Compare each sample with the same reference, note missing intervals, and examine how readings respond when intensity changes. A chest strap is a practical personal reference, but it is not automatically a clinical gold standard, and no single test proves that one sensor wins for every person or activity.
Published evidence is product- and protocol-specific. A 2026 controlled treadmill study found almost no average difference between AirPods Pro 3 and an ECG-derived Polar H10 reference, while Apple’s 2024 Apple Watch report gives separate accuracy and availability results for all-terrain running. Those findings are useful context, not guarantees for your workouts.

| Heart-rate earbuds | Optical sensing in or near the ear; the exact implementation is product-specific. | The ear can remain relatively stable during steady exercise, and earbuds can provide a second stream alongside a watch. | Loose or shifted fit, sweat, ear anatomy, motion, product-specific algorithms, and readings that are omitted when signal quality is judged inadequate. |
| Apple Watch | Optical photoplethysmography (PPG) on the wrist. During workouts, green LEDs and light-sensitive photodiodes detect blood-flow changes. | Convenient recording in the workout app, continuous context such as pace and calories, and the option to use a compatible Bluetooth chest strap. | Loose placement, poor skin perfusion, cold, some tattoos, and irregular arm movement. Wrist PPG can react differently from an ear or chest signal. |
| Chest strap | Electrodes on the chest detect the heart’s electrical activity; the receiving device displays the calculated rate. | Close electrical timing to each heartbeat and a useful personal reference when fitted and paired correctly. | Dry electrodes, a slipping band, poor contact, battery or pairing problems, and the fact that a consumer strap is not a clinical instrument by default. |
When several monitors are connected, the app may choose one source for a particular screen or recorded field. Do not infer the source from a displayed number alone; inspect the workout record and the app’s device information.

What published evidence can—and cannot—tell you
| Evidence | Result | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 PLOS Digital Health controlled graded-treadmill validation | AirPods Pro 3 versus an ECG-derived Polar H10 reference in 40 adults and 16,735 paired five-second epochs produced a mean bias of −0.03 beats per minute. | The near-zero signed average indicates close agreement under that treadmill protocol. It does not mean every five-second sample matched, nor does it establish performance during outdoor, interval, strength, or everyday activity. |
| Apple’s November 2024 Apple Watch performance report | For all-terrain running, 88% of published measurements were within 5 beats per minute and 94% within 10 beats per minute of a chest-strap reference. | These are Apple’s foreground figures for its tested method. The report treats availability separately from accuracy, and the percentages are not a promise for an individual wearer. |
| 2019 earbud-monitor study | A Jabra earbud and Mio Alpha wrist monitor were evaluated against a Polar chest strap during aerobic and resistance exercise. | It shows that ear-worn monitoring has been studied, but the products and algorithms are older. Results cannot be transferred to AirPods Pro 3 or any other current model. |
The AirPods study synchronized device time series and combined them into non-overlapping five-second epochs. That demonstrates why time alignment matters; it is an example of a research protocol, not a universal consumer requirement. Apple’s Watch technical report also uses a five-second reporting cadence in its performance table while reporting availability separately.
Prepare a fair three-device comparison
Use the same physical conditions
- Wear the earbuds, Watch, and chest strap simultaneously.
- Use the same start and stop times for every recording. Starting one app several minutes late makes averages and peaks incomparable.
- Keep the Watch snug on top of the wrist. Apple recommends a secure fit rather than a loose band that can move over the skin.
- Moisten chest-strap electrode areas according to the strap’s instructions, tighten it so it cannot slide, and verify that the receiving app shows a live signal before beginning.
- Fit both earbuds consistently. If one earbud is the sensing unit, use the same side and tip size in every trial.
- Charge devices, update them before the test if required, and record which app and device supplied each value.
Choose workouts that answer your question
If you mainly run, begin with a steady run and then include intervals. If you cycle, test both an indoor trainer and an outdoor ride if those are your normal activities. Add a resistance or racket-sport session only when you need to know how the sensors behave with irregular movement. One treadmill session cannot establish performance for every workout type.
Synchronize clocks before recording
Make sure the phone, Watch, earbuds, and chest-strap receiver use the correct time and time zone. Note the actual start time and any pauses. A reading displayed at 10:15:30 on one device must be matched with the sample from the same moment on the others, not simply with the nearest row in a differently sampled export.
Step-by-step comparison procedure
- Define the reference. For a personal comparison, designate the correctly fitted chest strap as the working reference. State that it is a practical benchmark, not a clinical gold standard.
- Start every recording. Begin the Watch workout, earbud heart-rate recording, and chest-strap receiver as close together as possible. Record the intended activity and whether the session includes pauses.
- Warm up without judging the data. Give each sensor time to establish contact. Mark the warm-up period so you do not mistake startup gaps for inaccurate readings.
- Hold a steady effort. Maintain an easy, moderate, or hard intensity for several minutes. Steady segments make timing offsets easier to see than a constantly changing effort.
- Add controlled changes. During the same session, include a few planned increases and decreases in effort. Note when each change begins; the delay before a device follows the change is part of the comparison.
- Keep the devices recording during pauses. If you stop, mark the pause rather than silently deleting it. Some apps stop sampling or insert gaps when movement ceases.
- Stop together and save raw records. Preserve the original workout files or exports. Do not rely only on a summary average displayed after the workout.
- Repeat on another day. Repeat the protocol under different temperature, clothing, or workout conditions that matter to you. A single session can be dominated by a temporary fit or signal problem.
How to analyze the recordings
Align samples by time
Put all series on one timeline. If one device reports every five seconds and another reports at an irregular cadence, interpolate only for visualization and label that choice. Do not create precision that the original data did not contain. Trim the comparison to periods when the reference and the tested device both have a value.

Compare more than the average
- Signed difference: tested-device heart rate minus reference heart rate. A positive value indicates over-reading; a negative value indicates under-reading.
- Absolute error: the size of the difference without regard to direction. This reveals disagreement that can cancel out in a signed average.
- Agreement bands: inspect how often differences fall within practical limits such as 5 or 10 beats per minute. Use the limit as a reporting choice, not as a universal medical threshold.
- Missing-data rate: count the duration and percentage of reference-covered time for which the tested device supplied no value.
- Response to intensity changes: compare when each series begins rising, reaches a new plateau, and falls during recovery. A delayed but eventually similar value is different from a persistent offset.
- Peaks and troughs: compare peaks from the same timestamp window. Never compare one workout’s peak with another workout’s average.
A device that publishes fewer, better-screened samples can look accurate when values exist while still being less useful for continuous training. Report availability and numerical agreement together.
Use simple summaries responsibly
For each workout, report the number of paired samples, the mean signed difference, the mean absolute error, the largest sustained discrepancy, and missing intervals. Keep steady-state and transition periods separate when possible. A five-minute interval where all devices agree can hide a ten-second failure during an interval sprint, and a short spike can distort an entire-session average.
Apple Watch factors that change the result
Apple describes the Watch workout sensor as optical PPG: green light-emitting diodes illuminate the skin and photodiodes detect changes associated with blood flow. The watch needs a stable optical path, so Apple recommends a snug fit on top of the wrist.

Apple identifies skin perfusion, environmental conditions such as cold, some tattoos, and motion as factors that can affect performance. Rhythmic running or cycling often gives the sensor a more regular signal than tennis, boxing, or other activities with abrupt, irregular arm movement. A band that is comfortable at rest may be too loose during impact or wrist flexion.

Apple’s own support guidance cautions that even ideal conditions do not guarantee a reliable reading for every person every time. When a consistent reading remains difficult, Apple says a compatible Bluetooth chest strap can be connected wirelessly. Pairing a strap can improve the Watch’s input, but it does not make the watch’s optical sensor identical to the strap.
Earbud heart-rate factors
Earbud evidence must be read by model. AirPods Pro 3 have documented workout heart-rate tracking, and Apple says AirPods Pro 3 and Apple Watch can provide multiple heart-rate streams for broader coverage. The exact source surfaced in a workout can depend on the product and app behavior, so verify the recorded source instead of assuming the visible number came from the earbud.
Ear fit is central. A tip that seals well for audio may still allow optical movement if the earbud rocks during running. Sweat, insertion depth, left-right asymmetry, and changes caused by chewing or talking can alter contact. Test the same fit each time and log any adjustment during the workout.

The 2026 treadmill validation is encouraging for AirPods Pro 3 under its controlled conditions, but it does not establish accuracy for every wearer, firmware version, outdoor route, strength exercise, or rapid interval. Treat the result as evidence about that product and protocol, not as a verdict on all heart-rate earbuds.

Why a chest strap is useful but not infallible
A chest strap sits close to the heart and detects electrical activity, which makes it a practical timing reference for a personal experiment. The cited AirPods study specifically used a Polar H10 with an ECG-derived reference signal. That detail matters: it identifies the device and method used in that study, but it does not turn every consumer chest strap into a clinical reference.
Check the strap before blaming another sensor. Dry electrodes, a loose band, a depleted battery, radio dropouts, or a strap paired to the wrong app can create spikes and gaps. If the strap trace is implausible—such as abrupt impossible jumps while you are stationary—repeat the test after cleaning and moistening the contacts and confirming the pairing.
Expected behavior by workout type
| Workout or condition | What to watch for | Best comparison practice |
|---|---|---|
| Steady treadmill running | Usually the easiest setting for timing and fit comparisons; this resembles the controlled AirPods validation. | Use several steady stages, then compare both plateau values and transitions. |
| Outdoor or all-terrain running | Terrain, arm swing, vibration, temperature, and changing pace can introduce gaps or lag. | Mark hills and stops; evaluate each terrain segment rather than one blended average. |
| Cycling | Regular cadence may help wrist PPG, but gripping bars, vibration, clothing, and cold hands can affect the Watch. | Compare indoor and outdoor sessions if both matter to your training. |
| Resistance training | Grip pressure, wrist flexion, breath holding, and short rests can produce irregular signals. | Analyze sets and rests separately and expect more missing or delayed samples. |
| Tennis, boxing, and similar sports | Rapid, non-rhythmic arm movement is specifically a challenge for wrist optical sensing. | Use longer matched segments and emphasize availability and recovery behavior, not only averages. |
| Cold conditions | Reduced skin perfusion can weaken wrist optical readings; ear and chest signals may also change with fit and clothing. | Record temperature and warm-up duration, then repeat indoors to isolate the environmental effect. |
Missing readings, lag, and source confusion
Do not treat a blank as a zero or silently carry the previous value forward. A device may omit a sample because its signal-quality rules reject it. Count the gap, identify what the other sensors reported at that time, and note whether the gap occurred during motion, a pause, or a fit adjustment.
Displayed values may update at different cadences. One screen can show a smoothed number while the saved workout contains discrete samples. Likewise, an app can prioritize one paired monitor for the workout record while another device shows a live value. Inspect the exported record, device labels, and timestamps before concluding that two sensors disagreed.

Troubleshoot a large discrepancy
| Symptom | Likely explanation | Action |
|---|---|---|
| One device is consistently 10–20 beats per minute higher from the start. | Wrong source, clock offset, poor fit, or a strap contact problem. | Confirm the recorded device, resynchronize clocks, refit all sensors, and repeat a steady segment. |
| Values agree at rest but diverge during running. | Motion artifact, loose Watch band, shifting earbud, or strap movement. | Tighten the relevant fit and repeat rhythmic running before testing irregular exercise. |
| The Watch has long blanks in cold weather. | Reduced wrist skin perfusion or movement-related signal loss. | Warm up, keep the Watch snug, and compare with a compatible Bluetooth chest strap. |
| The earbud trace has isolated extreme spikes. | Transient contact change, sweat, or an algorithmic outlier. | Check insertion and the raw timeline; do not let a single spike determine the workout verdict. |
| The chest strap is erratic while the other two are smooth. | Dry electrodes, loose tension, low battery, or pairing interference. | Moisten and clean contacts, tighten the band, replace or charge the battery, and verify the receiver. |
| All devices appear offset by a similar amount. | Unsynchronized clocks or a start/stop mismatch. | Align timestamps and trim unmatched startup and cooldown periods. |
Which reading should you trust?
For a personal training comparison, first trust the stream that is present, internally plausible, and supported by a stable fit. Use the chest strap as the working reference when its contact and trace are sound; then quantify how closely the earbud and Watch follow it across steady periods, transitions, and the activities you actually perform.
If the chest strap repeatedly shows clean electrical timing while one optical device drops samples or lags during movement, the strap is the more dependable source for that workout. If the strap is clearly malfunctioning, do not force it to be the reference; repeat the test after fixing the strap. If the earbud and Watch agree with each other but both differ from a questionable strap, the agreement alone does not identify the correct value.
There is no universal winner. The controlled AirPods Pro 3 treadmill result, Apple’s Watch running figures, and older earbud research describe different products, populations, activities, and methods. Your own synchronized, repeated comparison is the appropriate way to choose a sensor for your use case.

Consumer heart-rate devices are training tools, not diagnoses. Do not change medication or ignore symptoms because two devices agree. Stop exercising and seek appropriate medical care for chest pain, fainting, severe shortness of breath, or other concerning symptoms, regardless of what a wearable displays.
For a defensible result, document the device models, firmware or app versions when available, fit, activity, environmental conditions, start and stop times, missing intervals, and the reference definition. That record lets you tell a genuine sensor limitation from a one-off setup error.
