Compare banks using the same peer criteria, growth measure, valuation definitions and dates. No single P/E, price-to-book or price-to-tangible-book ratio ranks every bank: each needs to be read alongside profitability, capital structure and risk. Analyst price targets are dated forecasts, not promises.
Start with comparable banks
Choose the peer group before comparing multiples. Banks are more meaningfully compared when their business models, geographies, size and risk profiles are reasonably similar. For regional banks, consider asset size, location, deposit and loan mix, and specialist businesses. State the criteria you used and date the market data; a peer median does not make unlike banks comparable.

A 2023 SEC-filed comparative appraisal illustrates deliberate screening using region, asset range and profitability while excluding niche models. Its peer group and figures are historical, not a current market benchmark. Read the appraisal exhibit.

CAGR is the annualized rate of change between two values over a stated period. For positive beginning and ending values measured consistently, calculate it as:
#1 Best Overall
CAGR = (ending value / beginning value)1 / number of years − 1
Identify exactly what grew, the start and end dates, and whether dividends are included. EPS CAGR, tangible book value per share CAGR and shareholder-return CAGR are different measures; do not compare one bank’s earnings growth with another’s share-price growth.
Rank #2
For shareholder returns, distinguish price appreciation from total return, which includes reinvested dividends. Earnings CAGR can be distorted by a low starting base, acquisitions, one-off gains or losses, or cyclical credit costs. Where relevant, compare additional consistent measures such as tangible book value per share, deposits, loans or revenue, and explain what they do not capture. A conventional CAGR is not meaningful across a zero or negative starting value without a different method and explanation.
Period labels matter. In an April 2026 investor presentation filed with the SEC, The Bancorp reported TBBK stock-price CAGR of 21% over the stated April 1, 2021–April 1, 2026 window, alongside 25% for three years and 2% for one year on the presentation’s reporting basis. These are issuer-reported historical figures, not forecasts or benchmarks for other banks. See The Bancorp presentation.

Use multiple valuation measures
P/E, P/B and P/TBV are established bank-stock measures, but their usefulness varies with a bank’s characteristics. Price-to-assets can supplement them in some comparisons; it does not replace analysis of profitability or capital. Definitions and adjustments can differ, so use consistent inputs and record the date of each share price and estimate.
| Measure | What it compares | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| P/E | Share price relative to earnings per share | Most useful when earnings are positive and representative. Check reported and normalized or “core” earnings; negative or distorted earnings can make P/E unavailable or misleading. |
| P/B | Market price relative to common book value | Provides a balance-sheet reference, but book value alone may not reflect differences in asset quality or franchise economics. |
| P/TBV | Market price relative to tangible book value | Tangible book value excludes goodwill and certain other intangible assets from equity. Check how each issuer defines or adjusts it. |
| Price-to-assets | Market value relative to assets | Can add context to a bank appraisal comparison, but does not show whether the bank earns adequate returns on those assets. |
SEC-hosted appraisal and offering materials use these measures and illustrate why definitions matter: one offering document, for example, describes core earnings as excluding after-tax non-recurring items. Do not assume two figures labeled “core” or “tangible” were calculated identically. SEC-hosted bank valuation document; SEC-hosted offering document.

Read book multiples with profitability and capital
A low P/B or P/TBV is not, by itself, evidence that a bank is undervalued. It may reflect weak expected returns, asset-quality concerns, excess capital or other risks. Higher equity levels can also restrain book multiples when excess capital makes it harder to generate a competitive return on equity (ROE).

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsROE measures realized profitability for a given capital structure, but it is not a clean way to compare underlying profitability across banks with different capital structures. Read it alongside capital ratios and the bank’s risk profile rather than treating a higher ROE as automatically better. An SEC comment-letter record explains this distinction. Handle analyst price targets as dated estimates
A price target is an analyst’s estimate, not a guaranteed outcome or an independently established intrinsic value. For each target, note the analyst or source, publication date, target horizon and material assumptions. Compare targets only when those details are sufficiently alike; flag stale estimates, mismatched horizons and target sets based on very few analysts. An average can conceal those differences.
Compare a target with a share price only when both are timestamped and the forecast horizons and assumptions are clear. Targets and market prices change, so an undated comparison can quickly become misleading. A 2026 SEC bank-merger filing illustrates valuation analysis that considers price relative to estimated EPS and P/TBV alongside estimated tangible-common-equity returns; that is context for evaluating assumptions, not a universal target method. See the SEC merger filing.
Quick Recap
A practical comparison checklist
- Set and explain a peer group with similar business mix, geography, size and risk.
- Give every growth figure a metric, start and end date, and dividend treatment where relevant.
- Use consistently defined P/E, P/B or P/TBV figures and timestamp the market data.
- Assess earnings quality, profitability and capital structure together; include credit and funding risks in context.
- For price targets, record the source, date, horizon and assumptions before comparing them.
