Bluetooth-speaker battery life is comparable only when you know how each number was measured. “Up to 12 hours,” a laboratory result, and an independent review’s runtime can all be accurate while describing different combinations of volume, audio, features, temperature, firmware and battery condition. Treat every hour figure as a conditional measurement, not a universal rating.
What a battery-life number actually tells you
A speaker’s runtime is the elapsed time between a defined starting charge and a defined playback endpoint under specific operating conditions. The number is not an intrinsic property like weight. It is the result of stored battery energy, the speaker’s power demand and the test setup.

Two speakers can therefore produce different runtimes even with similar battery capacities. A smaller enclosure may consume less power than a larger one, and a speaker playing quietly may last much longer than the same model at high output. Which? notes that some speakers in its testing lasted under five hours while others exceeded 30 hours, but those observations are not a universal range for every Bluetooth speaker.

- Playback level: a percentage setting, a measured sound-pressure level (SPL), or simply “moderate volume.”
- Measurement position: distance from the speaker and whether the level was measured on-axis or otherwise.
- Audio material: track, playlist, genre, frequency content, and whether playback was continuous or intermittent.
- Connection details: source device, Bluetooth codec where disclosed, wireless conditions and the number of connected devices.
- Sound processing: equalizer (EQ), bass enhancement, spatial modes and any other processing.
- Other active functions: lighting, voice assistants, multi-speaker links, charging a device and power-saving features.
- Battery and software state: charge procedure, firmware version, battery age and whether the battery had already degraded.
- Environment: temperature, indoor or outdoor setting and other conditions that could change power demand.
- Endpoint: the moment audio stops, an automatic shutdown, a low-battery warning, or a point where the speaker continues at reduced volume.
If a source omits most of these details, its figure can still be useful as a rough indication for that source’s audience, but it is weak evidence for a head-to-head ranking.

Why “up to” claims are conditional
“Up to” describes a best-case or specified-case result, not a guaranteed duration for every listener. The conditions belong beside the number whenever you quote it.
Bose SoundLink Flex example
The Bose SoundLink Flex product page states “up to 12 hours.” Bose says that figure is based on Spotify’s Global Top 50 music at 65% volume and typical indoor temperatures. The same page identifies content, volume and surrounding temperature as variables, says playback below 50% volume can extend runtime, and says runtime decreases faster above 65% volume. This is a manufacturer-stated condition, not an independent laboratory result.
Nothing CMF Speaker S example
The Nothing CMF Speaker S page states up to 18 hours with the speaker fully charged, Balance EQ and Ultra Bass enabled, volume at 50%, AAC audio, other features at their defaults and an ambient temperature of 25°C in controlled laboratory testing. Nothing lists audio content and frequency, source device, wireless conditions, enabled features, usage habits, battery age and environmental conditions as variables. It describes laboratory figures as reference values rather than guarantees.

These examples show why 12 and 18 hours cannot be treated as a direct product ranking. They use different models and different declared volume, audio, feature and environmental conditions. A longer headline number may reflect a quieter level, a different track, a different endpoint or a more favorable test environment.
How independent tests measure runtime
RTINGS’ fixed-SPL protocol
RTINGS’ speaker-testing methodology describes a repeatable battery procedure. The speaker is fully charged, updated to the latest firmware and played continuously with looped audio. Playback is calibrated to 80 dB SPL measured from 1 metre, then timed until the speaker stops. RTINGS also checks recharge time and power-saving behavior. Its battery-method page, Our Speaker Active Features Tests: Battery, notes that maximum volume is likely to shorten runtime and identifies multiple connected devices, RGB lighting, firmware status and battery aging as relevant factors.

- 【Accurate Measurement】 The measuring range of the sound level meter is 30dB to 130dB . Highly accurate with ± 2.0 dB. Real-time monitoring can give you accurate data on the sound level in the area.
- 【A/C Weighted Measurement】 The A weighted simulates the frequency characteristics of low-intensity human ear noise, which is suitable for the detection of ambient noise. The C weighted simulates the frequency properties of high-intensity noises of the human ear, which are suitable for the sound pressure analysis of machine motors and machines. More professional measurement methods provide users with a more perfect user experience.
- 【Fast and Slow Measurement】 The sound level meter has the function of converting the fast and slow response rate. The fast response rate uses a time constant of 0.125s/time for general environmental measurement. The slow response rate uses a 1s/time constant, which is used for environmental measurements with relatively large changes in noise levels.
- 【Digital LCD Display 】 The digital display is a 4-digit LCD display with a resolution of 0.1 dB. Backlit LCD digital display, the reading effect is clearer in dark places. When the battery is low, the LCD display will display a low voltage icon, indicating that the power is low at this point and the battery needs to be replaced.
- 【Convenient and Lightweight 】Tadeto sound level meter is lightweight and easy to carry. It's widely used in factories, transportation, car, baby room and audio system offices, sound quality control in homes, schools, and construction sites.
80 dB SPL at 1 metre is a comparison condition, not a universal definition of normal listening. A reader who listens quietly indoors may obtain longer runtime; someone outdoors at high output may obtain less. The value of RTINGS’ method is that the level and distance are disclosed and can be applied consistently across models tested under that protocol.
Which? moderate-volume testing
Which?’s testing method describes continuously playing music at a moderate volume. Which? explicitly writes, “Manufacturer claims and our own battery-life measurements don’t always align.” Because “moderate volume” is not the same published target as 80 dB SPL at 1 metre, a Which? result should not be silently merged with an RTINGS result into one league table.

Build an apples-to-apples comparison
If you are testing several speakers yourself, or compiling results from multiple reviews, use a written protocol before starting. The following sequence adapts the disclosed elements of published methods into a reproducible comparison. It is a protocol to explain and follow, not a claim that this publication performed the test.
- Identify the units. Record model name, hardware revision if known, firmware version and battery age or approximate purchase date. Do not mix a brand-new sample with a heavily used one without labeling that difference.
- Standardize charging. Fully charge every speaker using the manufacturer’s stated procedure. Note whether charging is done while powered off, whether an indicator changes state and how long the unit remains at the full-charge indication.
- Choose one audio source. Use the same phone, computer or other source for every unit when possible. Select one continuous track or a documented playlist and keep the Bluetooth connection and codec consistent. If a model forces a different codec or source path, disclose it rather than pretending the conditions match.
- Set a defined level. A percentage shown in an app is not comparable across brands. For a measured comparison, use a sound-level meter and target a fixed SPL at a fixed distance. RTINGS publishes 80 dB SPL at 1 metre; adopting that target makes your results easier to interpret alongside its method. State that the target is a test condition, not “typical listening.”
- Control sound modes. Set EQ, bass enhancement and other processing identically where the controls allow it. If a model’s advertised figure requires a named mode, record that mode in the result instead of disabling it and calling the result equivalent.
- Control extra features. Keep lighting, voice assistants, multi-speaker links, charging outputs and other selectable functions consistently on or off. If a feature cannot be disabled, record that fact.
- Control the environment. Test at a stable temperature and note whether the speaker is indoors or outdoors. Avoid placing one unit in direct sun or near a heat source while another remains cool.
- Start together conceptually. Begin playback after the full-charge condition is documented, record the start time and keep the source connection active. Avoid pauses, skipped tracks and unnecessary phone activity that would make one speaker’s workload different.
- Define the endpoint in advance. Decide whether the endpoint is complete silence, automatic shutdown, or another operational state. If a speaker lowers its volume, gives a low-battery warning or keeps playing quietly after the nominal endpoint, record the times separately rather than hiding the behavior.
- Repeat surprising results. If a measurement is far from the maker’s claim or from another test of the same model, repeat it after checking charge, firmware, connection and feature settings. RTINGS says it may retest large disagreements between its result and a manufacturer claim.
- Publish conditions with every result. Include level, distance, audio, connection, features, temperature, firmware, battery state and endpoint in the table or caption. A bare hour total is not a reproducible result.
How to compare published figures without misleading yourself
Keep unlike evidence in separate columns. A useful comparison sheet looks like this:

| Comparison item | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer estimate | Exact “up to” number and the maker’s volume, content, temperature and feature settings | Shows the conditions the brand selected; it is not automatically an independent measurement |
| Independent runtime | Measured hours, test organization and complete protocol | Allows readers to judge whether two tests are comparable |
| Playback level | Measured SPL and distance, or the stated percentage/moderate-volume description | Higher output generally requires more power |
| Audio and connection | Track or playlist, source device, codec where disclosed and wireless setup | Content and radio activity can change demand |
| Features | EQ, bass modes, lighting, assistants, links and charging outputs | Feature load can change drain and may explain a discrepancy |
| Endpoint | Playback stopped, shutdown, warning or reduced-volume behavior | Different endpoints can add or remove apparent hours |
| Evidence quality | Manufacturer estimate, standardized independent test or individual anecdote | Signals how much weight the number deserves |
Do not calculate a claim-versus-test “accuracy percentage” unless the two protocols are sufficiently aligned and you show the arithmetic. Comparing a 65%-volume product claim with an 80 dB SPL laboratory result may produce a precise-looking percentage that has no meaningful interpretation.
Features, firmware and battery age that change runtime
Volume and audio content
Amplifier demand rises as output rises, so a speaker generally runs longer at quiet playback than near maximum volume. The content itself also matters: bass-heavy or otherwise demanding material can require different amplifier behavior from a relatively sparse track. A playlist that alternates between quiet speech and loud music is not equivalent to a continuous high-energy track.
Wireless and connected devices
Bluetooth radio activity, source behavior and multiple connected devices can add demand. If a speaker maintains a second connection, searches for a source or participates in a multi-speaker arrangement, it is not performing the same workload as a single, stable connection.
Lighting and smart functions
RGB lighting, voice-assistant listening, status features and other active electronics draw power. Keep them consistently disabled or enabled when comparing units. A result with lights off should not be presented as the model’s runtime under the maker’s illuminated party mode.
Firmware and power saving
Firmware can affect power management and feature behavior. Update speakers where the test protocol calls for current software, and record the version. Also note whether a unit enters an idle or automatic-shutdown state; a power-saving timer can look like a battery failure if the source has paused.

Rechargeable-battery aging
Rechargeable batteries lose usable capacity over time. Two samples of the same model can therefore produce different results if one has spent years in frequent service and the other is new. Include battery age or sample history when known, and avoid treating an old unit’s runtime as a definitive specification for a new one.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why battery capacity alone cannot rank speakers
Capacity is only stored energy. Runtime depends on how quickly the entire system consumes that energy under the chosen conditions. Audio amplifiers, digital signal processing, radios, lighting and standby functions all contribute to demand. Which? specifically observes that a smaller speaker may use less power despite having a smaller battery.
For that reason, milliamp-hour or watt-hour figures should be treated as supporting specifications, not as a runtime leaderboard. Capacity comparisons are also complicated when manufacturers quote different battery voltages or omit the unit needed to convert a figure into stored energy. The only defensible runtime comparison is one tied to disclosed operating conditions.
Use sound level correctly in a DIY test
A sound-level meter or decibel meter can help you match a fixed SPL, such as the 80 dB measured at 1 metre used in RTINGS’ published protocol. It measures acoustic pressure at the measurement position; it does not measure battery capacity, electrical consumption or runtime. Placement, room reflections and frequency weighting can affect the reading, so document how and where you measured.

How to report results readers can use
A strong battery comparison separates evidence instead of forcing one ranking:
- Put the manufacturer’s claim in a “maker-stated condition” column and quote the condition in the same cell.
- Put each independent result in a separate column labeled with the organization and protocol.
- Show level and distance prominently; “80 dB SPL at 1 metre” and “moderate volume” are different descriptions.
- List feature states, source, codec where available, temperature, firmware and battery/sample age.
- State the endpoint, especially when playback continues at reduced volume after a warning.
- Use “not stated” when a source does not disclose a comparable value. Do not fill gaps with assumptions.
- Keep anecdotal owner reports separate from controlled tests. They can illustrate variation but cannot establish a model-wide runtime.
For a reader deciding whether a speaker will cover a workday, picnic or trip, translate the result only after showing the test conditions. A quiet indoor listener may reasonably expect more time than a high-output outdoor listener, but neither expectation should be presented as a guaranteed conversion from the headline number.
What the wider market signal does—and does not—say
Qualcomm’s The State of Sound 2021 reports that battery life was selected as a purchase driver by 42% of surveyed Bluetooth wireless-speaker respondents. The percentage applies to that survey’s participants and date; it is not a current estimate for every speaker buyer. The finding explains why transparent runtime reporting matters, but it does not identify a universally best battery design. The report is available at Qualcomm’s State of Sound 2021 PDF.

A practical decision rule
When two speakers have different headline claims, choose the figure with the better evidence, not automatically the larger number. A result from a disclosed, repeatable test at a stated level is more useful for comparison than an “up to” claim with no conditions. A manufacturer claim can still be valuable when it names volume, content, temperature and feature settings, because you can judge whether those settings resemble your use.
If the protocols differ, keep both visible and label the difference. The honest conclusion may be that the available numbers do not establish which speaker lasts longer under your exact conditions. That is not a failure of comparison; it is the correct limit of the evidence.
