The most reliable exchange comparison uses your actual asset pair, approximate trade size, product (spot, futures or perpetuals, or options), order behavior, and country. For that scenario, compare three things together: the fee your order would actually incur, the spread and executable order-book depth, and the order types and execution controls available to your account. A low advertised fee does not prove a low all-in cost, and a platform-wide liquidity claim does not tell you how a particular BTC/USD order will execute.
Start with a like-for-like scenario
Write down the trade before opening an exchange comparison page. The same venue can show different schedules for products, pairs, account tiers, and regions, so a headline percentage is not a valid comparison by itself.

Define the five inputs
- Pair and quote currency: Compare the identical pair, such as BTC/USD, rather than substituting a different stablecoin or fiat market.
- Product: Keep spot, futures or perpetuals, and options separate. Their schedules and order menus can differ.
- Notional and direction: Estimate the value of each buy or sell leg. A book that is deep for a $500 order may be inadequate for a $100,000 order.
- Expected execution: Decide whether you expect to cross the spread immediately, place a resting limit, or split the order over time.
- Country and account: Pair and feature availability can depend on jurisdiction, account type, and product. Coinbase’s order-type documentation specifically says availability varies by country (Coinbase order types).
Record the observation time as well. Spreads, depth, prices, and volatility change continuously; two screenshots taken hours apart do not constitute a controlled comparison.

| Axis | What to record | Question it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Fee | Product, pair, 30-day volume or tier, maker/taker outcome, and any pair-specific schedule | What explicit trading fee applies to this order? |
| Liquidity | Best bid, best ask, spread, quantities at successive prices, and estimated average fill | How much price movement will this order cause? |
| Order types | Market, limit, conditional, TWAP or other algorithmic choices, post-only, and time-in-force controls | Can the venue express the way I need to trade? |
| Access | Country, account level, pair, and product eligibility | Can this account actually use the quoted feature? |
| Execution risk | Partial-fill behavior, slippage protections, price limits, and treatment of unfilled quantity | What happens when the market moves or liquidity disappears? |
Compare the fee that your order will receive
Maker and taker describe execution, not the button you press
An order is a taker when it immediately matches resting interest in the book. It is a maker when it rests and adds available liquidity. A limit order can therefore be maker, taker, or partly both: a marketable portion may execute immediately while a remainder rests. Coinbase’s trading rules explain these mechanics and identify a market order as a taker order (Coinbase Markets Trading Rules).

Do not label every limit order “maker” in a spreadsheet. Capture the expected behavior for each leg and check the fill report afterward. If an order is split between immediate and resting executions, the applicable fees can differ by fill.
Capture the complete schedule, not just an entry rate
For each exchange, note the pair, product, estimated 30-day volume, current tier, and whether the order is expected to make or take liquidity. Coinbase says its rates vary by product, fee tier, and maker/taker status, with certain pairs on separate schedules; tier criteria can use volume and balance information, and the tier at the time of the order determines the rate (Coinbase Advanced fees).
Kraken says its trading fee depends on 30-day volume, currency pair, and maker/taker status. Its volume-discount explanation is based on crypto order-book volume and excludes some activity, such as purchases made through its app or widget (How trading fees work on Kraken). That means a purchase made through a different interface should not automatically be counted toward the same discount calculation.

Check the exchange’s current fee page and the order preview immediately before trading. Fee schedules and feature availability are operational details that can change.
Calculate both legs of a round trip
If you buy and later sell, calculate the explicit fee on each leg rather than comparing only the entry transaction. A simple estimate is:
Total explicit fees = (buy notional × buy fee rate) + (sell notional × sell fee rate).
The sell notional may differ from the buy notional because the price moved. Keep the maker/taker assumption beside each percentage. Then add the cost of crossing the spread and the estimated price impact from consuming the book; those are execution costs, not substitutes for the exchange’s stated commission.

A published Kraken example, with its assumptions intact
Kraken’s official example for BTC/USD at $125,000 of 30-day volume lists a 0.12% maker rate and a 0.25% taker rate. On a $10,000 notional, the stated calculations are $12 for maker execution or $25 for taker execution. Kraken’s fee article was last updated September 5, 2026, and these are published example figures, not a universal or necessarily current rate for every pair or account (Kraken fee explanation). Verify the applicable schedule and order preview for your own tier.
Measure liquidity for the pair and size you will trade
Look beyond a platform-wide claim
Liquidity is not one exchange-wide number. For a controlled comparison, use the same pair, quote currency, order notional, and observation time on each venue. Record the best bid and ask, calculate the spread, and inspect the quantity available at successive prices on both sides of the book.
A narrow top-of-book spread can still hide thin depth one or two levels lower. Conversely, a slightly wider quoted spread may accompany enough depth to produce a better average fill for a large order. Estimate the execution price against the visible quantities instead of judging from the first bid and ask alone.
Apply the order to the displayed book
- Write down the best bid and best ask and the quantity available at each.
- List the next several price levels on the side your order will consume.
- Walk your intended quantity through those levels, subtracting available quantity until the order is filled or the book runs out.
- Compute the quantity-weighted average execution price.
- Compare that average with the mid-price or the best available quote, and express the difference as an absolute amount and percentage.
- Repeat for the opposite direction if you may both buy and sell.
This is a practical measurement procedure based on documented order-book mechanics; it is not a published head-to-head liquidity statistic.
Understand why a market order can move through several prices
Coinbase states that a market order can fill against multiple existing orders at different prices. Depending on the order quantity and the prices available, execution may be less favorable than the latest trade price, sometimes significantly so (Coinbase Markets Trading Rules). The last-traded price is therefore a reference point, not a guaranteed execution price.
Kraken’s updated customer agreement similarly warns that high volume, illiquidity, rapid movement, or volatility can cause execution prices to differ from the quote and can cause orders to execute in parts (Kraken Updated Customer Agreement, March 2025).
Do not publish an unsupported liquidity winner
The official pages reviewed do not provide a synchronized Coinbase-versus-Kraken order-book snapshot, comparable spread and depth statistics, or a market-wide named liquidity ranking. You cannot responsibly state that one has “better liquidity” without collecting pair-specific measurements at a stated date, time, order size, and method. Report your own observed numbers only with those conditions attached.

Compare order types by the outcome you need
| Order or control | What it is for | Main trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|
| Market | Immediate execution against available liquidity | No single-price guarantee; can consume multiple levels and incur slippage |
| Limit | Set a maximum buy price or minimum sell price | Execution is not guaranteed; a marketable limit can take liquidity while a resting limit can add it |
| Stop or conditional | Trigger an instruction when a condition is reached | Confirm whether the trigger creates a market or limit order and how that affects price certainty and fees |
| Take-profit or stop-loss variant | Automate an exit condition | Verify trigger source, resulting order type, and behavior during fast markets |
| TWAP | Split a larger order into scheduled smaller executions | May not fully execute if the configured limit or available liquidity prevents fills |
| Post-only | Require an order to rest rather than immediately take liquidity | It can be rejected or canceled when it would cross the book |
| Time in force | Control how long an order remains active | GTC, GTD, and IOC produce different persistence and partial-fill outcomes |
Market orders favor speed
Use a market order only when immediacy matters more than a precise price and the displayed depth is sufficient for your size. It seeks available liquidity but does not guarantee one displayed price. Coinbase’s rules explicitly describe this multi-price execution and identify the order as taker execution (Coinbase Markets Trading Rules).
Limit orders favor price control
A limit order sets a price boundary, but it may remain unfilled. A buy limit above the current ask or a sell limit below the current bid is marketable and can take liquidity; a non-crossing order can rest and potentially receive maker treatment. Check the exchange’s fee definition and the actual fills rather than inferring the result from the word “limit.”
Stops and brackets require a trigger check
Stop, take-profit, and stop-loss forms are conditional instructions. The critical comparison is what happens after the trigger: some workflows create a market order, while others create a limit order. The distinction changes execution certainty, slippage exposure, and possible maker/taker treatment. Coinbase lists stop-related and bracket forms in its order-type help, but you should verify the exact behavior for the product, pair, and region you are using (Coinbase order-type documentation).
TWAP is a scheduling tool, not a liquidity guarantee
Coinbase describes TWAP as splitting a large order into scheduled suborders. That can reduce the need to cross the entire visible book at once, but it does not guarantee completion. A configured limit, changing market, or insufficient liquidity can leave part of the parent order unfilled. Compare the schedule interval, price boundary, cancellation behavior, and resulting fees in the order preview.
Time-in-force and post-only controls change the result
Good-till-canceled (GTC) leaves eligible quantity open until it fills or is canceled; good-till-date (GTD) expires at a specified time; immediate-or-cancel (IOC) attempts an immediate fill and cancels the remainder. Post-only is designed to prevent taking liquidity, but an order that would immediately match can be rejected or canceled instead. Coinbase’s rules and help pages document GTC, GTD, IOC, and post-only behavior; confirm the labels and availability in your interface (Coinbase Markets Trading Rules; Coinbase order types).
A repeatable exchange-comparison procedure
1. Choose one concrete trade
For example, define a spot BTC/USD buy of a specified approximate notional, with either immediate execution or a resting limit. Do not compare a spot example on one venue with a perpetual contract on another.
2. Confirm access before comparing prices
Check that the pair, product, order type, and account tier are available in your country. A feature visible in general documentation may not be enabled for every jurisdiction or account.

3. Determine the fee tier and expected execution status
Use the venue’s current fee schedule and your estimated 30-day volume. Mark each proposed leg as expected maker, taker, or mixed, and note any separate schedule for the pair. Save the rate shown in the order preview.
4. Capture both sides of the book
At the same time on each venue, record the best bid, best ask, spread, and several levels of visible quantity. Use the same quote currency and order notional.

5. Estimate the executable average price
Walk the intended quantity through the displayed levels. Calculate the quantity-weighted average and the difference from the best quote. Repeat for a sell if the strategy involves a round trip.
6. Price the complete transaction
Add the explicit fee for each leg to the estimated spread and book-impact cost. Keep the assumptions visible: tier, maker/taker outcome, timestamp, and whether the calculation uses displayed or actually filled quantities.
7. Test the order controls against your objective
If you need certainty of immediate execution, examine market behavior and slippage protections. If you need a price ceiling, test a limit and its time-in-force. If you need to reduce market impact, inspect TWAP or another supported scheduling control. If you need a trigger, verify the resulting order type.
8. Record partial-fill and cancellation behavior
Document whether unfilled quantity remains open, expires, or cancels, and what happens when a post-only instruction would cross the book. These details can matter more than a small difference in the headline commission.
How to compare Coinbase Advanced and Kraken Pro without overclaiming
Both services publish material that lets you examine fee logic and order behavior, but the documents do not establish a universal winner. Use them as source documents for the same scenario rather than as proof that one venue is always cheaper or more liquid.
Best Value
| Comparison point | Coinbase Advanced | Kraken Pro |

| Liquidity evidence | Official rules explain how orders consume the book, but a live pair-specific spread and depth measurement is still required. | The official agreement explains execution risk, but a live pair-specific spread and depth measurement is still required. |
The correct conclusion from this documentation is methodological: calculate the rate for your tier, measure the relevant book, and confirm the order controls available to your account. It is not evidence for a blanket liquidity ranking.
Common comparison mistakes and their fixes
- Comparing different tiers: Fix it by using the same estimated 30-day volume and recording the tier at order time.
- Calling every limit order maker: Fix it by determining whether each fill rested or crossed the book.
- Using the last trade as the execution price: Fix it by walking the intended quantity through current asks or bids.
- Looking only at the top level: Fix it by recording successive levels and calculating a weighted average.
- Comparing a tiny test order with the real order: Fix it by modeling the actual notional and both directions.
- Ignoring the round trip: Fix it by calculating fees and execution impact on entry and exit.
- Assuming an order menu is universal: Fix it by checking product, pair, country, and account eligibility.
- Assuming a stop guarantees an exit price: Fix it by verifying whether the trigger creates a market or limit order.
- Treating TWAP as guaranteed completion: Fix it by checking the configured limit, schedule, and remaining quantity behavior.
- Publishing a liquidity winner from a single screenshot: Fix it by stating the timestamp, methodology, pair, and size, or by withholding the ranking.
A decision framework for choosing the venue
Choose the venue with the lowest measured all-in cost
When your priority is cost, compare explicit fees plus the spread and estimated market impact for the same order. A lower commission can lose its advantage if the order consumes more expensive levels.
Choose execution certainty when timing dominates
When a position must be opened or closed quickly, assess market-order depth, partial fills, and slippage protections. A limit order can protect price but may leave you unfilled.

Use a non-crossing limit, suitable time-in-force, and post-only where available when your priority is a price boundary or potential maker treatment. Accept that the market may never reach your price.
Choose scheduling controls for larger orders
For an order large enough to consume several levels, compare TWAP or other supported scheduling tools, their limits, intervals, cancellation rules, and the probability of completing the desired quantity.
Reject a nominal bargain that fails the access test
A quoted rate or order type is irrelevant if your country, account, pair, or product cannot use it. Treat eligibility as a first-stage filter, not a footnote.
Final checklist before placing the order
- Same pair, quote currency, product, and approximate notional on every venue.
- Current fee tier and 30-day volume assumption recorded.
- Expected maker/taker outcome identified for every leg.
- Best bid, best ask, spread, and several depth levels captured at a stated time.
- Weighted-average execution and estimated slippage calculated for the intended size.
- Round-trip fees considered where an exit is part of the plan.
- Order type, trigger behavior, time-in-force, and post-only rules confirmed.
- Country and account eligibility verified.
- Order preview checked immediately before submission.
That process answers “which exchange has the lowest fees and best liquidity?” in the only form that can be defended: which venue offers the lower measured cost and adequate execution for your specified pair, size, product, account, and time.
