Compare currency-hedged and unhedged funds in two separate layers: the investments they own and the currency exposure they leave you with. An unhedged fund passes most exchange-rate movements through to your home-currency return. A hedged fund normally uses currency forwards to reduce that effect, but the hedge has costs, can be imperfect and can underperform when the foreign currency helps your return.
The right choice depends on your home currency, time horizon, risk tolerance, asset class and the allocation’s job in your portfolio. There is no universally superior share class.

What “currency-hedged” and “unhedged” mean
Unhedged funds
An unhedged international fund owns assets priced in foreign currencies and does not routinely offset those currency exposures. If you measure the investment in your home currency, you receive both the local-market result and the exchange-rate result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

A UK investor in the same underlying assets is exposed to the euro/sterling rate instead. The same fund can therefore produce different results for investors with different home currencies.

Currency-hedged funds
A hedged share class or fund enters financial contracts, commonly currency forwards, intended to offset some or most of the foreign-currency exposure against a stated target currency. The target is usually the currency in which the investor expects to spend or measure portfolio value.
“Hedged” describes an objective, not a guarantee. Contracts may not cover every currency or every asset at every moment, and the hedge itself creates gains, losses and expenses. PIMCO’s educational explanation is that hedged share classes seek to minimize, but cannot completely eliminate, a fund investor’s currency risk.
How currency changes your home-currency return
A foreign investment’s home-currency return combines the asset’s local-currency return with the change in the foreign currency against your home currency. A useful approximation is:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Home-currency return = (1 + local asset return) × (1 + currency return) − 1
Here, a positive currency return means the foreign currency appreciated against your home currency. Consider an illustrative, not predictive, example:
| Component | Foreign currency weakens 8% | Foreign currency strengthens 8% |
|---|---|---|
| Local asset return | +10% | +10% |
| Currency return | −8% | +8% |
| Approximate home-currency result | +1.2% | +18.8% |
Vanguard UK uses the same principle in its sterling explanation: a foreign currency weakening against sterling reduces sterling proceeds, while a strengthening currency increases them. An unhedged investor accepts that extra source of variability. A hedged investor gives up much of that variability, along with the possibility that a favorable currency move will boost the result.
How a currency hedge is implemented
Forwards and the hedge target
The manager typically converts incoming money into the fund’s base currency to buy the assets, then enters a forward contract that offsets the relevant currency exposure against the target currency. The contract locks an exchange rate for a future date rather than changing the currency denomination of the underlying shares or bonds.
The prospectus should state the hedge target and intended hedge ratio. A fund hedged to US dollars is not automatically hedged for a sterling, euro or Australian-dollar investor. If your spending currency differs from the fund’s target, residual currency exposure remains.

Rolling the contracts
Forwards expire, so the manager must close, settle or replace them. PIMCO says managers commonly roll hedges at least monthly and may roll more frequently during volatile periods or when regulation requires it. That is a common practice, not a universal schedule; the individual fund’s documents control.
Share class versus separate fund
Some products offer hedged and unhedged share classes of the same portfolio. Others create a separate hedged fund, or a fund-of-funds structure that owns an unhedged fund and adds currency forwards. The legal structure can affect fees, tax reporting, dealing arrangements and tracking, so do not assume two similarly named products are interchangeable.
BlackRock’s iShares product brief gives one implementation example: a currency-hedged ETF can hold an unhedged ETF and sell local-currency forwards against the US dollar. Its HEWJ example uses one-month Japanese-yen/US-dollar forwards rebalanced monthly. This illustrates one design, not a template for every fund.

Why hedged and unhedged funds perform differently
Forward pricing and interest-rate differences
A forward rate reflects interest-rate differentials between the two currencies, not just the current spot exchange rate. Depending on which currency has the higher interest rate, those forward points can add to or subtract from a hedged share class’s return relative to an unhedged class.
Cross-currency basis
Supply and demand for funding in each currency can shift the cross-currency basis. That changes the price of maintaining the hedge and can make the result better or worse than a simple interest-rate comparison would suggest.
Contract gains, losses and transaction costs
The forwards themselves gain or lose value as exchange rates move. Trading spreads, brokerage, collateral and settlement costs reduce returns. A fund may also hold cash or short-term instruments to support the contracts, creating another source of tracking difference.
Imperfect matching
The manager cannot always match the hedge perfectly to the portfolio’s current currency exposure. Asset prices, subscriptions, redemptions, dividends and corporate actions change the amount to be hedged. A portfolio holding several currencies may also hedge only a defined basket or use a proxy. These mismatches leave residual currency risk.

A practical comparison process
1. Define your home currency and spending objective
Write down the currency in which you expect to spend the money. A hedge to another currency may not reduce the risk that matters to you. Also note whether the investment is for near-term spending, long-term growth, income, a liability or diversification.
2. Confirm that the underlying market is genuinely comparable
Compare funds only after checking their countries, securities, capitalization range and asset class. An all-country portfolio and a developed-markets-only portfolio are not a clean hedge comparison, even if both use the word “international.” Differences in emerging-market exposure, small caps, sector weights or bond duration can dominate the currency effect.
3. Identify the currency being hedged
Look for wording such as “hedged to USD,” “hedged to GBP” or “hedged to the fund’s base currency.” Check whether the fund hedges each foreign currency separately, uses a basket or hedges only the largest exposures. A fund’s base currency is an accounting denomination; it is not automatically your home currency.

Record the following details from the prospectus or factsheet:
- Instrument used, such as forwards, futures or swaps.
- Target hedge ratio and permitted range.
- Rebalancing or roll frequency.
- Whether the hedge is applied at portfolio level or to a particular share class.
- How collateral, cash and derivative gains or losses are handled.
- Whether the policy allows discretion during stressed or illiquid markets.
5. Compare costs and tracking, not just the headline fee
Place the current ongoing charge or expense ratio beside the benchmark, tracking difference and any disclosed derivative or transaction expenses. A lower stated expense ratio does not prove a lower all-in cost if implementation produces larger tracking drag. Do not treat one provider’s fee as representative of the entire market.
6. Check the benchmark methodology
Verify whether each fund tracks a net, gross or price index; whether withholding taxes are assumed; and whether the hedged benchmark itself includes currency-forward effects. A hedged fund should normally be compared with the appropriately hedged version of the same index, not with a different index that happens to have a similar name.
7. Verify local availability and tax treatment
Fund eligibility, share classes, reporting status, dividend treatment, capital-gains rules and derivative taxation vary by jurisdiction and account type. The correct comparison cannot be completed without knowing your country and home currency. Check the local offering document and, where necessary, obtain tax advice.
8. Use performance history as evidence, not a forecast
Compare matched periods and explain the currency environment during those periods. A period in which the foreign currency appreciated can make an unhedged fund look unusually strong; a period of depreciation can make it look unusually weak. Past hedged-versus-unhedged differences do not reliably predict the next currency cycle.

Comparison checklist at a glance
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Underlying exposure | Same countries, securities, sectors, duration and asset class? | Different portfolios create non-currency performance differences. |
| Home and target currency | What currency do you spend in, and what currency does the fund hedge to? | A hedge to the wrong currency may leave the relevant risk in place. |
| Hedge instrument | Forwards or another derivative? Share class or separate fund? | Structure affects costs, tax reporting and tracking. |
| Hedge ratio and schedule | What percentage is targeted, and how often is it reset? | Timing and incomplete coverage create residual exposure. |
| Benchmark | Is it the same index and does it include hedging effects? | Prevents an unfair performance comparison. |
| Costs | Current expense ratio, trading costs and observed tracking difference? | The stated fee is not the entire cost of implementation. |
| Portfolio role | Growth, income, liability matching or volatility control? | The useful amount of currency risk depends on the job of the allocation. |
| Local rules | Available share class, tax treatment and account eligibility? | A theoretically suitable fund may be unavailable or taxed differently where you live. |
When a hedge may make sense
Investors prioritizing home-currency stability
A hedge can be useful when large currency swings would interfere with a defined spending need or with the intended risk level of the allocation. It reduces one source of volatility; it does not remove equity-market, interest-rate, credit, country or liquidity risk.
Bond allocations
Vanguard describes hedging bonds as a way to preserve their portfolio-stability role, because unhedged currency movements can overwhelm the relatively modest local-currency volatility that bonds are intended to provide. That is the provider’s portfolio approach, not a rule that applies to every investor or bond fund.
Equity allocations
Vanguard’s UK platform more commonly leaves equity holdings unhedged, reflecting a view that long-term investors may accept currency variability as part of global equity diversification. Other investors may reasonably prefer a hedge, especially for a shorter horizon or a specific home-currency liability. The decision should follow your objective rather than a universal asset-class slogan.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Shorter versus longer horizons
Over a short period, an exchange-rate move can dominate the underlying asset return. Over a long period, currency movements can reverse, but there is no dependable schedule for that reversal. Horizon changes how much volatility you can tolerate; it does not make currency risk disappear.
When an unhedged fund may be appropriate
Long-term growth with tolerance for volatility
An unhedged allocation preserves the possibility that foreign-currency appreciation adds to your home-currency return. It may also diversify the risks of a concentrated home economy or home currency. You must be able to tolerate periods when currency depreciation subtracts from otherwise positive local-market returns.
Investors who want broad currency diversification
Holding assets in several currencies can provide a different risk profile from holding only home-currency assets. That diversification is intentional only if you understand which currencies the fund owns and how their weights change.
Situations where hedging costs are unattractive
If forward pricing, basis effects and turnover consistently create a large drag, an unhedged version may deliver a better result for an investor who does not need stable home-currency value. This should be evaluated from current documents and a matched benchmark, not assumed from the label.

Only relative to the currency being hedged and the direction of the move. Suppose a non-US fund is hedged to US dollars. If the dollar strengthens against the fund’s local currencies, the hedge can offset the loss that a US-dollar investor would otherwise experience. If the dollar weakens, an unhedged US investor may receive a currency gain, while the hedged version may lag because it has sold much of that exposure. A dollar-based hedge also does nothing to protect a sterling- or euro-based investor from movements against their own spending currency.

Published example: iShares Currency Hedged MSCI EAFE ETF (HEFA)
HEFA is a US-listed example of a currency-hedged international-equity ETF. The official product page identifies the MSCI EAFE 100% Hedged to USD Index (Net) as its benchmark. The page reported a 0.35% net expense ratio and a 0.70% gross expense ratio when accessed on October 13, 2026. Those figures are time-sensitive and should be rechecked in the current documents.
HEFA is an example of how to inspect a product, not a recommendation and not a matched comparison with an unhedged fund here. Before using it in a decision, confirm current fees, benchmark wording, hedge policy, US listing and eligibility for your account and country. Historical fee-waiver dates shown in older product briefs have passed and should not be treated as current pricing.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Comparing different portfolios
If the hedged fund owns developed-market large-cap stocks and the unhedged fund includes emerging markets and small caps, the result says little about currency hedging. Match the exposures first.
Assuming “hedged” means risk-free
Derivatives reduce targeted currency exposure only. They do not protect against falling share prices, bond defaults, rising yields, political events or a hedge that does not align with the assets.
Using the fund’s base currency as your personal currency
A euro base currency does not make a fund suitable for every euro investor, and it does not hedge a dollar investor unless the product explicitly targets dollars.
Looking only at the expense ratio
Include forward pricing, basis, turnover, transaction costs and tracking difference. Two funds with similar stated fees can produce different net results because their implementation differs.
Choosing from a single winning period
Identify whether the winning fund benefited from a favorable currency move, different asset exposure or a temporary pricing effect. A single historical ranking is not a currency forecast.
Ignoring share-class and tax details
Hedged and unhedged classes can have different identifiers, distributions, withholding treatment and account eligibility. Confirm the exact share class you can buy.
A decision worksheet
- Write your home currency: the currency of your future spending or liabilities.
- State the purpose: growth, income, diversification, liability matching or volatility control.
- Set a tolerable currency drawdown: decide how much temporary exchange-rate loss you can accept without selling at the wrong time.
- Match the portfolios: confirm countries, securities, asset class, benchmark and duration or capitalization exposure.
- Record hedge details: target currency, ratio, instrument and reset schedule.
- Calculate the all-in comparison: ongoing charge, tracking difference and disclosed hedge or trading effects.
- Check local rules: availability, tax treatment, account eligibility and reporting requirements.
- Choose a review trigger: revisit the allocation when your spending currency, horizon, risk tolerance or portfolio role changes, not merely after a currency headline.
The most defensible comparison is therefore not “hedged versus unhedged” in isolation. It is the same underlying international exposure, measured in your home currency, with the hedge mechanics, costs, tax rules and portfolio purpose made explicit.
