Compare the amount the recipient can actually spend or withdraw—not just the sender fee or the crypto network fee. Use the same sending and receiving countries, amount, funding method, payout method, and quote time for every option. Then count exchange-rate differences, taxes, third-party deductions, crypto purchase and transfer costs, and local conversion or withdrawal charges.
Set up a like-for-like comparison
A quote for a bank deposit is not directly comparable with one for cash pickup or a wallet payout. First define one specific transfer scenario, then request or calculate each route against it.

- Countries and currencies: record where the sender pays from and where the recipient will receive value.
- Send amount and funding method: specify how much the sender wants to spend and whether the payment comes from a bank account, card, cash, or crypto balance.
- Payout method: identify bank deposit, cash pickup, mobile or digital wallet, or another local payout.
- Quote time: record the date and time for each quote. Exchange rates and provider terms can change; the Bank of Italy advises comparing offers on the same day using its cost calculator.
Keep the assumptions identical. If one quote uses a different funding or payout method, note that difference rather than treating its price as a direct match.

Work from both ends of the transfer: what the sender pays, and what the recipient can use after all known charges. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) identifies provider fees, applicable agent and third-party fees, exchange-rate costs, and government taxes as potential remittance costs. A route with no advertised sender fee can still leave the recipient with less.

- Record the sender’s total outlay. Include the transfer charge and taxes. For a crypto route, include any cost or spread to acquire the token and any charge to move it to the next service or recipient.
- Compare the exchange rates. Write down each provider’s quoted rate and a same-time reference rate. Measure the difference against the value at the reference rate; that difference is an estimated exchange-rate cost, even if the provider lists a zero transfer fee. The CFPB explains this pricing issue in Circular 2024-02.
- Add deductions along the route. Count agent or intermediary charges, platform charges, crypto acquisition costs, network fees, conversion spreads, redemption or off-ramp fees, and recipient withdrawal charges where they apply.
- Write down the usable payout. State the amount in local currency available for spending or withdrawal after known charges. For a crypto transfer, a token arriving in a wallet or a blockchain confirmation is not the same thing as a local-currency payout.
The CFPB has addressed the consumer question, “I sent money to someone in a foreign country, but the amount received was less than what I sent. What can I do?” Its consumer guidance on international money transfers is useful for understanding disclosures and options for eligible U.S. remittance transfers.
Trace every step in a crypto or stablecoin route
For a crypto remittance, identify who converts the sender’s money into a token, which network and wallet carry it, who receives it, and how that person will turn it into usable local value. Depending on the arrangement, a service or disbursing agent may handle one or more of those steps. The design and availability of payment infrastructure matter, as the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) discusses in its October 2023 CPMI report on cross-border payments and cryptoassets and a 2023 speech on stablecoins and cross-border payments.

- Ask whether the recipient needs a particular wallet, account, or platform, and whether identity checks are required.
- Find out whether the recipient can spend the token directly or must convert, redeem, or withdraw it—and who charges for that step.
- Include any cost of exchanging the sender’s funds for crypto, not only the network transaction fee.
- Check whether the payout depends on a local exchange, payment service, or cash agent, and whether that option is available to the recipient.
Stablecoin does not mean risk-free cash or a cost-free transfer. The BIS notes that results vary once fees, exchange-rate spreads, and on- and off-ramp costs are included. Its 2026 Annual Economic Report estimates $28 trillion in stablecoin transaction volume in 2025, but cautions that gross volume is much less informative about real payment use than it first appears: volume net of transfers between wallets owned by the same party is far lower. That gross figure should not be read as remittance volume or proof that a route is inexpensive.
Compare speed, access, and recourse as well as price
Record the estimated time until funds are usable—not merely until a transfer is initiated or a token reaches a wallet. Also compare payout choices, transfer limits, what happens if details are wrong, whether a payment can be reversed, and how errors or disputes are handled.

Protections depend on jurisdiction and transfer type. The CFPB’s disclosure and cancellation guidance applies to eligible U.S. remittance transfers; it does not establish equivalent rights in every country or for every crypto arrangement. Check which laws and complaint channels apply to the sender, provider, and recipient’s payout service.
Use a worksheet for quotes taken at the same time
Fill one row per route, using the same transfer assumptions and quote timestamp. If a charge or detail is not disclosed, mark it as unknown rather than treating it as zero.

Put broad benchmarks in context
The World Bank’s Remittance Prices Worldwide homepage reported a global average remittance cost of 6.36% and coverage of 367 corridors, 48 sending countries, and 105 receiving countries, with a listed update date of August 18, 2025. It also said that cutting prices by at least five percentage points could save up to $16 billion per year. These are dated global benchmarks, not current quotes for a particular transfer or proof that one provider or payment method is cheaper in a specific corridor.
