The dependable way to compare UK broadband is to work in this order: check which services reach your address, decide what your household actually does online, compare realistic and guaranteed speeds, then calculate the complete contract cost and read every price-rise and exit term. A headline monthly price or an advertised download figure alone cannot tell you which deal is best.
This guide follows the checks set out by Ofcom’s broadband choosing guide, its contract checklist and its speed guidance, with qualifications for rules and figures that can change.

1. Check what is available at your address before comparing prices
Broadband options are address-specific. Two homes on the same street can receive different technologies, speed estimates or guarantees, so begin with Ofcom’s free address checker rather than a national advert or a neighbour’s experience. Enter the complete postcode and address, and save the results for each provider you consider.
The checker may show wired and wireless alternatives. If a fixed line is limited or unavailable, Ofcom identifies 5G, fixed wireless and satellite as possible alternatives. Their speeds and reliability depend strongly on local coverage, line of sight, congestion and equipment, so compare the address-level estimate rather than assuming that a technology label guarantees a particular result.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
| Connection type | What to establish at your address | Typical comparison issue |
|---|---|---|
| Full fibre (FTTP) | Whether fibre runs all the way to the premises and the exact download and upload estimates | Usually faster and more reliable than part fibre, but availability is not universal |
| Part fibre (FTTC) | Where the fibre ends and how much copper line remains | Performance varies with line length and condition |
| Cable | Serviceable address, advertised and busy-time speeds, upload rate | Shared network conditions can affect results at busy times |
| Fixed wireless or 5G | Signal strength, installation requirements, data limits and busy-time estimates | Location and congestion can change speed and reliability |
| Satellite | Dish installation, data policy, latency and weather-related limitations | Can reach difficult locations but may suit interactive uses less well |
Ofcom’s comparison guidance is available at ofcom.org.uk/phones-and-broadband/saving-money/choosing-broadband. Availability, tariffs and speed estimates can change, so recheck immediately before ordering.
2. Match the speed tier to the way your household uses the connection
Speed is a shared household resource. Count the people and devices likely to be active at the same time, not just the fastest activity one person performs. A video call, several high-definition streams, cloud backups, game downloads and work traffic can overlap.
| Ofcom category | Download range | Indicative fit |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Up to 30 Mbit/s | Basic browsing, email and standard-definition video for lighter use |
| Superfast | 30 to 300 Mbit/s | Many everyday households, home working, video calls and streaming |
| Ultrafast | 300 Mbit/s or more | Several simultaneous users, heavy streaming, gaming or large downloads |
These are broad categories, not a prescription that every household needs the highest tier. A single light user may gain little from an ultrafast package, while a larger home may notice contention even when an individual device appears fast. Upload speed matters for video conferencing, sending large files, live broadcasting and cloud backups; record it alongside download speed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use capacity, not marketing labels
- List simultaneous activities during the busiest period, especially between 8pm and 10pm, the busy-time window cited in Ofcom’s fixed-broadband guidance for homes.
- Identify activities that are sensitive to delay, such as calls and online games, separately from activities that mainly need throughput, such as downloads.
- Allow for future use only when you have a concrete reason, such as more people working from home or adding a cloud-camera system; do not pay for an abstract “future-proof” label.
3. Compare the speed information that actually predicts your experience
Every quote should be read as a set of speed measures, not one headline number. Providers should explain the minimum, normally available, maximum and advertised download and upload speeds. They should also provide a personalised minimum guaranteed speed for the service.
“Your provider should always give you a minimum guaranteed speed for your broadband service.”

| Measure | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Advertised speed | Useful for identifying the package tier, but not a promise of the speed delivered at every moment |
| Busy-time estimate | Shows expected performance when demand is high; compare the estimate for 8–10pm rather than an off-peak figure alone |
| Normally available speed | Indicates the usual service level under the provider’s stated conditions |
| Maximum speed | Describes the upper end of the offer, not what every address will receive |
| Minimum guaranteed speed | The personalised threshold to use when deciding whether the deal meets your needs and when raising a speed complaint |
| Upload speed | Important for calls, remote work, file sharing, livestreaming and backups; do not compare download only |
Keep a copy of the pre-contract information showing these figures. If the order page displays only a tier name, ask for the address-specific estimate and minimum guarantee before accepting.
4. Compare the technology and service quality, not just the number of megabits
Ofcom says full fibre generally offers faster and more reliable performance than part fibre. That is a useful starting distinction, but the actual line, network load and home setup still matter. Wireless services can vary by location and congestion, while satellite connections may have higher latency that affects interactive applications even when a download test looks adequate.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Ask how faults are reported, the target repair process, what compensation arrangements apply and how speed complaints are handled. Customer service is part of the service you are buying: a cheaper tariff can be poor value if a fault leaves the household without a workable connection and the remedy is unclear.
5. Calculate the total cost over the minimum term
Compare the pounds paid over the whole commitment, not the first-month headline. Add every recurring price at every stated stage, any setup or installation charge, and other compulsory fees. If the tariff has a promotional period followed by a higher rate, include both periods in the total.
Use this calculation for each offer:
total contract cost = (months at price 1 × price 1) + (months at price 2 × price 2) + one-off charges

Then divide the result by the number of months if you want a comparable monthly equivalent. Keep the undiscounted monthly price visible as well: it is the amount that may apply after the promotion or when you renew.
| Cost item | Question to answer before ordering |
|---|---|
| Introductory rate | How many months does it last, and is the discount automatic? |
| Later monthly rate | What exact price follows the promotion, and from which date? |
| One-off charges | Are installation, activation, delivery or engineer visits compulsory? |
| Equipment | Is a router included, rented, replaced on upgrade or chargeable if not returned? |
| Optional extras | Are security, television, calls or data allowances included or separately billed? |
| Exit cost | What early termination charge applies if you leave during the minimum term? |
Ofcom’s new-contract checklist says residential and small-business contracts should be no longer than 24 months. Ofcom’s choosing guide says 18- and 24-month minimum terms are common. Treat the minimum term as a cost exposure: the lowest monthly figure is not necessarily the lowest commitment.
6. Read the minimum term, renewal and cancellation rules
Record the minimum term in months, the date it begins, what happens at the end, and any notice period. Check whether the service rolls onto a standard rate, renews for another fixed term only with your consent, or continues on a cancellable basis. The provider’s pre-contract summary should state these conditions.
Cooling-off period
Ofcom’s choosing guide says an online, telephone or doorstep sign-up can generally be cancelled within 14 days. It notes that this may not apply to an in-store sign-up. If you ask for installation or service activation during that period, check how work already performed and equipment use affect cancellation. Your contract and circumstances control the precise outcome.
Early termination
Before switching during a minimum term, request the exact early termination charge and any equipment-return requirement. A new provider using One Touch Switch can manage the transfer; the old provider should send information about implications such as termination fees and returned equipment. Confirm the date on which the old service stops so you do not create an avoidable gap or double payment.

- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
7. Understand scheduled price rises and your rights when a price changes
Separate a rise written into the contract from an increase introduced later. Ofcom says a rise specified in advance must be clear before sign-up, stated in pounds and pence and accompanied by the date it takes effect. Put each scheduled amount into your total-cost calculation.
If a provider raises the price beyond what the agreement specified, it must give at least one month’s notice and a right to leave without an early termination penalty. An increase that you already agreed to in the contract does not automatically create the same penalty-free exit right. Read the exact wording in the contract and the notice you receive. Ofcom’s current contract guidance is at ofcom.org.uk/phones-and-broadband/service-quality/contracts; the GOV.UK Telecoms Consumer Charter also sets out provider commitments on clear contract information and legacy inflation-linked increases.
8. Use the speed guarantee and complaint remedy correctly
If your measured service is below the promised level, contact the provider and quote the minimum guaranteed speed in your contract. Follow its diagnostic process and keep dates, test results and reference numbers.
For providers covered by Ofcom’s Broadband Speeds Code of Practice, a network-side fault that is not fixed within 30 days gives the customer the right to leave without an early exit fee. Ofcom’s retrieved guidance lists BT, EE, NOW Broadband, Plusnet, Sky, TalkTalk, Utility Warehouse, Virgin Media and Zen Internet as covered. Participation can change, so confirm that the code applies to the specific contract before relying on this remedy.

Test without mistaking Wi-Fi for the line speed
Wi-Fi can reduce the speed measured by a phone or laptop. Ofcom says the most accurate test uses a computer or tablet connected directly to the router with an Ethernet cable. Test at different times, including the 8–10pm busy period, and note whether the device was wired. A wired test improves measurement accuracy; it does not increase the broadband service itself. Ofcom’s speed guidance is at ofcom.org.uk/phones-and-broadband/coverage-and-speeds/broadband-speeds-code-practice.

9. Build a side-by-side comparison that exposes the real trade-offs
For every address-eligible deal, record the same fields. This prevents a low introductory price or a large download number from hiding an expensive term or weak guarantee.
| Comparison axis | Information to record |
|---|---|
| Availability and technology | Full fibre, part fibre, cable, fixed wireless, 5G or satellite; confirmation that the option serves the exact address |
| Performance | Advertised, busy-time, normally available and maximum download speeds; upload speed; personalised minimum guarantee |
| Household fit | People and concurrent calls, streams, gaming, downloads and home-working sessions |
| Full price | Each monthly price stage, disclosed mid-contract changes, setup fees and compulsory extras; calculated term total |
| Commitment | Minimum term, end-of-term treatment, notice period, early termination charge and equipment return |
| Service and remedy | Support channels, repair process, compensation, speed complaint route and applicable code participation |
Only compare totals calculated over the same number of months. If one quote omits a value, ask the provider for it rather than treating the omission as zero or assuming it matches another deal.
10. Check whether a social tariff applies
People receiving certain benefits, including Universal Credit or Pension Credit, might qualify for a lower-cost social tariff. Ofcom describes social tariffs as having no mid-contract price rises. Eligibility, speeds, availability and current prices depend on the provider and your circumstances, so ask the provider to confirm the offer before comparing it with standard tariffs.
11. Put market figures in perspective
Ofcom and Pure Pricing reported an average differential of £6.84 per month in September 2025 between superfast fixed-broadband and fixed-voice bundles when comparing certain out-of-contract and re-engaged customers. The figure is CPI-adjusted September 2025 data published on 26 February 2026, not a broadband-only quote or a guaranteed saving. Ofcom says an individual customer’s saving could be higher or lower. The report is available at Ofcom’s Pricing and consumer engagement report.
The same report gives category differentials of £4.17 per month for standard bundles and £7.94 for ultrafast bundles, on the same basis. These historical market indicators can help you recognise the potential value of renegotiating when out of contract; they cannot replace an address-specific quote and full-term calculation.
12. A practical comparison procedure
- Run the address check. Save the technologies, estimated speeds and minimum guarantees shown for your exact property.
- Write down simultaneous use. Count people, calls, streams, games, downloads, backups and home-working sessions during the busiest period.
- Set a sensible speed floor. Use the household pattern and upload needs to reject tiers that cannot meet it; do not select solely by the maximum advertised speed.
- Collect complete quotes. Request advertised, busy-time, normally available, maximum and guaranteed speeds for both download and upload.
- Calculate each term total. Include every price stage, one-off charge, compulsory extra, scheduled rise and equipment obligation.
- Read the commitment. Note the minimum term, renewal treatment, notice period, cancellation window and early termination formula.
- Check remedies. Confirm support routes, repair expectations, compensation, applicable speed code and how to test a fault.
- Ask about alternatives. Check social-tariff eligibility and whether a different technology provides a better reliability or upload trade-off at the address.
- Save the evidence. Keep the pre-contract summary, quote, speed guarantee and price-rise wording until the contract ends.
Common comparison mistakes and how to avoid them
- Choosing by download headline alone: compare busy-time, guaranteed and upload figures as well.
- Comparing introductory prices: calculate the full minimum-term cost, including the post-promotion rate.
- Assuming full fibre is available: verify the exact address; technology rollout is not uniform.
- Ignoring price-rise wording: distinguish an agreed, dated pound-and-pence rise from a later increase outside the contract.
- Testing over weak Wi-Fi: use an Ethernet-connected computer or tablet when diagnosing whether the line meets its guarantee.
- Forgetting the exit cost: obtain the exact early termination amount and equipment-return rules before switching.
- Relying on an old code list: confirm current Broadband Speeds Code of Practice participation for the contract you are buying.
- Assuming a market average is your saving: treat the £6.84 figure as historical, category-specific context rather than a promise.
Final decision rule
Choose the deal that is available at your address, meets the household’s busiest realistic use with a credible minimum guarantee, and has the lowest acceptable total cost after scheduled rises and one-off charges. When two offers are close, prefer the one with the clearer speed remedy, stronger upload performance, more suitable connection technology and less expensive exit exposure—not automatically the one with the fastest headline number.
