Compare automobile stocks by economics, not by a single sales or valuation number. First map each company’s vehicle categories, customers, geography and non-vehicle businesses. Then reconcile fiscal periods and accounting definitions before comparing revenue, margins, cash flow, investment, financing exposure and volume. A mass-market manufacturer, a luxury specialist, an EV-focused company, a captive lender and a dealership group can all appear in an “auto” screen while carrying very different risks and profit drivers.

The practical test is simple: can you explain what each company sells, who pays it, which activities generate cash, and which reported figures are genuinely comparable? If not, a ranking is premature.

1. Define the peer group before opening a spreadsheet

The quality of an automobile-stock comparison depends on the companies you put in it. State the geography, industry role and product focus first. A global vehicle manufacturer should not be treated as interchangeable with an auto retailer, parts supplier, battery maker or software company.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate manufacturers, retailers and suppliers

  • Vehicle manufacturers design, assemble and distribute cars, trucks, sport-utility vehicles, buses or commercial equipment. Their economics are shaped by factories, platforms, suppliers, incentives and warranty obligations.
  • Dealership groups earn from new and used vehicles, finance and insurance offices, parts and service. Their inventory turns, same-store sales and fixed operations matter more than factory capacity.
  • Suppliers sell components, systems or materials to several manufacturers. Customer concentration, program awards and tooling recovery can be more important than retail vehicle demand.

If you include different types, label the comparison explicitly and use metrics appropriate to each. AutoNation’s 2025 annual report, for example, says parts and service were 17% of its revenue but 48% of its gross profit for the year ended December 31, 2025. That illustrates how a dealership’s high-margin service activity can matter more to profit than its sales share; it is not an automaker benchmark.

Set the geographic and time boundaries

Record each company’s principal markets, reporting currency, fiscal-year end and the period covered by every figure. A calendar-year company and a company whose fiscal year ends in another month may describe different economic conditions in their “2025” results. Note currency translation, acquisitions, divestitures and any change in segment presentation.

Use a common observation date for market data. A share price, market capitalization or enterprise value without a date is not a comparable fact.

2. Map vehicle categories and customers

Before comparing growth or margins, describe the products that generate them. Product mix determines pricing power, material costs, regulatory exposure and the capital required to refresh a lineup.

Axis Questions to answer for every company Why it changes the comparison
Vehicle type What share of activity is passenger cars, pickups, SUVs, vans, buses or heavy commercial equipment? Trucks and premium SUVs often have different prices and margins from small cars; commercial cycles differ from retail demand.
Powertrain How much volume and investment are tied to internal-combustion engines, hybrids, plug-in hybrids and battery EVs? Battery materials, software, charging and regulatory credits create different cost and revenue patterns.
Price tier Is the portfolio mass-market, premium, luxury or a mixture? Average transaction price, incentives, brand investment and customer sensitivity to interest rates vary by tier.
Customer Are buyers retail households, commercial fleets, governments, rental companies or dealers? Fleet contracts can stabilize volume while reducing per-unit pricing; retail financing and incentives affect affordability.
Channel Does the company use franchised dealers, direct sales, distributors or a combination? Channel structure changes inventory ownership, selling expense, customer data and regulatory obligations.
Region Where are vehicles sold and produced, and which currencies and trade rules apply? Exchange rates, tariffs, local content rules and regional demand can move results independently of global unit volume.

Distinguish retail from commercial demand

Do not combine household and fleet performance if the filing separates them. Ford describes Ford Pro as serving commercial customers, while Ford Blue focuses primarily on internal-combustion and hybrid vehicles, parts, accessories and digital services for retail customers. Ford Model e primarily covers EVs and related software and digital activities. Those are Ford’s management segments, not universal industry definitions.

Track mix, not only units

Two companies can deliver the same number of vehicles while producing very different revenue and profit. Record average selling price where disclosed, model and body-style mix, incentives, wholesale versus retail deliveries, and the proportion of commercial or rental sales. A volume increase caused by low-priced fleet units should not be read as equivalent to stronger retail demand for high-margin products.

3. Draw the complete business-model map

New-vehicle assembly is only one possible source of economics. For each company, list activities outside the vehicle sale and classify how they appear in the accounts.

Use three disclosure categories

  1. Reportable segment: management and the filing present separate revenue, profit or assets for the activity.
  2. Line within a segment: the activity is disclosed, but its results are combined with other operations.
  3. Strategy or investment: management discusses a future opportunity or spending program without evidence of a mature, separately profitable business.

This classification prevents an announced subscription, charging network or autonomous-driving project from being treated as recurring earnings before the filing supports that conclusion.

Financing and leasing

Captive finance subsidiaries can provide loans and leases to dealers and customers, support vehicle sales and generate interest income. They also add receivables, funding costs, credit losses and debt that make a consolidated balance sheet unlike that of a manufacturer without a lender. Separate finance-company revenue, operating profit, receivables, delinquencies, charge-offs and liquidity where the filing provides them.

Energy, software and services

Energy generation and storage, charging, insurance, maintenance, used-vehicle sales, parts, subscriptions and software may have different margins and repeat characteristics from vehicle assembly. Identify whether each is reported separately, embedded in automotive results or only described qualitatively.

Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K states: “We operate as two reportable segments: (i) automotive and (ii) energy generation and storage.” Its automotive segment includes vehicle sales and leasing, regulatory credits, and services and other items such as used-vehicle sales, maintenance, charging, insurance, parts and merchandise. Consequently, Tesla’s automotive margin is not a pure measure of new-car manufacturing.

Examples of different maps

  • Ford: Ford Blue, Ford Model e, Ford Pro and Ford Credit divide retail ICE and hybrid activity, EV and related digital activity, commercial customers and financing. These boundaries are specific to Ford.
  • Tesla: automotive and energy generation and storage are the two reportable segments in its 2025 filing. Services and other items sit inside automotive under the company’s definition.
  • Toyota: its Form 20-F describes automotive and financial services businesses. Financial services primarily finance dealers and customers purchasing or leasing Toyota vehicles. Confirm the applicable fiscal period before matching Toyota’s annual numbers with calendar-year reporters.
  • General Motors: its 2024 annual report describes GM Financial and investments in EVs, autonomous vehicles, software-enabled services and subscriptions. Treat those as disclosed activities and investments, not automatically as mature, separately profitable segments.

4. Reconcile segment labels before comparing numbers

“Automotive,” “mobility,” “services” and “financial services” do not have standardized contents. Reportable segments reflect how management organizes and reviews the business, so similarly named segments can contain different products, costs and intercompany eliminations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a definition note beside every number. State what is included, whether intersegment revenue is eliminated, which profit measure is used and whether the figure is GAAP, IFRS or an adjusted management metric. Tesla’s automotive revenue includes services and other items; another manufacturer may place comparable activities elsewhere. A direct margin ranking without this check can be misleading.

5. Build an apples-to-apples operating table

Use at least three years when available. A single year can be distorted by a model launch, recall provision, restructuring, production interruption, regulatory-credit sales or a temporary incentive environment.

Metric How to record it Questions and cautions
Revenue Consolidated and segment revenue in the reported currency Are finance, leasing, energy or services included? Is growth organic, currency-driven or acquisition-related?
Gross profit and margin Reported gross profit divided by the same revenue base Do cost classifications differ? Are credits, warranty provisions or finance costs included?
Operating income and margin Use the company’s stated GAAP/IFRS measure, then show adjusted figures separately Identify restructuring, impairments, recalls, litigation and launch costs.
Operating cash flow Cash generated from operations for the same fiscal period Working-capital swings and finance receivables can make cash flow diverge from earnings.
Capital expenditure Factory, tooling, battery, software and other capital spending Separate maintenance from expansion where disclosed; note capitalized development.
Debt and liquidity Corporate debt, finance-company debt, cash and committed liquidity Captive lenders can make consolidated debt look high while funding vehicle sales.
Production and deliveries Use the company’s definitions and state whether production, wholesale or customer deliveries are shown Do not mix global production with regional registrations or deliveries.
Mix indicators Powertrain, body style, region, channel and average price where disclosed Volume without mix cannot explain revenue or margin changes.

Normalize the periods

  1. Write each fiscal year-end date beside the result.
  2. Convert currencies only when necessary, using one stated method; preserve reported figures for auditability.
  3. Align the number of months. Do not compare a 12-month period with a stub period created by a transition.
  4. Flag acquisitions, discontinued operations and segment reorganizations.
  5. Read the notes for warranty, recall, restructuring, impairment, incentive and regulatory-credit effects.

Calculate ratios transparently

If you calculate margin, show the numerator, denominator, currency, period and accounting basis. For example, “2025 segment gross margin” should mean the company-reported 2025 segment gross profit divided by that segment’s 2025 revenue, not consolidated profit divided by a selectively chosen sales line. Keep analyst-created ratios visually separate from management-reported measures.

6. Use Tesla’s 2025 figures as a definition lesson

Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K reports automotive revenue of $82.056 billion and energy generation and storage revenue of $12.771 billion. Reported gross profit was $13.292 billion for automotive and $3.802 billion for energy generation and storage. These are company-reported segment amounts in U.S. dollars.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those figures are useful only after reading the segment definitions: automotive includes vehicle sales and leasing, regulatory credits and several services; energy generation and storage is separate. Comparing Tesla’s automotive gross profit directly with another company’s “automotive” line may combine unlike activities. Use the figures to understand Tesla’s mix, then rebuild the peer table from equivalent definitions rather than forcing a headline ranking.

7. Interpret profitability, cash and investment together

Revenue leadership is not profit leadership. A company can sell more units yet earn less because of product mix, incentives, warranty costs, financing losses or an unprofitable launch. Conversely, a smaller company can report lower revenue but stronger cash generation from premium pricing or service activity.

Read the income statement with the cash-flow statement

  • Compare gross and operating margins, but identify what each includes.
  • Check operating cash flow against operating income over several years.
  • Explain large working-capital movements, especially inventory and finance receivables.
  • Measure capital expenditure against operating cash flow to see how much cash remains after investment.
  • Read debt maturities, cash balances and committed credit lines before calling a company financially flexible.

Separate recurring economics from one-time items

Regulatory-credit sales, launch costs, restructuring, plant closures, recall settlements, impairments, labor agreements and unusual tax items can materially change a year. Keep them in the reported result, then identify them in the interpretation. Do not silently remove an item and present the resulting number as if it were a company-reported metric.

8. Compare EV-focused and traditional automakers on equivalent questions

The useful comparison is not “EV versus legacy” as a slogan. Ask the same economic questions of both models:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Question EV-focused exposure Traditional or mixed-powertrain exposure
Product cost Battery cells, minerals, packs, electronics and software architecture Engines, transmissions, emissions systems, batteries for hybrids and multiple platforms
Revenue breadth May include charging, energy storage, software, insurance and credits May include financing, parts, service, commercial fleets and multiple powertrains
Factory risk New capacity and utilization of dedicated EV plants Complexity of maintaining ICE, hybrid and EV capacity during the transition
Demand sensitivity Charging access, incentives, battery prices and technology adoption Fuel prices, emissions rules, fleet cycles and consumer preference across powertrains
After-sales economics Potentially different maintenance needs and charging services Established parts, service and dealer networks, with warranty obligations

Do not assume that an EV label makes software or energy revenue material, or that a legacy label excludes EV growth. Use disclosed revenue and investment, not strategic language alone.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

9. Tie risks to the company’s actual mix

Risk sections are most useful when connected to the business map. For each company, score exposure and evidence rather than assigning a generic “auto risk” label.

  • Affordability and rates: higher loan rates can reduce household demand; captive finance adds funding and credit-loss exposure.
  • Credit performance: monitor delinquencies, charge-offs, residual values and lease returns where financing is material.
  • Commodity and battery costs: steel, aluminum, semiconductors, lithium, nickel and other inputs can pressure margins and working capital.
  • Capacity utilization: underused plants spread fixed costs over fewer vehicles.
  • Labor and suppliers: strikes, wage agreements, shortages and single-source components can interrupt production.
  • Warranty and recalls: provisions and campaign costs can reverse an apparently strong margin year.
  • Regulation and trade policy: emissions rules, incentives, tariffs and local-content requirements can alter product economics quickly.
  • Foreign exchange: production and sales currencies may not match, creating translation and transaction exposure.
  • Model execution: delayed launches, software defects, battery issues or weak residual values can damage demand and brand economics.

State the time horizon. A company may have heavy near-term investment but a credible long-term plan, or strong current margins that depend on a temporary shortage. The filings support exposure analysis; they do not automatically prove which company is safer.

10. Keep valuation separate from business comparison

Understanding a business does not produce a current stock valuation. For a defensible valuation comparison, collect share prices, diluted share counts, debt, cash, leases and finance-company balances on the same date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Define the denominator

  • Market capitalization: share price multiplied by the share count you specify, including treatment of multiple classes.
  • Enterprise value: state whether you subtract cash, include leases and how you treat captive-finance debt and restricted cash.
  • Earnings: identify GAAP or IFRS profit, adjusted profit, continuing operations and the period or forecast used.
  • Cash flow: distinguish operating cash flow from free cash flow and disclose your capital-expenditure definition.

Use more than one multiple when earnings are cyclical or segment accounting differs. A price-to-earnings ratio can be distorted by a temporary credit gain, restructuring charge or finance-company accounting. A price-to-sales ratio ignores mix and capital intensity. Enterprise-value measures require special care when a finance subsidiary funds customer loans.

The filings considered here do not establish a harmonized, same-date ranking of current automobile-stock multiples, forward estimates or share prices. Do not infer one from operating figures alone.

11. Worked comparison notes for four manufacturers and one retailer

Ford

Start with Ford’s company-defined segments: Ford Blue, Ford Model e, Ford Pro and Ford Credit. Ask how much of revenue and profit comes from retail ICE and hybrid vehicles, EVs and associated digital activity, commercial customers and financing. Compare Ford Pro with another company’s commercial operation only after checking whether fleet financing, service and software are included on both sides.

Tesla

Use the two reportable segments in the 2025 Form 10-K, then read the automotive inclusion list. Automotive revenue is not synonymous with new-vehicle revenue because it includes leasing, regulatory credits and services and other items. Energy generation and storage must be analyzed separately for revenue, gross profit, investment and growth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Toyota

Map automotive and financial services separately and confirm the fiscal year. Financing primarily supports dealers and customers buying or leasing Toyota vehicles, so compare its receivables, funding and credit performance with another captive lender rather than treating all debt as ordinary industrial borrowing.

General Motors

Use the 2024 annual report’s disclosures for GM Financial and investments in EVs, autonomous vehicles, software-enabled services and subscriptions. Mark the source year clearly because it is older than the 2025 Ford and Tesla filings, and distinguish current reported earnings from investment programs or strategic descriptions.

AutoNation as a boundary case

AutoNation is a dealership group, not a vehicle manufacturer. Its 2025 report cites 16.3 million U.S. industry new-vehicle unit sales, compared with 16.0 million in 2024 and 15.6 million in 2023. Those are U.S. industry figures cited in a retailer’s filing and include markets where AutoNation does not compete; they are not global automaker market totals. Use the retailer only to illustrate channel economics, including the 17% revenue and 48% gross-profit parts-and-service split.

12. A repeatable 10-step comparison workflow

  1. Write the peer definition: country, manufacturer or non-manufacturer, product tier and date.
  2. Collect the latest annual and quarterly filings: record fiscal year-end and currency.
  3. Build the product map: cars, trucks, SUVs, commercial vehicles, hybrids and EVs.
  4. Build the customer map: retail, commercial, government, rental and dealer channels.
  5. List adjacent businesses: finance, leasing, energy, software, charging, insurance, parts and service.
  6. Classify disclosures: reportable segment, embedded line or strategic investment.
  7. Enter three or more years of metrics: revenue, profit, margins, cash flow, capital spending, debt and volume.
  8. Reconcile definitions: remove false equivalence caused by segment scope, fiscal periods or adjusted measures.
  9. Link each risk to evidence: rates, credit, commodities, capacity, labor, warranty, regulation, currency and execution.
  10. Only then analyze valuation: obtain same-date prices and define market-capitalization and enterprise-value treatment.

13. Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Ranking by unit sales alone: add price, body-style, channel and powertrain mix.
  • Assuming “automotive” means the same thing everywhere: read the segment footnote and list included activities.
  • Mixing fiscal years: show year-end dates and avoid calling an unsynchronized table “2025 peers.”
  • Ignoring finance subsidiaries: separate industrial and lending economics, receivables, funding and credit losses.
  • Treating strategy as revenue: require reported sales or profit before assigning a business a mature contribution.
  • Using adjusted profit without reconciliation: show the reported result and identify every material adjustment.
  • Calling a retailer an automaker: label AutoNation and similar companies as dealerships and use service, inventory and same-store measures.
  • Adding stale market data: put an explicit date on every price, share count and multiple.

14. Optional data tools

Financial-research platforms can speed up screening, historical statements and valuation work. Morningstar describes security valuation, performance metrics and screening tools; Schwab describes research reports, screeners and company data. Use these services to find candidates and organize data, then verify definitions, dates and adjustments in the companies’ filings. A screen, rating or platform estimate is not a substitute for reading segment notes and risk disclosures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

The best automobile-stock comparison is a map followed by a reconciliation, not a leaderboard. Identify what each company sells, who buys it, how financing and adjacent businesses contribute, and which risks follow from that mix. Compare multi-year results only after aligning periods, segment definitions and accounting measures. Keep valuation as a separate, same-date exercise, especially when captive finance subsidiaries or multiple share classes are involved.
