How to Compare Computer Science Degree Curricula Before Applying

The most reliable way to compare computer science degrees is to compare what you will study, when you can take it, and how much room you have to go deeper—not to compare course titles, rankings, or a single accreditation badge. Build a side-by-side worksheet from each university’s official catalog, degree map, prerequisites, and course descriptions. Record the catalog year and exact degree (for example, Bachelor of Science versus Bachelor of Arts), then evaluate six areas: core computing coverage, systems breadth, mathematics and science, sequencing, major project work, and elective flexibility. Finally, verify accreditation for the specific program and delivery format you would attend.

Start with an apples-to-apples evidence set

Choose the same evidence for every institution before you judge differences. Download or save the official catalog for the relevant year, the department’s degree requirements or four-year map, and descriptions for every required and elective course. Catalogs change, so the year matters: a web page describing a future plan is not interchangeable with the requirements that apply to your entering class.

Write down the exact degree name, campus, and delivery arrangement. A university can have separate curricula for a traditional campus, an online completion pathway, and a branch campus. Transfer students should also save the transfer-credit policy and any articulation guide. If a requirement appears in a sample plan but not in the catalog, treat the catalog as controlling and ask the department to resolve the discrepancy.

Use a comparison worksheet

Create one row for each program and one column for each decision area. Record the course code, title, credits, prerequisite chain, and catalog description rather than only checking whether a familiar title appears. Add a notes column for statements that require confirmation, such as whether an elective is offered every year or whether an online section has the same laboratory component.

Comparison area What to record Why it matters
Foundational computer science Programming, data structures, algorithms, theory, programming languages, software development Shows whether you build the conceptual and implementation base needed for advanced work.
Systems and breadth Architecture, operating systems, data management, networking, parallel or distributed computing, and listed newer fields Reveals exposure to computers at different levels and to the areas in which you may work.
Mathematics and science Course names, credits, mathematical rigor, laboratory or non-computing science requirements Indicates preparation for theory, modeling, and scientific or engineering applications.
Progression Prerequisites, term-by-term placement, course frequency, transfer rules Identifies bottlenecks that can delay graduation.
Applied work Capstone or integrative project, team and laboratory expectations, internship or research options listed officially Shows how the curriculum requires you to integrate knowledge in a substantial deliverable.
Choice and depth Elective credits, tracks, advanced-course access, and realistic scheduling Measures how well the degree can adapt to your specialty and goals.
Accreditation and delivery Program-level status, campus, degree, and online or in-person applicability Provides an external baseline while avoiding assumptions based on institutional accreditation alone.

Compare foundational computer-science coverage by topic

Course titles vary widely. “Software Engineering,” for example, may be a testing-and-process course at one school and a broad programming project at another. Map each requirement to the topics in its description and prerequisites. ABET’s 2025–2026 Computing Accreditation Commission criteria explicitly specify curriculum topics rather than particular course names, which is why title matching can give a false impression of equivalence.

Programming and software development

Check whether the required sequence moves from introductory programming to data structures and then to larger software construction. Record the general-purpose language used, but judge the learning outcomes rather than the language brand. Look for version control, testing, debugging, design, documentation, and collaborative development when those are stated in the description. A single introductory programming course followed by unrelated electives leaves a different foundation from a multi-course sequence with progressively larger projects.

Algorithms, complexity, and theory

Identify where students learn algorithm design and analysis, asymptotic complexity, computability or formal languages, and other computer-science theory. Some programs combine these topics; others spread them across separate courses. Read prerequisites: an algorithms course requiring data structures and discrete mathematics signals a deliberate progression, while a catalog that lists no prerequisites may leave the expected preparation unclear.

Programming-language concepts

Look for material on abstraction, type systems, language paradigms, interpreters or compilers, and runtime behavior. A course called “Programming Languages” may emphasize language use rather than concepts, so use the description and assignments or syllabus links that the department officially publishes.

Check systems breadth and levels of abstraction

A curriculum should show how software interacts with hardware and infrastructure. Record required or strongly recommended coverage of computer organization or architecture, operating systems, data management, networking, and parallel or distributed computing. Note whether these are lecture-only courses, laboratory courses, or project-based classes.

ABET’s CS program criteria call for systems exposure and systems at varying levels of abstraction, along with algorithms and complexity, theory, programming-language concepts, software development, and at least one general-purpose programming language. Use that list as a coverage check, not as a substitute for reading the local curriculum. A program might satisfy a topic in an integrated course, while another uses several specialized courses.

Look for current or specialized areas without mistaking them for the core

Record electives or required units in areas such as security and privacy, artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, graphics, data science, or embedded computing when the program lists them. Newer subjects can be valuable, but a long list of trendy electives does not compensate for missing algorithms, systems, or software-development foundations. Mark each area as required, available as an elective, or absent so the distinction remains visible.

Evaluate mathematics, statistics, and non-computing science

Math requirements affect both what you can understand and which upper-level courses you can enter. List each required course, its credit value, and its prerequisite. Distinguish a calculus course designed for science and engineering from a less rigorous survey course when the catalog provides that information.

For an ABET-accredited computer science program, the 2025–2026 criteria specify at least 15 semester credit hours in mathematics and statistics. The criteria include discrete mathematics, probability, and statistics with rigor at least equivalent to introductory calculus. They also call for non-computing science coursework. These are criteria for programs seeking that accreditation, not a legal requirement imposed on every computer science degree.

Use evidence about common U.S. patterns carefully

A 2024 analysis by Carla E. Brodley, McKenna Quam, and Mark A. Weiss examined 199 CS BS and BA degrees at 158 U.S. universities. It found broad agreement that discrete mathematics is critical and reported that calculus is almost always required for a CS BS. The analysis also found more variation in when students are expected to master those subjects. Use this finding to compare content and placement, not to assume that one sequence is ideal for every student or country.

Check how math gates computer-science courses

On your worksheet, draw arrows from mathematics prerequisites to the CS courses they unlock. If discrete mathematics is required before data structures or algorithms, taking it in the first year may be essential. If calculus is a prerequisite for scientific computing, graphics, or machine learning electives, delaying it can close options even when it is not part of the major’s first-year map. Record placement-test rules and whether transfer credit satisfies the exact requirement.

Map prerequisites and the real path to graduation

A four-year plan can hide a bottleneck. Convert each program’s prerequisite list into a term-by-term map and mark courses that are offered only once a year. Identify gateway courses—often introductory programming, data structures, discrete mathematics, or systems courses—that many later requirements depend on.

  1. Mark entry requirements. Record placement tests, introductory courses that can be skipped, and any co-requisite laboratory.
  2. Trace every required chain. For each upper-level course, follow prerequisites back to the first course in the sequence.
  3. Check offering frequency. Use the schedule archive or department confirmation to see whether a failed or missed course is available in the next term or only the next academic year.
  4. Test alternative starts. Map the plan for a student beginning in autumn, spring, or with transfer credit. A plan that works only for one intake may be a poor fit for your circumstances.
  5. Record completion rules. Note minimum grades, residency requirements, limits on pass/fail credit, and rules that require courses to be taken in a particular order.

When the catalog does not state how often a course runs or whether two prerequisites can be taken together, ask the department for a written answer. Keep that response with your worksheet and label it with the date, since scheduling practices can change.

Compare capstones, laboratories, and integrative work

Find the requirement that makes you combine multiple areas of the major. ABET’s CS criteria call for a major integrative project. Programs implement that requirement differently: a yearlong team capstone, a senior design sequence, a research thesis, or a substantial individual software project.

Questions to ask of the project requirement

  • Is the project required for every student or only for a concentration?
  • How many credits and terms does it occupy?
  • Are teams, a client, a laboratory, a public demonstration, or a written report required?
  • Must students take a preparation course first?
  • Are project topics assigned, proposed by students, or tied to faculty research?
  • Does the catalog describe assessment, code review, testing, security, or documentation?

Also record officially listed opportunities for internships, cooperative education, undergraduate research, or independent study. Treat them as opportunities rather than guaranteed placements unless the program states capacity or a required component. A polished capstone description is useful evidence of integration, but it does not by itself prove that every student receives the same project resources.

Measure elective room and specialization honestly

Count elective credits only after identifying restrictions. A degree may advertise many electives but require students to choose from a short list, reserve several credits for mathematics, or complete a concentration with little free choice. Separate free electives from CS electives and from courses that must be at the 300- or 400-level.

Test whether advanced choices are reachable

For each specialization you are considering, list the prerequisite chain and the term in which the course is normally offered. Then test a realistic schedule that includes general education, math, the core, and the capstone. If two attractive electives meet at the same time or one is offered every other year, record the conflict rather than counting both as available.

Look for permission rules, enrollment caps, and whether graduate courses can count toward the bachelor’s degree. A concentration title has little value if the required courses are not offered during your expected enrollment period. Conversely, a program without formal tracks may provide substantial depth through a flexible elective block.

Use accreditation as a baseline, not a verdict

ABET’s Computing Accreditation Commission accredits associate, bachelor’s, and master’s computing programs. Its published criteria combine technical, professional, and general-education expectations, including security and privacy, the effects of computing, relevant mathematics and statistics, science, and a major project. For computer science specifically, the criteria include the topic coverage and credit-hour expectations described above.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These criteria apply to programs seeking ABET accreditation; they are not a universal academic or legal requirement for every CS degree. Accreditation can confirm that a program was evaluated against a defined framework, but it cannot tell you whether the timetable fits your work obligations, whether a desired elective will run, or whether the teaching style suits you.

Verify the exact program and format

  1. Open ABET’s official program search and locate the exact degree and campus.
  2. Check the accreditation status and the effective or review dates shown for that listing.
  3. Confirm that the listing covers the delivery arrangement you will attend. ABET states that online programs are evaluated using the same criteria as programs delivered in other formats, but the specific program still must be listed.
  4. Compare the listing with the university catalog’s degree name. Do not infer program-level accreditation from the university’s institutional accreditation.

If no listing appears, record “not ABET-accredited” or “status not confirmed” and continue evaluating the curriculum. Non-accredited programs can still be legitimate choices; the consequence depends on your goals, employer or licensing expectations, and transfer plans.

Turn the worksheet into a decision

After collecting evidence, score each program against your own priorities rather than assigning a universal winner. Give the greatest weight to requirements that are difficult to change later: prerequisite sequencing, math preparation, required core coverage, and the availability of advanced courses. Give lower weight to labels that do not alter what you will actually study.

A practical scoring process

  1. Define your target. Write the roles, graduate study, or application area you are preparing for, plus constraints such as location, work schedule, transfer status, or a need for online delivery.
  2. Set minimums. Decide which topics, math courses, project experiences, and delivery conditions are non-negotiable.
  3. Score evidence. Use a simple scale such as 0 for absent, 1 for available but constrained, and 2 for clearly required or reliably available. Keep a citation note to the catalog page or official description for every score.
  4. Apply a feasibility check. Rebuild the plan with your expected starting term and prior credit. A program that scores well but cannot be completed on your timeline should not rank first.
  5. Resolve unknowns. Email the department or registrar about any unverified offering, prerequisite, transfer, or accreditation detail. Lower confidence—not the academic score—when an answer is still pending.

Common comparison mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Matching titles mechanically: Two “Computer Architecture” courses can cover different levels. Read descriptions, prerequisites, and laboratory expectations.
  • Counting every listed elective: Remove courses blocked by prerequisites, scheduling conflicts, permission rules, or infrequent offerings.
  • Ignoring the catalog year: Save the version that governs your entry year and ask how transition rules affect you.
  • Treating accreditation as a ranking: Accreditation is a baseline evaluation, not evidence that one program is a better personal fit.
  • Assuming online means identical logistics: Criteria may be the same, while meeting times, proctored assessments, laboratories, and course availability differ. Verify the format-specific plan.
  • Overlooking transfer and placement rules: A course that appears complete on paper may not satisfy a required grade, residency rule, or exact prerequisite.
  • Chasing fashionable subjects before foundations: Ensure algorithms, theory, software development, systems, and mathematics are covered before valuing a long specialty list.

A final pre-application checklist

  • Exact degree name, campus, delivery format, and applicable catalog year recorded.
  • Required programming, data structures, algorithms, theory, language concepts, and software-development topics mapped from descriptions.
  • Architecture, operating systems, data management, networking, and parallel or distributed coverage identified.
  • Mathematics, statistics, discrete mathematics, calculus, and non-computing science requirements listed with credits and prerequisites.
  • Gateway courses, offering frequency, minimum grades, and transfer treatment checked.
  • Capstone or major integrative project requirements documented, including team, laboratory, and assessment expectations.
  • Elective and concentration rules tested against a realistic schedule.
  • ABET status checked for the exact program and delivery arrangement, without treating it as the sole quality measure.
  • Open questions sent to the department and dated answers saved with the worksheet.
