Start by identifying your market and the appliance category. EU labels and U.S. labels use different scales, test assumptions and cost fields, so an EU class letter cannot be compared directly with a U.S. EnergyGuide figure. Then compare equivalent capacities, copy the actual consumption value, scale it to your expected use and apply your electricity and water rates.
What an energy label can—and cannot—tell you
An energy label is a standardized comparison tool, not a promise of your household bill. The number is measured or calculated under a defined test programme, load, cycle frequency and energy-price assumption. Your result changes with the programmes you select, how often you run the appliance, loading, utility tariffs, water charges and maintenance.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- the same market and label system;
- the same appliance category;
- similar capacity or service size;
- the same consumption unit and test programme;
- your own annual usage and utility rates; and
- a clearly stated ownership period for total-cost calculations.
A class letter alone is not enough. Two dishwashers can share a class while using different amounts of energy, and a larger appliance can consume more overall while being the better fit because it handles your household’s normal load in fewer runs.

First, identify the label system for your market
| Market | What to look for | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| European Union | A-to-G colour scale, model-specific consumption fields and a QR code linking to the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL). | For several categories, including refrigerators, dishwashers and washing machines, older A+, A++ and A+++ marks were replaced by the rescaled A-to-G system from 2021. |
| United States | Yellow EnergyGuide label for estimated energy use and annual operating cost; ENERGY STAR is a separate efficiency qualification. | EnergyGuide figures use standardized assumptions. They are for comparing similar models, not a guaranteed residential bill. |
EU labels: the A-to-G scale
The European Commission’s current guidance uses a green-to-red A-to-G scale. For washing machines and washer-dryers, the A-to-G label has applied since 1 March 2021. The former plus-mark scale is therefore not a current like-for-like reference for those rescaled categories.
Use the letter to orient yourself, then read every numerical field relevant to your priorities. A model in class B may cost less to run than a class A model if their capacities, programmes or prices differ enough; the label’s actual kilowatt-hour figure is what lets you quantify that difference.
U.S. labels: EnergyGuide and ENERGY STAR
In the United States, the yellow EnergyGuide label is the primary comparison document for many household appliances. ENERGY STAR’s dishwasher guidance describes its purpose as using the label to determine a model’s energy use, compare similar models and estimate annual operating costs. ENERGY STAR qualification is separate from the EnergyGuide estimate, so do not treat the logo as a replacement for reading the label.
For dishwashers, the estimated yearly electricity use and yearly energy cost on EnergyGuide are built from assumed annual consumption, average cycles per week and an average energy price. The annual energy consumption (AEC) itself does not appear on the EnergyGuide label. Treat the displayed yearly cost as a standardized comparison figure.

Washing machines and washer-dryers in the EU
EU labels for these categories report energy use per 100 cycles, based on the eco 40–60 programme. They also provide water use per cycle, programme duration, noise and capacity-related information. Record the unit exactly as printed: a per-100-cycle number must not be mistaken for annual consumption.
The eco programme is a test basis, not a claim that every load will use the same amount. A quick wash, hot cycle, partial load or intensive setting can produce a different result. Use the standardized number for comparing models, then adjust the number of cycles to your household.
Dishwashers in the EU
The EU dishwasher label reports energy per 100 eco-programme cycles, rated place settings, eco-programme duration, water per cycle and airborne noise. The framework named by the European Commission is Regulation (EU) 2019/2017.

Capacity is especially important here. A nominally efficient compact dishwasher may require two runs for the dishes a larger household produces in one run. Compare the energy per cycle alongside place settings and your likely loading pattern rather than choosing the lowest number in isolation.
Dishwashers in the United States
Use the EnergyGuide estimate to compare similar-capacity models. ENERGY STAR advises choosing the right size and considering auto-sensing cycles and cycle options. Those features can change real-world use, but the standardized label still gives you a consistent starting point.
Refrigerators and freezers
Refrigerators run continuously, so the relevant comparison is normally the label’s estimated yearly energy use or cost rather than a cycle figure. Confirm the exact model and manufacturing year in the U.S. Department of Energy refrigerator/freezer rating lookup, which allows searches by appliance type, brand, model and year.
DOE’s published illustration gives a 2000 Amana freezer an estimated 537 kWh of annual use when the door-seal condition is rated “good.” That is an example tied to a specific model year and seal condition, not a general benchmark for freezers or a prediction for your appliance.

The per-100-cycle formula
For an EU washing machine or dishwasher, calculate electricity cost as:
Annual electricity cost = (label kWh per 100 cycles × expected cycles per year ÷ 100) × your electricity rate per kWh
- Copy the label’s kWh-per-100-cycles value.
- Estimate realistic annual cycles. Use your household’s actual pattern if you have it; otherwise count typical weekly runs and multiply by 52.
- Divide the product of those two figures by 100 to obtain annual kilowatt-hours.
- Multiply annual kilowatt-hours by the price on your electricity bill, including the unit used for the appliance calculation.
Worked example
Suppose dishwasher A is rated at 55 kWh per 100 eco cycles and you expect 180 cycles each year. Its estimated annual electricity use is 55 × 180 ÷ 100 = 99 kWh. At a household tariff of $0.25 per kWh, the electricity portion is $24.75 per year.

If dishwasher B is rated at 70 kWh per 100 cycles under the same type of standardized test, the same usage would be 126 kWh, or $31.50 at that tariff. The difference is $6.75 per year. Whether that saving justifies a higher purchase price depends on the price gap, your ownership period and whether the models serve your household equally well.
When the label already gives annual use or cost
For a U.S. EnergyGuide appliance, enter the displayed annual estimate into your comparison sheet, but retain the assumptions printed on the label. Do not replace the label’s electricity-price assumption with your tariff without noting that you have recalculated it. For a refrigerator, multiply the model’s annual kWh by your own rate when you want a household-specific electricity estimate.
DOE federal-purchasing examples use $0.099 per kWh for a refrigerator calculation and $0.09 per kWh for a dishwasher calculation. Those are federal-facility assumptions, not current residential tariffs. They demonstrate the arithmetic; they should not be presented as a typical household price.
Add water and sewer charges separately
Where a label states water per cycle, estimate annual water use as:
Annual water use = labelled litres (or gallons) per cycle × cycles per year

Total ownership cost = purchase price + (annual electricity cost × years) + (annual variable water/sewer cost × years)
This is still an estimate. It excludes repairs, detergents, installation, financing, taxes and changes in utility prices unless you deliberately add them. Do not assume that the lowest running-cost model has the lowest total cost.

| Comparison item | What to record | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase price | Price for the exact model, market and configuration. | A modest annual saving may not recover a large upfront premium during your ownership period. |
| Electricity | Label kWh figure, your cycles or annual use, and your tariff. | Rates and usage vary by household; standardized dollars are not your bill. |
| Water and sewer | Label water per cycle, annual cycles and variable local rate. | Water can materially affect dishwasher and washer costs where usage is metered. |
| Capacity | Rated load, place settings or usable service size. | An undersized appliance can require extra runs and erase an apparent efficiency advantage. |
| Time | Eco-programme duration or other relevant cycle times. | A very long efficient cycle may not fit your schedule; a faster programme may consume more. |
| Noise | Labelled airborne-noise value where provided. | Noise matters in open-plan homes, bedrooms near utility rooms and overnight operation. |
| Features used | Auto-sensing, cycle options and controls you will actually select. | Features have value only if they solve a real need and do not lead to more intensive cycles. |
A repeatable pre-purchase comparison method
- Define the market. Write EU or U.S. at the top of your notes. Do not mix A-to-G classes with EnergyGuide annual estimates.
- Define the appliance and service size. Record category, capacity, place settings or rated load. Reject comparisons where one model is materially larger unless that difference is intentional.
- Capture the test basis. Note eco 40–60 for EU washing machines and washer-dryers, eco cycles for EU dishwashers, or the assumptions printed on a U.S. EnergyGuide label.
- Copy the consumption field. Record kWh per 100 cycles, kWh per cycle or estimated annual kWh exactly as shown. Include water, duration and noise fields when available.
- Estimate annual use. Count your expected cycles or loads. Separate normal use from occasional intensive or hot programmes.
- Apply your tariffs. Multiply annual kWh by your electricity rate. Add water and sewer cost separately where the label and your billing structure make that meaningful.
- Calculate ownership cost. Add the purchase price and utility estimates for a stated number of years. Keep assumptions visible so you can change them if your tariff or usage changes.
- Check practical constraints. Confirm physical fit, door clearance, ventilation, plumbing, electrical requirements, capacity, programme duration and acceptable noise.
- Verify the exact model. Scan an EU label QR code to open its EPREL record, or use the DOE refrigerator/freezer lookup in the United States. Confirm model number, market and manufacturing year before paying.
Use EPREL and official U.S. records to verify the model
EPREL for EU products
The QR code on an EU label opens the model’s record in EPREL, the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling. EPREL is free to the public and supports searching, sorting and comparing models sold in the EU. Depending on the product group, records can include manufacturer links to spare parts, indicative costs and repair instructions.
Check that the model number in the listing matches the appliance in the shop. A near-identical suffix can represent a different capacity, market configuration or label record. Save the record or note the date if you are comparing prices over time.
DOE refrigerator/freezer lookup
The U.S. Department of Energy tool lets you search estimated energy-consumption ranges by appliance type, brand, model and manufacturing year. Use it to verify an older or unusual model when the in-store information is incomplete. Treat any range or example as model-specific, and confirm the door-seal or condition assumptions where the tool provides them.

Comparing letters across countries
An EU class A is not equivalent to a U.S. EnergyGuide value or an ENERGY STAR qualification. Fix this by comparing models within one market and using the numerical consumption field.

Comparing different capacities
A smaller appliance may show lower energy per cycle simply because it handles less. Fix this by comparing energy per service delivered: place settings, kilograms of laundry or the household load you actually need.

Treating per-100-cycle data as annual data
EU figures per 100 cycles require a usage adjustment. Fix this by multiplying by your expected cycles and dividing by 100 before applying your tariff.
Using a national or federal price as your tariff
Published dollar examples can use federal-facility or other declared assumptions. Fix this by reading your own electricity bill and documenting the rate used in your calculation.
Assuming eco-programme results apply to every setting
Label tests use a specified programme. Hot, rapid, intensive, half-load or extra-dry settings can change energy, water and time. Fix this by treating the label as a common baseline and considering which programmes you normally select.
Ignoring water, time and noise
A model with a low electricity number may be impractical if it is too small, too slow or too loud. Fix this by recording water per cycle, duration, noise and capacity next to energy use.
Relying on a plug-in monitor before purchase
A plug-in monitor can measure an appliance you already own, but it cannot validate the standardized consumption of a model you have not bought. Use the official label and model database for pre-purchase comparisons.
When is a better rating worth paying more?
Calculate the annual saving between two equivalent models, then divide the price premium by that saving to estimate a simple payback period. For example, a $120 premium and a $6.75 annual electricity saving imply roughly 17.8 years before electricity savings alone recover the premium. That does not make the efficient model a bad choice: water savings, quieter operation, longer service life, reliability, features or future tariff increases may matter. It does show why a class letter should not make the decision by itself.
Paying more is easier to justify when:
- the appliance runs frequently or continuously;
- your electricity or water rates are high;
- the model has the capacity to replace multiple smaller loads;
- water savings are valuable under your metered tariff;
- the efficiency improvement does not compromise the programmes and capacity you need; or
- the premium is recovered within your realistic ownership period.
A lower-rated model can be the better purchase when its price is substantially lower, its capacity fits your household more accurately, or its practical features prevent extra cycles.
