To compare energy funds, start with each fund’s mandate and benchmark, then check what it actually owns, how concentrated those holdings are, what the fund costs to own and trade, and how its risks compare over the same time period. A fund’s name alone does not tell you whether it owns the same companies, follows the same index, or carries the same risks as another energy fund.
Energy funds can be concentrated in one sector and a relatively small number of issuers, while also being exposed to volatile energy markets. Treat holdings, expenses, and risk statistics as dated snapshots: use current prospectuses and holdings reports, and align dates and measurement periods before drawing comparisons.

What to compare before choosing an energy fund
A useful comparison separates five questions that are easy to blur together:
- Mandate and benchmark: What is the fund designed to track or hold?
- Actual holdings: Which issuers and energy businesses does it own now?
- Concentration: How much of the portfolio is in its largest positions and subsectors?
- Costs: What are the annual operating expenses, and what might trading add?
- Risk: How exposed is the fund to sector, issuer, market, and benchmark-related fluctuations?
These are related but not interchangeable. Two funds can both be labeled “energy” while following different indexes or using different construction rules. A fund with many holdings is not necessarily well diversified if a few issuers dominate its assets. A low expense ratio does not remove concentration or market risk, and a single volatility statistic cannot summarize every way a fund may lose value.

How to compare an energy fund’s mandate and benchmark
Read the objective and index description
Begin with the fund’s prospectus, not just its name or marketing summary. Identify whether it seeks to track an index, generally correspond to an index, or follow an active mandate. Then note what the benchmark includes: its market-cap range, geography, industry classification, and any weighting or constituent-selection rules stated in the fund materials.
For example, Vanguard says VDE seeks to track the MSCI US Investable Market Energy 25/50 Index, which covers large-, mid-, and small-cap U.S. energy stocks classified under GICS. Its prospectus describes an objective of tracking an energy-stock benchmark. State Street says XLE seeks results corresponding generally, before expenses, to publicly traded securities in the Energy Select Sector Index. Global X’s April 1, 2026 summary prospectus describes GXPE’s objective as tied to the MSCI USA Energy Index. Those descriptions show why the label “energy fund” is not a complete statement of exposure; they do not establish that the funds are interchangeable or represent every available strategy. Read the VDE summary prospectus, Vanguard’s VDE product page, XLE prospectus, and GXPE summary prospectus for the specific descriptions and dates.
Understand what benchmark differences mean
Different indexes may select or weight companies differently, so funds bearing the same broad sector label can have different constituents and exposures. A benchmark that includes large-, mid-, and small-cap stocks, for instance, defines a different opportunity set from a benchmark whose rules produce another mix. Do not infer that one is broader, safer, or better from the index name alone; inspect the rules and holdings.

For a fair comparison, write down each fund’s mandate and benchmark next to the date you reviewed its prospectus. If a fund is actively managed, describe its stated mandate rather than pretending it tracks a benchmark it does not follow. If it does track an index, compare performance and risk with that relevant index as well as with any peer fund you consider. Comparing a fund to an unrelated broad-market index may obscure what its strategy is intended to do.
How to compare holdings and concentration
Look beyond the total number of holdings
Holdings count is a starting point, not a diversification score. Vanguard’s product page reported 111 VDE holdings as of August 31, 2026. That is a dated count for one fund; it does not tell you how much the largest companies represent, whether multiple holdings are exposed to similar business risks, or how the fund compares with another fund on the same date.
For each fund, collect its current holdings file or portfolio disclosure and note:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- The largest positions and their individual portfolio weights.
- The combined weight of the largest positions, using the same cutoff for each fund.
- Exposure by subsector, where reported, such as integrated energy, exploration and production, refining, services, or other businesses.
- Whether the fund’s holdings and weighting approach match the mandate and index description.
- The “as of” date of the holdings snapshot.
A concentrated top group can make a fund’s results especially sensitive to a few issuers even when the total holdings count looks large. Similarly, several companies may operate in different subsectors yet remain exposed to common energy-price or supply-demand conditions. Holdings analysis therefore needs both issuer weights and the kinds of businesses represented.

Check for concentration risks in the fund documents
Prospectuses explain risks that the holdings count cannot capture. State Street’s XLE filing says that concentrating assets in energy makes the fund more affected by energy-sector performance than a more diversified fund. The same filing identifies energy-price and supply-demand fluctuations as factors affecting energy issuers and notes that commodity markets can be significantly volatile. Vanguard’s fact sheet warns that sector and non-diversification risks may cause more extreme performance fluctuations than the overall stock market. See the XLE filing and Vanguard fact sheet.
Fund construction can add another layer. Invesco describes its energy fund as investing solely in the energy sector and potentially holding a limited number of securities, meaning a change in one holding’s value could significantly affect the investment’s value. That is a useful reminder to look for both sector concentration and issuer concentration in the prospectus. The Invesco Energy Fund page is one example of such a disclosure; it should not be treated as a description of every energy fund.
How to compare expense ratios and trading costs
Start with annual operating expenses
Use each fund’s current prospectus to compare its total annual operating expenses, often expressed as an expense ratio. Confirm whether the disclosed figure is before or after a fee waiver or reimbursement, and whether that waiver is in effect for the period stated. A waiver can affect the cost shown to investors, so the headline number should not be separated from its terms.
The following figures come from prospectuses with different dates and should not be read as a synchronized ranking:

| Fund | Disclosed total annual operating expenses | Disclosure date and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| VDE | 0.09% | Vanguard summary prospectus dated December 19, 2025, supplemented June 30, 2026; see the prospectus. |
| XLE | 0.08% | State Street 2026 prospectus; see the filing. |
| GXPE | 0.15% after fee waiver and/or reimbursement | Global X summary prospectus dated April 1, 2026; see the prospectus. |
These are date-specific examples, not a current market ranking. Recheck each latest prospectus and any applicable waiver before relying on a figure. The SEC’s fee research report explains that fund disclosures cover objectives, risks, fees, and other attributes, but the disclosure requirements it discusses do not require comparative fee information. In practice, that means investors may need to compare prospectuses themselves rather than expect a standardized “cheapest versus peers” table.
An expense ratio is an annual fund operating cost, not a bill that necessarily arrives as a separate invoice. As a simple illustration of scale, 0.09% of $10,000 is $9 over a year, before investment changes and any other costs. That arithmetic does not predict an account’s exact result or make two funds with different mandates directly comparable.
Account for costs outside the expense ratio
Operating expenses do not capture every cost of buying or selling ETF shares. VDE’s prospectus says brokerage fees vary. Investors may also face bid-ask spreads, and an ETF can trade above or below its net asset value (NAV). State Street says XLE shares trade at market prices that may differ from NAV. These points are stated in the VDE prospectus and XLE prospectus.

When comparing ETF costs, record the expense ratio separately from trading costs rather than combining them into a made-up single figure. Brokerage commissions depend on the investor’s brokerage arrangement, while spreads and premium-or-discount behavior can vary with trading conditions. If your account offers different execution terms, the trading cost you experience may differ from another investor’s. The fund prospectus describes important considerations, but it cannot tell you the exact cost of a future transaction in your account.

How to compare risk without relying on one number
Start with the risks created by the sector
An energy-sector fund is not equivalent to a broad-market fund. Its sector focus can make its performance more dependent on energy businesses and conditions, including energy prices and supply-demand shifts. The XLE filing explicitly contrasts the effects of its energy concentration with a more diversified fund, while Vanguard’s fact sheet warns that sector and non-diversification risks can produce more extreme fluctuations than the overall stock market. Those warnings are relevant even if a fund has many holdings.
Read the fund’s risk disclosures alongside its holdings and benchmark. Look for the risks that follow from the companies it owns, the sector it targets, and the way it is constructed. A fund with a narrower set of securities may be more affected by changes in a single holding; a sector-focused fund may remain exposed to sector-wide conditions even when issuer weights are spread across many companies.
Use statistics only when dates and methods match
Volatility, tracking error, and drawdown answer different questions. Standard deviation summarizes how widely returns varied around their average over a stated period; it does not say why they varied or how large a future loss will be. Tracking error describes how much a fund’s returns deviated from its benchmark over a period. Drawdown describes a decline from a prior high to a subsequent low. None of these alone establishes a fund’s overall risk.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteVanguard reported VDE’s three-year standard deviation as 19.80% as of July 31, 2026. It is a dated statistic for one fund, not evidence that VDE is more or less risky than a peer. To make a peer comparison, use the same start and end dates, the same return frequency and calculation convention where available, and each fund’s relevant benchmark. A three-year statistic for one fund should not be set beside a five-year statistic for another and presented as an apples-to-apples result.
Also distinguish relative risk from absolute risk. A fund might track its benchmark closely while both the fund and benchmark experience large fluctuations. Conversely, a fund’s tracking error could be noticeable even if its absolute volatility is lower than that of another fund. Pair numerical metrics with the holdings, concentration, mandate, and prospectus disclosures.
A practical step-by-step comparison
- Choose the funds and fix the comparison date. Use the latest prospectus and holdings information available for each candidate. Record the date of each document and each holdings snapshot; if the dates differ materially, avoid treating the values as simultaneous.
- Write down the mandate and benchmark. Note whether the fund tracks an index, generally corresponds to one, or uses another stated approach. Record the benchmark’s geography, market-cap coverage, and construction details described in the prospectus.
- Compare portfolio composition. Capture holdings count, largest issuer weights, combined top holdings weight, and available subsector exposure. Check whether the current portfolio reflects the mandate rather than assuming that the name guarantees a particular mix.
- Read the risk disclosures. Identify sector, non-diversification, issuer, and other material risks described in each fund’s documents. Assess whether a concentrated position or limited number of securities could have an outsized effect.
- Record expense ratios and waivers. Use the current total annual operating expenses from each prospectus. Label any fee waiver or reimbursement and its stated date or terms; do not compare a waived figure with an unqualified figure without noting the distinction.
- List trading costs separately. For ETFs, consider brokerage fees, bid-ask spreads, and the possibility that market price differs from NAV. These costs are transaction-dependent, so do not claim that the expense ratio includes them.
- Align risk metrics. Compare standard deviation, tracking error, drawdown, or other published measures only over matching periods and with comparable benchmarks and calculation methods. Label every statistic with its source and as-of date.
- Make the comparison conditional, not absolute. State what each fund’s mandate, holdings, costs, and risk profile show. Do not call one fund “safest” or “best” solely because it has a lower expense ratio, more holdings, or one favorable historical statistic.
Common comparison mistakes to avoid
- Choosing by the fund name: Similar labels can mask different index objectives and constituent rules.
- Treating holdings count as diversification: A large count does not reveal issuer weights, overlapping exposures, or shared sector risk.
- Comparing expense ratios without dates: Prospectus figures can change, and waivers can affect disclosed expenses.
- Calling an expense ratio the total cost: ETF commissions, bid-ask spreads, and premiums or discounts to NAV are separate considerations.
- Mixing risk periods: Statistics computed over different windows or conventions are not directly comparable.
- Using the broad stock market as the only risk reference: A sector fund’s relevant benchmark and sector-specific risks also matter.
- Turning historical figures into forecasts: A past standard deviation or holdings snapshot describes a dated observation, not future performance or risk.
What the comparison can—and cannot—tell you
A disciplined review can show how energy funds differ in mandate, benchmark, current portfolio, concentration, disclosed operating expenses, trading considerations, and historical risk measures. It cannot establish that an energy fund is suitable for a particular investor without considering that person’s objectives, time horizon, broader portfolio, and ability to tolerate losses. It also cannot turn date-mismatched figures into a reliable ranking.
Use the latest fund documents for the specific fund you are evaluating, and preserve the as-of date beside every holdings, cost, and risk figure. The resulting comparison should make differences visible without presenting sector exposure as broad-market diversification or a historical metric as a guarantee.
