For purchases billed in U.S. dollars, compare two things: whether your card converts each purchase to Canadian dollars, and what it costs to pay the card’s balance. A U.S.-dollar account can avoid converting USD purchases into CAD on the card, but you must repay it in USD. A Canadian-dollar card that waives foreign-currency fees is easier to repay in CAD, but the exchange rate still applies. Neither option is automatically cheaper for everyone.
How Canadian cards convert U.S.-dollar purchases
A card purchase made in a foreign currency is generally converted to Canadian dollars for a CAD-billed account. The card agreement sets how the conversion is handled and whether an issuer conversion charge applies. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) explains that the conversion charge is applied after the amount is converted to Canadian dollars: How credit cards work.

“No foreign transaction fee” does not mean “no exchange rate.” The card network or issuer still converts the purchase amount; the no-fee term means the issuer waives the applicable foreign-currency fee under that card’s terms. Mastercard notes that the issuer determines the cardholder’s conversion charges, and its calculator uses rates drawn from multiple market sources. Treat a calculator result as an estimate, then check the issuer agreement and posted statement amount: Mastercard currency converter.
Illustrative fee example
FCAC illustrates the effect of a 2.5% fee with a €1,000 purchase converted at an example rate of 1.45 CAD per euro: €1,000 × 1.45 = C$1,450, then C$1,450 × 2.5% = C$36.25, for C$1,486.25 total. Compare a USD account with a CAD card that waives FX fees
These are two different approaches, not a ranking of every Canadian credit card. Scotiabank’s products provide concrete examples; confirm current fees and terms with the issuer before applying.

Choose based on your spending and repayment currency
- Estimate actual USD-billed spending. Include travel, online orders, and subscriptions, but distinguish purchases charged in USD from purchases a merchant bills in CAD. A U.S. website or seller does not by itself establish the billing currency; check the checkout total or receipt.
- For a USD account card, price the repayment route. Add its annual fee and determine whether you can pay from a USD account or would need to convert money for each bill. A card’s avoided conversion fee on USD purchases may not offset the annual fee or the cost and inconvenience of obtaining USD.
- For a CAD card, read the card-specific agreement. Check the fee on foreign-currency purchases and how conversion is defined. Do not assume that a network exchange-rate calculator includes the issuer’s charges.
- Subtract fees before valuing rewards. Count points, insurance, or other benefits only at the value you can realistically redeem, and check eligibility and conditions. A reward headline is not a saving if the annual cost exceeds the value you receive.
Scotiabank describes a 2.5% foreign-currency conversion fee in its general fee information, with card-specific exceptions; that figure should not be generalized to every Canadian issuer or card: Scotiabank rates and fees. Fees, eligibility, reward terms, and exchange processing can change.

A merchant or ATM may offer dynamic currency conversion (DCC): it converts the purchase from USD to CAD immediately, using a rate that can include additional fees. Visa says a DCC offer should disclose both the local and cardholder-currency amounts, the exchange rate, and added fees. If those details are missing or you feel pressured, Visa recommends declining the conversion and paying in the local currency, then letting your card’s terms govern conversion: Visa guidance on dynamic currency conversion.

- Compare the offered CAD amount and disclosed rate or fees with the card’s own conversion terms.
- Do not assume that seeing a CAD amount at checkout makes it cheaper or safer.
- Keep the receipt so you can compare the billed amount with what you accepted.
Check posted purchases and refunds
Compare the statement’s posted amount with your receipt and the card’s conversion terms. A refund can appear as a different CAD amount from the original purchase if the exchange rate changes before the refund is processed; FCAC notes that this can happen. Keep both records if the difference needs explaining.
