How to Compare Bitcoin Mining and AI Workloads for Data Center Capacity

One megawatt is not one unit of useful work. A Bitcoin mining site uses electricity to run specialized application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) that perform cryptographic hashes. An AI data center uses servers, accelerators, memory, storage, networking and cooling to train or serve models. The same grid connection can therefore produce radically different outputs, operating costs and service obligations.

A sound comparison keeps five things separate: electrical capacity (MW), energy consumed over time (MWh), workload output, supporting infrastructure and load flexibility. Global statistics can show the scale of the two sectors, but only a facility’s interconnection agreement, equipment list, cooling design, operating schedule and commercial requirements can establish whether a particular site is suitable for either workload or for conversion between them.

Start with the right question: capacity, energy or useful work?

Data-center capacity is usually discussed in megawatts (MW), a power limit. A 20 MW interconnection can supply up to 20 megawatts at a given moment, subject to utility and facility constraints. Energy is measured in megawatt-hours (MWh): a 20 MW load running continuously for one hour uses 20 MWh, while the same load running for half an hour uses 10 MWh. Annual energy is the sum of those intervals, not another name for the connection size.

Useful work requires a third measurement. For Bitcoin mining, that might be hash rate (hashes per second) from a defined fleet at a stated efficiency. For AI, it could be training runs completed, tokens generated per second, images classified per second or another model-specific service metric. Hash rate and AI throughput cannot be converted into a common “compute” unit, and a nameplate MW figure does not reveal revenue, utilization, latency or service quality.

Include facility overhead in every site comparison. Servers average around 60% of electricity demand in modern data centers, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), but the share varies by data-center type. Cooling, power distribution, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), storage, networking, lighting and controls consume the remainder. Comparing ASIC or accelerator nameplate power alone understates the site’s actual demand.

What the published electricity figures actually show

The available sector estimates describe different populations and years, so they should not be placed in a single league table as if they were measurements of the same thing.

Measure Figure How to interpret it
Global data-center electricity consumption 485 TWh in 2025; roughly 950 TWh projected for 2030 IEA global outlook published in 2026. It covers all data-center workloads, not AI alone, and is a projection for 2030 rather than a site forecast. IEA says AI-focused centers are growing faster than total data-center electricity use.
Global Bitcoin-mining electricity use 67–240 TWh in 2023, with a 120 TWh point estimate Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index estimate reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) in 2024. The range reflects substantial uncertainty in identifying mining activity and facility data; it is not a current 2026 consumption figure.
Typical facility scale descriptions About 10–25 MW for conventional data centers; 100 MW or more for hyperscale AI-focused centers IEA illustrative ranges from 2025. They are broad descriptions, not engineering requirements or directly comparable buildings.
Large mining-facility equipment counts 10,000–20,000 mining units at large facilities identified by EIA; some reports described up to 100,000 EIA reporting from 2024 that illustrates fleet scale, not a current census or a statement about every mine.
ERCOT flexible-load enrollment Up to 1,530 MW of large industrial consumers EIA reported this 2024 program total. Cryptocurrency miners were major participants, but the full 1,530 MW should not be attributed to Bitcoin mining.

Annual terawatt-hours also hide utilization. Two facilities with the same 100 MW connection can have different energy use if one runs continuously and the other curtails during expensive hours, experiences outages or operates only part of the year. Ask for interval-meter data, contracted demand, maximum import, curtailment history and expected uptime before drawing conclusions.

Define the output before comparing workloads

Bitcoin mining output

Bitcoin mining ASICs repeatedly calculate hashes to compete for a block reward. A comparison should name the ASIC model or fleet, total hash rate, energy efficiency (often expressed as joules per terahash), quantity installed, operating temperature and expected uptime. Network difficulty, bitcoin price, transaction fees, pool terms and hardware availability affect financial results, but none can be inferred from MW alone.

Use a consistent boundary: report both the miners’ direct draw and the whole-facility draw. If a fleet produces a stated hash rate at the machines’ power supplies, add distribution and cooling overhead before comparing it with an AI site’s metered load. A higher hash rate does not automatically mean a better result if the fleet is older, less efficient or frequently curtailed.

AI training output

Training is a batch workload that may occupy many accelerators for days or weeks. Useful measures include completed training steps, time to reach a target validation score, accelerator-hours, tokens processed or cost per trained model. State the model architecture, precision, dataset and target quality; otherwise “AI capacity” has no reproducible meaning.

Training jobs can be scheduled around maintenance or lower-price periods in some environments, but moving a job may affect deadlines, data locality and cluster utilization. A site that promises a fixed completion date has a different flexibility profile from an internal experiment with no service-level commitment.

AI inference output

Inference serves users or applications. Report requests per second, tokens per second, latency percentile, model size, context length, batching policy and availability target. A cluster optimized for high-throughput batch inference may not satisfy an interactive service requiring low latency. Network fabric, memory capacity and storage often constrain performance before the facility reaches its electrical limit.

Compare the physical systems, not just the chips

Compute equipment

  • Mining: purpose-built ASICs, power supplies, racks, mining firmware and pool connectivity. The hardware is optimized for one algorithm and generally has little value for unrelated computing after its useful mining life.
  • AI: general-purpose servers paired with GPUs, other accelerators or CPUs, plus high-bandwidth memory, local storage and a high-speed cluster fabric. Hardware choice depends on model software, numerical precision and communication patterns.

Power delivery

Both workloads require medium-voltage service, transformers, switchgear, protection, distribution panels and monitoring. AI clusters may need dense rack distribution and redundant paths designed around sensitive server power supplies. Mining installations can use different rack layouts, ventilation arrangements and redundancy choices. Verify voltage, phase, fault ratings, grounding, spare capacity and the condition of every downstream component rather than assuming a large substation makes a site AI-ready.

Cooling and heat rejection

Every consumed watt becomes heat that must be removed. Mining sites may use direct air cooling, evaporative systems or containerized designs selected for low cost and rapid deployment. AI racks can have much higher power density and may require rear-door heat exchangers, direct-to-chip liquid cooling, immersion systems, treated-water loops, pumps and heat-rejection equipment. Existing chillers, cooling towers, water rights, filtration and environmental permits must be checked against the target rack density.

Networking, storage and operations

Mining needs dependable pool and management connectivity, but its data movement is modest relative to an AI training cluster. Distributed AI training can require low-latency, high-bandwidth links between accelerators, as well as large datasets, fast parallel storage, backup and observability systems. Fiber routes, carrier diversity, cross-connects, firewall capacity and data-governance controls can become the limiting factors even when electrical capacity is available.

Model the load profile and flexibility explicitly

Bitcoin mining is often described as interruptible because miners can reduce or stop operation when wholesale prices rise or when a grid program calls for curtailment. EIA documented miners participating in demand-response arrangements, but that evidence supports “potentially interruptible,” not “universally flexible.” Contract terms, hardware wear, pool economics, local regulation and the cost of restarting determine how much load can actually be removed.

AI flexibility depends on the job and the service promise. A non-urgent training run may pause or move to another time, while a production inference service may need continuous operation and strict latency. Even a flexible job can have checkpointing overhead, data-transfer limits or penalties for missing a deadline. Document the minimum operating level, ramp rate, notice period, maximum curtailment duration, restart time and frequency of allowed events.

Question Mining assessment AI assessment
What can be turned down? Individual ASIC groups, containers or the entire fleet, subject to pool and economic conditions. Selected training jobs, batches or replicas; production inference may require redundancy and a minimum service level.
How quickly? Often operationally fast, but the actual ramp depends on controls, power distribution and contractual rules. Depends on checkpointing, workload orchestration, model state and user commitments.
What is lost during curtailment? Mining time and potential block-reward revenue. Training progress, inference capacity, latency headroom or contractual availability.
What must be verified? Demand-response contract, pool policy, restart procedure and thermal behavior. Service-level agreement, checkpoint interval, queue policy, failover capacity and customer notification rules.

Use a facility-level comparison worksheet

Collect the following information for each candidate workload before calculating utilization or return:

  1. Interconnection: Record contracted import capacity, firm versus interruptible rights, voltage, substation limits, upgrade obligations and the utility’s delivery schedule.
  2. Metered demand: Obtain at least 12 months of interval data where available, including peak demand, power factor, outages, curtailment events and auxiliary loads.
  3. Energy price: Separate energy, demand, transmission, capacity, taxes and ancillary-service charges. Note time-of-use periods and any curtailment credits.
  4. Compute fleet: List model, quantity, nameplate power, measured power, efficiency, age, firmware, replacement plan and expected availability.
  5. Output metric: Define hash rate and joules per terahash for mining, or a model-specific throughput and latency target for AI. Set the measurement boundary at the facility meter.
  6. Cooling: Document rack density, supply and return temperatures, cooling medium, water consumption, heat-rejection capacity, seasonal limits and maintenance redundancy.
  7. Network and storage: Measure carrier capacity, route diversity, internal fabric bandwidth, storage performance, dataset location and backup requirements.
  8. Reliability: Specify target uptime, UPS ride-through, generator autonomy, planned maintenance windows, spare parts and recovery time objectives.
  9. Compliance: Check zoning, noise, water, emissions, building, fire, cybersecurity, data-residency and worker-safety requirements applicable to the location and workload.

Can a Bitcoin-mining facility be converted to AI?

Sometimes the electrical site can be reused; that does not establish that the building is economically or technically ready for AI. Conversion is a project-specific engineering question. The evidence available for sector-level comparison does not quantify a universal cost, schedule or success rate.

Step 1: Confirm the power right

Review the utility contract and interconnection study. Confirm that the capacity is firm, that the tariff permits the proposed use, and that protection, metering and power-quality requirements fit sensitive server equipment. A nominal MW number without deliverability is not usable AI capacity.

Step 2: Survey the building and racks

Measure clear height, floor loading, slab condition, aisle layout, fire separation, cable pathways and rack positions. Mining containers or open-air structures may lack the raised floors, secure rooms, fire suppression and controlled environment expected by enterprise AI deployments.

Step 3: Re-engineer cooling

Calculate heat load at the intended rack density and climate design conditions. Determine whether liquid-cooling distribution, water treatment, leak detection, pumps, chillers or dry coolers are required. Existing fans or evaporative equipment should be treated as assets to evaluate, not proof of compatibility.

Step 4: Build the network and storage layer

Obtain carrier quotes and design redundant fiber entrances, switching, management networks, cluster fabric, high-performance storage and backup. An AI deployment can fail its performance target if east-west traffic, storage I/O or external data access is undersized.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 5: Specify the target AI hardware

Choose the accelerator generation, server configuration, memory, interconnect topology and software stack first. Then calculate rack power, breaker loading, UPS capacity, generator sizing and cooling requirements. Reusing a mining electrical design without this equipment-level calculation risks overheating, nuisance trips or insufficient redundancy.

Step 6: Test operations and economics

Run a staged commissioning test at representative load. Measure facility power usage effectiveness, temperatures, network performance, failure recovery and curtailment behavior. Compare the resulting capital work, downtime, hardware procurement, energy price and expected workload output with the value of continuing mining or building elsewhere.

How to compare economics without inventing a “profit per MW”

A defensible financial model keeps workload revenue and facility costs separate. For mining, include bitcoin and fee assumptions, network difficulty, pool fees, ASIC efficiency, fleet availability, power price, demand charges, curtailment revenue, repairs and hardware depreciation. For AI, include accelerator and server procurement, software, storage, network transit, staffing, power, cooling, utilization, customer pricing and service-level penalties.

Use dated quotations and explicit scenarios. A mining fleet may earn more during favorable market conditions but be exposed to asset obsolescence and difficulty changes. An AI cluster may command higher revenue per installed MW for a particular service, yet require expensive accelerators, liquid cooling, networking and reliability measures. The cited sector sources do not establish a like-for-like capital cost, conversion cost or revenue-per-MW result, so any universal winner would be unsupported.

A practical decision framework

Choose mining when

  • The site has reliable, competitively priced power and hardware suited to the Bitcoin algorithm.
  • The owner can tolerate revenue volatility and has a documented curtailment strategy.
  • Cooling, noise, permitting and network requirements match the mining design.
  • The measured fleet efficiency and uptime produce an acceptable result under conservative price and difficulty cases.

Choose AI when

  • There is a defined training or inference customer, model, throughput target and service-level requirement.
  • The building can support the required rack density, cooling medium, network fabric and storage.
  • Power quality, redundancy, security and compliance meet the target deployment’s requirements.
  • Hardware procurement, staffing and utilization assumptions are supported by contracts or credible demand.

Keep the options open when

  • The interconnection is not yet firm or the tariff’s permitted uses are unclear.
  • Cooling capacity and water or environmental constraints have not been surveyed.
  • No workload-specific output metric exists, making the MW comparison purely nominal.
  • Conversion costs, downtime and equipment lead times have not been quoted.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Equating MW with compute: Correct by reporting a defined output metric and whole-facility energy.
  • Mixing years and geographies: Label the 2023 mining estimate, the 2025 and 2030 global data-center figures, and the 2024 U.S. program observations separately.
  • Using a point estimate as certainty: Present the 67–240 TWh mining range and explain why EIA considers the underlying activity difficult to measure.
  • Counting all data-center growth as AI: The IEA projection covers data centers broadly, although AI-focused centers are growing faster.
  • Assuming every load is interruptible: Verify controls, contracts, workload commitments and restart behavior for the specific site.
  • Ignoring overhead: Include cooling, UPS losses, networking, storage and distribution in the facility meter.
  • Assuming a mining building is an AI building: Complete power, cooling, structural, network, compliance and commissioning studies before committing capital.
  • Claiming a universal financial winner: Model dated, site-specific prices, equipment and utilization instead of extrapolating from sector headlines.

What a credible comparison should report

A final assessment should show the interconnection and firm MW, measured peak and annual MWh, workload equipment and efficiency, facility overhead, output metric, utilization, uptime, cooling design, network capacity, curtailment terms, site constraints and financial assumptions. It should identify which figures are measured, modeled, historical estimates or projections. That format lets a utility, investor or operator challenge each assumption and replace it with site data.

The central conclusion is straightforward: Bitcoin mining and AI can share a broad data-center label and a demand for electricity, but they are not interchangeable loads. Compare them at the facility meter, define useful work separately for each workload, and treat conversion as an engineering and commercial diligence exercise rather than a simple change of software.
