How to Compare Cruise-Line Stocks With Travel and Leisure Stocks

Compare cruise-line stocks with travel and leisure companies by first identifying how each earns money, then matching operating measures to that business model. A cruise operator owns and runs ships; a hotel franchisor may earn fees from properties it does not own; and a vacation-ownership company can combine resort sales, consumer financing and memberships. Their shared exposure to leisure demand does not make their revenue, capital needs or risks interchangeable.

This is a filing-based comparison framework, not a current stock ranking. The company figures below cover fiscal 2025 unless otherwise stated; market prices and valuation inputs change and are not included.

Start by identifying what the company actually sells

“Travel and leisure” is not one business model. Before comparing revenue growth or valuation multiples, determine which activities generate sales and profit, and which assets and obligations support them.

  • Cruise operators: Sell passenger tickets and onboard services while operating ships and managing fleet capacity. Their results are exposed to utilization, onboard spending, fuel and labor costs, ship financing and newbuild commitments.
  • Hotel managers and franchisors: Can earn management, franchise and licensing fees from hotels owned by other parties. A large room or property count does not necessarily mean the company owns that real estate; check for a separate ownership segment.
  • Vacation-ownership and membership businesses: May sell vacation-ownership interests, finance customer contracts, manage properties and operate travel clubs or exchange networks. These activities bring different inventory, receivables and consumer-credit exposures from either cruise operations or hotel franchising.

The filings illustrate why these distinctions matter. Hilton reported 873 managed properties and 8,239 franchised or licensed properties in its management and franchise segment as of December 31, 2025, with 1,336,064 rooms in that segment (Hilton 2025 Form 10-K). Travel + Leisure Co. reported two segments—Vacation Ownership and Travel and Membership—in its fiscal 2025 filing (Travel + Leisure Co. 2025 Form 10-K). Neither company is a direct stand-in for a cruise operator.

Use common financial measures, but read the underlying economics

Start with measures that can frame any company, then inspect the financial statements and definitions rather than assuming identical labels mean identical things.

  • Revenue and operating income: Track growth and operating margin over comparable periods. Separate changes in volume from pricing, business mix, currency or acquisitions where company disclosures allow.
  • Cash generation: Compare cash from operations with capital spending and calculate free cash flow consistently. A company can report rising adjusted earnings while still using substantial cash for ships, property investment, receivables or other growth needs.
  • Debt and interest burden: Review gross and net debt, interest expense, maturity dates, liquidity disclosures and lease liabilities. Include customer deposits or deferred revenue in the broader liquidity picture, but do not treat them as equivalent to unrestricted cash.
  • Adjusted measures: Read the reconciliation to GAAP results and note which adjustments are excluded. Adjusted EBITDA and company-specific yield measures are not automatically comparable across issuers.

For example, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) reported 2025 revenue of $9.8 billion, up 3.7% year over year, and adjusted EBITDA of $2.7 billion, up 11.4%, in its fiscal 2025 Form 10-K (NCLH 2025 Form 10-K). Those issuer-reported figures describe one company and period; they are not sector benchmarks or proof of stronger cash generation.

For cruise lines, separate ticket sales, onboard spending and capacity

Cruise operators need operating measures that connect revenue to the capacity they put into service. Read each metric with the company’s definition, reporting period and denominator.

Revenue mix

NCLH reported that passenger tickets accounted for 68.0% of its 2025 revenue and onboard and other revenue for 32.0% (NCLH 2025 Form 10-K). The split helps distinguish fares from spending on services and activities aboard, but does not by itself show profit margins or customer demand trends.

Capacity, occupancy and yield

Compare capacity days, occupancy or load factor, and revenue or yield per capacity day where the issuer reports them. Ask whether revenue growth came from more capacity, fuller ships, higher prices or a different mix of itineraries and guests.

NCLH reported 103.5% occupancy for 2025. Occupancy above 100% reflects the company’s capacity methodology, so it should be quoted with that qualification and not compared mechanically with another operator’s figure. NCLH’s filing describes its own calculation of adjusted gross margin and net yield as using capacity days and per-capacity-day data; that issuer-specific definition is a reason to check the full methodology before comparing yields.

Fleet size and investment commitments

Fleet counts and berths describe scale, not profitability. Royal Caribbean reported a combined fleet of 69 ships and approximately 179,720 berths as of December 31, 2025, including partner brands; it defines berths on double occupancy per cabin (Royal Caribbean 2025 Form 10-K). Consider the fleet alongside delivery schedules, maintenance spending and destination investment, since capacity growth can bring substantial funding needs.

Cost and risk analysis should include fuel, labor, food and distribution expenses where disclosed, as well as interest costs and financing plans. Carnival reported more than $10 billion of debt reduction since its January 2023 peak and completion of a $19 billion refinancing plan in December 2025 in its fiscal 2025 annual report (Carnival Corporation & plc 2025 annual report). Those company-reported milestones provide debt-management context; they do not replace a review of remaining debt, maturities and cash needs.

Choose travel peers by business model, not by label

Once you have a cruise operator’s economics in view, compare it with the travel companies whose revenue drivers and capital structures are genuinely relevant.

Business type What to examine Why it differs from a cruise operator
Hotel manager or franchisor Management, franchise and licensing activity; any separately reported owned-property operations; room and property counts. Fee income from hotels owned by others has a different asset and capital profile from operating a ship fleet. Separate fee-based operations from owned hotels.
Owned hotel operator Owned-property revenue and costs, renovation and furniture, fixtures and equipment (FF&E) needs, and property investment. Real estate ownership changes asset intensity and maintenance requirements. Do not treat owned rooms as equivalent to franchised rooms.
Vacation-ownership or membership company Sales and financing of ownership interests, receivables, resort inventory and management, exchange or club membership activity. Consumer financing, inventory and membership economics are not captured by cruise capacity or hotel room measures.

Travel + Leisure Co.’s scale figures also need to be read by activity: as of December 31, 2025, it reported 797,000 owner families and more than 280 vacation club resort locations, alongside 3.3 million RCI members and 3,600 affiliated resorts (Travel + Leisure Co. 2025 Form 10-K). These figures describe different parts of its business, not a directly comparable measure of cruise capacity. Its Q2 2026 results page reported net revenue of $1.06 billion, net income of $109 million and adjusted EBITDA of $269 million for that quarter (Travel + Leisure Co. Q2 2026 results); do not compare a quarterly result with a full-year figure without aligning periods.

Compare capital needs and financial resilience

Strong reported earnings do not settle whether a company can fund its plans or withstand weaker demand. Link profitability to capital requirements and debt service.

  • For cruise lines: Check ship construction and delivery commitments, maintenance capital, destination spending, financing costs and debt maturities.
  • For hotels: Distinguish franchised and managed properties from owned real estate, then examine renovation and FF&E requirements and owned-property investment.
  • For vacation ownership: Review receivables, inventory investment and the company’s exposure to consumer financing, alongside membership and exchange activity.

Across all models, assess cash and liquidity, lease obligations, interest expense and the timing of fixed commitments. Read each filing’s risk factors for fuel, labor, interest rates, foreign exchange, weather, health events, consumer demand, regulation, destination dependence and refinancing exposure. The relevant risks and their weight can differ materially by company.

Make valuation comparisons only after aligning inputs

A multiple is useful only when its numerator, earnings measure, time period and peer group are defined consistently. Choose companies with similar business models first; then state how enterprise value treats debt and leases, which earnings period is used, and whether the share count is basic or diluted. Compare GAAP results with GAAP results or reconcile non-GAAP measures rather than assuming similarly named figures match.

A current stock ranking also requires contemporaneous share prices, diluted share counts, debt, comparable valuation calculations and forward estimates, plus an explicit investment horizon and risk context. The fiscal 2025 filings and one Q2 2026 result do not establish which security is most attractive at today’s market price.

A practical filing-based comparison checklist

  1. Classify the business: Identify revenue and profit from tickets, onboard spending, hotel fees, owned properties, vacation-ownership sales and financing, memberships or exchanges.
  2. Align the reporting basis: Record each company’s fiscal year-end, period, currency and geography before comparing results.
  3. Measure demand and pricing: Use the operating indicators suited to each business—such as occupancy or load factor, capacity days, yield, room-related measures or contract activity—and check each issuer’s definition.
  4. Test earnings quality: Compare GAAP operating income and net income with cash from operations, capital spending and reconciliations for adjusted measures.
  5. Inspect obligations: Review debt, maturities, interest, liquidity, leases, customer deposits and deferred revenue, along with the investment commitments specific to the business model.
  6. Set comparable valuation inputs: Use suitable peers and consistent treatment of enterprise value, debt, earnings period and diluted shares.
  7. Refresh volatile data: Update filings, share prices, share counts, debt and valuation calculations before drawing a current view.
