To compare international money-transfer offers, use the same amount, currencies, funding method and payout method for each quote. Then compare the amount the recipient is expected to receive—not just the advertised transfer fee. A provider may charge little or no explicit fee while building a margin into its exchange rate.
Compare like with like
Prices can change with the transfer route, amount, payment channel and delivery option. Get quotes close together, using matching details, so a difference reflects the offers rather than different assumptions.

- Amount and currencies: Enter the same amount to send and the same source and destination currencies.
- Destination and payout: Use the same destination country and payout type, such as a bank account or cash pickup, where available.
- Funding method: Match how you pay, such as by bank transfer or card. A provider may charge different fees for different payment methods.
- Delivery speed: Compare the same delivery timing. A faster option may have a different price or availability.
If a provider cannot support the method or timing you need for that route, its price may not be a useful comparison.
Compare the recipient amount, rate and fees
Record the amount each provider says the recipient will get, the quoted exchange rate and every fee shown. A comparison interface such as Wise’s comparison page illustrates the kinds of fields to look for—exchange rate, total fees and recipient amount—but it is provider-authored information, not evidence that Wise is cheapest for every transfer.

To understand the exchange-rate margin, compare the provider’s quoted rate with a reference rate, such as the mid-market rate, at roughly the same time. The difference helps show the cost built into conversion; it is not necessarily a separate fee. Wise explains the mid-market rate, and its fee guidance describes variables that can affect its own pricing. Treat those pages as explanations, not as an independent ranking of providers.
Include the sender’s payment fee as well as the transfer fee. If an intermediary, correspondent or receiving bank may deduct money, account for that separately. The amount displayed as expected for the recipient may not include every third-party charge or tax, depending on the transaction and applicable rules.

Use this worksheet for each quote
- Amount sent and source currency
- Destination country and receiving currency
- Funding method and any payment-channel fee
- Quoted exchange rate and when the quote expires
- Explicit transfer fee
- Recipient’s expected amount and payout method
- Any disclosed intermediary or receiving-bank deductions—or whether they remain uncertain
- Estimated arrival time and whether speed changes the rate or fee
Compare total cost and recipient amount together. If a deduction is unknown or the rate is not guaranteed, do not present the estimate as exact. A quote is time-sensitive: exchange rates move, and providers can vary their offers by route, amount and payment method. Check when the rate expires or is locked, and confirm the final terms before sending.

Check for charges beyond the provider’s fee
Some transfers can involve charges from intermediary or recipient banks, in addition to the sending provider’s stated fees. Ask whether the displayed recipient amount accounts for those deductions and whether the payout method affects them.

Rules differ by jurisdiction and transaction type. In the United States, the CFPB’s Regulation E remittance-transfer guidance describes pre-payment disclosures for covered transfers, including the exchange rate and the amount expected to reach the recipient. Certain third-party fees or taxes may not be included in that amount. This framework does not apply everywhere or to every transfer.
For the United Kingdom, the FCA’s Consumer Duty guidance discusses transparency about overall cost, exchange-rate markups and possible intermediary or recipient-bank charges. It is UK regulator guidance, not a universal rule.

Use benchmarks as context, not as your personal price
The World Bank’s Remittance Prices Worldwide page displayed a global average cost of 6.36% and listed August 18, 2025, as its last update. That is a dataset benchmark, not a quote for a particular customer or transfer. The World Bank’s data-catalog metadata, updated September 28, 2026, describes coverage of 377 corridors from 48 sending countries to 111 receiving countries over 2011–2025. The catalog says non-transparent services are excluded from its global average calculation, so that average does not represent every service.

The World Bank’s Q3 2025 report excerpt found that card funding was the cheapest funding method at 4.39% in that period’s recorded sample, while sending to a bank account averaged 7.86%. These are period- and sample-specific aggregate findings, not current offers or a universal ranking. Your own route, payment method and quote may differ.

The World Bank also states that cutting prices by at least 5 percentage points can save up to $16 billion a year. That is a broad published estimate, not a promise about the savings on an individual transfer.
