How to Compare Car Loan Offers by Interest Rate, Fees, and Total Repayment

Compare car loans using written offers for the same amount financed, term, down payment, and add-ons—not the monthly payment alone. Check the interest rate and APR separately, then compare fees, finance charge, total of payments, and total purchase cost. A lower payment can cost more overall if it comes with a longer term.

Start with offers based on the same deal

A loan offer is only comparable with another when the assumptions behind both offers match. Ask each lender to quote the same vehicle transaction with the same down payment or trade-in, amount financed, and loan term. Also identify any products or fees included in the amount financed. If one offer assumes a larger down payment or excludes an add-on that another includes, its payment and total cost will not be an apples-to-apples comparison.

  • Vehicle price and any other transaction amounts included in the loan.
  • Down payment and trade-in amount.
  • Amount financed.
  • Loan term and number of payments.
  • Any financed fees or optional products.

Keep a copy of the assumptions you used when asking for each quote. When a lender gives you a payment, ask what amount financed, term, down payment, and products that payment assumes. A payment by itself is not enough to recreate the offer: the same monthly figure can result from different loan balances, terms, rates, or included items. If a quote is based on a different version of the transaction, ask for a revised one using your comparison assumptions.

Compare financing from more than one source. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) recommends seeking an offer before visiting the dealer and considering banks, credit unions, and dealer financing. A dealer may also present manufacturer or other promotional financing, but eligibility can depend on the borrower or transaction. Get the promotion’s written terms and compare the full cost with other offers rather than assuming a low advertised rate makes it the cheapest option. The CFPB’s auto-loan rate guidance was last reviewed September 24, 2024.

A dealer-arranged offer can be compared with a bank or credit union offer using the same figures: APR, interest rate, fees and finance charge, amount financed, term, payment, total payments, and total purchase cost. A promotional rate is relevant only if you qualify and the written terms apply to the vehicle and transaction you are considering. Ask for those terms in writing and compare them with the other actual offers available to you. The lowest advertised rate is not automatically the lowest-cost offer for every buyer.

If you use a comparison site, understand what personal and financial information you are submitting and whether it may be shared with prospective lenders. An estimate or prequalification is useful for shopping, but it is not a substitute for the final written disclosure and approved terms. Keep estimates separate from finalized offers in your notes so you do not accidentally compare a preliminary figure with a contract-ready one.

Understand interest rate versus APR

The interest rate is the rate charged on the amount borrowed. APR, or annual percentage rate, expresses the interest rate plus certain lender fees as a yearly rate. The CFPB’s explanation, last reviewed August 28, 2026, puts it this way: “The APR is the interest rate plus any additional fees charged by the lender.” Because APR incorporates some fees, it can help compare the cost of credit—but it does not replace checking the dollar amounts in the contract.

Record both figures for each offer. Compare APR with APR, not one lender’s APR with another lender’s interest rate. Also check the finance charge and any listed fees: APR is a rate, while those disclosures show dollar costs. Different loan terms, amounts financed, and fee treatments can affect the comparison, so do not use APR as the only deciding figure.

Think of APR as one useful comparison measure, not a summary of everything in the transaction. It helps account for the interest rate and certain fees, but you still need to know the dollars you will borrow and repay. Two offers may have different terms or financed amounts; in that case, a difference in APR does not by itself tell you which offer fits your budget or has the lower total purchase cost. Use the APR alongside the term, finance charge, payment schedule, and total of payments.

Do not try to infer an APR from a monthly payment or an advertised rate. Ask each lender for its written APR and interest rate, then check that those figures appear in the final disclosure. If an estimate does not show the APR or fees, treat it as incomplete for comparison and request the missing written terms.

Build a comparison table from the written offers

Use a worksheet or your own table to capture the figures in the same order for every lender. The CFPB provides a free auto-loan shopping worksheet and says borrowers can use a loan calculator or ask the lender or dealer for the payment amount. A separate financial calculator is optional; the lender’s written terms and disclosures control.

Offer detail What to record Why it matters
Interest rate The stated rate charged on the loan Shows the rate applied to the borrowed principal; keep it distinct from APR.
APR The annual percentage rate Includes the interest rate and certain lender fees, making it useful for like-for-like rate comparisons.
Amount financed The amount of credit provided under the offer Different amounts—often because of down payments, trade-ins, fees, or add-ons—produce different payments and repayment totals.
Term and payment schedule Length of the loan, payment count, and payment amount A longer term may reduce each payment while increasing total interest.
Finance charge and fees Disclosed finance charge and itemized charges Shows dollar costs over the loan and helps you identify what is required or optional.
Total of payments The total of scheduled payments over the loan Lets you compare repayment over the full term rather than by one monthly bill.
Total purchase cost Total payments plus down payment or trade-in, as applicable Shows a broader cost of the financed purchase, not just the credit portion.
Optional products Each product’s cost and whether it is included in the loan Financed add-ons increase the amount borrowed and can increase total repayment.

When a figure is missing from an estimate, ask the lender for the written number rather than filling it in from another offer. A quote is not a useful comparison if you cannot tell what it includes.

For each offer, keep the lender or dealer’s name and the date alongside the figures. That makes it easier to distinguish revised quotes and to check whether a promotion or estimate is still the one being discussed. Record payment amount and number of payments as separate entries: the monthly amount does not show how many payments are scheduled. Likewise, record the disclosed total of payments instead of calculating a substitute from rounded monthly figures.

The CFPB worksheet offers a way to put multiple offers side by side, and the lender or dealer can provide a payment figure if you do not want to calculate it yourself. A loan calculator or financial calculator can be a convenient check, but it is not required. Do not treat a calculator result as a replacement for the written disclosure; the actual offer and final contract terms are what matter.

Ask what fees and add-ons are included

Review the contract and disclosures for the finance charge and listed fees. Ask the lender or dealer to identify which charges are required for that offer and which products are optional. Do not assume every fee is avoidable, and do not assume every add-on is automatically a poor choice; the key is to understand its cost, whether you want it, and whether it has been added to the borrowed amount.

Extended warranties and optional credit insurance are examples of add-ons that can raise the amount financed when included in the loan. GAP coverage is optional. If you are considering it, the CFPB advises shopping around because prices can vary. Request revised written figures without each optional product you do not want. That makes the change in amount financed, payment, APR, and total repayment visible instead of leaving you to infer the effect from a bundled quote.

Compare offers both with and without the same optional products if you are still deciding. Otherwise, a quote that includes an add-on may appear more expensive simply because it covers more, or it may disguise the extra cost inside a higher loan balance.

Ask the dealer or lender to show the price of each optional product separately and to identify whether it is included in the loan balance. Then request a version of the offer without any item you do not want. The point is not that every optional product is unsuitable; it is that you should be able to decide whether you want it with its price visible. When the product is financed, the borrowed amount rises, so the effect may extend beyond the product’s listed price to the repayment of that amount over the loan.

Do not assume that a single bundled figure answers whether an item is required. Ask directly which charges are required and which are optional, and have the offer revised so you can compare the alternatives. Review the revised amount financed and total costs, not only the monthly difference. If the figures change in a way you cannot explain, ask for an itemized explanation before proceeding.

Compare full repayment, not just the monthly payment

The monthly payment answers whether a scheduled bill may fit your budget; it does not tell you what the loan will cost over its full term. Record the payment count and total of payments, then compare the finance charge and total purchase cost as well. Include the down payment or trade-in when comparing the total cost of the purchase, using the same assumptions for each offer.

A CFPB example illustrates how term changes the trade-off for a $20,000 loan at a 4.75% interest rate. These are example figures published in CFPB guidance last reviewed in 2024, not current market quotes:

Loan term Example monthly payment Example total interest
36 months $597 $1,498
48 months $458 $1,999
60 months $375 $2,508
72 months $320 $3,024

In that illustration, stretching repayment from 36 to 72 months lowers the monthly payment but more than doubles the total interest. The lower payment is not a discount: it reflects paying the balance over more months. Choose a term by weighing the payment against the full repayment cost and your budget, not by treating the smallest monthly figure as the best offer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The CFPB worksheet has a separate illustration: at 3.5% interest over 48 months, a $353.22 payment produces $16,955 in payments; adding a $6,000 down payment or trade-in gives a $22,955 total purchase cost, with $1,155 total interest. These are worksheet example numbers, not a recommended rate, price, or current quote. Use the worksheet’s method to compare your own written offers.

The examples show why two questions belong together: “Can I manage this payment?” and “What will the full repayment cost?” A longer term can make the first answer easier while making the second number larger. A short-term offer may have a higher scheduled payment, so do not select it without checking that the payment works for your budget. Conversely, do not choose a longer term solely because its monthly figure looks comfortable without considering its total interest and total payments.

When you calculate total purchase cost, use the same approach for each offer. Total payments represent the scheduled credit payments; adding the down payment or trade-in gives a broader comparison of the purchase cost as illustrated by the CFPB worksheet. Avoid comparing one offer’s total payments with another offer’s total purchase cost, since those are not the same measure. Keep the amount financed and any add-ons consistent as well.

Payment calculators can help you check how a stated amount, rate, and term relate, but the free CFPB worksheet or a payment figure from the lender or dealer may be enough. If a calculator output differs from the quote, do not assume either number is correct without checking the assumptions. Confirm the rate, amount financed, term, payment count, and included fees or products with the lender. The written disclosure controls over a generic estimate.

Check the final disclosure before signing

In the United States, the Truth in Lending Act (TILA) disclosure provides key loan terms before a consumer finalizes an auto loan. Read the final disclosure and compare it with the offer you agreed to. The CFPB advises checking:

  • APR and interest rate.
  • Amount financed and finance charge.
  • Total of payments and total sale price.
  • Number and amount of payments.
  • Late fees and any prepayment penalty or other prepayment terms.

If the final figures differ from the quote, pause and ask the lender or dealer to explain the difference before accepting. Verify that the amount financed, term, payment schedule, fees, and add-ons match the deal you intended. Do not sign based only on a verbal explanation or a monthly payment that seems familiar.

Use the disclosure as a final cross-check, not as a formality after you have already decided. Compare its APR, amount financed, finance charge, total of payments, total sale price, payment count, and payment amount with your notes. Check late fees and the stated prepayment terms as well. If a line is unclear, ask what it means and how it relates to the quote. If an optional item appears that you did not request, or a number differs from what you agreed to, ask for corrected written terms before signing.

The TILA disclosure is especially useful because it puts key loan costs and payment terms in a form you can review before finalizing. It does not remove the need to inspect the rest of the contract or understand charges and products included in the transaction. Take time to resolve discrepancies rather than letting a familiar payment amount reassure you when the term or amount financed has changed.

Shop for offers without overreading rate-shopping guidance

Get competing offers before you settle on financing, and ask each source for terms in writing. CFPB guidance says that obtaining rate quotes within a 14-to-45-day period can minimize credit-score impact. The exact effect depends on the scoring model and circumstances, so that range is not a universal guarantee that every inquiry will be treated the same way. Ask lenders how they handle quote requests and avoid assuming that a comparison site or preliminary estimate is a final approval.

Market rates, lender fees, dealer promotions, and approval terms vary with the borrower and offer. There is no single current rate in the CFPB guidance that can determine which loan is best for every buyer. A lender’s offer is specific to its assumptions and your qualification; compare the written terms you actually receive.

Shopping several sources is useful because a bank, credit union, and dealer may present different terms. The comparison only helps if you keep the basis consistent and distinguish an estimate from an approved offer. Ask whether a quote is preliminary, what assumptions it uses, and what written terms will be available for review. CFPB’s 14-to-45-day guidance is about minimizing potential score impact, not a promise that every inquiry has an identical effect in every circumstance.

A practical decision rule

First eliminate offers that do not fit your budget or do not match the transaction assumptions. Among the offers that remain, compare APR, dollar fees and finance charge, amount financed, and total payments. Consider the down payment or trade-in to compare the overall purchase cost. If one offer has a lower payment only because its term is longer, decide whether the extra total interest is worth that payment reduction. Choose based on the cost and terms you understand and can afford—not one attractive number on a quote.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before making that choice, confirm that each remaining offer includes the same vehicle transaction and the same optional products, or make the differences explicit. Check both rates, all disclosed dollar figures, and the full payment schedule. If you cannot tell what a quote includes, it is not ready for a fair comparison: ask for clarification or a revised written offer. Then use the final disclosure to confirm the offer still matches before signing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I compare besides the monthly payment?

Compare the interest rate and APR, amount financed, loan term and payment count, finance charge and fees, total of payments, and total purchase cost. Also check down payment or trade-in assumptions and any optional products included in the loan. A payment alone does not show the term or full repayment cost.

Is APR the same as the interest rate on a car loan?

No. The interest rate describes the rate charged on the amount borrowed. APR expresses the interest rate plus certain lender fees as a yearly rate. Compare APR with APR, but also inspect the dollar fees, finance charge, amount financed, and total payments.

Why can a lower monthly payment cost more overall?

A longer term spreads repayment across more months and can reduce each payment while increasing total interest. In a CFPB illustration for a $20,000 loan at 4.75%, the 36-month option has a $597 payment and $1,498 total interest, while the 72-month option has a $320 payment and $3,024 total interest. Those figures are examples, not current market quotes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I compare dealer financing with a bank or credit union offer?

Yes. The CFPB recommends considering banks, credit unions, and dealer financing and seeking an offer before visiting the dealer. Ask each source for written terms based on the same amount financed, term, down payment or trade-in, and add-ons. Check promotional financing eligibility and compare the complete written costs.

Are add-ons such as GAP coverage or an extended warranty required?

Ask the lender or dealer which charges are required and which products are optional. Extended warranties and optional credit insurance can raise the amount financed when included. GAP coverage is optional; the CFPB advises shopping around if you want it because prices can vary. Request revised figures without products you do not want.

What should I check in the TILA disclosure before signing?

Check APR, interest rate, amount financed, finance charge, total of payments, total sale price, payment count and amount, late fees, and any prepayment penalty or other prepayment terms. Compare the disclosure with the offer you agreed to and ask about differences before accepting.

Do I need a financial calculator to compare offers?

No. The CFPB provides a free auto-loan shopping worksheet, and you can ask the lender or dealer for the monthly payment. A calculator is optional for checking figures; use the written disclosure and final loan terms as the authority.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Compare written offers on the same transaction assumptions, then weigh APR and fees alongside amount financed, term, total payments, and total purchase cost. A smaller monthly payment may come with more total interest. Confirm every figure—including optional products and prepayment terms—in the final disclosure before signing.
