- Discounts: restaurant coupons, platform promotions, membership benefits, or other credits that you are actually eligible to use.
- Tip: include the same intended tip basis in every delivery comparison. Pickup should be compared with the tip you would leave for pickup, if any.
- Final total: the amount due before payment, including every mandatory charge and your chosen tip.
A useful worksheet formula is final total = item subtotal + mandatory fees + taxes + intended tip - eligible discounts. Keep a subscription’s cost separate until you decide whether to allocate part of it to this order.
Build an identical basket first
A price difference is meaningful only when the underlying order is the same. Before opening multiple apps, choose one restaurant location and write down the basket in detail.
Fix the restaurant and location
- Enter the same delivery address, or select the same pickup store, in every channel.
- Confirm the street address or store identifier displayed in the menu. A nearby branch can have different prices, taxes, delivery distance, inventory, or promotions.
- Use the same service type. Compare delivery with delivery and pickup with pickup; do not treat a pickup subtotal as a delivery quote.
Match names, sizes, and customizations
Record the exact item name, size, quantity, protein or flavor choice, side, drink, sauce, add-on, and removal. A combo and its individual components may have different prices. Even a size change or an extra dipping sauce can erase a platform’s apparent savings.

Save the basket before applying deals
First capture the undiscounted item subtotal in each channel. Then apply promotions. This separates a genuine menu-price difference from a temporary coupon and makes the comparison reproducible when a promotion expires.
| Basket detail to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Restaurant name and exact location | Prices, taxes, distance, inventory, and fees can change by branch. |
| Item names and sizes | Similar-looking items are not necessarily equivalent. |
| Quantities | Order-size fees and discounts can change with quantity. |
| Customizations and add-ons | Options may carry different charges on different channels. |
| Delivery address or pickup store | Determines distance, availability, taxes, and service type. |
Check the restaurant’s own channel against delivery apps
When the restaurant offers an app or website, use its menu and checkout as a reference rather than assuming a delivery marketplace has the same item prices. Restaurant operators set the menu prices shown on DoorDash’s marketplace, and some partners may include restaurant staff, bag, related restaurant, or government-required fees. That means an app price is not automatically the same as the in-store or direct-order price.
Rank #2
- A huge selection fulfilling all your needs - food and more!
- Easy ordering & real-time tracking
- Customize your orders
- Pickup & group order options
- Physical gift cards are delivered active via mail.
Open the restaurant’s direct ordering page and the third-party channels in separate tabs or windows. Select the same branch and service type, then enter the identical basket. Compare the item subtotal before looking at delivery charges. If a direct channel lists a different item price, record that difference explicitly; do not attribute it to a delivery fee.
What menu-price parity does and does not prove
- If item subtotals match, the channels have price parity for that basket at that moment. Fees can still make the final totals different.
- If item subtotals differ, the cheaper subtotal is not necessarily the cheaper order. Add all fees, taxes, tip, and discounts first.
- If an item is unavailable on one channel, do not substitute a different item and call the result an apples-to-apples comparison. Mark that channel as not comparable for this basket or rebuild the basket with an item available everywhere.
Understand each fee instead of treating “delivery” as one charge
Platforms can show several charges that appear only after you enter an address or build a cart. Read the fee details while the cart is open and again at checkout; the final screen is the controlling figure for your order.

DoorDash says its delivery fee varies by merchant but is fixed for a particular order. Its service fee varies and, under a structure that began rolling out across most of the United States on July 23, 2026, can reflect distance and order size. DoorDash says a long-distance fee continues to apply to a small number of deliveries, typically those more than 10 miles away.
The initial rollout excluded California, Chicago, Colorado, the District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York City, Puerto Rico, and Seattle. A checkout in one of those areas may therefore use a different structure from a checkout elsewhere. DoorDash also says actual fees vary by order and that fee reductions are not guaranteed.
Possible additional DoorDash charges include small-order, regulatory-response, weather-impact, and optional express fees, along with estimated tax, an optional tip, and legally required bag, bottle, or other fees. The company says this list may change. Treat the live fee breakdown for your address and basket as authoritative rather than relying on a remembered fee schedule.

DoorDash has described reduced fees for eligible DashPass orders, but a membership benefit does not establish that every member order is cheapest. Remaining service fees, minimums, taxes, eligibility rules, and the subscription cost can outweigh a reduced delivery charge.
Uber Eats information cited for the United Kingdom
An Uber Eats help page cited for this comparison says delivery fees vary by location, service fees vary with order size, and a small-order fee may apply below a threshold set by the restaurant. Those details are from the United Kingdom and should not be presented as a United States fee schedule. If you are elsewhere, use the terms and checkout displayed for your country.
Why the displayed fee can change
Distance, order size, merchant settings, weather, local requirements, service type, account eligibility, and current promotions can all affect the total. A fee shown on a restaurant page before an address is entered may be an estimate or a starting value. Enter the address and complete the basket before recording it.
Use the last screen before payment as the comparison point
Follow the same sequence for every channel. Do not stop when the cart first shows a delivery fee.
- Confirm the address and restaurant branch. Check the displayed delivery estimate or pickup store.
- Verify the basket. Compare names, sizes, quantities, customizations, and add-ons line by line.
- Record the item subtotal. Take a screenshot or copy the amount into a worksheet before discounts.
- Open the fee details. Expand any link such as “see fees,” “price details,” or “taxes” and list each charge separately.
- Apply only eligible promotions. Read the minimum spend, participating-store, expiry, stacking, and payment conditions.
- Check membership treatment. Confirm whether the order qualifies for reduced delivery or another benefit and note fees that remain.
- Set the same tip policy. Enter the tip you genuinely intend to leave, or record totals both with and without tip if you are still deciding.
- Record taxes and the final total. Stop at the screen immediately before payment; do not place the order merely to reveal a later amount.
- Timestamp the result. Save the date, approximate time, location, account or membership status, and promotion code or name.

Compare delivery with pickup on its own terms
Pickup is a separate decision, not a cheaper delivery quote. Build the same basket for pickup at the same branch and capture its complete total. Pickup may remove a delivery charge but can still have different menu pricing, taxes, service charges, or promotions. Conversely, a delivery promotion can make delivery competitive for a particular order.

Use one of these clear comparisons:
- Delivery versus delivery: same restaurant, address, basket, tip policy, and account conditions.
- Pickup versus pickup: same restaurant branch, basket, pickup time or window, and tip policy.
- Delivery versus pickup: label the service difference and compare the final convenience-adjusted totals rather than claiming one channel has a lower delivery fee.
Evaluate promotions and memberships mathematically
A promotion changes the order only if its conditions fit your basket. Check the minimum subtotal, eligible restaurants, excluded items, expiry time, payment method, geographic limits, and whether it can be combined with another offer. A large percentage discount may apply only to selected items, while a fixed credit may be capped.
For a membership, calculate the cost over the period you will actually keep it. A simple allocation is subscription cost per eligible order = subscription price for the period ÷ number of eligible orders in that period. Then add that allocated amount to the member order when comparing it with a non-member option. The break-even point cannot be universal because it depends on your order frequency, eligible merchants, minimums, remaining service fees, and current terms.
Do not infer a lowest total from a “$0 delivery” label. Confirm the order minimum, service fee, taxes, tip, eligibility, and subscription cost on the final screen.

A spreadsheet makes repeated comparisons faster and prevents memory errors. Create one row per channel and columns for location, date, service type, item subtotal, delivery charge, service fee, conditional fees, tax, discount, tip, membership allocation, and final amount. Add a notes column for unavailable items, unusual requirements, or promotion terms.
Capture evidence without placing the order
- Take screenshots of the basket and expanded fee breakdown, making sure the restaurant location and date are visible elsewhere in your notes.
- Save the promotion’s written conditions, not just the banner headline.
- Record whether you were signed in, enrolled in a membership, or using a guest checkout.
- Delete or obscure payment details and personal address information before sharing screenshots.
Because prices and fees change, a comparison is a time-stamped snapshot. Recheck before ordering if more than a short time has passed, if the delivery address changes, or if the platform has announced a fee update.

Diagnose common mismatches
| What you see | Likely reason | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| One app has a higher item subtotal | Restaurant or platform menu pricing differs by channel. | Compare the exact item, size, customization, and branch; do not label the difference a delivery fee. |
| A “free delivery” order still costs more | Service, small-order, tax, tip, or other fees remain. | Expand every fee line and compare the final total. |
| The fee changes after entering the address | Distance, local rules, merchant settings, or service availability affected the quote. | Use the address-specific checkout amount. |
| A promotion is missing | The basket, store, account, date, or payment method is ineligible. | Read the offer conditions and confirm the code or benefit was applied. |
| Two nearby stores show different totals | Branches can have separate menus, taxes, inventory, and delivery distances. | Select one exact branch in every channel. |
| Pickup looks cheaper than delivery | The services include different charges and possibly different promotions. | Keep the comparison labeled as pickup versus delivery and include the same tip policy. |
| A membership order is not the lowest | Reduced delivery does not remove all fees, and the subscription has a cost. | Compare the complete member total and allocate the subscription cost over eligible orders. |
Interpret fee-transparency claims carefully
The Federal Trade Commission’s 2026 inquiry into online fee practices identifies total price, the nature and purpose of fees, variable or contingent fees, restrictions, online-versus-restaurant item prices, personalized pricing, promotion conditions, and additional payments as relevant transparency questions. The inquiry sought comments on whether a rule is needed; it is not a finalized nationwide food-delivery rule.
An FTC consumer alert frames two practical questions: “Do they clearly display the total price of the items you order?” and “Do they tell you if prices are higher online than they are in the store?” Use those questions as a checklist, while remembering that the final total still depends on your location, basket, account, and selected service.
FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Christopher Mufarrige said, “Online grocery fees that are unclear, inconsistently disclosed, or revealed only at the last moment before consumers make a purchase distort competition and harm consumers.” That statement concerned online grocery fees; it should not be read as a finding specifically about fast-food delivery.
How to make a quick decision when you are ready to order
After completing the worksheet, choose the option with the lowest final total that also meets your practical requirements. If totals are close, consider delivery time, cancellation terms, support, and whether a restaurant-direct order sends the money through the channel you prefer—but keep those as separate service considerations rather than changing the price calculation.
- Reject any comparison that uses a different restaurant branch or a materially different basket.
- Reject any comparison that stops at a delivery-fee badge instead of the pre-payment total.
- Confirm that the discount and membership benefit are genuinely eligible for this order.
- Choose delivery or pickup consistently with what you need.
- Save the final total and conditions if you expect to reorder the same basket later.
DoorDash said its own analysis of a sample of relevant markets found that more than 70% of recent orders would have had the same or lower fees under its July 2026 model, with a median saving of $0.78 per order. Those are DoorDash’s company-published estimates, not an independent industry statistic; the company also says actual fees vary, individual results differ, and fee reductions are not guaranteed. Your checkout total remains the only reliable result for your order.
What to recheck as platforms change
Fee structures, rollout regions, menu prices, and promotions are not permanent. Recheck the live checkout when a platform changes its fee model, when you cross a state or country boundary, when a restaurant changes locations or ownership, or when you switch between a guest account and a membership account.
For United States comparisons, note whether your address is in one of the areas excluded from a platform’s initial rollout. For United Kingdom comparisons, do not import United States assumptions into the Uber Eats fee information described above. Always state the country, city or region, restaurant branch, date, service type, and account conditions when sharing a comparison with someone else.
