The reliable way to compare bank stocks is to connect three sets of evidence: recurring earnings, the pace and composition of loan growth, and whether credit losses are stable or building. Compare banks with similar business models, use identical reporting periods and definitions, separate one-time items from core results, and read management’s explanations in the filings. A high return or fast loan expansion is not automatically better if it depends on expensive funding, concentrated lending, or weakening underwriting.
This is an analytical framework, not a recommendation to buy any particular stock. It is designed to help you decide what to investigate before considering valuation or an investment decision.

What a meaningful bank comparison measures
Banks transform deposits and other funding into loans and securities. Their results therefore depend on the spread between asset yields and funding costs, the fees earned from services, operating expenses, capital levels, and eventual credit losses. Looking at one ratio in isolation can hide those relationships.
A useful comparison answers four connected questions:

- Are reported profits coming from repeatable banking activity or from an unusual gain, accounting adjustment, or temporary release of reserves?
- Is the loan book expanding in categories the bank can fund and underwrite prudently?
- Are delinquency, nonaccruals, charge-offs, provisions, and reserves moving in a direction consistent with the stated risk?
- Do funding, liquidity, and capital give the bank room to absorb stress while continuing to lend?
Start with banks that resemble one another. A credit-card specialist, a commercial lender, a mortgage-heavy institution, and a custody bank have different margins, fee streams, balance-sheet risks, and capital needs. Comparing their headline returns without adjusting for business mix can produce a misleading ranking.
Match the comparison set
- Business mix: Identify the proportions of commercial and industrial, commercial real estate, residential real estate, consumer, and nonbank financial institution lending. Note material securities, trading, payments, wealth-management, or investment-banking activities.
- Geography: Regional economic conditions affect borrowers and deposits. A bank concentrated in one local market should not be treated as equivalent to a nationally diversified lender.
- Scale and balance-sheet structure: Compare institutions of broadly similar size and regulatory profile. Very large banks may have different liquidity access, fee businesses, and reporting categories than smaller community banks.
- Reporting basis: Use the same quarter or year for every bank and check whether figures are reported, annualized, adjusted, or presented on a taxable-equivalent basis.
How to evaluate earnings quality
Begin with the income statement, then test whether the result is repeatable. A bank can post strong net income while its core spread is narrowing, or show a weak quarter because of a clearly identified one-time charge.
Net interest margin and net interest income
The Federal Reserve’s June 2026 Supervision and Regulation Report defines net interest margin (NIM) as “net interest income divided by average earning assets.” Net interest income is interest earned on loans and securities minus interest paid on deposits and other funding. Average earning assets are used rather than ending assets so that the ratio better reflects the period during which assets generated income.
Recommended Free Tools
NIM is a useful measure of core spread income, but it does not describe all bank earnings. Two banks can report the same NIM while having very different fee income, trading results, expenses, credit costs, or balance-sheet risk. Track the direction of NIM and the reasons management gives for the change: loan yields, securities reinvestment, deposit pricing, wholesale funding, hedging, or asset mix.
For context, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis reported an annualized quarterly net interest margin of 3.24 percent — Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, 2026 for Q2 2026, compared with 3.22 percent in Q1 2026. This is an aggregate reference point, not a target for an individual bank. The population and calculation period are different from other industry statistics, so do not combine them mechanically.
Return on assets and return on equity
Return on average assets (ROAA) measures net income relative to the assets used to produce it. Return on equity (ROE) measures net income relative to shareholders’ equity. ROAA is useful for comparing operating profitability across banks with different leverage; ROE shows the return earned on the owners’ capital but is affected by leverage and capital requirements.

The Federal Reserve reported about 1.1 percent ROAA — Federal Reserve Board, 2026 and about 11.2 percent ROE — Federal Reserve Board, 2026 for large banks at the end of 2025. These are system-level context, not required targets for every bank. A bank with more capital may have a lower ROE while remaining safer, and a bank with less capital can produce a higher ROE simply through greater leverage.
Separate core earnings from volatile items
Read the reconciliation between reported and adjusted results, but do not accept an adjusted number automatically. Identify what management removes and whether the item is genuinely unusual. Items to investigate include securities gains or losses, legal settlements, restructuring, acquisition accounting, goodwill impairment, tax benefits, and large reserve releases or builds.
Compare several quarters and at least one full year. A single quarter can be distorted by seasonality, market movements, or timing. Look for consistency in net interest income, fee income, operating expenses, and provisions. If earnings rise only because expenses or credit costs temporarily fall, the improvement may not persist.
Taxable-equivalent adjustments
Banks sometimes increase tax-exempt interest income to a taxable-equivalent amount so yields can be compared with taxable assets. KeyCorp, for example, explains that its net interest income discussion uses a taxable-equivalent basis to make comparisons across taxable and nontaxable asset yields. When comparing reported figures, use the same basis for every bank or reconcile the adjustment; otherwise, a presentation difference can look like a performance difference.
Earnings checklist
| Measure | What to examine | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Net interest income | Growth, asset yields, funding costs, and average earning assets | Shows the dollars generated by the core spread before other revenue and expenses |
| Net interest margin | Trend and management’s explanation for changes | Shows spread income relative to average earning assets |
| Fee and other noninterest income | Mix, recurring nature, and sensitivity to markets or transactions | Reveals diversification beyond lending |
| Noninterest expense | Underlying expense growth and efficiency initiatives | Tests whether revenue growth converts into profit |
| Provision for credit losses | Provision expense, reserve releases, and portfolio migration | Connects current earnings with expected future losses |
| ROAA and ROE | Several periods, peer group, and capital level | Provides different views of profitability and leverage |
How to analyze loan growth without mistaking risk for success
Loan growth is valuable only when it is funded, priced, and underwritten appropriately. Start by calculating the change in average loans over the same period for each bank. Then break the total into categories. Aggregate growth can conceal very different exposures in commercial, consumer, real-estate, and nonbank financial institution lending.
Compare categories, not just the total
For each category, record beginning and ending balances, the growth rate, yield, delinquency trend, and share of the total portfolio. Ask whether growth comes from new originations, purchased portfolios, foreign-exchange movements, acquisitions, or a change in reporting classification. A bank that grows through a low-risk secured portfolio is not taking the same risk as one expanding rapidly in a concentrated or cyclical segment.

| Loan category | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Commercial and industrial | Are borrowers concentrated by industry or sponsor? Are standards, pricing, and utilization changing? |
| Commercial real estate | What property types and markets drive exposure? How do maturities, refinancing needs, and collateral values affect risk? |
| Residential real estate | Is the book composed of mortgages, home-equity loans, or construction? What are underwriting standards and geographic concentrations? |
| Consumer | How are balances split among cards, auto, personal, and other products? Are delinquencies rising in newer vintages? |
| Nonbank financial institutions | What counterparties and collateral support the exposure, and how transparent are the underlying risks? |
Test the funding behind growth
Compare loan growth with deposits and other funding. Rapid lending financed by stable, granular deposits has a different liquidity profile from lending financed by expensive wholesale sources or short-term borrowings. Review deposit mix, interest paid on deposits, uninsured or otherwise rate-sensitive balances where disclosed, and the maturity of wholesale funding.
Also compare loans with total assets and capital. Growth that pushes concentration or capital ratios toward internal limits may be less attractive than slower growth with a larger cushion. Management’s discussion should explain whether growth is deliberate, constrained by funding, or driven by unusually strong demand.
Check underwriting and pricing
Read comments on approval standards, loan-to-value or debt-service measures where provided, covenant quality, exception rates, and risk grading. Ask whether the bank is sacrificing price or terms to gain volume. Fast growth combined with falling spreads can indicate competition for weaker or less profitable borrowers.

Use the same interval for every bank. A common calculation is (ending balance ÷ beginning balance) − 1, using average balances when the filing provides them. Do not compare one bank’s annual growth with another bank’s annualized quarterly rate. Note whether a reported quarterly rate is annualized and whether acquisitions or currency movements affect the base.
How to read credit quality
Credit quality is a process, not a single ratio. The Federal Reserve defines delinquent loans in its figures as loans 30 or more days past due or in nonaccrual status. A bank’s own filing may present additional buckets, so read its definitions before comparing percentages.
Distinguish the main measures
- Delinquencies: Payments are past due. The severity and migration from early-stage delinquency to later stages matter.
- Nonaccrual loans: The bank no longer recognizes interest income on loans because collectability is in doubt under its accounting policy.
- Net charge-offs: Loans judged uncollectible are removed from the balance sheet, net of recoveries. Charge-offs are realized losses, not merely warnings.
- Provision expense: The income-statement amount set aside for expected credit losses during the period. It can rise before charge-offs or fall when expected losses decline.
- Allowance or reserves: The balance-sheet cushion for expected losses. Evaluate its coverage relative to nonperforming loans and the composition of the portfolio.
For context, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis reported 1.46 percent for nonaccrual and 30-or-more-day-past-due loans as a share of total loans in Q2 2026. This statistic uses a specific definition and aggregate population; it is not interchangeable with a bank’s individually reported nonperforming-loan ratio.

Look for direction and migration
Read at least four quarters of delinquency, nonaccrual, charge-off, provision, and reserve data. Rising early-stage delinquencies may be an initial warning; later-stage migration and nonaccruals show more serious deterioration. Compare trends by loan category rather than relying on a portfolio-wide average that can be improved by rapid growth in a different category.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConnect reserves to the portfolio
A reserve increase can reflect prudent recognition of risk, while a reserve release can boost current earnings even when underlying conditions are merely stable. Ask what changed in economic forecasts, risk ratings, collateral values, or portfolio mix. Compare reserve coverage with the bank’s nonaccrual and criticized-asset trends, and check whether management’s explanation is consistent with charge-offs that follow.
Use sector data as context, not as a target
The FDIC reported aggregate net income of $80.5 billion — FDIC, 2026 and a 1.26 percent ROA ratio — FDIC, 2026 for FDIC-insured institutions in Q1 2026. These figures describe the insured-institution sector for that quarter, not a forecast for an individual bank.
The Federal Reserve’s large-bank figures, the FDIC’s insured-institution figures, and the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis’ quarterly series cover different populations and reporting windows. Keep them in separate context columns in your notes. Do not average them, treat one as a target for another, or infer that a bank is outperforming merely because its ratio is above a statistic drawn from a different group.
A repeatable bank-comparison workflow
- Define the peer group. Select banks with comparable business mix, geography, scale, and regulatory profile. Write down why each bank belongs in the group.
- Lock the period and basis. Use the same quarter or fiscal year, and mark reported versus annualized figures, average versus ending balances, and taxable-equivalent versus reported presentation.
- Collect the filings. Start with the latest quarterly and annual reports. Save the income statement, balance sheet, loan tables, credit-quality tables, capital ratios, and management’s discussion and analysis.
- Build the earnings view. Record net interest income, NIM, fee income, expenses, provision expense, net income, ROAA, and ROE for several periods. Flag unusual gains, losses, tax items, and reserve releases or builds.
- Map loan growth. Calculate total and category growth. Note funding sources, pricing, underwriting comments, concentrations, acquisitions, and changes in average balances.
- Map credit migration. Record delinquencies, nonaccruals, criticized or classified loans where disclosed, net charge-offs, provisions, and reserve coverage by category when available.
- Check standardized peer data. Use the FFIEC Uniform Bank Performance Report as a starting point for earnings, liquidity, capital, asset and liability management, and growth comparisons. Follow it with each bank’s own filings because standardized data cannot capture every business-model or presentation difference.
- Read management’s explanations. Test whether stated drivers match the numbers. Look for comments on deposit pricing, loan demand, credit migration, reserves, capital planning, and liquidity.
- Write a conditional conclusion. State which bank has stronger recurring earnings, which is growing faster, and whether that growth coincides with stable or deteriorating credit measures. List the evidence and the uncertainties rather than declaring a winner from one ratio.

How to interpret common combinations
Fast growth with stable credit indicators
This is the most encouraging combination, but verify that the stability is visible by category and that funding costs and capital remain controlled. Newer loans may not have had enough time to season, so also inspect underwriting and early-stage delinquency data.

Fast growth with rising delinquencies or provisions
Growth may be compensating for weakening economics, looser standards, or concentration in a stressed segment. Determine whether management is slowing originations, increasing reserves, or changing pricing. A high current ROE does not offset evidence that future losses are building.
High NIM but weak overall earnings
A strong spread can be overwhelmed by high expenses, fee losses, trading volatility, or credit costs. Review the full income statement and ask whether the margin depends on a shrinking or unusually risky asset class.
Lower ROE with stronger capital
Lower leverage can mathematically reduce ROE while improving resilience. Compare ROAA, tangible or common equity measures where disclosed, and regulatory capital ratios before treating the lower ROE as inferior performance.
Improving earnings driven by a reserve release
A release may be appropriate if expected losses have fallen, but it is not the same as stronger recurring revenue. Separate the release from pre-provision earnings and examine subsequent credit migration.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Comparing unlike banks: Rebuild the peer group around business mix and geography.
- Mixing periods: Put every figure on the same quarterly or annual basis and label annualized data.
- Using only reported net income: Reconcile one-time items and inspect pre-provision and core trends.
- Treating NIM as total profitability: Include fees, expenses, provisions, capital, and balance-sheet growth.
- Looking only at total loan growth: Break growth into categories and examine concentrations and underwriting.
- Calling every past-due loan a loss: Distinguish delinquency, nonaccrual, charge-off, provision, and reserve measures.
- Ignoring funding: Compare deposit growth, deposit pricing, wholesale reliance, and maturities alongside loans.
- Assuming a sector average is a benchmark: Treat Federal Reserve, FDIC, and St. Louis aggregate statistics as context for different populations.
- Skipping the footnotes: Taxable-equivalent adjustments, acquisitions, accounting changes, and definitions can alter comparability.
Where valuation fits
Only after the operating comparison should you examine the stock’s valuation. Price-to-earnings, price-to-tangible-book, dividend capacity, buybacks, and expected growth can help assess what the market already discounts. They do not repair weak underwriting or make an incomparable earnings figure reliable.
Use the operating framework to form a factual view first: the quality and durability of earnings, the source and risk of growth, and the direction of credit. Then ask whether the share price compensates for the risks you identified. That sequence prevents a low multiple from becoming a substitute for analysis.
Banks and insurers are not interchangeable
The reader question “How do I evaluate financial institutions such as banks and insurances?” combines businesses with different economics. The framework here is for banks. Insurers require additional measures such as premium growth, loss and expense ratios, reserve development, investment portfolio duration, and capital relative to policyholder obligations. Do not rank an insurer against a bank using NIM, loan growth, or bank delinquency definitions.

Quick Recap
Final decision checklist
- Are the selected banks genuine business-model peers?
- Do all figures use the same period, denominator, annualization, and accounting presentation?
- Is NIM supported by durable net interest income rather than a temporary funding or asset-yield effect?
- Do ROAA and ROE tell a consistent story after considering leverage and capital?
- Which loan categories drive growth, and are funding and underwriting keeping pace?
- Are delinquencies, nonaccruals, charge-offs, provisions, and reserves moving together or diverging?
- Does management’s explanation in the filings match the reported data?
- Have you used FFIEC peer data and sector statistics only as context, then verified the details in each bank’s filings?
- What evidence would disprove your current conclusion in the next quarter?
