Match the itinerary, date, length, port, cabin, guest count, and currency, then account for taxes, fees, gratuities, and only the add-ons you expect to use. Neither line is universally cheaper, and a perk is valuable only if it matters to your trip.
Start with a like-for-like sailing
Choose a Carnival sailing and a Royal Caribbean sailing that are as similar as possible before comparing prices. A lower advertised fare may reflect a different itinerary, date, cabin, occupancy, promotion, or booking market rather than a lower cost for an equivalent cruise.

- Match destination and itinerary, departure date, cruise length, and embarkation port.
- Use the same cabin category and guest count, and compare prices in the same currency.
- Check the promotion terms: offers may be limited by cabin, occupancy, or booking window.
- Use the final checkout total for each matched sailing, not a starting fare or an unitemized advertised price.
Fares and fees can change. Recheck the current offer and itemized booking invoice before you book.
Compare the full price, not just the fare
Carnival’s ticket terms distinguish the Cruise Fare from Required Cruise Fees and Expenses and Government Taxes and Fees, and define the Total Cruise Price as those components combined. Royal Caribbean says taxes, fees, and port expenses vary by sailing and directs customers to check current pricing. The terms and displayed totals are not interchangeable across markets, so use the actual quote for each sailing.

| Cost to compare | How to assess it |
|---|---|
| Fare and required charges | Use the sailing’s itemized checkout total. Carnival names cruise fare, required cruise fees and expenses, and government taxes and fees as distinct components of its Total Cruise Price. |
| Taxes, fees, and port expenses | Check the live quote for the specific sailing and market; amounts vary by sailing. Royal Caribbean’s UK tax examples are itinerary- and booking-date-specific and should not be generalized to other markets. |
| Gratuities | Check whether the quote includes prepaid gratuities or whether they will be paid separately or posted onboard. Carnival’s cited U.S.-dollar recommendations are $17 per person per day for standard staterooms and $19 for suites, according to its official help page accessed October 4, 2026. These are recommended onboard guidelines, not a comparative average. |
| Optional purchases | Add only the expected cost of extras you would actually buy, such as drinks beyond included options, Wi-Fi, specialty dining, or excursions. |
For Royal Caribbean, the cited Canada English guest terms describe cruise fare as covering carriage, full board, and ordinary food and entertainment while excluding taxes and fees and listing many paid items. Those terms apply to that market; do not treat them as universal booking rules.
What the fares include—and where they differ
Both lines include accommodation, dining, and entertainment in broad terms, but the specific venues, drinks, activities, and exceptions can differ by ship and sailing. Compare what is actually included on the ships you are considering rather than assuming the labels mean identical experiences.
| Category | Carnival | Royal Caribbean |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | Included as part of the cruise booking. | The fare includes the stateroom. |
| Dining | Dining in main dining and/or Lido venues is listed as included; exact venues can depend on the ship. Specialty restaurants may cost extra. | Complimentary dining is included; specialty dining may cost extra. |
| Drinks | Basic included drinks listed by Carnival include non-bottled water, lemonade, iced tea, hot chocolate, and non-specialty coffee and tea. Bar drinks, including alcoholic and some non-alcoholic choices, may cost extra. | A beverage package is an optional upgrade. Check the sailing’s current details for which drinks are included without one. |
| Entertainment and activities | Entertainment and activities are part of the onboard offering; check the ship’s details for the specific options. | Entertainment and activities are included in broad terms. Arcade play and bingo are among the optional paid activities listed by Royal Caribbean. |
| Internet | Internet is listed among potential extras. | Wi-Fi is listed as an optional upgrade. |
| Destination and excursions | Shore excursions are potential extras. | Private-destination access is included on applicable sailings; shore excursions are optional purchases. |
Other potential extras named by the lines include photos, casino play, and spa services on Carnival, and spa treatments and casino gaming on Royal Caribbean. Availability and pricing can vary by ship and market; check the details for the sailing rather than treating every listed extra as available everywhere.
Calculate the cost of the trip you would actually take
Once you have each sailing’s checkout total, add the likely cost of relevant extras. A package is not automatically a saving because it is bundled: its value depends on what you would buy separately and whether its terms fit your trip.

- Write down the final quoted total for each matched sailing, including taxes, fees, and port expenses.
- Add expected gratuities, accounting for whether they are prepaid or charged separately. For Carnival, verify the current recommended amount and how it will be handled.
- Estimate only the add-ons you expect to use: for example, beverage purchases, Wi-Fi, specialty meals, or excursions.
- Compare the resulting totals, then weigh any included services you value against the price difference.
- Recheck the offer and invoice before booking, since displayed prices, fees, and policies can change.
For instance, if one sailing’s total is higher but includes a feature you would otherwise pay for and genuinely plan to use, compare that incremental cost with the feature’s value to you. If you would not use it, do not count it as a saving.

The fare comparison depends on the sailing, cabin, occupancy, taxes and port expenses, promotion, and market. The official information cited here does not establish an average Carnival-versus-Royal Caribbean fare difference or a universal savings figure. Decide between specific sailings using their current totals and the inclusions relevant to your travel plans.

Regional terms also matter. Carnival’s cited gratuity amounts are in U.S. dollars, Royal Caribbean’s cited guest terms are for Canada, and its cited UK tax examples are specific to that market and booking context. Check the current booking terms for your own market.
